A Message from Faith M. Gagnon ~District Administrator~ The month of May brings forth a sense of renewal as the brown tones of earth turn to lush shades of green and colors of many hues. For some, the dose of winter we had was far too long, for others it was not long enough and faded too quickly without offering us enough snow, and for some others, it was just about right. It s all in one s perspective and what is right for them. As you know, no matter where we go we really don t have a choice on the weather we receive. However, we do have a choice on how we embrace it and respond to it. Much is the same for all other life events we face and the changes we encounter. For some things, one might be able to position themselves to be better prepared for what lies ahead, and for other things, it all depends upon the choices we make in response to what it is we encounter. Oh, the beauty of choice! This brings me to another topic which is also related to choice. As many of you may have heard and for those of you who have not, several of our district s families with children ready to enter 4 year old kindergarten in the fall will be offered a wonderful choice of 4K programming when school resumes in September. Stockbridge-Munsee Head Start and the Bowler School District have been busy collaborating on options that can be offered to families with young children who are eligible for 4K programming in the upcoming school year. Currently, the Bowler School District is planning to continue offering 4K services as they have done so in the past. This has consisted of 4 half days (M-TH) with sessions held in the AM and in the PM. The Stockbridge-Munsee Head Start program is planning to offer eligible families all day Head Start 4K programming for 4 full days a week (M-TH) and a half day on Fridays. Both programs are wonderful options and opportunities for our youth to grow and flourish. These options provide our families with options and choices. If you have any questions or need more information, please by all means feel free to reach out to us. From the Desk of Kim Ninabuck MS/HS Principal It definitely looks like spring has arrived. Some of our students are becoming restless and don t always want to cooperate. We have been having some issues with students skipping classes, not following board policy in regards to music (ear phones and mini speakers), cell phone use, and dress code and not following directives by staff. I appreciate all the parents who are helping with keeping their son/daughter s electronics and headphones at home. Please understand, we have a school to run and one student s rights do not out weigh the rest of the students who are working on getting an education. We need to work together to make sure we are preparing our students for their future beyond Bowler School. We want our students to be career and college ready. Right now, school is a student s job. In turn they need to get to class on time, work hard for their grades and promotion (paychecks) and concentrate on what needs to be done. We wrapped up the State Forward Exam and the 4 th quarter District STAR testing. We will be starting the ACT Aspire with grades 9 and 10, starting the week of April 25th. We hope to have these state tests completed by May 10 th. Please help our students be successful with the state testing by making sure they are present on testing days, talk to your son/daughter about working hard on the test; making sure he/she has a good night s rest the night before; and has a good breakfast in the morning. As the weather warms up, please remind your son/daughter about appropriate dress for school. Please check the student handbook for policy on proper attire. Mid-quarter quarter 3 is May 5. Grades should be coming out the following week. The last day for seniors is Wednesday, May 25th with graduation Friday, May 27 th. There is no school Monday, May 30 th. Summer school packets are out, if your child has failed any core classes make sure they bring one home and get signed up for classes. Let s have a wonderful 4 th quarter.

WHAT S HAPPENING WITH MRS. S Bucky went on another road trip and went to visit Mrs. Mueller s 3 rd grade class, but he decided that he wanted to go back to Mr. DuQuaine s 5 th grade class. Enjoy the outdoors while you can. NHS Needs Your Help The Bowler High School Chapter National Honor Society is working toward saving 1 MILLION pop tops. When we achieve this great goal, we will be taking them to The Ronald McDonald House in Milwaukee. The tabs will be turned into cash at a recycling center which will provide a home away from home for families whose lives have been disrupted as a result of their child s illness or injury. Currently we have over 171,235 tops and are looking to reach a goal of 300,000 by the end of the school year. Thank you to all who have contributed tops. So please save those pop-tops for a great cause!
Hello Everyone, I am interested in forming a Bowler High School Athletic Hall of Fame. The goal is to positively remember those that achieved great things at Bowler High School within our athletic programs. With these efforts just beginning, please consider that it will take time. The articles below are emails, the first from an umpire to Jeff DePerry, Athletic Director about the girls softball team when they played at Menominee and a the second is an email that Mr. DePerry sent to our softball coaches. We just wanted to share some of the good things happening at Bowler School. We have a great staff and great students. Chuck and Jeff, I want to let both of you know a couple of things: I know you guys are aware, but unfortunately not everyone in your communities are. School boards, tax payers and parents really need to know how impressive the way your coaches work with and treat their players. I know it s not important that an umpire enjoys himself, but I do when I get to work for 2 schools like yours. The young ladies treat each other exactly how the coaches treat each other and the umpires. We had a few home runs hit last night, a couple by Menominee and 1 by Bowler. I saw girls of the opposing team slapping the hand of the hitter as she rounded the bases. It s very impressive and this behavior should be directly contributed to your coaches. Coach Pluger and Coach Smith should be commended for teaching these girls a lot more than softball. 5 years from now they may not remember if they won or lost, but they will remember the right way to deal with situations, good or bad. Please feel free to use this message in any way you see fit, but please let your coaches know that their efforts do not go unnoticed. It takes a special person to become a coach, and its nice to see that people recognize your efforts to continually instill a culture of great sportsmanship and high character the things that are often forgotten and not kept track of on a scoreboard. In my eyes you guys exemplify why interscholastic sports can be such a meaningful part of the high school experience. Thank you! Jeff
Human Behavior ERVING Class Recently, in the Human Behavior ERVING class, a unit was held on Behavior Modification, which led to looking at behaviors one might want to modify, such as habits and addictions. As part of this unit Brock Schreiber, Tobacco Cessation Specialist at the Stockbridge-Munsee Health and Wellness Center, spoke to the class. He shared with the class his knowledge of what is actually taking place inside a person s brain and body when addicted to nicotine. He mentioned some of the techniques he has learned to use, such as motivational interviewing, when trying to help someone change their behavior. He even told the students to go out and try it on their family, friends, and even their teachers. He ended his presentation by challenging the students to not let life convince them they re something they re not. The below picture on the left is Brock talking with the students from the teacher s desk in the ERVING room. On the right is a picture of the Bowler students in the Human Behavior class. There also are students from Marion, Menominee Indian, Seneca, and North Crawford in the class and are able to be interactive via the cameras and monitors. The class is instructed by Mrs. Donna Lehman.
The Super Mileage Vehicle and Electrathon traveled to UW-Stout on April 15 and 16 for their first 2-day event of the season. Bowler took three Supermileage cars, one Electrathon car, eight students, one chaperone, and one teacher. Unfortunately, the students that were most involved with the electric car could not attend for personal reasons, but other students were able to step up and help them out at the competition. The first day of inspections went very well for all vehicles with all cars passing all safety stations with only one incident. The number 62 car, headed by Jordan Boswell and Chelsea Peters got through the first station when one of the Stout inspectors decided to test the cars electric start without a driver in the car. The car started without a hitch and headed down the street without a driver, crashed into the next station and headed toward the school before a last second lunge by the inspector to hit the kill switch stopped it. Luckily the damage to the car was minimal, mostly cosmetic and repairable on site. None of the vehicles were trying to win any awards the first day; we were just getting a feel for future events. UW-Stout got a new venue for the second day of the event from years past to test for the main reasons students build these vehicles, efficiency. On the most beautiful day of the year so far, all of the Bowler vehicles performed well. The Electrathon car, #60 made it to the first run of the hour long event. Jared Rickert volunteered to drive the car, and cautiously made it around the course 11 times before the batteries gave out. That was the end of the day for the 60 car for the simple reason that we didn t have enough people to get the car back onto the track. The distance the car traveled was good enough to get first in its class. This vehicle also received the Judge s Choice award. This award is given to the team that does the best job of presenting the car and talking to a panel of professors and college students about the process and testing of their vehicles. In the Super Mileage competition, #62 may have gotten away from the sprite of the competition and just wanted to go fast. However the car was efficient enough to average 115 MPG and good enough to get 2 nd place in the modified class. #67 is a diesel car driven by Cody Thiex and Cole Beirman; this is a kind of experimental thing going with the team this year. The car averaged approximately 70 MPG and at the event it was good enough to finish third in its class. Finally the #63 car headed by Jared Rickert and Jarred Boswell got into the act and got an average of 220 MPG which was good enough for 2 nd place. It was a good weekend for the teams, and changes will be needed to improve the cars. Next up for the vehicles is the competition at Fox Valley Technical College in Appleton on April 22 and 23. The teams will have a busy week in front of them to make some improvements to increase the distance traveled by the Electrathon car and gas mileage for the Supermileage teams.

Ukulele-mania Hits Bowler Elementary School Walk past Ms. Siahaan s classroom on a Tuesday after school and you ll likely be amazed by the sounds emanating from her room. A group of students are sitting around a table clutching what looks like miniature guitars. But no, it s Ms. Siahaan, Bowler Elementary s 5 th -and 6 th -grade reading teacher leading a small group of students on ukuleles. She rotates groups of students every six weeks, giving more students the unique opportunity of playing a ukulele. Siahaan was given a generous donation this past school year by the Shawano County Area Retired Teachers Association to help secure the ukuleles and offer the class to students at no charge. Many students are taking advantage of this once-in-a-lifetime offer. Groups of students have been practicing for nearly three months, rehearsing weekly on Tuesdays for an hour. Needless to say, it been quite a ride for these eager 5 th - and 6 th -grade musicians. In fact, the group was featured at the elementary school s Variety Show and are also scheduled to play at the school s Spring Concert in May. We are really excited about that, said Siahaan. Siahaan said she lets the students pick out songs that interest them. They are a great group of students who enjoy learning new songs, said Siahaan. And I m learning right along with them. I didn t know this would be so much fun. Siahaan utilizes her classroom s Smartboard and the internet to help aid in her musical instruction. We learn the chords and watch YouTube ukulele tutorial videos to help us learn the songs, she said. The students are really picking it up quite quickly. That s amazing to see. While Siahaan is amazed by the progress she s seen by her students, she s even more amazed by the interest her class has generated in only several months of practicing. The students love to practice at home and show me what they have learned the next time we get together, she said. That s why we re making so much progress. Siahaan s excitement radiates with her current class of ukulele ites. This is something I ve always wanted to, said Siahaan. And what better way to share it with our Bowler students. I couldn t be happier how it s going.
SPRING VARIETY SHOW The second annual variety show was held on April 1 st in the elementary gym. There were 28 acts that performed in front of an overflow crowd that included the entire elementary student body as well as an additional 80 family members, friends and community members that thoroughly enjoyed the 1 ½ hour performance. The event was coordinated teachers Joe Ferrero, Amanda Hein and Masters of Ceremony Nels Steffen. Thank you those 3 staff members for all their efforts. The following are pictures from the event.

MINUTES, BOWLER BOARD OF EDUCATION, Monday, March 21, 2016 Board Approved 4/18/2016 Call to order: The meeting was called to order by Board President, Deb Roth at 6:00 p.m. It was certified that the meeting was given proper notice. Roll call was taken with the following board members present: Fuerst, Herzberg, Schultz, and Smith. Grosskopf excused absence and Miller unexcused absence. Also present were Faith Gagnon, District Administrator; Wade Turner, Elementary Principal; Kim Ninabuck, 7-12 Principal; Bonnie Matz, District Secretary; Jeff DePerry, Athletic Director and Ronnda Teuchert. Approval of agenda: Motion by Schultz, seconded by Herzberg for approval of meeting agenda. Motion carried. Approval of minutes of prior meetings: Motion by Fuerst, seconded by Schultz to approve the minutes of February 15, 2016 and March 3, 2016. Motion carried. Approval of payment of vouchers: Motion by Herzberg, seconded by Schultz to approve vouchers 66317 through 66423, nine (9) manual checks and two (2) voided checks. Motion carried. Public Recognition: None Old Business: None Committee Reports:The Building and Grounds Committee met on March 17, 2016. They discussed the following: summer work projects, scoreboards for the athletic fields, concession stand roofs, painting of goal posts, art room cabinets, new carpet in selected rooms and the painting of the exterior doors. The Wellness/Human Growth and Development Committee met on March 17, 2016. They addressed goals for the 2016-2017 school year. At the time of the meeting, Mike Igl reported on the health fair he organized. Also discussed at the meeting were brain breaks for students, healthy snacks with staff modeling these snacks, looking at a model that Waupaca uses, plans for some fall activities and posting some of our goals. The next meeting will be September 26, 2016 at 3:30. New Business: Jeff DePerry addressed Ray Murphy s leave of absence from baseball for the 2015-2016 season and his proposal to move Eli Bierman to the head coach position and fill the assistant coach position with his recommended candidate. Mr. DePerry answered questions from board members. Motion by Fuerst, seconded by Roth to approve Aaron Matz as assistant baseball coach and to move Eli Bierman to the head coaching position. Motion carried. Motion by Herzberg, seconded by Fuerst to approve the resignations of Jeff DePerry and Jeff Zobeck as Middle School boys and girls track coaches. Motion carried. The board would like to thank Mr. DePerry and Mr. Zobeck for their dedication to coaching our students. Motion by Fuerst, seconded by Schultz to approve Tom Bagnall and Amy Doefer as Middle School girls and boys track coaches. Motion carried. Motion by Fuerst, seconded by Roth to approve one (1) of the three (3) purchase options for the replacement of the scoreboards for the athletic fields. The three choices were Nevco, Badger Sporting and DAKtronics. At the time of the meeting, DAKtronics was unable to submit the information we requested. Jeff DePerry, Athletic Director, explained the other two options and their comparisons and differences. Discussion was held. The motion was amended. Motion by Fuerst, seconded by Herzberg to approve purchasing scoreboards for the athletic fields from Nevco. Motion carried. Motion by Fuerst, seconded by Schultz to approve June 13, 2016 (start date) through July 14, 2016 (last day) as the dates for summer school with July 4 th as a no school day. Motion carried. Motion by Fuerst, seconded by Smith to approve summer school teacher pay at $22.00 per hour and paraprofessional pay at their normal rate of pay. Comparisons from other district were looked at. Motion carried. Mrs. Gagnon requested the Board to look at some dates for a special board meeting to be held in April.
