The Flying Wheel Newsletter of the Williamsburg Area Bicyclists (WAB) PO Box 2222, Williamsburg, VA 23187-2222 http://wabonline.org Volume 22, Number 7 Williamsburg, Virginia July 2018 Cycling Without Age Williamsburg Launches By Mark Holt On June 12th WAB member Lisa Pitman gave the first Cycling Without Age Williamsburg ride to two residents of Verena At the Reserve, Paula and Claudio Frank, who braved the rainy weather to try our great new community service. Two more residents, Jeanette Olechnowich and Grace Prusik followed and the program was successfully launched! These rides were provided thanks to the loan of the Richmond CWA affiliates trishaw as ours arrived a day late. Billsburg hosted the launch and we raised close to $450 between donations from Billsburg, The Hungry Pug food truck and proceeds from our 50-50 raffle plus some nice individual donations. Scott Wise provided live music and a good crowd of WAB members and folks from the community who heard about the event enjoyed the food, drink In this issue Cycling Without Age Williamsburg Launches... 1 WAB General Membership Meeting.......... 1 Member Information...................... 2 Website Tip............................. 2 From the President s Desk.................. 3 Ride Calendar............................ 4 Advertisements.......................... 4-10 Out of Bounds........................... 5 Trail Mix............................... 5 Eastern Tandem Rally..................... 6 Ride Classifications....................... 7 Eastern Tandem Rally Pictures.............. 8 On the Road............................. 9 The Pass is Made......................... 9 Invalid................................. 10 William Harris Takes Two Silvers............ 10 WAB General Membership Meeting Our next General Membership Meeting is Tuesday September 11th. and entertainment. All of our sponsors attended and were recognized including: Deana representing WAB, The Eco Discovery Foundation and Spoke & Art Provisions, Williamsburg Landing, Edgeworth Park, Ironbound Gym, and Prism Contracting & Engineers. We also picked up several new pilot volunteers and two more potential sponsors. The week after the launch event Rick Nevins headed up a train the trainer program using our well designed training program and our trishaw that arrived immediately after the launch event. Several official training sessions have been run since then and by next Friday we will have 22 trained pilots with more sessions being scheduled now. Scheduled senior resident facility rides start July 13th and after that Edgeworth Park will ride every Tuesday, Williamsburg Landing every Wednesday and Verena every Friday. If you want to get involved in this great program please contact Rick Nevins at rick@nevins.com or myself at mark927@aol.com.

Access the library by logging in and clicking on the Cue Sheets Icon on the website home page. All of these routes are now mapped on the website Ride With GPS (www.ridewithgps. com). The routes are grouped into several categories: 1. Williamsburg Area Bicyclists this is the main category and contains over 100 routes. A naming convention is used to easily identify the starting location and route distance. For example, the route CC #7 - Charles City Cruise (36 Miles) starts in Charles City and is 36 miles. 2. Williamsburg Area Bicycle Rides (Route Book) this category contains the 26 routes in the club book. 3. Miscellaneous this category contains about 20 miscellaneous routes that are on Ride With GPS but not in one of the above two categories. You ll notice there is also a category called Richmond Area Bicycling Association RABA that contains some routes on Ride With GPS that are in the RABA group. Member TIP: When you click on the Cue Sheets icon, you will be taken to a page which lists the starting points for the routes in these categories on the left side of the page. Click on any start point to see a list of the routes starting from that point, along with other information about the route, such as distance, climb, description and map. Click on the map to see more detail such as the elevation profile and more detailed map. Leader TIP: When you post information about an upcoming ride on the Message Board, you can include a link to the route in the library. Do this by navigating to the route in the library and then cutting/pasting the URL from your browser into the Message Board post. Member TIP: Print a Cue Sheet by clicking on the Generate Cue Sheet button or the Get Cuesheet link in the library for the route. This will take you to a page where you can customize options such as font size or cue sheet format. The defaults should provide a good result. Then click the Get Cuesheet button. This will download a PDF file to your computer that you can print. Questions? Contact: Rick Nevins, Webmaster - webmaster@wabonline.org

From the President s Desk During a recent rainy day at Bike Virginia, I got to thinking about how much weather effects what we do, how we do it and even how we eat. And not just the actual weather, but the forecasting we depend on to help us make decisions. In no particular order, here are my observations: Weather effects what we eat. Despite my best efforts to ensure there was just the right amount of Gatorade and oranges at the rest stops based on our historical consumption experience - on a particular day, almost all of it came back. In other words, several hundred cyclists simply ignored (or refused to eat/drink) oranges and Gatorade. Why? Because the temperature was in the mid to low 70 s not the upper 80 s as is typical this time of year. Apples, bananas, sandwiches and water were popular. Who knew?! As many of us discovered this past winter, riding in less-than-ideal conditions is less-than-ideal. Example: the morning started out with a light mist but soon turned into off and on rain showers. The riders adjusted their plans, i.e. riding shorter routes than planned or not riding at all. Some riders, having chosen the perfect start time and pace, were rewarded with a rain-free ride. Others got soaked continuously. Good karma/bad karma? I have no idea. Tuesday was the day it rained off and on nearly all day. It appeared every weather service agreed Wednesday would be much the same. Since Wednesday was the last day of the tour and therefore the day everyone would be traveling home, whether cycling that day or not, several hundred riders packed up and left Tuesday afternoon. Those who stayed were rewarded for their optimism with a beautiful, partly cloudy, day on Wednesday. Who knew?! As we endure the hot days of summer and contemplate whether or not the heat index is too high to enjoy a ride, think back on those cold winter days. Happy travels. Out of Bounds by Ken McFarland (kenmcfarland482@gmail.com) The extreme VA summer heat is here again, and large events are fewer in number. In August, the Cycle NC Mountain Ride and the Lancaster Covered Bridge Classic are good events. A few recommendations for the fall would be the PBA Surry Century 9/8, the RABA Heart of VA Festival 9/15, and the Sea Gull Century 10/6. Check the Out of Bounds list for detailed event information. And if you are a real advance planner, registration is now open for the 2019 Cycle NC Coastal Ride, next April in Edenton. If past is any indication, it will sell out by January. Rumor has it a contingent of WABits will once again cycle to the event! Trail Mix by Ted Hanson (thanson@earthlink,net) On Wednesday June 20th, the Virginia Capital Trail Foundation hosted an appreciation reception for Charles City and Williamsburg area volunteers for this year s CAP2CAP event. The event was at the Williamsburg Winery, and, of course, showcased their wines. Approximately 40 folks participated, including Williamsburg resident Shelley Case of the VCTF Board, and Cat Anthony and Katie Rothert of VCTF headquarters. About half the attendees were WAB members, with the others from the Williamsburg area and Charles City County communities. Also, during June, two members of the VCT Ambassadors shared lunch with Cheryl White, the newly hired Executive Director of the Elizabeth River Trail Foundation (ERT), which runs along the waterfront in Norfolk. The discussion centered on forming an Ambassador group for the ERT, and then ranged from funding to programs to users. The ERT currently runs 10.5 miles from Norfolk State University to Old Dominion University. There are 11 distinct segments over the distance of the Trail, each with a different theme and amenities. Expansion plans are in the works, including an extension into Virginia Beach. As expected, this is an urban trail, in contrast to the VCT which, with the exception of Henrico to Richmond, is essentially rural. The Elizabeth River Trail Foundation embarked on a multimillion dollar fund raising campaign to add more amenities and fund the expansion in April, and within 2 months has commitments of over 50%. Sound like a place to check out via bicycle? Here s the web link: http://elizabethrivertrail.org. Eastern Tandem R ally by Reed Nestor The Eastern Tandem Rally returned to Williamsburg for the first time in 25 years on June 15-17. Reed and Karen Nester hosted the rally, which attracted 120 tandem teams from 22 states and Ontario, with the furthest traveling couples from California and Oregon. Friday was Virginia Capital Trail Day with a remote start from Chickahominy Riverfront Park and routes in Charles City County utilizing the Virginia Capital Trail and adjacent rural roads. The big ride was on Saturday, with a mass start from the Williamsburg Woodlands Hotel, rest stops at Waller Mill Park and Little Creek Reservoir Park (provided by BikeWalk Williamsburg) and lunch at York River State Park. One of the highlights of Saturday s ride was 120 tandems riding down Duke of Gloucester Street at the beginning of the ride. The rally concluded on Sunday with a ride down the Colonial Parkway and additional loops on local roads. This rally showcases the economic benefits of sports tourism to the greater Williamsburg area. We were headquartered at the Williamsburg Woodlands Hotel. Many people came early and stayed later to enjoy our many attractions. There were opportunities for mid-ride lunch stops at restaurants in Charles City County, and restaurants in the New Town area if you preferred lunch after the ride. The Friday evening Ice Cream Social was catered by Baskin-Robbins at the Williamsburg Community Building. Participants were encouraged to have their Friday dinner at a Colonial Williamsburg Tavern or at one of our many restaurants in Merchants Square area. Our Saturday lunch was at York River State Park catered by Pierce s Bar-B-Que. Our Saturday banquet was catered by William and Mary at the Matoaka Woods Room in the School of Education building with entertainment provided by Williamsburg musician Timothy Seaman. Our Sunday rides had a special stop at the Spoke & Art Provisions Co. on the Virginia Capital Trail. The rally concluded with a boxed lunch catered by Baker s Crust Restaurant. We heard numerous complements from our rally participants about the beauty of the Williamsburg area and the friendliness of its residents and businesses. Important to making this rally a success were the high quality of our state and local park and recreation facilities and the investments made by our local governments to improve our bicycle infrastructure. Since the Eastern Tandem Rally last came to Williamsburg in 1993, there have been over 70 miles of bicycle facilities built in the greater Williamsburg area. This helped make this year s rally safe and enjoyable. Williamsburg is a great place for a major bicycle event. Future improvements such as bringing the Virginia Capital Trail into Williamsburg will make it even better. You can check out the Eastern Tandem Rally routes on the ETR web site easterntandemrally.org under the ETR tab. There is also a RideWithGPS Event Page ridewithgps.com/events/57516-eastern-tandem-rally-williamsburg-2018. Please check Page 6 for scenes from the big event! WILLIAMSBURG AREA BICYCLISTS PAGE 6

By Rick Nevins Ride CLassifications There has been some discussion (and possibly confusion) lately about our ride classifications, as well as the responsibilities of both the ride leaders and the ride participants when on a club ride. This is not a simple topic to address, but I will do my best! First on the subject of ride classifications as shown on our website calendar, we define them as: A 18-20 mph B+ 16-18 B 14-16 C 12-14 D 10-12 Casual Up to 10 mph, with no one left behind These are average paces that you should have at the end of the ride. The range reflects the fact that the final average pace may be impacted by terrain, group makeup, wind or other factors. Please keep in mind that in order to finish with an average pace of (for example) 14 mph, means that at times the rolling pace may be significantly higher or lower than 14 mph it does not mean that the rolling pace will always be within the designated range. The actual rolling pace at any time will be influenced heavily by the wind and grade. The ride leaders should: Ride at a pace that results in a final average within the classification range. Keep track of all the riders and ensure all are OK. This may mean adjusting the pace and/or re-grouping at intersections. Consider designating a sweep to ride with the slower rider if needed. The participants should: Clarify with the leader the planned pace and terrain if unsure. They should be comfortable they can maintain the pace, or at least know the roads and be OK with riding alone if necessary. Refrain from riding faster than the planned group pace (ahead of the leader) unless it is agreed with the leader and re-group locations are designated. I hope this helps but if you have any questions or comments, please email me at rick@nevins.com WILLIAMSBURG AREA BICYCLISTS PAGE 7

On The Road By Rick Nevins, Ride Coordinator As summer has officially arrived, so has heat, vacations, kids off from school and generally a lot going on! On June 23rd, about 20 cyclists risked a chance of rain and greatly enjoyed the country roads in New Kent County at our New Kent Winery ride. The heavy rains the previous day provided some challenges. Ask Steve Nunn and the other B+ riders how they literally had to ford a stream crossing a road on their bikes! Steve s comment was all he needed was a run to have done a triathlon! Oh well, it provided conversation as we enjoyed wine, cheese and other goodies on the winery porch afterwards! In July, there is a full slate of weekend riding opportunities. A pub ride (on July 7th), the Park to Park event (on July 14th), South to Sussex Courthouse (on July 14th), another winery ride (on July 21st) and Kitty Preston s Big Loop ride (on July 28th). Check elsewhere in this newsletter and on the website calendar for more info! Unfortunately due to lack of enough participation, the Wednesday evening joint PBA/WAB Yorktown ride has been discontinued. But we may be starting up a regular Saturday morning ride out of Jamestown Settlement at 9 AM. (at least on Saturdays when there isn t another conflicting local ride). Paul Baker will lead a B+ ride and we will see what level of interest there is. If anyone would like to lead C or B paces Saturday mornings, let me know! The PASS IS MADE by Mark Holt The old man lasted till June 27th and on that day (which will live on in infamy) Fran Wenbert zoomed past your editor in the club mileage race cresting 5000 miles while the worn out editor had managed only 4999. In the least surprising cycling result of 2018, Fran once again leads the club in mileage. When interviewed (by himself no less) Holt whined about out of state travel, sore achilles, his defeats (yes plural) at Nationals, the heat, the humidity, politics, the incredible pressures of retirement, and many other inane excuses. Fran said she was on her way to 12000 miles and more than 12 centuries for the year and that Holt should just enjoy being able to move his ancient legs now and then. Vegas will no longer take bets on the 2018 mileage race as the final tally seems to be a foregone conclusion. However, bets are still rolling in on Fran s total mileage and century count: 3 to 1 on 12000 and 12 5 to 1 on 12500 and 14 9 to 1 on 13000 and 16 20 to 1 on 20 centuries Place your bets now folks!! Invalid by Linda Coppinger June 15, 16 and 17 saw the Eastern Tandem Rally arrive in Williamsburg and ride tandem style on the trails and backroads, as well as Duke of Gloucester Street, for all three days in glorious weather. Your Stoker should have been in her element, right? 120 stokers, all pedaling, all drafting, all in single file on the Colonial Parkway. 120 tandems of most varieties, from simple to fancy. Tourists, racers, weekend dabblers, hammerheads from as far away as Oregon and as close as Stoker herself, local as is possible. Yes, it would have been fun. Except for the broken humerus thing. Stoker has immersed herself in various dictionaries to try to determine if broken can be interpreted to mean, or at least connote, NOT. If that were possible, That s not funny would merely be repetitive of the answer to What happened to your arm? Results are not final, but Stoker is not hopeful. If appears that That s not funny will remain a seriously disturbed and disturbing pun, as are all puns, and cannot be ignored as a mere definition. Stoker did try to lighten the mood by claiming that she had tried like Icarus to fly down the stairwell and lost the tug-of-war with gravity. The joke fell as flat as the broken humor of the pun. First, it was a complete lie and could not be told with any conviction. The young physical therapist outed that: No really, he said, was it something amazing or just klutz? Of course it was klutz, an old lady slipping on the floor in her home, the peak of the bell curve of fracture causation. Besides that, Icarus was just not an inspired exemplar. In fact, as a high school student studying mythology, the person who eventually became Your Correspondent thought Icarus was a moron. He was warned by his stoker, a credible authority (the manufacturer) that his wings would melt. But Icarus ignored wisdom because, um Hm. Maybe I should reread the story. It wasn t because he had a better apartment. That s the modern version. Icarus did get his due, drowning in his own hubris; no other conclusion was possible. No, Stoker did not try to emulate either the myth or the Great Landlord. She was grounded by boring old clumsiness. So Stoker found a fellow invalid, a stoker who had broken her hip in a cycling accident three weeks prior to the Rally. We discussed invalidism, and invalidation, which are the same word based on Latin for weak. We watched with longing as the 120 tandems all started the ride at once, and then boarded a bus which took us to the Governor s Palace. There we saw the portrait of the Even Greater Landlord, King George III, soon to be invalided by madness and invalidated by stubborn miscalculation. Old George could have used a good stoker. A stoker keeps the Captain s hind parts connected to his seat, so they don t creep up onto his shoulders. Had King George sponsored a tandem rally, we all might be British. And based on the fun factor of that weekend, we would all have enjoyed it. Even the invalid.
