Show Bits BALTIMORE COUNTY HORSE SHOW ASSOCIATION 2008 BENEFIT SHOW The 2008 BCHSA Benefit Show will be held at McDonogh School on schedule for this year s show will differ from year s past. Saturday, October 4th. The New this year will be a Short and Long Stirrup Equitation Medal Final that will commence at 8 am, prior to the start of the show in Ring 3. Both divisions will run simultaneously but will be judged and pinned separately. We are looking forward to an exciting inaugural Merit Medal Final! Gather around Ring 3 to watch the competition and cheer on our future equitation champions! The Parent Leadline, our favorite class of the year, will now boast a perpetual trophy to be awarded the winner of this highly competitive class. Proceeds from this class are donated to the Bonnie Thomas Scholarship Fund at the Garrison Forest School. Cost of the class is a donation at the gate. So, parents start practicing, we would love to see our ring full of eager adults riding for that trophy, but more important for the bragging rights that go along with it. Another new addition of an old favorite will be the return of the Baltimore County Horse Show Classic. The Classic will be held within the schedule of classes with a final round being held at the end of the show day. Please see specific Classic information in a separate article regarding dress and the competition requirements. THE BCHSA CLASSIC IS BACK The BCHSA Classic is making a comeback in 2008! Maryland Saddlery will be sponsoring the BCHSA Classic to be held at the BCHSA Benefit Horse & Pony Show. The format for the Classic will be incorporated into existing divisions already offered at the Benefit Show. Three classics will be offered for Junior/Adults (3 ), Children s/adults (2 6 ) and Pony (2, 2 3, 2 6 & 2 9 )the second jumping class in each division will be designated the classic round. Competitors must be pre-entered in the Classic to compete, may not add at the gate, and must announce to the starter prior to entering the ring that they will be riding their classis round. The top scores from each division will then be called back for a second round. Eight places will be awarded in each classis with the high score animal receiving the BCHSA Classic trophy. The Classic being a special prize list addition calls for special attire. Please see page 4 for Classic dress suggestions.

2008 EQUITATION FINALS The BCHSA Medal Finals are scheduled for Saturday, October 11 th at Claddagh Manor in Churchville, MD. We are very excited to announce that Sue Ashe has graciously accepted the invitation to judge our Medal Finals. Ms. Ashe is an R rated judge based in Wellington, Florida, who admittedly spends more time away from home judging some of the major AA shows held around the country. It will be a privilege to have our equitation rider s show in front of her professional eye. Invitations to qualified riders will be sent in September. We ask that each rider return the requested information promptly so that we may include everyone in the Medals Program. TROPHY RETURNS Award winners of 2007, it is time to return, both Benefit Show and End of Year Banquet trophies. Trophies must be returned having been cleaned and polished, and Benefit trophies must have been engraved with the 2007 winner s name. Board members Katie Cooper and Marcy Ginsburg will be contacting everyone regarding the return of BCHSA trophies. The deadline for trophy return is September 14 the. Please be advised that there is an imposed fine for late returns, and there is a cleaning fee attached to all trophies. Remember how excited you were to receive your trophy last year, please return by the due date so that the 2008 winner can experience that same excitement.

2008 FALL OPEN MEETING & BOARD ELECTIONS Each year at the end of the show season the BCHSA holds an open meeting for membership. Part of the business that evening is the nomination and election of new board members and officers of the Association. This fall there are a number of positions that will need to be filled; there are positions open at the board level both as members, and the 2 year terms of the Officers will all expire at the end of 2008. If you are interested in running for any position on the board, please forward your name through e-mail to the President, you may access the address through the website. You must be able to commit to a three year term as a member of the board, or a two year term in a Director s position; the board now meets once a month throughout the year for business and management purposes, and is responsible for a number of fund raising events. If you have any questions regarding commitment and or requirements please ask any board member, they will be glad to fill you in. Please seriously consider getting involved at the Board level, membership support is crucial for the betterment of the BCHSA. BCHSA SPECIAL AWARDS Baltimore County Horse Show Association has a number of special awards that are presented each year at the Banquet of Champions. These awards are given to individuals who have been nominated by a member of the BCHSA, and are then voted on by a special committee. BCHSA presents awards for sportsmanship to both a junior and senior member of the Association. Any present member of the Baltimore County Horse Show Association may nominate an individual for one of these awards. The Distinguished Service Award is presented to a member of the BCHSA who has provided exemplary support and commitment to the Association. The Golden Horseshoe Award is the BCHSA s Lifetime Achievement award, and is presented only on rare occasions to individuals who have performed meritorious service to the Association. Please take a moment to consider nominating an individual or group who may be deserving of any of the Associations awards. Please compose a short written nomination essay with supporting information should be sent via e-mail to the Board of Directors at president@bchsa.org. Deadline for nominations will be October 10th.

CLASSIC ATTIRE Riders competing in a Classic at locally and nationally ranked horse shows are most often seen wearing a shadbelly (a more formal style of riding jacket). While it is not required to wear a shad belly it is highly encouraged. If you do not own one Maryland Saddlery has some they will rent for a price of $75.00 for the weekend. Please stop by and talk to Hope to reserve your shad belly early, she has a limited number available for BCHSA members. USED TACK & CLOTHING SALE As the show season winds down and many of the kids are outgrowing or have already outgrown their riding clothes comes the dilemma of how to pass the old clothes along? We may have the answer! BCHSA will provide tables at the Benefit Show, for a fee of $25, to anyone who has tack, boots, ratcatchers coats and jods/breeches for sale. Individuals will be responsible for manning their own table while selling their merchandise. Reservation of a table must be made prior to the Benefit show date to ensure a table. If interested please contact Miranda Kolbe, MKolbe@mcdonogh.org to reserve a table.

CONGRATULATIONS & WELL DONE! Each year at the Banquet of Champions each attendee receives a program of the evening s activities, lists of award winners and past champions. In 2008 to celebrate the BCHSA s thirtieth anniversary the Benefit Book and Banquet will be combined. The intent of this book is for you to keep it and look back at the year 2008. Included in the BCHSA Yearbook will be member information, photos, the banquet program, member congratulations, sponsors and space for the kids to sign each others book. This publication then becomes the avenue in which riders, trainers, parents and grandparents may offer congratulations to one another. Advertising rates are as follows: Inside front/back or outside covers: $ 200 Half page-$ 75 Full page-$ 125 Business card- $40 Advertising forms will be found as a download on the website and trainers will also have copies available. All art work must be camera ready, clear and able to be reproduced clearly. This year we will not accept out of focus, fuzzy and previously reproduced items for publication. This publication is meant to be special for one and all, a keepsake as it were to celebrate the anniversary of BCHSA. MEMBER INFORMATION As many of you know the points system has been in disarray for a good part of the show season. We have been experiencing problems with our points system, and it has been more extensive and wide ranging than we had first thought. Members of the board have spent hours pouring over results, judges cards and the computer program to try and find the glitch in the system; our software manager is working with us, and we hope to have all points issues resolved shortly. Please bear with us as we continue to correct the problem. Please take the time to review your membership information on the BCHSA website. Check to make sure horse information and individual membership information is correct, if you find any discrepancies please-mail the pointkeeper@bchsa.org. human error is more to blame, and while we only have a few shows remaining in the 2008 season we are requesting that when entering classes that all information put on an entry form is complete and correct. Please make sure that names of riders match their registered membership name. When entering horses/ponies please make sure their proper show name is used, not a barn name or nickname, and please do not change a horses/pony s show name without notifying the point keeper. If we humans can keep our information correct we should be able to master the machines that have been holding us hostage this show season. The tired and cross-eyed board thank you in advance for your close attention to these details, we are very close to completing the mammoth task of correction. During this long process we have found that

BENEFIT SHOW SPONSORS The annual BCHSA Benefit Horse & Pony Show is the primary fund raising activity for our association. In the past we have produced a Benefit Book/Program which has been filled with advertisements, congratulations, etc. This year we will be producing a new type of Yearbook which will be published in conjunction with the Banquet of Champions. Advertisements and congratulation pages will be one of the many segments of the publication. For this year s Benefit Show we will be offering Raffles and the opportunity to sponsor a division. The cost of a Division Sponsor will be $ 100; all sponsors will be acknowledged throughout the day of the Benefit Show, and will be listed on the BCHSA website. Board members will be contacting individuals and barn groups over the next few weeks to solicit sponsorships. Please consider supporting BCHSA s fundraising effort by becoming a Division Sponsor.. BCHSA BENEFIT RAFFLE Our annual Benefit Raffle will be held at McDonogh on October 4th. There will be no prior ticket sales except at the Benefit Show. This year we will be raffling a table of 10 for the Banquet of Champions. Tickets will be $20 and will be sold all day. Drawing will be at the end of the show, you do not need to be present to win. This is a great chance to support BCHSA and invite friends to join you at our year end awards. 2008 BCHSA Fall Schedule Please mark your calendar now for the following BCHSA Membership Activities Horse Shows September 6 St. John s @ GFS September 13 Hunting Ground October 4 BCHSA Benefit @ McDonogh
