Harriers History Snippet Recalling Pack Runs - Norm Wilton Norm Wilton joined harriers in the early 1970s. Always a team man, his dedicated work for the club was recognised with a life membership. These recollections were penned for the 1987 75 th Jubilee celebrations. The first two miles would be a warm-up, then maybe a few exercises. After that three or four runners at a time would start sprinting between lamp-posts, moving over for the next four, all this approximately for a mile down a straight. The pack would then re-gather for about the next two miles and form an Indian-file with the last runners sprinting to the front, then the next and so on. After a mile of this the pack would bunch A tired but happy Norm Wilton 1986 up and run together until about a mile from home we would split the pack into groups of three or four similarly-paced runners and space them a lamp-post apart. When the order was given all groups would set out for the clubrooms trying to catch the group in front but having to keep their own group intact. In this way harriers could run as a pack but enjoy a competitive workout at the same time Cross Country Series 2014 The next race will be held on 27 July at Whangaehu Masterton and will be followed by the prize giving back at the club rooms.morning Tea Duty - prize giving everyone please bring a plate. Entries are now open for the newest running and walking event on the Wairarapa calendar, the Tora Coastal Challenge. The challenge will be held on Saturday, September 6, and features a 6km or 18km run/walk or a 32km run/team relay run. It will see participants cover the scenic route, the Tora Coastal Walk, walked by hundreds of visitors every year. Event manager Rachael Fletcher said there has been huge interest in the event from people all over New Zealand. "Since announcing the event, we've been overwhelmed by the response from people and would now encourage them to enter to secure a spot in the event," she says. "The Tora Coastal Challenge has really captured people's interest. "It's the first time the track has been opened to the public in this way, allowing them access to previously inaccessible stunning farmland and native bush along the spectacular South Wairarapa coastline." All ages and abilities are catered for during the one-day event while all profits go to The Martinborough Community Centre Project. All participants start at the new Stony Bay Lodge on the Tora Coast, which is a 45-minute drive from Martinborough. The challenge features a family-friendly 6km leg that follows the coastline, while the three-person team event is perfect for corporates wanting an office challenge or a group of friends wanting to tackle something new. Entries are limited to 100 teams and 400 individuals.
