His dream is to one day be a cartoonist for a big company such as Walt Disney or Warner Bros. One of his biggest inspirations is Chuck Jones, the creator of many of Warner Bros. most famous characters. This includes Looney Tunes which are Caleb s favorite cartoons because they are wacky and goofy. Caleb was also inspired by Nickelodeon s SpongeBob SquarePants. Caleb loves to draw and says he has been drawing since he was a little goober. Caleb says that once he lifted a pen/pencil, he started doodling right away. Caleb draws inspiration from his childhood experiences and whatever he is going through in life. Caleb is very talented and does not want to limit his dreams. He is also interested in becoming an illustrator, writer, and comedian. Caleb has a great sense of humor and can make anyone laugh. He writes mini stories and admires Stephen King s work. He recently read the book It. When Caleb was told that this newsletter article would be published in the state of Maine, he asked if he could include a letter that he had written to Stephen King in the hopes he might see it. Caleb also enjoys the work of Tim Burton and is hoping he and Stephen King decide to collaborate one day. Drawing above is a cartoon that Caleb created called Shelly and she is humming a song.

I really enjoy working with the 3 guys I m supporting. I ve been teaching crafts for the Kremples Center for the last 4 years. I really enjoy teaching and I thought it would be great to bring my talent with me to RRI. The fi rst time I brought out the crafts the guys really seemed to enjoy themselves. We decorated ornaments for their Christmas tree. It made my day to bring these crafts to them and see their smiles as they admired their work. They wanted to make more decorations for the house, so we did. They would look forward to making crafts each time it was my shift. This past month we ve made Mother s Day cards and trinket boxes that they can keep in their room to keep some of their belongings in. This coming month we ll be making frames for their rooms for favorite pictures. We ll also be making bird houses and decorating fl ower pots for fl owers or vegetables. I m looking forward to having many more projects with the guys, and I certainly enjoy watching them work on their projects. I take delight in the big smiles on their faces! My New Sneakers Michelle Leger, Participant Emerald St., Keene, NH I got new sneakers from Ted's Shoe & Sport, I love them! I have already tried running in them and I have shown everyone! I also love the color; my old sneakers only came in black or white, I'm happy to have something different I really wanted to see what my sneakers could do, so me and my staff Lori hiked Robin Hood Park. We were both sore but my sneakers worked great. U V W X Y Z [ \ \ ] ^ _ ` a b X c d e ] ^ X Y f g h

On our trip to pick out fl owers, pots, and potting soil Sherrie picked out some pink and white petunias. We also found a pink and white geranium in a hanging pot to enjoy. When we got home, we spent the afternoon in the driveway planting the petunias in the pots. Sherrie decided that the pink petunia would look nice with the white petunias surrounding it. We talked about how much dirt to fi ll the pots with, not too much, so water will not spill. Dianne enjoyed helping plant the fl owers and making sure they were watered. The deck gets plenty of sunlight for the fl owers and we will be able to enjoy them from the dining table also. ƒ ˆ Š Œ Ž
š œ ž Ÿ š ž ž Ÿ ª ž Ÿ «ž š ž ž ± ž ª ž Ÿ It Takes a Village! Ellis Baum, Regional Director Scarborough, ME Last fall I started getting reports that Sherri, a person we ve supported for a very long time, was having a hard time walking without a great deal of support from her staff. After a battery of tests, the only thing that was clear was that Sherri could not safely walk and would require a wheelchair to get around in her home and the community. After some very minor adjustments, getting around inside her home was pretty easy. However, getting Sherri out of her home was another story. Sherri s house was not wheelchair accessible and required navigating several steps to get in and out. Sherri s team was brought together in hopes of fi nding a solution to this problem. The initial hope was that the state would recognize the need for some adaptive equipment and provide funding for a wheelchair ramp. Sadly, this would not be the case and Sherri s options were to pay for a ramp independently, have RRI pay for a ramp, or move from her home. Oh, did I mention that we were quoted a cost of $10-14k for a new ramp for Sherri s home? None of these options were very palatable, which meant the search for creativity was upon us. After a slow start, a creative option was discovered. Our own Shawn Girard found a second hand wheelchair ramp on Craig s List in Massachusetts. However, this was still very much a shot in the dark. During my search for creative solutions, I learned more about wheelchair ramps than I ever imagined possible. Height, width, angle, city code, and public domain were just a few of the factors that would determine if this ramp would be a successful fi t at Sherri s home. Slowly but surely, each item was checked off and the ramp was a go! Dan McAllister, a friend of Dan s, and I then transported the 5,569,202 parts that could transform into a ramp to Sherri s home, where we would then tackle the next hurdle. Who would put those 5,569,202 parts together without any instructions. Once again, the search for creativity was on and once again someone right here at RRI was the solution. Our own Annette Hotham has a brother who is a contractor r and just so happened to be an experienced wheelchair ramp assembler. Within a few short days, the 5,569,202 parts made their transformation (give or take a part of two) into a fully functioning wheelchair ramp. Sherri was offi cially on the move again! This story truly captures the spirit that goes on at RRI every day. This was a case of not accepting anything but the best solution to a problem even though it also meant the most diffi cult solution to achieve. Completing this project truly felt insurmountable at times, but the more people became involved, the closer we got to the end. I would like to thank everyone who was part of making this happen as does Sherri! ² ³ µ ¹ ¹ º» ¼ ½ ¾ µ À Á  º» µ Ã Ä Å Æ
