(AP) Brandon Marshall wasn't interested in style points. Sure, the New York Jets' latest win was pretty ugly. There were mistakes, blown opportunities and more injuries. But hanging on and coming away with a 28-23 victory over the Jacksonville Jaguars on Sunday was the only thing that mattered. 2 P a g e

"A win is a win," Marshall said. "It doesn't matter how it looks, how it feels to win. It's hard to get in this league." The Jets (5-3) were facing an embarrassing loss at home and a midseason crisis in Todd Bowles' first season as coach. But Ryan Fitzpatrick threw two touchdown passes while playing with a torn ligament in his left thumb, Chris Ivory ran for two scores and the Jets took advantage of late mistakes by the Jaguars to squeeze out the victory. Blake Bortles was 24 of 40 for 381 yards and two touchdowns, including a 20-yard pass to Bryan Walters with 2:16 left for Jacksonville, which was coming off a bye week. But Marcus Williams came up with his second interception of the game on Jacksonville's next possession as the Jets sent the Jaguars (2-6) to their 13th straight road loss. "We just didn't finish it," coach Gus Bradley said. "You look back on it, a lot of these were self-inflicted, the turnovers and the penalties at inopportune times. We did it to ourselves." Marshall had a diving 20-yard TD catch after the Jets recovered a fumbled punt return late in the fourth quarter, and New York ended a two-game skid in a ragged performance by both sides. "This game was a big game and a must-win game for us," cornerback Darrelle Revis said. "We felt like we were the better team coming in, but at the same time, they gave us a run for our money." The banged-up Jets have a quick turnaround to prepare for former coach Rex Ryan's Buffalo Bills at home on Thursday night. Here are things to know about the Jets' win over the Jaguars: THUMBS UP: Fitzpatrick had no issues with his thumb, which was injured last week at Oakland. He finished 21 of 34 for 272 yards, including touchdowns to Marshall and Eric Decker. During CBS' game broadcast, a sideline reporter said Fitzpatrick told them during a production meeting that he probably wouldn't wait until after the season to have surgery to repair the thumb, and the reporter speculated that Friday could make sense since the Jets play Thursday night. While Fitzpatrick said things are still "up in the air," he acknowledged after the game that Friday is a possibility. "Yes," he said. "I have to get surgery at some point." JAGS' GAFFES: The Jaguars were driving in the fourth quarter, but after a holding call pushed them back, Calvin Pace had a strip-sack of Bortles and recovered the fumble. "I've got to get rid of the ball or take off and run or do something," Bortles said The Jets couldn't do anything on the ensuing possession and were forced to punt but Jacksonville's Nick Marshall fumbled it and Kellen Davis recovered to give New York the ball at the 25. Three plays later, Marshall made his big grab in the back of the end zone that made it 28-16 with 2:41 left. Jacksonville had another chance after Walters' touchdown, but Williams ended it with his second INT. TRAINERS' ROOM: The Jets are dealing with some new key injuries, including a strained right quadriceps for kicker Nick Folk. He was injured during pregame warmups and replaced on kickoffs and field goals by punter Ryan Quigley, who made all four of his extra-point attempts. Folk was scheduled to have an MRI on Monday. Center Nick Mangold left with a neck injury, saying it didn't respond well in the game after he was initially hurt at New England on Oct. 25. ROAD WOES: The Jaguars have the NFL's longest active road losing streak, even though they came close to snapping it Sunday. Their last road win came on Dec. 1, 2013, at Cleveland nearly two years ago. Jacksonville beat Buffalo two weeks ago at London, but that was technically a "home" game for the Jaguars. "It was a positive step," said wide receiver Allen Hurns, who increased his franchise record to six straight games with a TD reception. "At the end of the day, this one hurts." STUFFED UP: After an impressive start to the season, Ivory has been shut down in his last three games. Jacksonville held Ivory to 26 yards on 23 carries. He had just 17 yards on 15 carries at Oakland last week, and 41 on 17 rushes two weeks ago an average of 1.5 yards per carry in those three games. Bortles hit Allen Hurns for 20 yards and then found him again streaking away from Cromartie for a 30- yard touchdown that made it 14-10 with 14 seconds remaining in the second quarter. Former Missouri star Sheldon Richardson expressed support for a group of black football players at his alma mater who are calling for the university's president to resign. "I am dealing with my own issues at the moment, but I am proud of those guys for staying together," the Jets defensive tackle said after Sunday's 28-23 win over the Jacksonville Jaguars. "And as far as Tim [Wolfe], he does need to go," he said of the school president. "That's just my opinion on it." The uproar stems from the belief by some students that Wolfe has not properly addressed issues of racism on campus. On Saturday, it was announced that more than 30 football players plan to boycott team activities and games until Wolfe is removed from office, and Tigers coach Gary Pinkel voiced his support the following day. "The Mizzou family stands as one. We are united. We are behind our players," Pinkel tweeted on Sunday. In a statement released Sunday, Wolfe addressed the concerns of students but didn't say if he plans to resign. Richardson, the NFL's 2013 Defensive Rookie of the Year and 2014 Pro Bowler, told reporters that one of the reasons he attended Missouri was its family atmosphere. But he also hinted that he dealt with similar issues while on campus. "I most definitely support those guys' cause," said Richardson, who played two seasons for the Tigers. "I hope they do stick together. And when game time does come, if this decision hasn't been made, hopefully they stick true to their word... Some stuff happened back then when I was there, but I don't need to go into detail about it. I got my own problems." Richardson, 24, was suspended for the first four games of the 2015 season for violating the league's substance abuse policy. Two weeks after the league announced the suspension, he was arrested in Missouri on July 14 for resisting arrest after he was clocked driving as fast as 143 mph with a 12-year-old in the car. It is not clear how much time he would miss after such a procedure on his non-throwing hand. Fitzpatrick was assumed to be waiting until after the season. But during the telecast of the Jaguars-Jets game yesterday, sideline reporter Jamie Erdahl revealed Fitzpatrick had told CBS he probably will have surgery before the end of the season. Erdahl then added "the logical schedule might be this upcoming Friday," given the extra three days between games afforded by the Thursday night game against the Bills. 6 P a g e

When asked after the game by Newsday about the report of a potential Friday procedure, Fitzpatrick seemed surprised and said, "Somebody reported that?" But facing Rex Ryan will add something to the game -- at the very least, in warm-ups. "I'm pretty sure I'll talk to him before the game," said linebacker David Harris, who played six seasons under Ryan from 2009-14. "After that, it's business as usual." Don't expect the emotions of a Rex-Jets reunion to spill over in between the white lines -- at least not for Todd Bowles' team. For them, Thursday's prime-time game against the visiting Bills is about winning the next game on the schedule and defeating another AFC East opponent. "We love Rex here," cornerback Marcus Williams said. "He's a great coach. But it's not about Rex this week. It's about the New York Jets against the Buffalo Bills." "Obviously there's some motivation, said receiver Eric Decker, "but I don't think that's going to change how we approach the week." Ryan and former general manager John Idzik were fired Dec. 29 after the Jets' 4-12 finish in 2014. But he won over his players with his fiery disposition, his tell-it-like-it-is attitude and his brash claims that the Jets eventually would dominate the division. Brandon Marshall didn't play for the ultimate players' coach, but he knows all about Ryan. "There are going to be some who look at their sideline and jaw back and forth. Rex will jaw back and forth," Marshall said. "Pretty much all of the guys in this locker room and most people in this facility love Rex -- great coach and great person. Hopefully things work out for him in Buffalo, just not when we play him." Ryan, however, downplayed his return to MetLife Stadium. "It's just another opponent right now," he said after the Bills' 33-17 win over the Dolphins on Sunday. "Will that change when I'm in there? That's a possibility... It's all about you're playing another team. And I know that team really well... And it's no more than that -- I can promise you. It'll be the same way I'm answering it right now until at the end. The Jets eked out a 28-23 win over the Jaguars Sunday at MetLife Stadium to end a two-game losing streak and improve to 5-3. But it wasn't easy. With Jacksonville threatening to go ahead late in the fourth quarter, veteran outside linebacker Calvin Pace stripped Jaguars quarterback Blake Bortles and recovered the football for the Jets with 5:16 remaining. The Jets turned the fumble into seven points and a 28-16 lead when Brandon Marshall caught a 20-yard touchdown pass from Ryan Fitzpatrick with 2:41 left. The Jaguars quickly responded, racing 72 yards in three plays and less than 25 seconds, as Bortles connected with Bryan Walters for a 20-yard TD. But in the end the Jaguars (2-6) couldn't pull off the upset. With 40 seconds to go, Jets cornerback Marcus Williams intercepted his second pass of the afternoon to clinch the win. Quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick, playing with a torn ligament in his left thumb, completed 21 of 34 passes for 272 yards and two touchdown. Eric Decker caught six passes for 79 yards and a TD. Marshall, who is dealing with a toe and ankle injury, finished with four catches for 44 yards. He also recovered an onside kick and a fumble by Chris Ivory late in the game. The Jets running game was a non-factor for the second week in a row. Ivory was held to 26 yards on 23 carries but did score twice on short runs. The Jets' injury list took another hit. Complicating matters is the fact that the Jets have a short week of preparation before hosting Rex Ryan's Buffalo Bills on Thursday night. Starting right guard Willie Colon (sore knee) was inactive for the game and replaced by Brian Winters and center Nick Mangold (sore neck) started the game but was pulled with 4:33 left in the second quarter. He was replaced by Wesley Johnson, who started in place of Mangold last week in Oakland. Cornerback Antonio Cromartie also left the game with a thigh injury. But perhaps most alarming is the fact that kicker Nick Folk injured his right quad in the pregame warmups, resulting in punter Ryan Quigley handling kickoff, field-goal and extra-point duties. Quigley made all four of his conversions, although one banged off an upright. Bortles completed 24 of 40 passes for 381 yards with two touchdowns. He threw two interceptions, fumbled the ball away once and was sacked five times. The wide receiver was struggling to find speed, to get separation. But after catching only three balls for 24 yards, all Marshall did was find an extra gear for an acrobatic 20-yard touchdown catch, recover an onside kick and recover Chris Ivory's fumble in the final 2:41 to secure a 28-23 win over Jacksonville on Sunday at MetLife Stadium. 8 P a g e

"Brandon had a frustrating game in terms of not getting a lot of balls and comes up with a huge play at the end," Ryan Fitzpatrick said. "He's the guy that gets the onside kick, makes the fumble recovery. I thought that was just a great example of him staying in it and really playing hard in all phases." Marshall knew as well as anyone that he had plenty of company in that regard. Fitzpatrick was playing with a torn ligament in his left thumb, receiver Eric Decker is fighting a lingering knee injury, guard Willie Colon was inactive because of his knees, and center Nick Mangold went out because of a lingering neck injury. "In this league, it's can you still make plays banged up?" Marshall said. "The staff did such an amazing job to get me to this point where I could suit up. Once they gave me the green light, I wasn't thinking about how I felt." When it became clear that Marshall was struggling early, Fitzpatrick focused on Decker, who had six receptions for 79 yards, including a 7-yard touchdown catch that gave the Jets a 7-3 lead. Decker, too, downplayed all the injuries, saying professionals find ways to play through it. What thrilled him was how the offense responded whenever the Jaguars got close, driving 73 yards to score on Ivory's 1-yard run late in the third quarter for a 21-13 lead and turning a muffed punt into Marshall's TD with 2:41 left for a 28-16 lead. "That's big," Decker said. "You could easily cave in, especially when [the Jags] score before halftime and get the ball to start the third. For us to answer back on some of those scores is huge. Brandon made a huge play at the end that was crucial, and the defense made a couple big plays that were crucial." The challenge for the offense was increased by the failure of the running game, which gained only 29 yards on 24 carries by Ivory and Zac Stacy. "In the four-minute offense, you want to move the chains, run the ball," Decker said. "When you get a yard or two a carry, that makes it very difficult. We need to get Ivory going and get the push up front." But the Jets did enough to win. As Marshall said, "It's who has the poise to go into the deep water and maintain." The next Sunday, he's the hero who moved from safety to cornerback when Antonio Cromartie was injured and made two bookend interceptions at the start and finish of a 28-23 victory over Jacksonville. Williams was in the right place in the first quarter for a tipped ball he returned to the Jacksonville 32 to set up the Jets' second touchdown. When the Jaguars got the ball with 54 seconds left, it was Williams who again picked off Blake Bortles to put the win in the bank. Oh, and he made three tackles, got a halfsack, defended three passes and was credited with one quarterback hurry on a blitz. It was a case of big-time redemption after hearing a week of criticism. "I don't pay attention to last week," Williams said. "I'm just trying to get better every single day and focus on the plays I need to make. Coming in there and making those plays when Cro went down, it's next man up." 9 P a g e

Although Dion Bailey started in place of injured Calvin Pryor at safety, Williams, who usually plays cornerback, replaced him in the first quarter. That's where he was playing on his first interception. Cromartie was beaten badly on Bortles' 30-yard TD pass to Allen Hurns just before halftime. Williams took over at cornerback when Cromartie left the game in the fourth quarter. "Whatever position the coach feels I need to be at, I'm going to go out there and get it done," Williams said. "He trusted me. When my number is called, I can focus on any position that's needed." It became a case of musical chairs in the secondary as the Jets' patchwork defense gave up 436 yards but forced three of four Jacksonville turnovers (there was another on special teams). When Williams moved to corner, Bailey returned to safety and led the Jets with six tackles and added a half-sack. Bailey was injured in the fourth quarter and replaced by Rontez Miles, making his NFL debut. "A couple guys went down, but we do have a lot of depth," cornerback Darrelle Revis said. "Marcus was banged up for a couple plays, but he caught the game-winning interceptions for us. It's a lot on his plate, [but] Marcus is not afraid to step in and make plays." Revis said the Jets "were on our heels" in the fourth quarter, clinging to a 21-16 lead as Bortles drove the Jaguars down the field. But linebackers Demario Davis and Calvin Pace combined to force a fumble by Bortles that Pace recovered at the Jets' 34. "That was big for us," Revis said. "Jacksonville hit us with their hardest punch, and we stood up." When Williams made the clinching interception, his teammates celebrated his success for weathering a week-long storm. Against the Jaguars, who entered allowing a league-low 3.52 yards a carry, Ivory had just 26 yards on 23 attempts and the Jets had 29 net yards on 28 tries. Eric Decker made six catches for 79 yards and a TD. Brandon Marshall had only four catches for 44 yards, but he hauled in the pull-away score (a 20-yard TD pass from Fitzpatrick). But overall, there were too many stalled drives and missed opportunities. DEFENSE CThe oldest guy on the team made the biggest play. Calvin Pace thwarted a potential comeback by the Jaguars when he sacked Blake Bortles, stripped the ball and recovered it with 5:16 left. But had the defense not given up so many big plays to the Jags (436 total yards), the Jets wouldn't have needed lategame heroics. Marcus Williams rebounded from his rough start in Oakland with two interceptions and rookie Lorenzo Mauldin made the first two sacks of his career. Buster Skrine had a rough game, which he admitted. "I put that series on myself," he said of the Jaguars' last TD drive. "I gave up two seam routes. I knew they were running them, they completed them. BRyan Quigley was called into action after Nick Folk (quad strain) was unable to kick field goals or extra points. He did a decent job, hitting on all four of his PATs. Quigley pinned the Jags inside the 20 three times, but he also had punts of 29, 30 and 31 yards, the latter helped set up a Jaguars score before the half. Cornerback Antonio Cromartie provided a big boost by returning a kickoff 54 yards -- his longest since his rookie season in San Diego (2006). COACHING The same issues -- defensive breakdowns, questionable play-calling and clock management -- cropped up. Injuries no doubt affected decision-making on certain downs, but Bowles and Chan Gailey often seem content to sit on the ball and let the clock run out. "It's obvious my role is just to go in and get the quarterback," he said. Mauldin was a third-round draft pick. "It didn't matter where I went, but I'm glad the Jets drafted me,'' he said.. Unlikely heroes came to the rescue. Punter Ryan Quigley hit all four extra-point attempts and kicked off after Nick Folk injured his right quad in warm-ups. Rookie linebacker Lorenzo Mauldin recorded two of the Jets six sacks. And Marcus Williams who missed six tackles last week intercepted two passes, including one that sealed the game with 0:43 remaining. Eye-catching Fitzpatrick found Jeff Cumberland with a 44-yard catch-and-run gain in the third after the Jaguars had cut the lead to 14-13. Chris Ivory finished the drive with his second 1-yard TD. Costly mistakes After Fitzpatrick was sacked in the third at the Jets 22, D Brickashaw Ferguson was flagged for unnecessary roughness, pushing back Quigley to punt from the 11. The Jaguars took over at the Jets 43, and the drive ended with Myers 39-yard field goal to cut the deficit to 14-13. Ivory fumbled with 1:07 remaining, but Marshall saved the day by wrestling it away from Paul Posluszny at the Jets 49. He raised his right arm and chopped the football out of Bortles hands. Then he chased down the fumble, recovering it in a scrum. One of the oldest outside linebackers in the NFL had come to the rescue of the Jets flagging defense Sunday in a crucial moment late in the fourth quarter of a 28-23 victory. Earlier, so had one of the league s youngest outside linebackers in rookie Lorenzo Mauldin, who recorded his first two career sacks. The old man and the rookie. A veteran who has played 179 career games and a 23-year-old newcomer who has played seven. A man with a shaved head and a kid with dyed green dreadlocks (Mauldin underwent a makeover after last week s loss in Oakland). The unlikely duo accounted for three of the Jets season-high six sacks. One week after missing 20 tackles in a sloppy loss to Oakland, the Jets (5-3) accounted for 14 quarterback hurries, forced four turnovers two interceptions by Marcus Williams, Pace s strip sack and a recovered muffed punt and produced those six sacks in an uneven, but effective performance. Pace s sack might have been the biggest play, coming with 5:16 remaining in the game. The Jaguars trailed, 21-16, but were driving. They had a first down at the Jets 20 when the fumble occurred. "It was a momentum-changer," Darrelle Revis said. "They were driving and made a couple of big plays. And then the momentum shifted for us a little bit and gave us a break. " And Mauldin gave the underperforming pass rush a jolt. He s come a long way since the season opener, when he was carted off the field in a scary scene. He took two steps after a play in his debut and collapsed to the turf. He later was diagnosed with a concussion. Mauldin who had a full sack in the third thanks to good pass coverage and two half-sacks in the first half as well as four quarterback hurries saw dramatically increased playing time. It came mostly on third down and at the expense of Quinton Coples. "I ve always been told: Once you get one sack, more are going to come," Mauldin said. "That s what my mind-set is." Mauldin, a third-round draft pick out of Louisville, spoke after the game about his "coming-out party" last week in Oakland, when he felt he made a difference for the first time in his professional career. "All I did was run off the ball in Oakland," he said. "I got a QB pressure. I just told myself, along with [outside linebackers coach Mark] Collins, basically saying, Just run off the ball. Just run. "Because that s what I do best. I just take whatever the tackle gives me, and I m going to beat him." Pace did not talk to the media after the game, but his teammates were not surprised by his play. "I don t have to marvel. I m used to him doing it," said Sheldon Richardson, who shared a sack with Mauldin. "I ve been with him for three years now. I m used to him doing it." "Immediately your mind-set changes," Quigley said of finding out he would have to fill in. "It s something that we ve prepared for. [Special teams] coach [Bobby] April s done a good job of keeping us ready. If Folk goes down, I go in. If I go down, Folk goes in." Folk held for Quigley as they reversed roles on this day. "I just couldn t get any power into it," Folk said. "I couldn t finish my [leg] swing." The PATs are longer this year with the NFL rule change, being the equivalent of a 33-yard field goal. Quigley s third one bounced off the left upright, but went through. Mangold exits early Center Nick Mangold left in the second quarter and didn t return. He s still feeling the effects of a neck injury suffered Oct. 25 that kept him out of last week s game at Oakland. He again was replaced by backup Wesley Johnson. "It just didn t respond well, which is unfortunate," said Mangold, who wouldn t rule himself out of Thursday s game despite the quick turnaround. He added he will "keep treating it, keep trying to get better. [The neck] just didn t do what I wanted it to do [Sunday]. It s disappointing not being out there with the guys." The Jets already were missing right guard Willie Colon, who sat out because of chronic knee pain and was replaced by Brian Winters. Colon also missed the Jets win over Miami on Oct. 4. But the Jaguars quickly unraveled with two turnovers in a span of 1:39. The Jets took advantage and scored a clinching touchdown on Ryan Fitzpatrick s 20-yard pass to Brandon Marshall. The Jets (5-3) held on for a 28-23 victory, snapping a two-game losing streak. First, Calvin Pace sacked Blake Bortles and jarred the ball loose after a holding penalty had set the Jaguars back to the Jets 20. Pace recovered the loose ball at the Jets 34. They were unable to get a first down, but Nick Marshall fumbled the Jets punt, and Kellen Davis grabbed it at the Jacksonville 25. Marshall s diving TD catch gave the Jets a 28-16 lead and allowed them to withstand a late Jacksonville comeback. The Jaguars (2-6), who have lost 13 consecutive games on the road, scored on Bortles 20-yard pass to Bryan Walters. But Marcus Williams second interception of the game with 43 seconds left finally sealed the victory. Center Nick Mangold, who has been bothered by a neck injury, exited the game in the first half and didn t return. Jacksonville scored on its first possession. A short punt by Quigley gave the Jaguars the ball at their own 44, and they moved to the Jets 22 before Lorenzo Mauldin and Williams combined to sack Blake Bortles for a 5-yard loss on third down. Jason Myers connected on a 45-yard field goal for a 3-0 lead with 8:59 left in the first quarter. The Jets answered immediately, helped by a 54-yard kickoff return by Antonio Cromartie to the New York 49. The Jets took only six plays to cover the 5 yards, scoring on Fitzpatrick s 7-yard pass to a wide-open Eric Decker. Fitzpatrick escaped the pocket and rolled right to buy some time before spotting Decker. Bortles threw an interception on Jacksonville s next series, setting up the Jets second TD. On third-and-8 from the Jaguars 29-yard-line, he threw a slant pass intended for Allen Robinson. Cornerback Darrelle Revis wasn t credited with a deflection, but his tight coverage caused the pass to bounce off Robinson and high into the air, where Williams caught it for an easy interception. The Jets converted the turnover into a seven-play, 32-yard touchdown drive. With Folk unavailable, the Jets went for it on fourth-and-3 from the 25, and Fitzpatrick threw a 10-yard completion to Decker. Ivory rushed over left tackle on third-and-goal from the 1 for the touchdown and a 14-3 lead. There was no more scoring until late in the second quarter. With 1:30 left in the first half and with all three timeouts remaining, the Jets had a first down at their own 15. They chose to run the ball all three plays, and punted to Jacksonville. But Quigley s short kick went only to the 50, giving the Jaguars 26 seconds to work with. Bortles made them count, completing two passes to Allen Hurns. The first was a 20-yarder, and the second was a 30-yard touchdown. Hurns beat struggling cornerback Cromartie with a double move on the play, catching the pass while motoring down the right sideline. The Jets led 14-10 at halftime. After Myers 39-yard field goal cut the Jets lead to 14-13 in the third quarter, the Jets answered with an eight-play, 73-yard drive keyed by Fitzpatrick s 44-yard pass to tight end Jeff Cumberland and his 16-yard screen pass to Ivory, the latter play which went to the Jacksonville 1. Ivory squirmed for a 1-yard TD run two plays later, barely extending the ball over the goal line. Cromartie left the game in the second half with a thigh injury. After losing their last two games, the Jets occupied a realm somewhere in between, and they recognized it. Even after defeating the Jacksonville Jaguars, 28-23, the Jets continue to inhabit a murky area. Their 5-3 record (and their coming schedule) suggests they will compete for a playoff berth, even if their performance indicates a team still striving to sort itself out. They offset some defensive lapses and what could have been a costly fumble in the final minutes Brandon Marshall recovered it with smart quarterback play by Ryan Fitzpatrick, who, playing with a padded glove to protect the torn ligament in the left (nonthrowing) hand, completed 21 of 34 passes for 272 yards and two touchdowns. The Jets sacked Jaguars quarterback Blake Bortles six times, none more important than Calvin Pace s strip and subsequent fumble recovery that stalled a promising drive in the fourth quarter. Trailing by 21-16, Jacksonville reached as far as the Jets 10-yard line on a 44-yard run by T.J. Yeldon. A penalty pushed the Jaguars back before Pace looped around Bortles and sacked him from behind, dislodging the ball that eventually he landed on. The Jets went three-and-out, but after Kellen Davis recovered Nick Marshall s muffed punt, Ryan Fitzpatrick connected with Brandon Marshall on a diving 20-yard touchdown that restored their lead to 28-16. The victory played out in tribute to a man sitting on the Jaguars side of the press box. In two years as the Jets general manager, that man, John Idzik, now a Jacksonville executive, presided over front-office dysfunction and assembled a team that was summarily dismantled this off-season by his successor. Several of Idzik s acquisitions are long gone from the Jets or toil as reserves, but three propelled them on Sunday. His first (and only) major free-agent signing, Eric Decker, amassed 79 receiving yards on six catches, including a 7-yard touchdown that erased an early 3-0 deficit. His first (and only) draft-day trade netted Chris Ivory, whose struggles away from the red zone were offset by two 1-yard touchdowns. His sharp addition to the practice squad last September, cornerback Marcus Williams, had two of the Jets three takeaways, interceptions in the first and fourth quarters. The Jets were booed off the field at halftime, booed despite leading by 14-10 because of a 1-minute 16- second sequence that featured curious clock management on offense, a woeful punt and dreadful coverage by Antonio Cromartie. With all three timeouts and the ball at the Jacksonville 15, the Jets opted to run the ball on three straight plays, gaining 4 yards. A short punt gave the Jaguars the ball at midfield, and two completions in 12 seconds from Bortles to Allen Hurns, the second a 30-yarder off a double-move, drew the Jaguars to within 4 points. It was the second consecutive week that Cromartie got roasted down the sideline for a touchdown, and a play that typified the Jets defensive struggles these last few weeks. In road losses to New England and Oakland, they allowed 688 passing yards and six touchdowns without recording a takeaway. The gloom in Oakland produced a week of introspection. The Jets reviewed the film an exercise David Harris called disgusting, containing an effort that Muhammad Wilkerson described as loafing and resolved not to repeat it. Coach Todd Bowles instituted a padded practice Wednesday, the team s first in nearly three weeks, to inculcate that forgotten skill of tackling. They missed more than 20 against the Raiders but took far better angles on Sunday. Their performance resembled Ryan Quigley's four extra points -- low and ugly, but successful. It was a struggle, but the Jets (5-3) snapped a two-game losing streak, setting the stage for Rex Bowl I. Their former coach comes to town Thursday night with the Buffalo Bills for a game that may set a record for short-week hype. This much is certain: The Jets won't be overconfident, not after their 60-minute struggle with the inferior Jaguars (2-6). If it had been any other opponent, the Jets probably would have lost. Ryan Fitzpatrick, he of the ailing left thumb, did just enough to win. He threw for two touchdowns and committed no turnovers, surviving without a running game. The defense, coming off its worst performance of the season, did just enough to win. Except for the pass rush, not much worked for the Jets, but they demonstrated their mental toughness. No one exemplified that more than Quigley, the punter-turned-emergency kicker. Replacing the injured Nick Folk, who came up lame in the pregame warm-ups, Quigley was 4-for-4 on extra points -- the first PATs of his career. Advice to Todd Bowles: Burn the tapes and start focusing on the Bills. What were they thinking? Bowles was guilty of poor clock management at the end of the first half, and it cost the Jets a touchdown. With three timeouts and 1:30 on the clock, they ran on three straight plays, an unusually conservative strategy for the aggressive Bowles. Naturally, they went three-and-out. A bad punt, followed by horrible pass coverage by Antonio Cromartie, resulted in a 12-second touchdown drive by the Jaguars. Cromartie got faked on a double move and showed no catch-up speed, getting torched by Allen Hurns for a 30-yard touchdown. It's official: Cromartie's slump is real, not just a one-game hiccup.
