Player Skills Clinics First two weeks of the season are dedicated to skills clinics Promotes learning or reinforcing of key volleyball skills such as serving, passing, setting and hitting. Gives everyone a solid foundation Local volleyball clubs are helping out with Mojo Elite VBC running most SignUpGenius used to reserve spots Coaches should plan to attend as many clinics as possible (especially with child) Need lots of helping hands Great way to pickup coaching techniques McLean Youth Volleyball 2018 8

Head Coach Responsibilities 1. Encourage and inspire 2. Communicate and work with your parents Utilize parent volunteers as necessary 3. Address any special player/parent needs Bring in Chuck if needed 4. Create practice plans 5. Instruct players during practices and matches 6. Setup and takedown nets 7. Defer to referees in matches 8. Focus on fundamental ball control skills: serve, pass, set, hit and *movement* Practices should reinforce these skills Use drills that encourage as many touches as possible Simulate game play over the net Winning is always nice, but ping pong volleyball is not a way to master playing skills 9. Uniforms Quick-dry shirts of all players (no more tie-dye) and coaches/referees (no more polos) Team colors are based on the shirt colors The orders will be for the exact shirt sizes entered on players registrations forms With some extras just in case If everything works out shirts will be delivered to your team practices the week of 4/2 or at your first match on Saturday 4/7 McLean Youth Volleyball 2018 11

Service Rules Select, Travel and 9 th -12 th House Standard USA Volleyball rules 9/12: Limit of 5 consecutive service wins Special 4 th -8 th House Rules Service Redo if first serve missed Only on first attempt in the rotation No foot faults Maximum of 3 consecutive service wins per server After 3 points with one server, the service switches to other team without a point ES players serve 5 in from the end line or 10 in for the first half of season McLean Youth Volleyball 2018 14
Scoring Rules Matches are 3 games Play all 3 games, NOT best of 3 Start score at 0 to 0, first two end at 25 points (win by 2) and last at 15 points (win by 2) Matches must end on time winner of 3 rd game could be team with most points on the hour MS Select matches are 5 games (last 15) For 4 th -8 th House, an extra point is awarded for 3 touches that result in an immediate win: Discretion of the referee For 4 th /5 th /6 th league: any 3 touches For 7 th /8 th leagues: first 2 touches can be bumps or sets; last touch must be overhead hit Extra point only awarded if opposing team does not legally return the ball into play McLean Youth Volleyball 2018 15

Match Sequencing 1. Warm-ups for 10 minutes Coaches coordinate hitting and serving times 2. Referee calls for team captains Flip coin to determine first server and side 3. Teams shake hands under the net before match begins 4. Two (2) minutes between games 5. Timeouts permitted Two 30-second timeouts per team per game 6. 3-In-A-Row Froyo Challenge Fun competition in each league on the last day of regular season Saturday May 18 The team that records the most 3-touch extra points during the match wins a gift certificate for frozen yogurt at Zinga in Falls Church. Volunteer Building Director All MYV Head & Assistant Coaches must certify as a Volunteer Building Director (VBD) Required by Fairfax County Neighborhood and Community Services (NCS) for MYA to use FCPS gyms Review materials on the NCS VBD website and take the short on-line test 15-20 minutes to certify Retake test as often as needed Forward confirmation email to mcleavb@gmail.com Related Safety Considerations NCS Inspectors DO visit gyms No water bottles allowed on playing floor injury hazard Remove any other potential hazards from the playing area Encourage players to wear knee pads and court shoes (discourage running shoes) Do not leave the gym/school area until all your players have been picked up McLean Youth Volleyball 2018 23
Concussions Awareness Concussions have become an increasingly common ailment in youth sports and volleyball is no different. The Commonwealth of Virginia recently passed legislation requiring youth leagues that use public school to make coaches, parents and players aware of how to identify and manage concussions. To get ahead of this requirement, all MYV head coaches and assistant coaches must show proof of a concussion education certification.
