Artie and friends were enjoying a game of ping-pong at BHF headquarters when a message alert came up on Artie s screen. Here we go! said Brooke, We ve got an emergency coming in. 4 5
This is from a dance teacher said Artie. She s got a big problem. Every year she trains a group of children to dance at carnival. Don t forget your trainers said Aarjun. But they never win. Everyone loves another group called The Candy Kids. We need to go and help! I ve got a feeling we re going to be doing some dancing! 6 7
Thank goodness you re here! said the dance teacher. Carnival is only a few days away and we don t even know what to go as. Help us beat The Candy Kids they dress up as cake and biscuits every year. I ve got an idea said Connor. Let s go outside. There s a street market and I think it will help me explain. It s not fair said one of the dancers. They re not even good at dancing. They re lazy! But they give out free sweets so that everyone will say they re the best. 8 9
It s sneaky to use cake, biscuits and sweets to win said Connor. Everyone loves them, but if you eat too many it s not healthy. It s better to snack on fruit and vegetables. Okay said the dance teacher. She bought an enormous bag of carrots and some fruit from the market. Let s think of a plan. If we re healthy maybe we can win carnival this year. 10 11
Artie and his friends made a plan with the dancers. Brooke would come up with a great dance routine and they would eat healthy snacks while they practiced. I ve got it! said Artie. The 5 a Days! They can dress up as 5 different fruit and veg snacks! Now we know what the dancers need to eat, but what should they dress up as? asked Rochelle. That s a great idea said Aarjun. We ll start work on the dance routines, you guys get to work on the costumes! 12 13
Everyone looked amazing in their fruit and veg costumes. Carnival day was hot and sunny. Rochelle reminded everyone to wear sun block and drink enough water. We re really going to show The Candy Kids what high energy dancing is all about! 14 15
Heck said Brooke, how can The 5 a Days ever beat that? Oh no, The Candy Kids are before us! said Aarjun. They re not dancing very well but they have a bucket full of sweets and they re giving them to the crowds. Because we dance better! said Rochelle jumping in the air. 16 17
Ready steady go! shouted Artie to the dancers. The strawberries started, then the bananas and then all the others joined in. Their dancing was amazing. I m so proud said the teacher, they ve never been this good before! 18 19
The crowd couldn t take their eyes off The 5 a Days. They ignored The Candy Kids, and their sweets. Some of them even joined in the dancing! 20 21
By the time The 5 a Days got to the judges, the crowd were going wild. The judges looked at The Candy Kids sitting around chewing sweets and then at The 5 a Days dancing with more energy than anyone had ever seen. Well it s pretty clear who the winners are! said the judges. Congratulations to The 5 a Days! 22 23
You saved the day said the dance teacher to Artie and his friends. Thank you! You helped us win! Hurray! said Artie, Just don t forget to eat at least 5 portions of fruit and veg every day, even when you re not dancing! 24 25
A message from Artie and friends Your heart is a very important part of your body. To keep your heart healthy you need to do at least 60 minutes of activity and eat at least 5 portions of fruit and veg a day. Make sure you drink enough too. Water is very good for you and you need to drink more when you re being active. You don t have to do all your activity at once. You can do a few minutes here and there just add it all up and make sure it comes to at least 60 minutes a day. Eating well also helps to keep your heart healthy. Try not to eat too many sugary and fatty foods and make sure you eat at least 5 portions of fruit and veg a day. A portion is about the size of the palm of your hand. 5 fun things 1 2 Do funny dances with your friends. What would an apple dance look like? How about a cherry? Count how many portions of fruit and veg you eat in a day. Did you eat 5 or more today? 3 Make a wall chart for your whole family so they can all make sure they eat 5 a day. Anything that makes you feel all warm and a bit out of breath counts as physical activity and is good for your heart. You can run, play games, ride your bike or do ball sports like football or catch. 4 Arrange your own carnival with your friends. Dress up, give your group a name and get dancing! 5 Ask your family to take you to a market. Buy a fruit or vegetable that you ve never tried before. 26 27
