Orientation Checklist for Evening Star Updated: 09-29-2016 This is a brief description of Evening Star systems, including on-board location of equipment, and specific procedures for engine operation. Please refer to this checklist prior to departing from the dock. General Accept risks only in a reasonable way. If you can, try to do the boat some good. Please report any damage, deficiencies or improvements to Bruce Levy (443 570-5550) or Rick Lee (301385-7906) Ensure that the fuel level does not fall below ½ tank. Apply any previous donations for fueling. If refueling is not possible, leave a donation for the next re-fueling (in ship s log book). Always pump out the holding bladder after your cruise so that the next guests will not begin their voyage with your waste on-board Record your voyage in the ships log book located in the Navigation Station desk. Upon returning, clean the boat and store the rescue sling; when departing, remove trash & personal belongings. For further information, manuals and USCG document are stored in the starboard settee cabinet, forward. Specifications USCG Document 934494 Hull #: 142 Year: 1988 Engine: 18 hp Yanmar diesel 2GM20F; 2 cylinder; # 08265 Displacement: 11,200 lbs. Sail Area: 515 Sq. Min- Max range is about 1 quart. Add oil if below or near the Min mark. Page 1 Last update: 9/29/2016

Check coolant Check fuel Check belt tension Other Under the inboard shelf in the aft cabin, look for the plastic overflow tank. Check coolant level in the plastic tank. The level should be above the Min line marked on tank. Do not overfill. You do not have to open the metal cap on the engine to check coolant level. Lift cushion in aft cabin to locate round cover. above fuel tank. View fuel gauge inside hole. flashlight is helpful here. Swivel cover to expose the hole Propping up the cushion with a Remove the bottom companionway step to access the front of the engine. CAUTION: REMOVAL OF STEP CREATES A TRIPPING HAZARD. REPLACE AND SECURE STEP WHEN DONE. Adjust if belt slack exceeds about ¾. Adjustment is done by moving the position of the alternator. Tools are in the tool bag. Oil pressure switch is on the right (when facing the engine, or port) side of engine, below the alternator. Oil filter is above the oil pressure switch, under the alternator and is accessible from the engine front. Engine stop switch cable is on the left when facing the engine, or starboard, side of the engine below the throttle cable. Throttle cable is above the stop switch cable connection on the left side of the engine. If necessary: Remove the aft cabin inboard shelf for access to top of the engine, then To Add Oil To Add Coolant Look for the yellow oil fill cap. Spare oil should be in a compartment under the aft berth. If plastic tank is empty, open metal fill cap and check level add coolant here if not full; replace metal cap and add coolant to plastic tank to mid-way between Min and Max marks. Run engine and re-check level. Special Conditions or Information Electrical & Instruments Shore Power (including on-board Battery Charger) cable is located below V-berth in the forward cabin. Batteries/Switches the switch is below the berth in the aft cabin. The three (3) batteries are located under the aft cabin berth. Two are connected in parallel as #1 (House) and the third is #2 (Start). Set the switch to 2 to start the engine. Otherwise, leave the Switch on Both while operating under engine power, in order to charge them. Turn the switch to 1 whenever the engine is not on. Turn it to Off when leaving the boat, but leave it On if the solar panel is connected. Auto Bilge Pump switch is at the nav. station. It is wired directly to the battery and bypasses the red battery switch and the nav station DC circuits. Unless in manual use, this switch should always be in the Auto mode. It should not be OFF in normal operation. VHF Radio works, but use is not convenient from the cockpit. Consider carrying/using a portable VHF for cockpit/emergency use. CD player has been removed. Page 2 Last update: 9/29/2016

Raymarine Chart Plotter mounts onto the helm binnacle. The mount is stored in the Cockpit lazarette (port). Power cable attaches to binnacle connector. Power for the Plotter is controlled by the Electrical Panel switch marked Instruments. Depth Sounder is not reliable at this time. Knotmeter sending unit is under the forward bilge cover. Check the impeller if you desire the instrument to read properly. Replace the sending unit with the dummy while cleaning the impeller to prevent flooding of the vessel. IMPORTANT: THE BOAT CAN SINK IF THE SENDING UNIT OR THE DUMMY IS NOT INSTALLED CORRECTLY. Preferred is to use the Chart/Plotter or your personal GPS. Special Conditions or Information Sailing Make sure the head sink drain valve is closed while sailing. Headsail Furling is available for the Genoa. To prevent the Furling Line from jamming in the furling drum, be sure to keep a bit of tension on the line as it is taken up in the drum during sail deployment. Observe that the line wraps evenly onto the full height of the furling drum. Reefing (two settings) is available on the mainsail. Reefing is completely performed from the cockpit, using either of the two reefing lines marked on the cabintop line clutches. Tighten the topping lift, then lower the halyard while pulling in the selected reefing line until the reef clew is tight to the boom (the reef tack should lower automatically), lock the reefing line clutch and raise the halyard to tighten the sail. Loosen the topping lift. Shaking out the reef is the reverse of this process. The Topping Lift line cleats to the port side of the boom. The Outhaul line cleats to the underside of the boom. The Boom Vang line runs to the cockpit through a marked line clutch. The Traveler control lines are on the cabintop on each side of the traveler bar. Special Conditions or Information Galley Stove (TASCO Model 555LP) NOTE: Most boats are lost by fire. Be extra careful when using the galley stove. The Stove is fueled by propane from a tank located in the aft-most cockpit lazarette on the port side next to the helmsman s seat. The tank is pressurized, but has a manual valve at the top of the tank. There is a second (red) valve in the line near the tank. THE PROPANE TANK VALVES ARE ALWAYS TURNED ON AND OFF FIRST. TURN STOVE ON: Open both the tank valve and the red valve in the storage lazarette. Then, switch on the electrical switch marked propane at the nav station. Last, with lighter ready, turn on the stove knob for the burner and light it. The lighter is in the top galley drawer. TURN STOVE OFF: Before you turn the burner off, have someone in the cockpit turn both valves in the storage lazarette OFF. Wait until the flame goes out, to empty the system, then turn off the burner and the nav. station propane switch. Please keep the tank valves closed and the propane switch off except when the stove is in use. Special Conditions or Information Other Bimini can be deployed by zippering to the rear edge of the dodger and tying the aft end (with the pole inside) to the split backstay with the cords attached.. Hot Water is provided (to the Galley and Head sink faucets) via a heat exchanger. The engine Page 3 Last update: 9/29/2016

must be running to provide a reliable supply of heated fresh water. Manuals are in the starboard settee cabinet, forward. Prop Walk is to PORT with engine in reverse. Be careful when closing Port Lights. They are getting new gaskets and need only to be tightened finger tight only. Over-tightening WILL break them. Be especially careful with the main cabin port light (starboard side over galley). It has been broken once already.
