PULLING A SWIFT ONE Official Matamata AFC match day programme Matamata Swifts v Otumoetai WaiBOP Federation League Division 1 Saturday July 19, 2014 Matamata Domain, Matamata Kick-off 2.45pm

They were my pick from the outset, so that makes me a happy lad. Now the World Cup is done and dusted we can get back to concentrating on local football for the remainder of the season. Our last home game vs Ngongotahah saw us get a 2-1 victory in a very hard fought clash. We went into the game with a plan in mind and the boys stuck to the task and put in a great performance against a very physical side. Last week we travelled to a rain sodden Links Ave to play Tauranga. I honestly belive it was our best performance of the season. On a day when conditions could have got the better of players, we stepped up. Michael and Dwayne were superb at the back, Bjorn Vossen crawled off his sick bed to dominate the midfi eld, while for the second week in a row Peter put in some great tackles and showed his full passing range. But football is a team game and it took the full 13 players to get 3 points away on a miserable day. I said from the start of the season if we play like a team, and play a full 90 minutes we are capable of taking points off any side in the league. The last few weeks has been the turning point, so now we need more of the same please. This week we welcome Otumoetai to the Domain. After suffering a heavy defeat to them earlier in the season we should have no problem getting a motivated side out on the pitch. Otumoetai have proved they can beat good sides on the road and I know they will come here with confi dence. For us, today is about continuing our improvement, working for the full 90 minutes again and continuing to show what this Matamata side is capable of. I d also like to wish the Swifts Ladies the best of luck for their match against Melville tomorrow. Jono and Gemma have done a great job with the side and a win tomorrow will see the Ladies wrap up the title. They deserve to after a superb season. Lastly congratulations to Sam Masterton who was away last week as he captained WaiBOP to victory in the national U19 Futsul Championships.
