ARKANSAS Following last week's 17-12 Southeastern Conference Western Divison win over nationally No. 21- ranked Alabama, Mississippi State takes to the road for the final time in the 2007 regular season when the Bulldogs travel to Little Rock, Ark., Saturday, Nov. 17, for an SEC West game against the Arkansas Razorbacks. The game will kick off at 1 p.m. CT and will not be televised. BULLDOGS ACHIEVE BOWL ELIGIBILITY FOR FIRST TIME SINCE 2000 Mississippi State won its sixth game of the 2007 season this past weekend against Alabama, qualifying the school for post-season bowl consideration for the first time in seven years. MSU has now beaten two teams ranked in the nation's top 25 when it played them (in back-to-back weeks), and won three road games in the same season overall, for the first time since 2000. State has not won four true road games in the same season since 1986 and has not won four league games since 2000. MISSISSIPPI STATE SEEKS FIRST-EVER VICTORY IN THE STATE OF ARKANSAS Mississippi State is 0-6-1 all-time in the state of Arkansas, having lost three times to Arkansas in Fayetteville and three times to the Razorbacks in Little Rock. The Bulldogs' 1993 team tied Arkansas 13-13 in the Natural State's capital city. TELEVISION LIGHTS MISSING FROM MSU FOOTBALL FOR JUST THE FOURTH TIME Mississippi State's game vs. Arkansas in Little Rock this Saturday will be just the fourth, and last, time this year that the Bulldogs will be missing from a live network telecast. MSU is 2-1 in such previous contests, wins against Gardner-Webb and UAB, and a loss to Tennessee. MSTATE OFFENSIVE LINE COACH GRIMES RETURNS TO HOME STATE Mississippi State offensive line coach J.B. Grimes, a native of Clarendon, Ark., and graduate Henderson (Ark.) State in 1977, has worked eight years in the state of Arkansas. In addition to two stints at the University of Arkansas GRIMES SERVED AS AN ASSISTANT WITH CURRENT RAZORBACK HEAD MAN NUTT Mississippi State offensive line coach J.B. Grimes worked as offensive line coach for the Razorbacks under three head coaches from 1989-92. During those final three years, present UA head coach Houston Nutt was the Razorback wide receivers coach. MSU RUNNING BACK COACH FELKER VISITS HIS FORMER EMPLOYER AS WELL Mississippi State running back coach Rockey Felker spent four seasons at the University of Arkansas (1993-96), including the final three as offensive coordinator of the Razorbacks. He helped UA win the Southeastern Conference Western Division title and earn a berth in the SEC Championship Game in 1995. TEAMS' DEFENSIVE COORDINATORS WORKED TOGETHER AT CLEMSON Mississippi State defensive coordinator Ellis Johnson and Arkansas defensive boss Reggie Herring were on the same coaching staff at Clemson (1994-96). In fact, Herring coached the linebackers that '96 season under Johnson, who had been elevated to Tiger defensive coordinator. Additionally, MSU safeties coach Charlie Harbison worked with the Clemson defensive backs at that time. MSTATE WIDE RECEIVERS COACH HAS TIES TO TWO UA STAFF MEMBERS First-year Mississippi State wide receivers coach Pat Washington coached with one Arkansas assistant coach and played collegiately with another. Washington's first job after starring as the quarterback at Auburn was to serve his alma mater as a graduate assistant. Arkansas MISSISSIPPI STATE ATHLETIC MEDIA RELATIONS P.O. TWO TRUE FRESHMAN BULLDOGS HAIL FROM THE STATE OF ARKANSAS Mississippi State head football coach Sylvester Croom signed two players this past February from Arkansas, the only players on the roster from that state. Fullback Ethan Stockett (Fort Smith) and linebacker Jamie Jones (Springdale) grew up in Arkansas. There are no UA players with ties to the state of Mississippi. SOME ASSOCIATIONS BETWEEN THE TWO SCHOOLS' PLAYERS EXIST MSU true freshman linebacker Jamie Jones played with Arkansas tight end Ben Cleveland, UA place-kicker Alex Tejeda and Razorback flanker Andrew Norman at Springdale. State's Ethan Stockett and Arkansas punter/place-kicker Jeremy Davis and cornerback Sean Penix each attended Southside High School in Fort Smith. State defensive back Keith Fitzhugh and UA defensive tackle Patrick Jones both hail from Hampton, Ga., and were separated by two years at Lovejoy High School. MSTATE OFFENSE CONTINUES TO CONVERT, MAINTAIN BALL CONTROL Mississippi State made seven-of-16 third-down conversion attempts against Alabama this past Saturday, and has now converted third down opportunities at a 41.3 percent rate (seventh in the SEC). The Bulldogs also held onto the football for 30:31 in the win over the Crimson Tide, an edge that now has the team ranking fourth in the league in time of possession average (31:03 average per game). By comparison, the Bulldogs converted 36 percent of its third-down opportunities a year ago, and averaged only 29:26 of possession time. State held the ball for 9:11 in the first quarter against Alabama and 9:28 in the fourth. MSU's 11-play, 52-yard drive to a field goal in the second quarter was its 12th scoring possession of 10 plays or more this season. In contrast, MSU had only four scoring drives of 10 or more plays. MISSISSIPPI STATE DEFENSE IMPRESSIVE AGAINST THE CRIMSON TIDE PASS Just one week after holding Kentucky to 89 yards rushing on 27 attempts at Lexington two weeks ago, Mississippi State permitted Alabama just 121 yards through the air this past Saturday and intercepted the Crimson Tide twice. That showing has helped MSU rank third in the SEC in pass defense (184.8 yards per game), fourth in pass efficiency defense (109.7) and fifth in the league in total defense (334.6). The Bulldogs moved their turnover margin to plus- 2 for the season (plus-.20 average), good for a fifth-place tie in league statistics. MSU was minus-5 (minus-.417) last season. BULLDOGS RETURN ANOTHER THEFT FOR SCORE AGAINST CRIMSON TIDE Mississippi State sophomore cornerback Anthony Johnson (Jackson, Miss.) returned an Alabama pass interception 100 yards for a touchdown this past Saturday, the fifth time this season the Bulldog defense has posted six points while the opponent was on offense. The five returns for score this season are the second-most ever by a Bulldog defense (school record: 6, 1994). The 100-yard return for TD broke a record that had stood at State for 69 years (97 yards; Jack Nix, 1938). TITUS BROWN REMAINS AMONG SEC SACK, TACKLE FOR LOSS LEADERS Mississippi State senior defensive end Titus Brown (Tuscaloosa, Ala.) has recorded 35.5 tackles for loss (minus 169 yards), 18.5 of which were quarterback sacks (minus 114 yards) his career, and with a TFL/QBS in the win over Alabama, stayed among the Southeastern Conference leaders in both hit-behind-the-line categories this year. Brown, who has recorded at least one tackle for loss in nine of the season's first 10 games, is sixth in the league with 1.20 TFL per game. His 0.80 sack-per-game average is third best in the SEC. His 18.5 sacks are good for seventh place all-time at Mississippi State in that category. Greg Favors (19.5; 1994-97) is next on the school list. Brown has now had at least one TFL in 15 of the last 17 games, dating to last season, and a QB sack in 12 of the last 17. DEREK PEGUES GETS EIGHTH CAREER INTERCEPTION AGAINST ALABAMA Mississippi State junior defensive back Derek Pegues (Batesville, Miss.) registered his third pass interception this season, the eighth of his career in the Bulldogs' win over Alabama. He has returned three of those eight picks for touchdown, the most in school history. He is just one theft away from breaking into the school's all-time top 10 in that category (9; Bill Kiser, 1965-67, Emile Petro and Ken Phares, 1970-72). PEGUES RETURNS TO THE RETURN GAME, MOVES UP STATE'S ALL-TIME CHARTS Derek Pegues ranks second on the school's all-time kick return (73) and yardage (1,604) lists, trailing only Tony James (1989-92; 78-1,862) in both categories. He also passed Tom "Shorty" McWilliams and ranks third on the all-time punt returns list (56), tied with Bernard Euell (56, 1992-95), and sixth on the all-time yardage ranking (532). Pegues trails Billy Stacy (580) on that chart. CENTER BLACKLEDGE HAS POSSIBLY HIS TOP ALL-AROUND GAME AT UK Mississippi State senior center Royce Blackledge (Sandersville, Miss.) has now started 28 consecutive games for the Bulldogs, including 22 in a row at center. He has been on the field for every offensive snap 17 times. He has recorded an 84 percent blocking average thus far in the 2007 season, leading the offensive linemen in blocking grades five times in the season's first 10 weeks. Against Alabama, he was on the field for all 66 offensive snaps and posted an 82 percent blocking grade, leading the way with 11 knockdown blocks. DIXON RUSHES UP TD LIST, ON VERGE OF ENTERING RECORD BOOK ELSEWHERE Mississippi State sophomore halfback Anthony Dixon (Jackson, Miss.) has now rushed 404 times in his career for 1,582 yards and 22 touchdowns. He needs 13 carries to reach the school's all-time top 10 in that category (417; Dontae Walker, 1999-2002). His rushing total against Alabama (26 carries, 84 yards, one touchdown) moved his career yardage to 16th on the school's all-time list, surpassing Hoyle Granger (1,534; 1963-65), Blondy Black (1,577; 1940-42) and Lewis Grubbs (1,580; 1970-72). And his 22 rushing touchdowns have moved him into a fifthplace tie on the school's all-time list with Dontae Walker (22, 1999-2002). Dixon passed Don Smith (21; 1983-86) on that chart. DEFENSIVE BACK FITZHUGH GETS FIRST CAREER DOUBLE-FIGURE TACKLE GAME Junior safety Keith Fitzhugh (Hampton, Ga.) had 10 tackles in the team's win over Alabama, his first career double-digit tackle outing. He was also credited with one forced fumble against the Crimson Tide. Fitzhugh's previous season high was eight hits at West Virginia and his previous career best was nine stops at LSU in 2006. O'QUINN, DOUGLAS JOIN FITZHUGH WITH SOLID PERFORMANCES VS. UA Junior cornerback Jasper O'Quinn (Bude, Miss.) and classmate linebacker Dominic Douglas (Clinton, Miss.) supported Fitzhugh with outstanding performances of their own against Alabama. O'Quinn posted a career high nine takles against the Crimson Tide and helped hold Alabama to just 121 yards passing in the team's 17-12 win. His previous best effort as a Bulldog was an eight-tackle game against Tennessee. Douglas recorded eight tackles, including two tackles for loss (minus 6 yards) against Alabama. The two hits behind the line led the club and were a season high for the junior college transfer. MSU STREAKS & 2007 RECORDS Overall Streak 2007 Overall......................... 2006 THE LAST MEETING No. 5 Arkansas 28 Mississippi State 14 November 18, 2006 Davis Wade Stadium at Scott Field Starkville, Miss. STARKVILLE, Miss. (AP) - Darren McFadden returned a kickoff 92 yards for a touchdown and Chris Houston scored on an 87-yard interception as No. 5 Arkansas beat Mississippi State 28-14 to win the Southeastern Conference Western Division title. The Bulldogs shut down McFadden and the high-powered Razorbacks offense at every turn, but defense and special teams carried Arkansas (10-1, 7-0) to the win. Mississippi State (3-8, 1-6) limited McFadden to just 84 yards, but most of the yardage came on the team's final drive. Casey Dick threw two TD passes to go with the long returns and the Razorbacks even resorted to a trick play late in the third quarter. With his team ahead 21-14 and Mississippi State hanging tough, McFadden handed off to Felix Jones on what GAME NOTES Mississippi State s 355 yards of total offense was its second highest offensive output this year. MState s 154 rushing yards are the second highest of the season as well. Anthony Dixon s 65-yard touchdown run was the longest rush of his career. But the tailback pitched the ball back to Dick, who found Marcus Monk in the corner of the end zone for a 35-yard touchdown with 2:13 remaining in the third quarter. The Razorbacks had 177 yards of offense through three quarters and McFadden and backup Jones - the nation's No. 2 rushing tandem coming into the game - had 42 yards. Even the Wildcat formation, where McFadden lines up at quarterback in the shotgun, had no claws against the Bulldogs. The Razorbacks ran the formation seven times in the game's first three quarters for 30 yards. After Houston's interception return put Arkansas up 7-0 with 2:44 left in the first quarter, Mississippi State answered with a 65-yard touchdown run three plays later by tailback Anthony Dixon to make it 7-7. McFadden's return gave Arkansas the lead, but the Bulldogs evened the score at 14-14 with a 22-yard pass from Michael Henig to Tony Burks that was set up by an interception by De'Mon Glanton. But a poor punt and a 15-yard penalty allowed Dick to find Damian Williams in the end zone for a 29-yard touchdown with 41 seconds left to give Arkansas a 21-14 halftime lead. The Bulldogs had two chances to score in the fourth quarter, but were stopped on fourth down and picked off in the end zone. THE LAST MEETING

Mississippi State 19 Auburn 14 September 15, 2007 Jordan-Hare Stadium Auburn, Ala. 2007 GAME RECAPS Gardner-Webb 15 Mississippi State 31 September 22, 2007 Davis Wade Stadium at Scott Field Starkville, Miss. AUBURN, Ala. - An interception that led to a mid-fourth-quarter drive by Mississippi State proved to be the difference in the Bulldogs' 19-14 upset win at Auburn Saturday afternoon on the Plains. After Blake McAdams' 73-yard punt had pinned Auburn deep in its own territory, Demario Bobo's first career interception of a tipped Tiger pass at the AU 44-yard line would set up an MSU drive that was the only scoring play of the second half. State drove the 44 yards on 10 plays and finished it with a 5-yard Christian Ducre rush with 5:29 to go in regulation. The two-point conversion failed. Ducre had an 18-yard rush earlier on the drive on a third-and-12 draw play from the Auburn 25. Neither team had mounted much momentum in the second half of action before the MSU score, trading short drives back and forth throughout. The only other possessions of significance in the half were Auburn's first and last of the half. AU took the ball to open the third quarter and went 60 yards to the MSU 16 before fumbling the ball away. On its last attempt of the game, to try and answer MSU's score, Auburn starting quarterback Brandon Cox returned to the field after being benched early on in favor of backup Kodi Burns. Cox quickly moved Auburn down the field 67 yards on 12 plays - to the Bulldog 9 - before State's defense stood GAME NOTES The Bulldogs have won their last three games in the State of Alabama (at both UAB and Alabama in 2006). State ended a six-game slide against Auburn with today s win. Derek Pegues INT return was his third career pick-six, setting a new school record. Blake McAdams boomed a 73-yard punt in the fourth quarter. It was the longest of his career, and the longest by a Bulldog punter since Jeff Walker hit a 79-yarder at Alabama in 1999. Carlson's extra point made the State lead 10-0 just 6:24 into the contest. After the teams went scoreless the remainder of the first quarter, the Bulldogs added to their lead early in the second period with a Carlson 30-yarder, the result of an AU fumble forced by an 11-yard sack from State's De'Mon Glanton. But Auburn would get things cranked up late in the half under the direction of the option-style, signal-caller Burns, scoring twice in the final 4:18. He led the Tigers on a 5-play, 54-yard drive - capped by a 28-yard rumble by Ben Tate. State then handed AU a golden opportunity when Pegues fumbled the ensuing kickoff at the MSU 30. Mississippi State 21 No. 16 South Carolina 38 September 29, 2007 Williams-Brice Stadium Columbia, S.C. 2007 GAME RECAPS UAB 13 Mississippi State 30 October 6, 2007 Davis Wade Stadium at Scott Field Starkville, Miss. COLUMBIA, S.C. - Mississippi State's upset bid at 16th-ranked South Carolina fell short as the Gamecocks used a blocked punt to change momentum and pull away for a 38-21 victory. It marked the fifth win in a row for USC (4-1, 2-1 Southeastern Conference) in the series with MSU (3-2, 1-2) and broke a three-game State win streak. With South Carolina leading 17-14 at halftime, neither team mounted much of a drive on their first tries of the second half. But State, on its second possession of the third quarter, would take the lead on a solid scoring drive of five plays - all rushes by Christian Ducré and Anthony Dixon. Dixon finished off the march with a 2-yard score and MSU led 21-17 at the 8:56 mark of the third. The Bulldog defense forced a 50-yard field goal attempt by Ryan Succop on the next possession. But as quickly as State seemed to have gained a bit of momentum, it would lose it just as fast. After the Gamecocks stopped MSU on five plays, Eric Norwood broke through the line and blocked Blake McAdams' punt, which Carolina recovered on the MSU 27. On the very next play, Gamecock quarterback Chris Smelley hit receiver Kenny McKinley near the goal line and McKinley then darted into the end zone to put the home squad back on top 24-21. The longest drive State would muster following that scenario was 32 yards. Meanwhile, USC tacked on two more touchdowns, both GAME NOTES With a Derek Pegues interception, State intercepted a pass in the opening period in each of the last four games. Mississippi State s 14-play, seven minute touchdown drive in the second quarter was its longest scoring drive this season. Junior quarterback Josh Riddell and junior wide receiver Co-Eric Riley each earned his first career start. McKinley was also stellar on the receiving end, hauling in four catches for 107 yards and two touchdowns. Smelley was solid in his new starting role for USC, completing 19-of-37 aerials for 279 yards, two touchdowns and one interception. In a penalty-plagued first half (15 called between the two teams), South Carolina got on the board first in the game taking the opening drive 12 plays and capping it with a 3-yard touchdown run by Davis. After the teams traded possessions and McAdams pinned the Gamecocks at their own 3-yard line, MSU capitalized by stopping USC on three downs and forcing an errant punt that gave the Bulldogs the ball on the USC 31. Two plays later, Riddell found Aubrey Bell for a 28- yard touchdown pass. South Carolina got good field position for its next score, a punt return leaving the ball at the MSU 37. The fourth play of the drive saw Smelley find McKinley for a 20-yard touchdown. But the Bulldogs would answer again on its last drive of the first half, taking the ball 62 yards on 14 plays, highlighted by solid running from Ducré and Dixon - Dixon scoring from a yard out. South Carolina used the remaining 2:20 of the half to take a small lead into the locker room. After gaining 54 yards on 10 quick plays, Succop nailed a 45-yard field goal for a 17-14 USC advantage. STARKVILLE, Miss. - Mississippi State (4-2) scored three fourth-quarter touchdowns, including two in a late 15-second span, to hold off a pesky UAB team (1-4) for a 30-13 victory Saturday afternoon at Davis Wade Stadium at Scott Field. MSU is 4-2 for the first time since the 2000 season. State trailed 10-3 at halftime and 13-9 after three quarters of play before putting together an impressive 11-play, 80-yard drive early in the fourth period that lasted seven minutes. The possession ended in a 10-yard Anthony Dixon touchdown run to put State up 16-13. The Bulldogs would then shut down UAB's offense the remainder of the day, while producing two more scores of their own. After forcing a punt, State drove 60 yards for another score, capped by a 12-yard Dixon run. On the Blazers' next drive, State's Anthony Johnson picked off Sam Hunt's pass on the first play and returned it 30 yards for a score. Dixon led MSU's offensive performance on GAME NOTES Junior linebackers Dominic Douglas and Jamar Chaney posted double digit tackles against UAB to become the first Bulldogs to accomplish the feat since Titus Brown (11) and Darren Williams (10) against Mississippi on Nov. 27, 2004. Neither team scored in the first quarter, but the Blazers broke the ice within the first minute of the second period with a 42-yard field goal from Swayze Waters, capping a 30-yard drive that was setup by an interception of MSU's Mike Henig. Wesley Carroll received the start for State, but Henig played for the majority of the first half, playing for the first time since breaking his hand Sept. 15 at Auburn. He was 2-for-8 on the day for 26 yards and two interceptions. He did not play in the second half. On the next Blazer drive, Bulldog Kyle Love blocked another Waters field goal attempt. UAB answered that with its best drive of the afternoon, a 13-play, 87-yard march that was topped off with a 31-yard Hunt pass to Frantrell Forrest. That gave the Blazers their 10-3 lead at the intermission. Mississippi State scored on the opening drive of the second half, a 1-yard, fourth-down touchdown run from Dixon.
