DECEMBER 14 Newsletter Page 3 P R E S I D E N T S M E S S A G E As Fall turned our surroundings to golden splendor and leaves fell from mighty trees, my husband and our Maumelle Country Club President, Colonel Kenneth H. Newton (USA retired) died November 1 at age 63. He had worked happily all day on his bee hives with brother-in-law, Alan Reams in Russellville. Upon returning home, he had decided to simply watch from afar the tail-gate party at the clubhouse. At sunset, he had a massive heart attack during halftime of the Razorback game. It s a signature theme of the Bible: God coming to the aid of his children, wrote Max Lucado in God Will Carry You Through. Recently, I experienced our Heavenly Father s care as an army from MCC and especially its women s group, MWGA, served to quiet a tsunami of emotions and meet a mountain of needs to nourish Ken s family s bellies and spirits. And the MCC Veterans Day toast, with trumpeter Stephanie Hopkins playing Taps, served as both a tribute to all Veterans and offered a resounding farewell salute to our fallen President. Thank you to all who served the family of Ken Newton, some of whom had to unexpectedly travel in from Hawaii, London, and across this great nation to fill our home. Individual kindnesses are too numerous to name here including hugs, leaf removal and lots of scrumptious comfort foods like breakfast casseroles, BBQ, roast, ham, chicken pasta, meat and cheese platter, mashed potatoes, sweet potatoes, mac-n-cheese, rolls, drinks, chocolate and key lime cakes, as well as a picnic basket of fried chicken, fixins and banana pudding (which Ken would say was all to die for ), but please know you are individually praised. A special thank you also to all who have or will contribute to the Newton Memorial Fund at MCC because it will serve all and as a lasting tribute to him for years to come. Once upon a time, I perceived our MCC membership as a luxury that allowed Ken lots of golf and me endless pathways to walk at sunrise. Now, I understand better that MCC offers me a wealth of relationships to invest in and is a component in our family s wellbeing and security. I look forward to my future on the golf course with fellow members, including Ken s sister and her husband, Kathy and Pat Chambers, who add their praise and gratitude here for members kindnesses. Ken s final moment before his Commander-and-Chief called him to Heaven was at our home, which he loved to say was a nine iron away from the 9 th green. His was a life well lived with faith, family, and fellowship on and off the golf course. Ken was honored to serve as President of the Board of Directors. And I am humbled and honored to be a member of both the MCC and its MWGA. Again, thank you to all for your kindness to me and the entire Ken Newton family. Happy Hour Wed. Newton F RO M YO U R C L U B H O U S E M A N A G E R The staff of Maumelle Country Club is looking forward to seeing everyone in the club during the Holidays. We will be busy with all of the parties that are planned but still have a few dates open if you are looking for a place to bring your office, club or family. One of the best parts of membership is the opportunity to use the facilities at little or no charge. No party is too small! I guess the end of the year is a good time to reflect on the successes and challenges we all have experienced through the year. We have tried new things to see what works... or not. We change a norm... and sometimes... change it back. Only from your feedback do we really know how our plans will turnout. Please feel free to stop in and share your thoughts and ideas. That is usually where I get the best ones anyway and I just take credit for them. I would like to thank the membership for the support I receive every day of the year as your Clubhouse Manager. In March, I will begin my fourth year and I can honestly say it has been great being here. The support I get from the membership has been amazing and very much appreciated. I like to share the feedback with the staff so they also know how things are going. In my opinion, this is the best staff I have had the pleasure of working with since I have been here. As I write this, several of our Ladies of the club are decorating the club for the season and it's beginning to look a lot like. They are also making plans for the New Years Celebration, so please take a minute to open up those emails and check out what they come up with. It promises to be a great party. Thanks again for supporting our efforts and using the club. It is very much appreciated. See you at the Club, Bill Wallace

DECEMBER 14 Newsletter Page 5 To the Members: Once a year the members have an opportunity to show their appreciation to the employees by contributing to the employees bonus fund. This has been a tradition at MCC for over 30 years through the generosity of the members. The contribution is only $30. Out of the monies received, all Club employees will receive an annual bonus based on length and quality of employment to Maumelle Country Club. All members will be billed on their November 30th, 2014 statement for this bonus. If you do not wish to contribute, please call the club office and we will deduct this charge from your account. Employees appreciate the member s contributions to the employee bonus and look forward to serving the members again in 2015. T URF TALK A reminder of our greens covering policy: We will cover when the forecast is for the air temperature to dip below 25 degrees for an extended period of time. We will uncover when the forecast is to be above freezing for a full day. Many other factors are to be considered when deciding to or not to cover the greens. Some of these are wind, moisture and time of season. Also, we will attempt to cover the greens before the weather moves into the area. It is very difficult to handle the covers when the wind is blowing at 15-20 mph, or when it is raining. Please understand that the few days each winter that the course is closed it is for the future health of our greens. Frost delays will be handled the same way as past years. We will open the course just as soon as the frost has burned off of the greens. Even though we have2505 dormant Bermuda grass greens foot traffic can still damage the plant when covered in frost. Thank you and I hope everyone has a great holiday season! A TTENTION PRIVATE C A RT OWNERS The 2015 trail fee of $895.00 plus tax will be billed on your December 31, 2014 statement. Members may elect to pay their trail fees in three equal payments. If you would like this option, please contact the club office prior to December 31, 2014 or your account will be billed the full amount. If you paid a trail fee in 2014 but do not wish to continue using your private cart in 2014, please contact the club office prior to December 31, 2014. NOTICE Holiday Closing In accordance with the rules and regulations of the Club, the clubhouse and pro shop will be closed December 24 th & 25 th, but the golfcourse will be open for play. We ask that ALL groups wait until 10:00 a.m. before teeing off. Club carts will not be available for rent on these days.no EXCEP- TIONS. If you store your cart in the cart shed, we ask that you please close and lock the cart barn door behind you. We do not want to take the chance of vandalism or theft. Merry & Happy New Year!
