COMMODORE S COMMENTS WOW! January 2013 is gone already! How quickly events have come and gone this month and, as sailors, we now move in to the most prolific time of the year for us; The Spring Sailing Season. In our club alone we will continue to have the Sunday Sailing at the Point as well as Tune Up races for our own regatta coming up in April. And for the solid racing fraternity in our club there will be regattas practically every weekend for the next several months at various lakes and venues all over central Florida. It will be a very, very busy time for all of us. To all of you Harpooners out there, you better get out there and practice. Art Twitchell sails all that he can on Leviathan and he could well be in the trophy presentations come Sunday at the Harpoon Nationals. So now we again move forward. The officers and regatta committee met in January and all is well and is moving smoothly there. Remember to register by April 6 th to get your discount! But wait a minute! Hold on there! Before we get too revved up and excited about all that is in front of us, let s reflect back for a moment about all that we just left behind. Since I was not able to produce a comment for the January edition of our newsletter I never had a chance to thank, in print and wholeheartedly, the wonderful Christmas Party that was hosted by Skip and Lou Archibald. We all had so much fun at their wonderful party and eats were repeatedly brought up in conversations among the members for weeks afterward. So Three Cheers for You Both, Skip and Lou! And Thank You! January is also the traditional month for the bonfire at Ed and Lynn Sims and, of course it was, as always, exceptionally put on. The weather got cool enough for a roaring fire and the food fit the night just perfectly. It was a great crowd that enjoyed the wonderful evening. Ed and Lynn do so much for the club all year long, generously providing us their home, beach, and docks, that it is hard to know what else to say. So simply, Thank You, Thank You. Oh, by the way, we had a little casual sailboat race (if you can call it that!) the afternoon of the bonfire and I have only one thing to say about it. We will be dining at a new restaurant in February so Jan will give you the exact name and location details for that evening. It is a new Mediterranean restaurant in Ocala off the square that Bob and Jan Cole have eaten at and given it rave reviews. Our general membership meeting will be at Steve and Gloria Jaffess this month so mark that date on the calendar. They are such gracious people. I am sure that the evening will be delightful and will not be a meeting to miss. Jan will have directions to their home also in this newsletter. Have a great February everyone. See you on the water! FROM THE VICE COMMODORE We will have four days of activities: Thursday will be the club meeting at Rock & Jan Schumacher s. Friday will be registration, practice sailing day and a gathering at Gator Joe s. The Lake Weir Invitational and Harpoon Regatta is only 11 weeks away. The regatta team has members to help with registration, chase boats, food, trophies and more. We are planning for Harpoon, MC, Open and Open displacement classes at the regatta. Shirts will be for sale at $15 each. Early registration will save you $10 and the cutoff date is April 6 th. Please register online for the regatta at www.regattaregistration.com. This is for racers and members who will be joining us for lunches & dinners. Your support will be greatly appreciated. We will need volunteers to bring deserts for the Saturday Night dinner. Please contact Patti Moring if you would like to help. Saturday will be racing and a fabulous dinner by Patti Moring s team of Jan Cole and Sandra Harton. Sunday will be the final races, trophy presentations and suitable celebrations. I want to thank the regatta team for all the work they have done so far. The team is John Hult, Ed Sims, Jan Schumacher, Art Twitchell, David & Patti Moring. It would not be possible to put on a regatta without their help and all of the other volunteers who will support us during the regatta. Please come out and participate, support, volunteer or just enjoy the event. It is your regatta after all! Wishing you good winds and great sailing. TREASURER S REPORT Time flies! It seems like it was just Happy New Year and here it is February already. We do bring in money with our membership fees and we do have entry fees for some of our races, and of course, the regatta. Other collateral earnings come from selling t-shirts & hats and having... yes...raffles. Since the timing of these expenses and incomes don't always dove tail, it is important to have about $2,000 in our account to keep our finances solvent. We do have a formal budget that the officers discussed and reviewed earlier this year which helps keep us on track. It takes some money, but it's not about the money. It is about having some good sails and some good times with good friends.!! Respectfully submitted, In January we paid our annual rental fee for our P. O. Box in Ocala. This year it was $58.00. The January 19th sailing race was a great time culminating with the Bonfire at Ed and Lynn Sims. There was a brisk wind for sailing, a good turn-out for the meeting and an enthusiastic 50/50 Raffle with a windfall of $25.00 to the lucky winner...this time, Skip Archibald...Congratulations! The matching $25.00 that the club made, rose our account balance to $2,296.59. Someone asked me, "What do we do with all that money we get from the raffle?" Which is a very good question. Many of the members may not know what the nuts and bolts of the club cost. On the surface we bring food to our dinner meetings and our generous hosts provide the main dish. So there is very little cost for the social aspects of the get-togethers with a few rare exceptions like Margataville, the Christmas Party, and Officer's Induction meeting. However, below the surface we have expenses such as, Liability Insurance, annual Florida State corporation fee, PO Box rental, office supplies, Kiwanis Club Facility rental fee, Regatta Expenses, i.e. shirt & cap merchandise, trophies and groceries, seasonal racing and service awards. These add up to a budget of $5,118 anticipated for this year.!! Art Twitchell Treasurer P.S. Congratulations to John Hult for the Gavel Award! Sunday Sailing at The Point! Meet by boat at Lemon Point on Lake Weir every 3rd Sunday of the month at 1:00 PM for an a$ernoon of sailing and fun! February 17, 2013 @ 1:00 OCALA SAILING CLUB, PO BOX 2191, OCALA, FL 34478! OSC MEETING MINUTES - BONFIRE!!!! JANUARY 19, 2013 Location: Ed and Lynn Sims Home ~ Lake Weir Meeting was called to order around the bonfire by Commodore, John Hult. John welcomed the group to the annual Bonfire and gave a big "THANKS" to our hosts, Ed and Lynn Sims. Art Twitchell presented the Treasurer's Report. The balance prior to the 50/50 Raffle this evening is $2,272.00. There was a brief discussion about how the evite's are working for our event RSVP's. The general consensus is that evite is working well for everyone. Several guests were introduced: Ellie Hancock introduced her friend and Computer Expert, David. Lynn Sims introduced her mother, Jan, and several neighbors. Jan Schumacher introduced her new neighbors, Tanya and Aarin Katzen. Art Twitchell sold 50/50 Raffle tickets. The winner this evening was Skip Archibald. Congratulations Skip! Jan Schumacher announced that the OSC Tervis Tumbler order has finally arrived. She will distribute the tumblers after the meeting. The February Buccaneer Night will be held at Feta Mediterranean Cuisine in Ocala on February 7, 2013 at 6:30 PM. The February OSC Meeting will be held at Steve and Gloria Jaffess home on Thursday, February 21, 2013 at 6:30 PM. There was a sailing event this afternoon prior to the Bonfire. Three boats sailed a self-timed race from the Sims Beach around the buoys in Sunset Harbor, past Lemon Point out into the big lake, and back to the Sims Beach in Sunset Harbor. John Hult announced the winners as follows: 1st Place: Tied for 2nd Place: Art Twitchell and Jan Schumacher Ed and Lynn Sims John Hult and Paul Straub Art and I are still scratching our heads??? Bob Cole gave an update about our upcoming Harpoon Nationals and Lake Weir Invitational Regatta on April 19-21, 2013. The NOR (Notice of Race) has been published and posted, and is ready for registration. The PRO is lined up to officiate the races, chase boats are signed up, trophies are being made, and other volunteers have offered to help with all of the many tasks involved with running a Regatta. Larry Moore will be hosting our Jamaican guests at his home once again this year. Thanks Larry! Please register for the Regatta, even if you are a non-participant for the races and are registering only for the meals. If you would like to help with the Regatta in any way, please contact Bob Cole. The OSC Meeting was adjourned and the OBRS Meeting began. Art Twitchell presented the Gavel Award to John Hult for towing his San Juan 21 all the way out to Lake Weir for one of our Fall Sunday Sailing at The Point events and never launching it! Who will be next??? The OBRS Meeting was adjourned... until the next time. Respectfully Submitted, We will be having a Spring Series of races prior to the April Regatta for practice and tune-up. Stay tuned for dates and times. Jan Schumacher ~ Secretary OCALA SAILING CLUB, PO BOX 2191, OCALA, FL 34478! PAGE 5
