Intrductin Welcme t Wallyball. My name is Steve Fuhrman. I ve been invlved with Wallyball since 1981. I will be taking yu thrugh a guided tur n hw t setup a wallyball turnament. I have successfully setup and run ver 300 turnaments. This includes turnaments at the lcal, state, reginal, and natinal levels. These turnaments have lasted frm tw (2) t six (6) days in playing time. The number f players varied frm 25 200 players. In the past I have wrked clsely with Wallyball Internatinal Inc, the American Wallyball Assciatin, and The Assciatin f United Wallyball Players. Hpefully this guide will help yu t run a successful turnament in yur area. It s nt uncmmn fr players t travel t different cities r states t cmpete in well run turnaments. The key here is well run turnaments. Unfrtunately, there are sme turnaments that aren t well run. Players need t knw what t expect when yu annunce yur Wallyball turnament. Wallyball players expect Wallyball rules. If yu have a cuple f "Huse Rules" let peple knw asap. "Huse Rules" shuld nt change hw the game f Wallyball is actually played. A successful turnament will have a variety f individuals invlved in setting up the turnament, and each persn s rle and respnsibilities must be well dcumented. In this manual yu will find a suggested structure that wrks.. If yu need help, please feel free t cntact me at Steve_Fuhrman@msn.cm Put in sme time up frnt t prperly plan yur event and yu will be repaid by seeing players return time and time again because yu have prvided them with such a great time! 2
Chapter 1 Turnament Cmmittee Teamwrk is very imprtant within the turnament cmmittee. There are a lt f tasks t be accmplished if yur turnament is t be a success Turnament Team Structure and Respnsibilities Turnament Directr The Turnament Directr shuld be experienced in playing in turnaments, and must be familiar with the basic rules f wallyball. This directr can play in the turnament if they feel cmfrtable with their duties. Remember, hwever, that hsting a successful turnament shuld be yur #1 pririty. Hsting a turnament means yu will incur sme expenses. These expenses will have t be cvered, and hpefully yu will have sufficient players register t ffset these expenses. One way t develp a budget is t set an entry deadline. This will help yu t estimate the amunt f revenue that the turnament will generate. I usually set a registratin deadline f ne (1) week befre the turnament. If yu have players that are traveling a lng distance this deadline may need t be tw (2) r (3) weeks. Delegates respnsibilities and wrks with ther Directrs Wrks with cntacts in the area in which the turnament will be held Wrks with the Rules Directr (If there is ne) Ensure curts are set up prir t turnament Ensure facility presents gd appearance Ensure all supplies are n hand Arrange fr parking Answer r find smene t answer all questins frm participants Develp perating budget Overall planning f turnament and G T persn Publicity Directr Turnament Prmtin Design, prduce, and distribute entry frm Create and distribute banners/signs/flyers/waiver frm Create spnsr signs and display them Cntact lcal newspapers and advertise Obtain spnsrs Write thank yu letters after turnament 3
Registratin Directr Address and mail frms Obtain entry frms received in the mail and recrd entries Accunt fr mnies received Register late entries Order T-shirts Order awards Hand ut T-Shirts Hand ut ther materials as needed t players at registratin Phtgraph each team Reprt entries t Day f Event Directr prir t each day s event Day f Event Directr(s) If yu d nt use a Day f Event Directr, all respnsibilities listed fr them will be added t the Turnament Directr s duties. These Directrs shuld be experienced in playing in turnaments, and must be familiar with the basic rules f wallyball. Yu can get a separate Directr fr each day. These directrs can play in the turnament if they feel cmfrtable with their duties. G T persn f the day Set up pl play chart Set up schedule fr referees Hld players meeting Obtain and pst results f each match Oversee turnament each day, making all necessary decisins Set up playff brackets Hspitality and Awards Directr Place rder fr fd Establish lcatin fr fd t be served Make sure t have enugh beverages/plates/utensils/cups. Refill beverage cntainer as needed Clean up facility each day Display awards at facility Present Awards 4
Chapter 2 Turnament Preparatin Registratin This is abut the mst hectic time f the turnament. The better prepared yu are, the smther it will run. Select an pen area fr the registratin table. This will allw fr players t wait in line t register. N player shuld pass this lcatin befre they sign-in. Sign In It is imprtant t have a master list (maybe tw) f all the teams. This list shuld have: team name, divisin, player s names, paid/nt paid, shirt size, and signed waiver. When all this infrmatin is recrded and received, yu may prceed t give the players their shirts, rule bks, etc. Shirts It is very imprtant yu cunt shirts when yu receive them and put them in bxes accrding t sizes. This will help t speed up the sign-in prcess. Shuld yu run ut f shirts and/r certain sizes, start a list with the players name, address, phne number, and shirt size. Order additinal shirts (if pssible) and ship them after the turnament r, ffer a different size r, ffer a discunt n the entry fee. Waiver A Waiver frm states that participants relinquish any and all liability fr and cause f actin fr persnal injury, prperty damage r wrngful death ccurring t participant arising ut f participatin. Abslutely n ne can play in a wallyball turnament r league withut a signed waiver! Trphies The purchase and distributin f trphies is the respnsibility f the Turnament Directr r whmever the Turnament Directr delegates the respnsibility t. Trphies/awards shuld be t each divisin. Turnament Fd Fd is typically a majr expense. Fd dnatin is a great way t reduce yur cst and a great way t advertise. Persnally I like having fd left ver. Players can take sme with them t eat later if needed. Be sure nt t run ut f fd! I suggest yu wait until the day befre t buy the fruit. This will give yu an indicatin f hw much t buy and will als insure that the fruit is fresh fr the turnament day. Oranges, apples, bananas, and grapes are the best fr ur purpse. Cut the ranges in quarters. Buy small apples. D nt cut the apples. They ll turn brwn and n ne will eat them. Prvide sandwiches, veggies, r sme ther frm f finger fd. Sme players may vlunteer t bring bars r brwnies. Talk t sme lcal businesses in yur area. Yu may find ut that they are willing t dnate fd t help yur turnament. Remember t give yur spnsrs advertising. 5
Turnament Beverage Yu will need at least ne 5-galln beverage cler. A gd rule f thumb is ne cler per 25 players. Fill the clers with Gatrade r Pwerade. Check with these cmpanies t see if they will furnish the beverage and cups. The fruit and beverage shuld be next t each ther alng with several trashcans. Always have a twel r sme type f receptacle under the beverage clers t allw fr spillage. Yu culd ask players t mark their cups t cut dwn n trash and csts. Clean-Up It is the turnament directr s respnsibility t leave the facility in the same cnditin it was fund. Clean!! Have as many trash cans arund as pssible. Dn t let cups, fd, and wrappers pile up. G arund the club every hur t thrw away trash. If yu d this, it will be a lt easier t clean up at the end. Make sure that yu put away any chairs r tables yu might have used. Take dwn all nets if necessary. If this is a multi-day turnament, it s easier t leave the nets up until play is cmpleted. Please check with the facilities. Lckers and Twels Mst clubs will require a depsit fr twels and lcks. Be aware f thse arrangements s yu can brief the players as they sign in. Emergencies Please be aware f emergency phne numbers and hspitals in the immediate area. Als, have access t ice machines and/r cld packs. Accmmdatins In case yu have teams that have traveled r aren t frm the immediate area, it s always nice t be able t recmmend t them mderately prices htels, restaurants and entertainment. If there s a cnventin bureau r sprts cmmissin in the area, wrk with them. They have great cntacts with htels, restaurants, car rental, etc. With a little hmewrk players will keep cming back. Vlunteers The turnament will run a lt smther if the turnament staff wrks tgether. Take the time befre the turnament t map ut everyne s respnsibility. 6
Players Meeting This is the mst imprtant part f the turnament. Nw is the perfect time t have smene re-d the draw sheets if there have been any changes. First thank the players fr participating. Explain any club rules, such as twels, lckers, using pls r equipment, parking, smking, keeping the club clean, and n black-sled shes! Yu shuld first ask if there are any players wh never have played wallyball r vlleyball befre. Always g ver the basic rules that will be fllwed. Answer player questins. Have a cpy f the rules fr everyne t lk at. The mst imprtant thing is t fllw the rules yu say yu are fllwing. Why wuld anyne want t cme t yur turnament if yu d nt fllw yur wn rules? Using an extra turnament draw pster, explain t the players hw the turnament will be run. Explain the screcards and hw t use them. It is very imprtant they understand refereeing assignments, turning in screcards, and mst imprtantly, t have their team ready t play as sn as matches are finished. Emphasize that yu will nt be calling teams r referees t the curts. It is the team captain s respnsibility. Be sure that the team that refs can play at the level that they ref. Yu want t describe the scring system and the different scring frmats that will be used in pl play and the play-ffs. Yu shuld try t keep the players meeting t thirty minutes. Tell the teams where they are playing r refereeing and where the draw sheets will be lcated. End the players meeting by wishing everyne gd luck and t have a gd time. 7
Chapter 3 Turnament Frmat Turnaments cnsist f pl play (rund-rbin) and playffs (turnament play). After the rund rbin is cmpleted, either all the teams advance t the play-ffs, r the teams with the best recrds advance t the play-ffs. These teams play a single r duble eliminatin frmat t determine the winner. The Turnament Directr will determine the turnament frmat. Pl Play Ideally, pls cnsist f 5 13 teams in the same divisin. Each pl will play n 2 6 designated curts thrughut the entire rund rbin play. See www.wally.ball.net fr rund rbin schedules. The rund rbin schedule lists when teams play and which teams referee. Try t play each team in yur pl at least nce (time permitting). Depending upn the number f teams yu have in a divisin, a match culd cnsist f ne, tw, tw ut f three, r three games. Official wallyball scring is used where a team can scre a pint n every rally until it reaches the freeze pint (three pints less then game pint. Examples: freeze pint wuld be twelve in a fifteen-pint game r fifteen in an eighteen-pint game). Then that team can nly scre when they serve. The team that is behind will be awarded ne mre pint n a side-ut, and then their scre will be als frzen. They will nly be able t scre when they serve after they are frzen. A team must have a tw (2) pint advantage t win. Seeding Teams Fr The Play-Offs Depending upn the scring and play-ff frmat chsen, the tp 2, 3, 4, r 5 teams in a pl with the best win/lss recrd will g t the play-ffs. See www.wally.ball.net fr the draw sheets. If there are teams that are tied fr play-ff r seeding psitins, use the fllwing tiebreaker: 1. Best recrd against each ther, if still tied; 2. Ttal number f pints scred, if still tied; 3. One game t 11 pints if the teams are tied fr a play-ff spt a cin flip if they are tied fr a seed psitin. 8
Turnament Draw The first thing t d is t put all the entry frms int their respective divisins. Yu shuld try t have at least five teams registered t have a pl. If nt, yu will have t call the captains and cmbine thse teams int anther divisin. Try t accmmdate as many teams as pssible. Next yu want t determine hw many pls yu are ging t have. This will tell yu hw many draw sheets yu need t make up. Draw sheets can be drawn t prprtin n a standard sized piece f pster bard. Yu shuld always have a cuple f extra drawn up, just in case. A white bard can als be used. Scring Frmat If there is a time prblem the scring frmats can be changed at the discretin f the turnament directr. Shuld the pl play run late, change the play-ff scring frmat t a shrter versin. If pl play is ahead f schedule, yu may wish t change t a lnger frmat. Teams enjy playing and we want t accmmdate them, but n the ther hand, try t end turnaments at a reasnable time. Use yur discretin. Referees Referees have always been a prblem fr play-ffs. Teams seem t disappear nce the rund rbin play is ver. Anticipate this prblem and link peple up t help referee the play-ffs when the rund rbin is just winding dwn. Equipment And Set-up It is very imprtant t arrive at the club early t set up the nets and put dwn the service lines. If pssible, try t d all f this the night befre s yu can cncentrate n player registratin and the players meeting. The nets shuld be at the crrect height and at tight as pssible. This will allw fr mre play ff the net. Balls shuld be inflated t 3-4 lbs. And feel firm but nt hard. If yu can, try t btain a hand pump and needle valve. Check ball pressure each day f the turnament. 9

Dwnlad mre Rund Rbin Tables, Draw Sheets, r Scre Cards: www.wally.ball.net Miscellaneus Ntes frm the Wallyball Infrmatin Netwrk The rules invlving males and females n the same team will be the same as the rules that gvern all team players with the fllwing exceptins: Men and wmen will alternate service in fur-persn play. A female team member must make ne (1) cntact with the ball if the ball is played mre than nce by a team. Since a blck des nt cunt as ne f the three cntacts allwed a team, if the ball is blcked by a male player, a secnd male player may hit the ball back int the ppnent's curt withut having a female tuch the ball. Teams are separated int pls playing each ther nce r twice during the rund-rbin. Teams are ranked accrding t their win/lss recrd. This is called a Turnament Seed. After the rund-rbin is finished, teams are placed in a turnament bracket accrding t the turnament seed (Win/Lss recrd). Team will then play matches accrding t the turnament bracket. This is called the playffs r turnament play. When assigning referees t matches, try t fllw these guidelines: Use a Certified Wallyball Referee. Referees shuld be able t play at the level f the match that they are assigned t ref. Use tw (2) refs whenever pssible. A blcker may nt redirect a ball during a blck by rtating the wrists t cause the ball t return t the ffensive curt at a lcatin selected by the blcker. The Vertical Plane is the playing area abve the net. It is the width f tw (2) wallyballs. One n the defensive side f the net, and the ther n the ffensive side. League r Turnament Directrs may use their discretin in deciding hw t implement these rules in their league r turnament. In additin, League r Turnament Directrs may change rules slightly in rder t meet their specific circumstances. The League r Turnament Directr is respnsible fr assessing the skill levels f a team. If a team is in the wrng divisin, the Turnament Directr may mve them t the prper divisin. 12
