Head Coach Lon Kruger Lon Kruger was named s 14th head men s basketball coach on April 1, 2011. Owns a 496-320 (.608) collegiate record over 27 years. Has coached at Texas-Pan American (52-59 record from 1982-86), Kansas State (81-46 from 1986-90), Florida (104-80 from 1990-96), Illinois (81-48 from 1996-00) and UNLV (161-71 from 2004-11). Served as head coach of NBA s Atlanta Hawks from 2000-03 (69-122 record) and was an assistant for New York Knicks (2003-04 season). Averaged 25.4 wins at UNLV over five years (four NCAA appearances and one NIT trip) and won at least 21 games each of those five seasons. Coached UNLV to a 55-25 (.688) Mountain West Conference record his last five seasons there. Has taken teams to 13 NCAA Tournaments (14-13 record) and four NITs (4-5 record). The 2-0 Sooners are coming off a 63-59 road win over UT Arlington on Friday while the 1-1 Miners lost at Arizona on Thursday, 72-51. Thursday s contest, the first of three over a four-day span for OU in Orlando, will air on the Sooner Radio Network (KOKC 1520 AM in City; KTBZ 1430 AM in Tulsa; Sirius 123; XM 191) with Ed Murray and Mike Houck announcing. The game will be televised by with Jon Sciambi and Fran Fraschilla calling the action. FIVE THINGS TO KNOW This week s Old Spice Classic marks OU s fifth straight Thanksgiving week tournament. The Sooners advanced to the championship game of last year s 76 Classic (2-1 record), competed in the 2010 Maui Invitational (0-3), the 2009 Great Alaska Shootout (1-2) and won the 2008 NIT Season Tip-Off (4-0). OU owns a 2-1 all-time record against UTEP. Thursday s game will mark the first matchup outside the state of (two games in Norman, one in City). The Sooners have held their first two opponents to combined shooting percentages of.363 from the field and.176 from 3-point range (6-for-34). OU s 3-point field goal percentage defense is tops in the Big 12. Thursday s game will mark the second of five straight contests away from Norman. Seven of OU s first nine games are away from home. OU s.328 field goal percentage at UT Arlington on Friday was its lowest in victory in five seasons (beat Colorado 54-49 while also shooting.328 in 2008 Big 12 Tournament first round). The field goal mark was the Sooners lowest in victory in a true road game in at least 32 years. TEAM UPDATE The Sooners have exhibited a balanced offensive attack through two games, with six players averaging between 8.0 and 13.0 points per contest. Ten players average between 14.5 and 26.5 minutes per game. OU returned its top six scorers and 88 percent of its scoring from last season, but newcomers rank first, third and fifth in scoring average through two games. After averaging a +3.3 rebounding margin last season (their best mark in three years), the Sooners have outboarded their two foes by an average of 14.5 this season. They were +19 against ULM and +10 at UT Arlington. With its 63-59 win at UT Arlington on Friday, OU has already matched its win total in true road games from each of the last three years. The Sooners were 1-9 in true road contests each of the last three seasons. is averaging 15.5 offensive rebounds to its opponents 8.0, and has registered a 27-12 advantage in second-chance points. FRIDAY S UT ARLINGTON RECAP (BOX SCORE ON PAGE 10 OF THESE NOTES) s 63-59 win at UT Arlington on Friday was just its fourth true road victory in the last four years. The Sooners went 1-9 in each of the last three seasons in true road contests. UT Arlington won a school-record 24 games last year. OU won despite shooting just.328 from the field,.278 (5-for-18) from 3-point range and.625 (20-for-32) from the free throw line. UTA recorded respective.379,.167 and.571 shooting marks. After taking a 3-0 lead on a Je lon Hornbeak 3-pointer, OU missed its next 11 shots and eventually fell behind 12-3. Trailing 19-11, the Sooners went on a 22-1 run to take a 13-point lead before settling for a 38-28 halftime advantage. OU extended its lead to 17 (47-30) five minutes into the second half. UTA tied the game at 57-57 with 2:46 remaining before a Steven Pledger 3-pointer with 2:24 left put the Sooners up for good. OU freshman Buddy Hield scored a game-high 17 points off the bench, all in the first half. He scored 11 straight points during the Sooners 22-1 run. Hield finished the game 6-for-10 from the field, 2-for-4 from 3-point range and 3-for-4 from the free throw line while adding 4 rebounds and a steal in his 19 minutes. Both teams committed 18 turnovers, but OU outscored the Mavericks 21-11 off those miscues. OU won the boards battle, 48-38. BIG RETURNS Thanks to the loss of just one scholarship senior (forward C.J. Washington averaged 2.0 points and 3.4 rebounds), the Sooners returned the bulk of their production in every statistical category from 2011-12. That includes 88 percent of the team s points, 81 percent of its rebounds, 78 percent of its assists, 77 percent of its blocks and 74 percent of its steals. OU welcomed back its top six scorers from last season, including all five starters. Andrew Fitzgerald, Sam Grooms and Romero Osby each started all 31 contests. Steven Pledger started 30 games while Cameron Clark started 28. Pledger is the Big 12 s leading returning scorer (16.2 ppg), Osby is the Big 12 s leading returning rebounder (7.3 rpg), Fitzgerald is the Big 12 s leading returner in field goal percentage (.469; minimum of 5.0 makes per game) and Grooms led the league in assist-to-turnover ratio (2.8) and ranked second in assists (6.0 apg). FRESH FACES The Sooners welcomed nine newcomers to the roster, with four of them playing significant roles so far in 2012-13. Junior forward Amath M Baye (6-8, 208) sat out last year after transferring from Wyoming and was voted the Preseason Big 12 Newcomer of the Year by league coaches. He averaged 12.0 points and a team-high 5.7 rebounds as a sophomore for the Cowboys in 2010-11. A trio of 6-3 freshman guards is also seeing plenty of playing time. Isaiah Cousins is a three-star recruit from Mount Vernon, N.Y. Cousins averaged 15.8 points, 4.4 rebounds and 4.2 assists per game last year to earn New York s Section 1 Mr. Basketball honors. Je lon Hornbeak was rated as the nation s No. 102 recruit last year by Rivals.com and averaged 12.0 points and 7.5 rebounds for a talentladen Grace Prep Academy squad out of Arlington, Texas. Buddy Hield is a noted scorer who, like Hornbeak, was a four-star recruit by Rivals. Ranked 86th nationally, Hield, from the Bahamas, averaged 22.7 points and 4.0 rebounds in only 21.0 minutes per game last year for Sunrise Christian Academy outside of Wichita, Kan. SOONERS SIGN THREE Head coach Lon Kruger announced the signing of high school guard Jordan Woodard and junior college big men Dominique Elliott and Keshaun Hamilton to national letters of intent Nov. 14. Woodard is a 6-0, 170-pound point guard who is regarded by Rivals.com as the country s No. 135 recruit in the 2013 class. In his two years playing at Edmond (Okla.) Memorial High School, he has led his teams to a 53-3 (.946) record and a pair of Class 6A state title game appearances, winning the 2011 state crown. His squads went 26-2 his sophomore year and 27-1 his junior season. As a junior, Woodard averaged 13.1 points, 4.7 assists, 4.1 rebounds and 2.4 steals per game while shooting 49 percent from the field, 46 percent from 3-point range and 88 percent from the free throw line.
