For the second time in five games, the Cubs struck out 17 times in a victory the team also did so this past Tuesday vs. the White Sox in a 7-2 win Chicago is the first team in the last 100 years to record two wins while striking out at least 17 times in each within a five-game span the 2006 Braves twice won while striking out at least 17 times in a six-game span, May 22-28. Jason Heyward s 11th-inning home run was his fourth career go-ahead home run in extra innings, and his first since September 15, 2015 at the Brewers while with the Cardinals. THE GAME OF RISP: In the Cubs last eight games since July 22, the pitching staff has allowed just one hit in 39 at-bats with RISP (.026) and none to a position player that lone hit came in the second inning on July 25 when White Sox pitcher Carlos Rodón delivered a two-run double. Cubs pitching has held the Brewers hitless in 16 at-bats with runners in scoring position in the first two games of this series. THE NEXT BLASTS: Kris Bryant needs one more home run to become just the fourth Cub ever with three 20-homer seasons by his age 25 campaign or younger Bryant, who hit 26 homers in 2015 and 39 in 2016, would join Ron Santo (four times, 1961-65), Anthony Rizzo (three times, 2013-15) and Billy Williams (three times, 1961-63). Anthony Rizzo, who last evening hit his 24th homer of the season, needs one more long ball to become just the third Cubs lefthanded hitter to record four 25-homer campaigns he would join Billy Williams (10 times from 1961-72) and Bill Nicholson (five times between 1940-47). WHAT LIES AHEAD: Of the 59 games remaining for the Cubs this season, 40 are against teams currently owning a record that is below.500, or 68 percent of them however, this is the third game (1-1) of a stretch that sees the Cubs play teams with winning records in 12 of 15 games through August 13. WHERE THERE S A WILL : Willson Contreras, who has reached safely in 14-straight games, has hit 16 home runs this season, the most for any N.L. catcher and tied for second-most among all major league backstops with the Yankees Gary Sanchez and Seattle s Mike Zunino Kansas City s Salvador Perez leads with 21 home runs this season. Contreras.830 OPS this season is third among N.L. catchers since making his debut on June 17 of last year, Contreras has produced an.837 OPS that s the fourth-highest of any N.L. catcher behind the Dodgers Yasmani Grandal (.855), the Giants Buster Posey (.852) and the Marlins J.T. Realmuto (.837). THERE S A WADE: With his save last night, Cubs closer Wade Davis has extended his single-season franchise record for consecutive save chances converted, as he s been successful in his first 21 opportunities this year that surpasses Flash Gordon in 2001, Ryan Dempster in 2005 and Carlos Marmol in 2012, all of whom had 19-straight successful save chances in a single campaign. The franchise mark for consecutive save chances converted is held by Dempster (26 straight in the 2005-06 seasons) Davis 21- straight save conversions are third-longest in club history overall.
