May 2018, Volume 20, Issue 5 Message from the President Our first ever Cruise-In at the Spring Folly last week went very well. Although the weather forecast early in the week was threatening rain for the weekend, the weather actually turned out to be just about perfect for the event. Many beautiful cars were on display in the parking lots by the Kernersville Farmers Market Pavilion. In addition, three cars were placed at each of two locations on North Main Street among the vendors booths. The intent of placing the cars on Main Street was to make the folks visiting the vendors aware of our Cruise-In. This effort appeared to be worthwhile since many people stopped to comment on or ask questions about the cars and, while doing so, were directed to the main event going on in the parking lots. At our upcoming members meeting, we can discuss if we want to continue the Cruise In format at future Spring Folly events instead of the car show that we have historically conducted. We soon will be starting our summer schedule of Cruise-Ins. All approvals for use and closure of Main Street have been received from the Kernersville Town Council and NCDOT. And, arrangements have been made with the Kernersville Police to handle the street closure and to provide security during the events. Now it is up to us to make sure that we continue to provide the atmosphere that the area car owners have become accustomed to when they attend one of our events. Ruth Ann and John have done the planning for entertainment during the events. It is up to us other club members to provide the workers to assure that set-up and parking assistance is provided. Please plan to bring your cars out for these events and volunteer to help with parking or one of the other activities that are required to make the Cruise-Ins successful. In the last issue of the Spinning Wheel, I mentioned the possibility of having some club events focused on automotive technical subjects. I requested that the membership think about this possibility and make some suggestions of venues for such events. If you have a suggestion, please bring it up for consideration at the club business meeting next Tuesday. Looking forward to seeing you all at the meeting on May 15. Nelson May Meeting Olympic Restaurant Kernersville AACA s Old Salem Chapter monthly meeting will be Tuesday, May 15 th at The Olympic Restaurant, 1541 W. Mountain St., in Kernersville. Dinner starts at 6:00 PM and the business part of the meeting will start at 7:00 PM. Don t forget to invite and/or bring your antique/classic vehicle friend(s) with you for a fun evening! See ya Tuesday for some great food, fun, and fellowship! 1

Jimmy Monroe Hailey April 12, 1939 - May 2, 2018 In Loving Memory Mr. Jimmy Monroe Hailey, 79, went to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ in the early morning hours of May 2, 2018. Jim was born on April 12, 1939 in Davidson County to the late Edward Eugene and Mary Jo Hailey. He began his career in the trucking industry with McLean Trucking after graduating from Gray High School in 1957. In 1975, Jim earned a Certificate in Transportation and Traffic Management from Davidson Community College. He continued his career path by accepting a position with Old Dominion Freight Line where he worked in the Traffic Department before being promoted to the Director of the Air Freight Division. Due to a common passion of NASCAR racing with life-long friend Richard Childress they teamed together to form RCR Promotions Show Car Program. While fielding cars driven by the late Dale Earnhardt, Jim grew the RCR/GM Goodwrench show car program from one car in 1988 to a multiple car fleet up to his retirement in 2001. Jim enjoyed a NASCAR driving career from 1962 to 1974 competing in various divisions from Bowman Gray Stadium to Daytona International Speedway including one start in the Winston Cup Grand National Series. He also later became involved in NASCAR Late Model Stock Car Racing as an owner that competed throughout the Southeast winning numerous races. Jim was also a member of the AACA Old Salem Chapter car club where he continued sharing his passion for automobiles proudly displaying his 1936 Studebaker at many events. He was involved with the Purple Heart Foundation helping to bring recognition to our Veterans. Jim proudly served his country in the United States Marine Corp from 1956 to 1969. He was a member of Sprague Street Baptist Church and later a charter member of Century Park Baptist Church serving the Lord as a trustee, deacon and on various committees. Surviving of the home is his wife Patricia of 60 years, three sons, Ron Hailey (Michelle), Gary Hailey (Penny), Jimmy Hailey Jr. (Ginger), four grandsons Matthew Hailey, Devan Hailey, Tyler Hailey, Hunter Hailey, he was preceded in death by a grandson Ryne Hailey. Jim deeply loved all of his family and was passionate about attending his grandsons sporting events with "Trish" by his side. 2

Sincere condolences to his wife, Pat, and their family. Sincere sympathy to Lisa & David Lineback on the sudden passing of Lisa s brother s wife at only 51 years of age. Tragic! Congratulations to Phyllis & Ray Hauck on the birth of their new little grandson, Wyatt Charles, 8.5 lbs. So sorry for Lou Ann Chipman now having to deal with a bum right shoulder, lots of pain, had to go to doc for cortisone shot!
