Coleman Coliseum (15,383) A Look at the Cardinals Ball State plays the first of four straight games away from home Friday when it visits Southeastern Conference opponent Alabama for the first-ever meeting between the teams. The Cardinals are in the midst of a busy stretch that will see them play seven times in the season s first 19 days. Friday s game is the second of four games Ball State will play as part of the Men Who Speak Up Main Event. The Cardinals season-opening win at Saint Louis was also part of the event. Following the Alabama game, BSU will travel to Las Vegas for the remaining two games versus Coppin State (Nov. 21) and Southern Utah (Nov. 23) at the MGM Grand. The Cardinals suffered their first loss with an 80-74 overtime defeat Tuesday against long-time rival Indiana State. The loss dropped BSU 12 spots to No. 123 in the Ken Pomeroy ratings. The Cardinals reached as high as No. 127 last season and finished at No. 155 for their best year-end rating since 2004-05. Ball State features two of the top three scorers in the Mid-American Conference through two games in sophomore point guard Tayler Persons (23.5 ppg, 2nd) and senior forward Franko House (22.0 ppg, 3rd). Both have topped the 20-point mark in both games. Persons is seeing his first action for the Cardinals after sitting out last season as a transfer from Northern Kentucky. House, a preseason All-MAC selection, matched his career-high with 23 points in the opener at Saint Louis and set a career-high with 14 rebounds Tuesday against Indiana State. He is averaging a double-double through two games (22.0 ppg, 10.0 rpg) and is 41 points away from becoming the 29th 1,000-point scorer in program history. Last Time Out MUNCIE, Ind. -- Tayler Persons and Franko House had big nights for the second game in a row, but Indiana State locked in on Ball State s other weapons well enough to emerge Tuesday night with an 80-74 victory in overtime. Persons (26 points) and House (21) topped the 20-point mark for the second straight game. They combined to shoot 16 of 31 from the floor, but Indiana State (1-1) forced the rest of the Cardinals into a tough night. Ball State (1-1) finished the game shooting 38 percent as a team. I want to give Indiana State great credit, Ball State coach James Whitford said. I thought they played a really good game and made some big plays down the stretch. I thought they did a terrific job on Sean (Sellers), Francis (Kiapway) and Ryan (Weber), and I thought that really hurt us. Ball State got off to a slow start with 11 turnovers in the opening half as the Cardinals struggled to find some flow offensively. After recording 21 assists on 30 made baskets in the season-opening win at Saint Louis, BSU managed just 10 assists Tuesday. A lot of it is the way Indiana State plays, Whitford said. They deny passes everywhere. What they force you to do is make plays. It wasn t going to be a game like the last one. The Cardinals cut that turnover total down to four over the final 25 minutes and started to get better shots. They just weren t making them. Ball State shot 34 percent in the second half and made only 4 of 17 attempts from 3-point range for the night. But the Cardinals managed to hang around, partly because of their work on the glass with 16 offensive rebounds. They trailed by as many as eight in the second half but came back to grab a 60-59 lead on a lay-in from House with 2:01 to play. Brandon Murphy gave Indiana State a 64-62 lead with 15 seconds left in regulation, but Persons drew a foul on the other end and hit both free throws to force overtime. But the Cardinals could not ride that momentum. Indiana State scored on all but one of its possessions in the extra period, going 4 for 4 from the floor and 7 for 8 from the foul line in the process. The dagger was a 3-pointer from Matt Van Scyoc that bounced high off the rim and fell through to put the Sycamores up 74-68 with 1:32 to play. From there, Ball State couldn t cut the margin to any fewer than four points. Brenton Scott led Indiana State with 25 points, while Van Scyoc added 14. Point guard Everett Clemons finished one assist shy of a triple-double with 11 points, 10 rebounds and nine assists. The Sycamores attempted 12 fewer shots than Ball State but made one more. Trey Moses gave the Cardinals a third doublefigure scorer with 10 points on 5-of-10 shooting. House led Ball State on the boards with a careerhigh 14 rebounds for a double-double. Picking up Where They Left off After making the second-most 3-pointers in program history last season (305), Ball State came out hot from deep in the Nov. 11 opener against Saint Louis. Persons, Teague Debut Ball State will get a boost in 2016-17 from a pair of players who sat out last season -- point guard Tayler Persons and forward Tahjai Teague. He will have three years to play for the Cardinals. Teague redshirted last season in his first year with program. He was an Indiana All-Star as a senior at Indianapolis Pike High School in 2015 and was rated as highly as No. 103 nationally in his recruiting class. Both players have made an immediate impact. Persons leads the team at 23.5 points per game, and Teague is averaging 7.0 points and 7.5 rebounds. Cardinals Sign Ishmael El-Amin Ball State signed point guard Ishmael El-Amin, one of the top high school players in Minnesota, during the November signing period. The 6-foot-4, 175-pound El-Amin averaged 15 points per game last season for Hopkins High School in Minnetonka, Minnesota. He led his team to a 31-1 record, a state championship and a No. 11 national ranking from MaxPreps. An all-conference player, El-Amin has been rated as highly as 4 stars by the major recruiting services. He is listed as the seventh-best player in Minnesota s 2017 class by 247Sports. El-Amin is the son of professional player and former Connecticut point guard Khalid El- Amin, who led the Huskies to the 1999 NCAA championship. Ohio is next with six, followed by Kent State with five. 7 NCAA Tournament Appearances The second-most of any team in the MAC since 1980 (Miami has eight). 10 All-America Selections The most of any program in MAC history. 29 Ball State s 29 wins in 1988-89 still rank as the second-most in a single season in MAC history. The Cardinals finished that season 29-3. 1,176 All-Time Wins The Cardinals have won 1,176 games in 95 seasons of play. 2,485 Ball State s Bonzi Wells (1994-98) ranks as the top scorer in MAC history with 2,485 career points. He also ranks first in MAC history with 347 career steals. 6

Welcome to the Program Ball State added four scholarship newcomers this offseason with a pair of transfers and two incoming freshmen. The Cardinals added combo guard Jontrell Walker from Incarnate Word and graduate big man DouDou Gueye from South Carolina State. Gueye has one year to play, while Walker must sit out this season and will then have two years of eligibility left. Walker averaged 13.1 points per game over his first two collegiate seasons and led the nation in free throw shooting last year at 93.3 percent. The incoming freshmen are Kyle Mallers from Carroll High School in Fort Wayne, Indiana, and Zach Hollywood from Bradley-Bourbonnais High School in Bradley, Illinois. Mallers has played in both games this season as a wing, while Hollywood is redshirting. Most Improved In improving from 7-23 in 2014-15 to 21-14 last season, Ball State made the fourth-biggest jump in the country (source: NCAA). Improvement is determined by adding the difference in win total and the difference in loss total from the previous year and then dividing by two. The 2015-16 Cardinals tied the 2001-02 team for the program record for games played (35). Ball State ended the season at No. 155 out of 351 Division I teams in the Ken Pomeroy rankings. It was the Cardinals best finish since 2004-05 (No. 105). The team reached as high as No. 127 in the rankings last season. MAC West Titles Ball State shared the 2016 MAC West Division championship with Central Michigan after being picked last in the division s preseason poll. Since the MAC went to the divisional format in 1998, Ball State has won or shared five division titles: 1998 (co), 2000 (co), 2002, 2009 (co) and 2016 (co). Postseason Run Ball State made its first postseason appearance since 2002 when it accepted a bid to the 2016 CollegeInsider.com Postseason Tournament (CIT). The Cardinals scored massive comeback wins in each of the first two rounds, coming from 17 points down in the opener at Tennessee State and 16 down in the second round against UT Martin. The run came to an end in the quarterfinals with a 69-67 loss to eventual tournament champion Columbia. Center Trey Moses played the best basketball of his freshman season in the CIT, averaging 13.3 points, 7.7 rebounds and 2.3 assists over Ball State s three games. Franko House Named All-MAC Forward Franko House was named to the All- MAC Second Team and the MAC All-Defensive Team in 2016. Of the 20 players in the league selected to an all-conference team, House was the only one to also be named to the all-defensive team. House was one of three players in the MAC to rank among the top two on his team in points, rebounds, assists and blocked shots. The other two were Toledo s Nathan Boothe and Kent State s Jimmy Hall. House led the Cardinals in points (427) and ranked second on the team in rebounds (202), assists (75) and blocks (19). Nearly 3-Point Record Ball State made 305 3-pointers last season, finishing five shy of the school record (310 in 2001-02). The team s 539 treys over the past two seasons are the most in any two-year period for the program since the inception of the 3-point line. The Cardinals broke the school record for 3 s in a game with 18 on Feb. 27, 2016 versus Eastern Michigan. Ball State outscored its opponents 525-369 from beyond the arc in league play. Individual 3 s Francis Kiapway ranked third in the MAC last season at 41.8 percent from 3-point range, while Ryan Weber (40.0) was eighth and Sean Sellers (38.8) was 12th. Only once previously had Ball State had two players finish the same season at 40 percent or better (minimum 100 attempts) -- Randy Zachary (45.5) and Mark Hardwick (43.9) in 1993-94. Kiapway (74 made 3 s) and Weber (70) rank third and fourth, respectively, on the Cardinals list for 3-pointers in a season. Last year marked only the second time in program history Ball State had two players make at least 65 3 s in a season -- Chris Williams (90) and Patrick Jackson (81) in 2001-02. Recruiting the State Ball State s roster this season features five former Indiana All-Stars -- Kyle Mallers (2016), Tahjai Teague (2015), Tayler Persons (2014), Sean Sellers (2014) and Jeremie Tyler (2014). It is the most Indiana All-Stars the Cardinals have ever had on the roster at one time. Each year the Indiana All-Star Team features the top 13 high school seniors in the state. Ball State has had a total of 35 Indiana All-Stars throughout the years. The Cardinals had 19 from the 1985-2003 high school graduating classes, coinciding with the most successful period on the court in program history. They then signed only two over the next 10 years before cashing in on the 2014 class. Ball State finished last season 21-14 and shared the Mid-American Conference West Division championship with a 10-8 league mark. The Cardinals earned a berth in the CollegeInsider.com Postseason Tournament (CIT) and reached the quarterfinals. It marked Ball State s first 20-win season and first postseason appearance in 14 years. Coming on the heels of a seven-win campaign in 2014-15, the Cardinals turnaround ranked as the fourth-largest of any team in the nation. Ball State ended the 2015-16 season at No. 155 in the Ken Pomeroy rankings, marking its best finish since the 2004-05 campaign. The Cardinals, who were picked last in the MAC preseason poll, tied the school record for games played in a season with 35. Ball State led the MAC in scoring defense (66.8) while ranking second in the league and 40th nationally in field goal percentage defense (.405). Offensively, Ball State hit the second-most 3-pointers in school history (305) and finished as the MAC s top assist team during league play at 14.7 per game. Whitford came incredibly close to winning MAC Coach of the Year honors, finishing second to Akron s Keith Dambrot. He tied Dambrot with 14 first-place votes but ended up one point behind the Akron coach in total points (111-110). Whitford laid the foundation for the future at Ball State during his first two years, installing his system and ramping up the Cardinals recruiting efforts. His first two Ball State teams were heavy on youth, with the 2014-15 squad ranking among the 25 youngest in the country. Both teams featured the Mid-American Conference Freshman of the Year, including Sean Sellers in 2014-15. Whitford signed a 2014 freshman class that included three state champions, a prep school national runner up and, for the first time at Ball State since 1996, two Indiana All-Stars. Scout.com recruiting analyst Brian Snow said of the group, Ball State s 2014 recruiting class is one of the best mid-major recruiting classes in the country. The future is bright in Muncie. Whitford has now recruited five former Indiana All-Stars to Ball State -- Sellers, Jeremie Tyler, Tahjai Teague, Tayler Persons and Kyle Mallers. In the decade prior to Whitford s arrival, the Cardinals signed a total of three Indiana All-Stars. The 2016-17 season will mark the first time the Ball State roster has ever included five Indiana All-Stars. Whitford was introduced as the 19th men s basketball coach in Ball State history on April 10, 2013. In his career as an assistant coach at Arizona, Xavier and Miami University, his teams posted an overall record of 400-208, reached the NCAA tournament 10 times and played in the postseason 13 times. ON THE BENCH Jason Grunkemeyer Associate Head Coach Fourth Season Miami University, 2001 A former standout at Miami, Grunkemeyer was previously an assistant coach with the RedHawks and at Saint Louis. He played at Miami when James Whitford was an assistant coach on the staff and helped the RedHawks to the Sweet 16 in 1999. He later served five years on the Miami staff under Charlie Coles. Brian Thornton Assistant Coach Third Season Xavier, 2005 A former Academic All-American at Xavier, Thornton joined the Ball State staff in May 2014 after two years at Winthrop. He helped the Eagles to a 20-win season in 2013-14. Thornton also had previous stops as director of basketball operations at Xavier and assistant coach at Furman. He played at both Vanderbilt and Xavier, scoring more than 500 points at each school. Danny Peters Assistant Coach Third Season Ohio State, 2010 Peters joined the Ball State staff in June 2014 after serving the previous two years as the assistant director of basketball operations at Arizona. Peters played at Ohio State, earning his degree from the school in 2010. He then spent two years as a graduate manager at Arizona before being promoted to assistant director of operations.
