The Orange and Blue enter the conference championships with a record of 2-2 within the Big Ten, posting wins against Michigan State and Ohio State. 2004 Second-Team All-Big Ten performers Ashley Williams and Cara Pomeroy lead the Illini and are in good postition to repeat as some of the top performers in the conference. Williams has two titles on the season, while Pomeroy is currently on a roll with 10 event titles; seven of those coming on bars. Pomeroy has won fi ve consecutive bar titles heading into this weekend, scoring no lower than a 9.900 in her last four meets. Pomeroy, ranked No. 7 on bars in the nation, will need a near-perfect performance facing Elise Ray of Michigan, who is currently ranked No. 1 in the nation on bars and posted a perfect 10.0 last season to take home the conference crown, in addition to event titles on fl oor, beam and in the all-around. As intimidating as Ray s credentials may seem, Pomeroy is up to the challenge, with a perfect 10.0 listed in her repertoire as well. Illini Head Coach Bob Starkell Bob Starkell begins his sixth year as the head coach of the Fighting Illini women s gymnastics team, and his 12th year overall at the University of Illinois. Since he took over for former head coach Lynn Brueckman in 2000, Starkell s squads have posted nine of the top 10 team scores in school history, including the school record of 196.300 that was set last year. Additionally, in 2004 he coached his squad to an NCAA final ranking of 22nd in the nation, along with leading both Cara Pomeroy and Ashley Williams to NCAA Nationals. Under the direction of Starkell, Williams was the 2002 Big Ten Freshman of the Year and the 2002 Illinois Female Newcomer of the Year. Illinois has had five All-Big Ten selections, 26 Scholastic All-Americans and 45 Academic All-Big Ten selections while Starkell has been at the helm of the Illini program. For his efforts, he was named the Wisconsin Women s Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Coach of the Year. Before becoming the head coach for both Oshkosh programs, Starkell served two years as the men s assistant coach at Oshkosh. Starkell has also had great success with men s programs, coaching five All-Americans. He helped produce four Division II individual champions, one each on the vault, pommel horse, still rings and floor. One of his gymnasts also became a member of the 1992 U.S. National Team. Prior to coming to Illinois, Starkell spent seven years at the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh, both as a student-athlete and a coach. He competed for the Titans gymnastics team for four years, completing his eligibility in 1990 and earning a B.S. in physical education in 1992. At UW-Oshkosh, Starkell placed among the top-10 in the floor exercise at the national championships in 1989 and `90, earning All-America honors in 89.
