Worthen Arena (11,500) About the Cardinals Ball State returns home after two straight games on the road to host MAC West Division foe Central Michigan in the first of two meetings between the teams this season. The Cardinals are 17-5 in MAC West Division games over the past three seasons, including a 9-1 mark last year. BSU is 1-1 against the division this year. Ball State is coming off a 73-58 loss Saturday at Western Michigan. Guards Tayler Persons (13 points) and Ishmael El-Amin (11) led the Cardinals in scoring. Senior guard Sean Sellers surpassed 1,000 points for his career at Western Michigan. He became the 30th member of the Cardinals 1,000-point club. Sellers is the second BSU player to reach the 1,000-point mark this season. Persons accomplished the feat Nov. 22 at Bucknell. Ball State ranks second in the MAC in field goal percentage defense during league play (.409). The Cardinals are holding opponents to 38.8 percent (66 for 170) inside the arc but surrendering 45.5 percent (35 for 77) from 3-point range. Ball State has won 10 of 12 games since Thanksgiving, including a nine-game winning streak that ended Jan. 6. The Cardinals check in at No. 144 in the Ken Pomeroy ratings as the thirdhighest team from the MAC (Buffalo is No. 86, Toledo is No. 126). Junior center Trey Moses is averaging a double-double over the past seven games at 10.9 points and 10.7 rebounds. LAST TIME OUT KALAMAZOO, Mich. (Jan. 13, 2018) -- Western Michigan got off to a fast start and led throughout Saturday to hand Ball State a 73-58 loss. Sean Sellers joined Ball State s 1,000-point club, while a pair of point guards led BSU in scoring. Tayler Persons finished with 13 points and five assists, while Ishmael El-Amin came off the bench to add 11 points. But Ball State (11-6, 2-2 MAC) could never dig its way out of an early hole created by Western Michigan s 8-for-9 shooting start from the floor. The Broncos built a double-digit lead less than 5 minutes into the game, and the Cardinals spent the rest of the game playing catch-up. Western Michigan (11-6, 3-1 MAC) hit 9 of 18 3-pointers to stay out in front, and the Broncos beat the Cardinals to 13 offensive rebounds. Western Michigan was very physical around the rim, and I thought that was part of the story of the game, Ball State head coach James Whitford said. I thought they played a really good game. I thought we kept competing all the way through, shared the ball and tried to play the game the right way. We just had a tough one. Sellers, a senior from Greensburg, Indiana, had nine points on a trio of 3-pointers to become the 30th player to score 1,000 points in a Ball State uniform. Fellow senior Francis Kiapway hit two 3-pointers of his own to take over sole possession of second place on the Cardinals career list for 3 s. He now has 205 and trails only Jesse Berry (224). Sellers is tied for third on that list with 203. Ball State fought back to cut a 16-point deficit to 33-25 on a 3-pointer from El-Amin late in the first half. But Michael Flowers answered with a trey for Western Michigan, and then the Broncos scored the first six points of the second half to push their lead to 42-25. The lead swelled to as many as 20, but Ball State continued to claw back. The Cardinals pulled within 10 on another El-Amin 3 with 3:45 to play, but that was as close as they could get. (Feb. 18, 2017) -- Tayler Persons scored a career-high 32 points to lead seven double-figure scorers as Ball State held off Central Michigan 109-100 in overtime at McGuirk Arena. The second straight OT road win kept Ball State (17-10, 8-6 MAC) alone atop the Mid-American Conference West Division standings. We re playing good basketball, Ball State coach James Whitford said. We ve really played well three and a half of the past four games. Sometimes you win these ones, and sometimes you lose them. But for us to come on the road and get back-to-back wins is huge for us. Trey Moses (14 points, 12 rebounds) and Franko House (11 points, 10 boards) finished with double-doubles as the Cardinals swept the season series from the Chippewas (16-11, 6-8 MAC). For Moses, it was his third in a row. Francis Kiapway matched his season-high with 18 points, while Ryan Weber (12), Sean Sellers (11) and Tahjai Teague (11) also scored double figures. Ball State used an eight-point spurt from Kiapway in the final 90 seconds of the first half to build a 47-40 lead at the break. The Cardinals then led for all but 18 seconds of the second half. Braylon Rayson s fall-away 3-pointer from the corner tied the game at 90. The Cardinals had the last possession, but Kiapway s 3 in the final seconds was off the mark, and the game went to overtime. Central Michigan grabbed the first lead on a Cecil Williams 3-point play. But the Cardinals followed with an 8-1 run, including a big 3-pointer from Sellers when the game was tied, to regain command. Ball State scored its final 12 points at the free throw line as Central Michigan fouled to try to stay in the game. Ball State vs Central Michigan 2/18/17 4:30 p.m. at Mount Pleasant, Mich. MAC West Titles Ball State shared the MAC West Division championship for the second straight year in 2017, finishing tied atop the standings with Western Michigan. Since the MAC went to the divisional format in 1998, Ball State has won or shared six division titles: 1998 (co), 2000 (co), 2002, 2009 (co), 2016 (co) and 2017 (co). Tough Schedule The non-conference portion of Ball State s schedule was highlighted by six opponents that reached the NCAA tournament during the past two seasons and two Final Four squads from that stretch. BSU played Dayton (2017 NCAA), Oklahoma (2016 Final Four), Stony Brook (2016 NCAA), Oregon (2017 Final Four), Bucknell (2017 NCAA) and Notre Dame (2017 NCAA). Four of those games -- Oklahoma, Oregon, Bucknell and Stony Brook -- were tied to the Phil Knight Invitational, an event organized by ESPN to honor the Nike founder. Strength Returning BSU returned seven of its top nine scorers and 70 percent of its scoring from a year ago. Last season, Tayler Persons became the first Ball State player to record more than 500 points (526, 15.5 ppg) and 150 assists (167, 4.9 apg) in a season. The Cardinals also returned center Trey Moses, who was a MAC All-Defensive Team selection last year. Moses led the league in blocks during conference play with 1.4 per game. For the full season, he was the only player in the MAC to rank in the top five in the league in rebounding (8.3), blocks per game (1.1) and field goal percentage (.561). JAMES WHITFORD Head Coach (Fifth Season) The Whitford File COACHING HISTORY April 2013-Present Head Coach Ball State 2011-13 Arizona Assoc. Head Coach 2009-11 Arizona Assistant Coach 2005-09 Xavier Assistant Coach 1996-2005 Miami (Ohio) Asst. Coach 1994-96 Miami (Ohio) Admin. Asst. EDUCATION Wisconsin, 1994 Bachelor s in Political Science Miami (Ohio), 1996 Master s in Sports Studies James Whitford is in his fifth season as the Ball State men s basketball head coach in 2017-18, continuing to lead a resurgence in the Cardinals program. Whitford s teams have surpassed 20 wins and shared the Mid-American Conference West Division championship in each of the past two seasons. The program had not achieved the first of those feats in consecutive seasons since the early 1990s and had not accomplished the second in back-to-back years in the league s divisional history (since 1998). Ball State has also played in the postseason in each of the past two seasons with trips to the CIT, including a quarterfinal appearance at the end of the 2015-16 campaign. Whitford s 2016-17 squad went 21-13 (11-7 MAC), tying for the seventh-most wins in program history for the second year in a row. BSU ranked among the top 15 percent of teams in the country in scoring offense at 78.7 points per game. It was the program s highest per-game scoring output in the past 40 years. The Cardinals reached the semifinals of the MAC Tournament for the first time since 2011 before falling to No. 1 seed Akron by just four points. The 2015-16 team went 21-14 (10-8 MAC) on the strength of the league s No. 1 scoring defense (66.8). The Cardinals shared the MAC West title after being picked last in the preseason poll. Coming on the heels of a seven-win campaign in 2014-15, Ball State s turnaround ranked as the fourth-largest of any team in the nation. The CIT berth marked the program s first postseason appearance in 14 years. Whitford came incredibly close to winning MAC Coach of the Year honors for the 2015-16 season, finishing second to Akron s Keith Dambrot. He tied Dambrot with 14 first-place votes but ended up one point behind the Akron coach in total points (111-110). Whitford has ushered in an era of 3-point shooting in Muncie. Three of the top four outputs from beyond the arc in program history have come during his tenure: 234 in 2014-15, 305 in 2015-16, and a school-record 319 in 2016-17. The Cardinals have also been one of the MAC s most unselfish teams under his guidance, leading the league in assists during conference play in 2015-16 (14.7) and ranking second in that category in 2016-17 (15.1). Whitford laid the foundation for the future at Ball State during his first two years, installing his system and ramping up the Cardinals recruiting efforts. His first two Ball State teams were heavy on youth, with the 2014-15 squad ranking among the 25 youngest in the country. Both teams featured the Mid-American Conference Freshman of the Year, including Sean Sellers in 2014-15. Whitford has now recruited eight former Indiana All-Stars to Ball State -- Sellers, Jeremie Tyler, Tahjai Teague, Tayler Persons, Kyle Mallers, Zach Gunn, K.J. Walton and Brachen Hazen. All eight will be on the roster in 2017-18. Prior to Whitford s tenure, Ball State had never had more than four Indiana All-Stars on a single roster. Recruiting the State Ball State s roster this season features eight former Indiana All-Stars -- Tayler Persons (2014), Sean Sellers (2014), Jeremie Tyler (2014), Tahjai Teague (2015), K.J. Walton (2015), Brachen Hazen (2016), Kyle Mallers (2016) and Zach Gunn (2017). It is the most Indiana All-Stars the Cardinals have ever had on the roster at one time and the most on any college roster since Purdue had eight in 1998-99. Each year the Indiana All-Star Team features the top 13 high school seniors in the state. Ball State has had a total of 38 Indiana All-Stars throughout the years. The Cardinals had 19 from the 1985-2003 high school graduating classes, coinciding with the most successful period on the court in program history. They then signed only two over the next 10 years before cashing in on the 2014 class.
