For the first time in conference history, the 54-hole event will be contested on the Olympic Course at Gold Mountain Golf Club, which will play as a par-72, 7,115-yard track. The 11-team field will complete 18 holes on each of the three days, following a practice round on Thursday. The Aztecs, who have been idle since April 8, earned the No. 2 seed are slated to tee off with No. 4 Nevada in the second group on Friday, starting at 8:40 a.m. PT, while the pairings for the final two rounds with be based on team standings. A live scoring link courtesy of Golfstat will be available on GoAztecs. com. SDSU, which received a No. 48 national ranking in the latest Golfstat team index, will be competing at Gold Mountain Golf Club for the first time since the fall of 2014, when it tied for third at the University of Washington s Husky Invitational with a collective 9-over 873. PJ Samiere is the lone Aztec veteran from that event, where he tied for 27th at 7-over 223 during his freshman campaign. SDSU Lineup 2017-18 Avg. The combination comprised five-sixths of the Aztec delegation at the Western Intercollegiate, conducted earlier this month in Santa Cruz, Calif., where SDSU tied for third in the team standings. Anupansuebsai and Matesanz are the two newcomers for the Scarlet and Black at this year s MW Championship, while Samiere will be making his fourth straight appearance, joining Abercrombie, a twotime participant, while Norby is back in the mix for the second year in a row. Samiere and Abercrombie are the only Aztec golfers to have competed in all 11 events so far this season, while Norby and Anupansuebsai have played nine tournaments, followed by Matesanz, who has cracked the starting lineup on three occasions to go with a trio of individual appearances. In addition, Samiere (2), Abercrombie (8) enter the weekend occupying two of the top eight positions in the latest Golfstat Mountain West head-to-head rankings, followed by Anupansuebsai (20). The Competition Five of SDSU s opponents this weekend find themselves among the top 100 in the latest Golfstat rankings released April 18. Two-time defending champion UNLV is the highest rated team of the group, checking in at No. 24, followed by Colorado State (44), Nevada (61), Wyoming (79) and New Mexico (99). The Aztecs will also battle Fresno State (108), San José State (109), Boise State (124), Utah State (165) and Air Force (195). SDSU owns a 13-4-1 record in head-to-head results against six conference adversaries during the 2017-18 campaign, including unblemished marks against San José State (3-0), Nevada (3-0) and Fresno State (2-0). In addition, the Aztecs have maintained the upper hand against New Mexico (3-1-1) while splitting four encounters with Colorado State (2-2). Conversely, SDSU fell short in its only engagement with UNLV (0-1), while Air Force, Boise State, Utah State and Wyoming are the remaining MW schools the Scarlet and Black has not faced in a regularly scheduled tournament this year. Aztecs At The Mountain West Championship In the 19-year history of the Mountain West, San Diego State has won three team championships, capturing back-to-back titles in 2011 and 2012, followed by a thrilling victory in 2015. The Aztecs also tied for the top spot in 2009, but lost in a team playoff to TCU after rallying from a five-stroke deficit in regulation. In addition, SDSU has finished second seven times (2014, 2013, 2010, 2009, 2006, 2003, 2001), placed fourth on five occasions (2005, 2004, 2002, 2016, 2017), came in fifth twice (2007, 2000) and ended up in the seventh position once (2008). The Aztecs best individual finish was recorded in 2001 when John Lepak posted a 3-over 219 to win by one stroke at Sunriver Resort in Oregon. SDSU s Adam Porzak also tied for first place in regulation in 2007, but came up just short in a one-hole playoff loss to Robby Ormand of TCU, while Riccardo Michelini experienced a nearly identical fate in 2014, falling to New Mexico s Gavin Green on the first hole of a sudden-death playoff. In 2015, former All-American Xander Schauffele finished just two shots off the pace in second at 9-under 204 to set an SDSU record for lowest 54-hole score at a conference tournament. Last year, Gunn Yang tied for third after carding a 7-under 209, while Nahum Mendoza III tied for third in 2016 as well at 6-under 210. The Aztecs have fared routinely well on the individual leaderboard at the MW tournament, placing at least one player among the top four in each of the last 12 seasons and 17 times overall. Backspin: 2017 MW Championships San Diego State finished in fourth place at the 2017 Mountain West Championship after carding a 6-under-par 282 during the final round at OMNI Tucson National Golf Club in Tucson, Ariz. The Aztecs, who completed the 54-hole tournament at 15-under 849, led by as many as two shots on the back nine, but were unable to hold off UNLV (-18), which captured its second straight conference championship with a narrow one-shot victory over Colorado State (-17), while Boise State (-16) landed in the third spot on a crowded leaderboard. Gunn Yang was SDSU s No. 1 golfer, posting his highest collegiate finish with a tie for third place at 7-under 209 following a final-round 69. The Torrey Pines High alumnus caught fire after the turn where he recorded five of his six birdies on the day, including three straight on holes 12-14. After another successful drain at No. 16, which put him into a tie for the individual lead, Yang finished with a par and a triple-bogey to drop out of contention. Despite the stumble, Yang logged his lowest three-round total of the season, finishing in a three-way tie for third with Ryan Wallen of

Elsewhere, Nahum Mendoza III recorded the Aztecs biggest gain of the day, vaulting 13 places into a tie for 28th at 2-over 218 after matching Yang with a 69. The SDSU senior sank four birdies against one bogey to shave 10 strokes off his score from the previous round. PJ Samiere also displayed upward mobility, climbing seven notches into the 14th position at 2-under 214 following a final-round 70. The Aztec junior played spot-free golf for the first 13 holes, sinking four birdies, including back-to-back drains at No. 10 and No. 11. However, bogeys on the 14th and 17th greens prevented a steeper ascent. Conversely, Trevor Norby lost ground on the leaderboard, slipping seven places into a tie for 22nd at 1-over 217. The SDSU redshirt freshman carded four birdies of his own; however, three bogeys on the front nine following a double on the par-4 No. 1 proved too much to overcome. Rounding out the SDSU starting lineup was Blake Abercrombie, who tumbled 13 places into a tie for 28th with Mendoza after shooting a final-round 75. The Aztec junior was 2-over for the day after making a double-bogey on the par-5 10th, before rebounding with four consecutive pars and a birdie on the par-5, 610-yard No. 16. However, a pair of ill-timed bogeys on the final two holes stymied his momentum. A Look At the Course Located approximately 60 miles west of Seattle on Washington s Olympic Peninsula, the Olympic Course at Gold Mountain Club has garnered a host of awards since opening in 1996. In 2006, Golf Digest gave the course a 4.5-star rating in the publication s seventh edition of Best Places to Play. The magazine also voted it the second-best value in the United States in 2005 behind Bethpage Black on New York s Long Island. Owned by the city of Bremerton, the Olympic Course at Gold Mountain Golf Club was designed by John Harbottle III of Tacoma, Wash., and has served as the host course for NCAA regional championships in 2008 and 2015, the 2011 U.S. Junior Amateur, the 2007 Washington State Amateur, the 2006 U.S. Amateur Public Links, U.S. Open Section qualifying, as well as several editions of the Husky Invitational. Mountain West History 101 A total of six schools have won at least one Mountain West title with three, New Mexico, San Diego State and UNLV claiming consecutive championships. The Lobos captured four straight crowns from 2003-06 before earning the top prize in 2013 and 2014, while the Aztecs emerged triumphant in 2011 and 2012, followed by another conquest in 2015. UNLV (2000, 2002, 2016, 2017) became a four-time winner a year ago after taking home its second consecutive trophy, while Colorado State (2008, 2010) and former member Brigham Young (2001, 2007) each earned a pair of titles. In addition, TCU came away with its lone championship as a MW affiliate in 2009 when it edged SDSU in a team playoff. Seven different schools have had a player win the individual title, including SDSU (2001), UNLV (2000, 2004, 2008, 2011, 2013, 2015), New Mexico (2003, 2009, 2014), Colorado State (2002, 2010), Boise State (2017), Fresno State (2016), TCU (2007) and BYU (2005). The inaugural MW Championships took place on the Nicklaus Tournament Course at the PGA WEST complex in La Quinta, Calif., before moving to the Crosswater Course at Sunriver Resort in Sunriver, Ore., for six consecutive seasons from 2001-06. The conference tournament just completed a lengthy 11-year run from 2007-2017 in Arizona on the Catalina Course at the OMNI Tucson National Resort. 2017-18 Highlights Forced to compensate for the loss of three-time all-mountain West selection and 2016 third-team All-American Nahum Mendoza III, San Diego State witnessed a transition year during the 2017-18 campaign, as four freshmen made at least two varsity starts. Despite the influx of youth, the Aztecs produced a moderately successful season, recording top-10 finishes in 10 of 11 tournaments, including four in the top five. San Diego State endured a busy fall schedule that featured five events, highlighted by a second-place finish last October at the Warrior Princeville Makai Invitational in Kauai, Hawaii. The Aztecs shot a 47-under 817 for the tournament, marking the second-lowest 54-hole score in program history. Individually, SDSU boasted three top 15 finishers during its island adventure, including Blake Abercrombie, who tied for the sixth spot with a career-low 16-under 200, highlighted by a collegiate-best 65 in the opening round. In addition, Trevor Norby posted his highest placement in a Scarlet and Black uniform, tying for eighth at 12-under 204. The San Marcos High alumnus shot a 9-under 63 in the final round, which marked the Aztecs lowest 18-hole total since Alex Kang fired a 9-under 62 at the Alister MacKenzie Invitational in 2010. In addition, PJ Samiere tied for 13th at 9-under 207 in the return to his home state, including a second-round 65. Earlier, Samiere finished a solo fourth at the William H. Tucker Intercollegiate in Albuquerque, N.M., before landing in the fifth spot at the Alister MacKenzie Invitational in Fairfax, Calif., where he propelled SDSU to a fourth-place standing. The Aztec senior shot a season-best 12-under 201 on rounds of 66-66-69. SDSU struggled with inconsistency during the spring slate, but still managed a fourth-place finish at the Southwestern Invitational in late February at North Ranch Country Club in Westlake Village, Calif., followed by a third-place tie at the Western Intercollegiate earlier this month in Santa Cruz, Calif. For the season, Samiere leads the Scarlet and Black with a 71.09 scoring average, which ranks fifth in the Mountain West, to go with five top-10 placements. The reigning California State Amateur champion tops the the squad with 19 rounds at or below par and has completed a team-leading 13 in the 60s. At the Western Intercollegiate, Samiere tied the tournament record with a 7-under 63 during the second round en route to a sixth-place tie on the leaderboard. For his efforts, the Kailua, Hawaii, native garnered Mountain West Men s Golfer of the Week accolades on April 12. Puwit Anupansuebsai led all Aztec freshmen with a 73.38 stroke average in nine events, which ranked fourth on the squad. He was SDSU s No. 1 finisher at the Arizona Intercollegiate (T-28th) and the K-State Bighorn Invitational (T-25th). A product of Anaheim Discovery Christian School, Anupansuebsai tied for 11th at the Western Intercollegiate, highlighted by a second-round 66. Just A Chip Shot Away The winner of this week s Mountain West Championship earns an automatic bid to the NCAA regional tournament, slated for May 14-16 across six different locations. The two nearest potential regional sites for SDSU are Stockton, Calif. and Norman, Okla., while Bryan Texas, Kissimmee, Fla., Columbus, Ohio, and Raleigh, N.C., are also possible destinations for the Aztecs. In all, 81 teams and 45 individuals not on those squads will be divided up among the six regional tournaments. The participants will be selected by the NCAA men s golf committee and are scheduled to be announced on Thursday, May 2, at 5:30 p.m. ET (29 a.m. PT) on The Golf Channel. A total of 30 schools and two individuals (not on those qualifying teams) will advance to the NCAA championships, May 25-30, at Karsten Creek Golf Course in Stillwater, Okla. The Aztecs have made the national championships on 24 occasions in school history, including eight times (1999, 2003, 2005, 2008, 2011, 2012, 2015, 2016) since the regional format made its debut. Head Coach Ryan Donovan Ryan Donovan is in his 15th season at the helm of the SDSU men s golf program after serving as an assistant in 2003. Since taking the reins, he has directed the Aztecs to 30 tournament titles and six NCAA national championship appearances. In 2011, 2012 and 2015, he received Mountain West Coach of the Year honors and was named a finalist for the Dave Williams Award, which is handed out annually to the national coach of the year in Division I men s golf. Donovan was also was tabbed the Eaton Golf Pride West Region Division I Men s Coach of the Year by the GCAA following the 2010-11 campaign. A native of Yorba Linda, Calif., Donovan was a four-year member of the Aztec golf squad before graduating in 2001.
