For the 11th consecutive season, the 54-hole event will be contested on the Catalina Course at the OMNI Tucson National Golf Club, which will play as a par-72, 7,194-yard track. The 11-team field will complete 18 holes on each of the three days, following a practice round on Thursday. The Aztecs, who have been idle since April 9, earned the No. 2 seed are slated to tee off with No. 1 UNLV in the first group on Friday, starting at 7 a.m. PT, while the pairings for the final two rounds with be based on team standings. A live scoring link courtesy of Golfstat will be available on GoAztecs. com. SDSU, which received a No. 36 national ranking in the latest Golfstat team index, will be traveling to Tucson without having played the Catalina Course in a regular-season tournament prior to the MW Championship for just the second time since the 2010-11 campaign. The combination led the Aztecs to a team title at the Saint Mary s Invitational, held Oct. 24-26 in Pebble Beach, Calif., and comprised five-sixths of the SDSU delegation at the Western Intercollegiate, conducted earlier this month in Santa Cruz, Calif. Norby and Yang are the two newcomers for the Scarlet and Black at this year s MW Championship, while Mendoza will be making his fourth straight appearance, joining Samiere, a three-time participant, while Abercrombie is back in the mix for the second year in a row. Samiere, Abercrombie and Mendoza are the only Aztec golfers to have competed in all 10 events so far this season, while Yang has played seven tournaments, followed by Norby, who has cracked the starting lineup on three occasions to go with a pair of individual appearances. In addition, Samiere (4), Abercrombie (5) and Mendoza (5) enter the weekend occupying three of the top seven positions in the latest Golfstat Mountain West head-to-head rankings, followed by Yang (14) and Norby (24). The Competition Four of SDSU s opponents this weekend find themselves among the top 100 in the latest Golfstat rankings released April 18. UNLV is the highest rated team of the group, checking in at No. 16, followed by New Mexico (45), Colorado State (80) and Nevada (92). The Aztecs will also battle Nevada (135), Utah State (141), San José State (166), Boise State (199) and Air Force (210). SDSU owns a 14-2-1 record in head-to-head results against nine conference adversaries during the 2016-17 campaign, including unblemished marks against Fresno State (3-0), San José State (3-0), Colorado State (2-0), Boise State (1-0), Nevada (1-0) and Wyoming (1-0). In addition, the Aztecs have maintained the upper hand against New Mexico (2-1-1) while splitting two encounters with UNLV (1-1). Air Force is the lone MW school the Scarlet and Black has not faced in a regularly scheduled tournament this year. Twelve of the top individual finishers return from last season s conference championship, including medalist Trevor Clayton of Fresno State, runner-up Corey Eddings of Nevada and the Aztecs own Nahum Mendoza III (-6), who tied for third. Aztecs At The Mountain West Championship In the 18-year history of the Mountain West, San Diego State has won three team championships, capturing back-to-back titles in 2011 and 2012, followed by a thrilling victory in 2015. The Aztecs also tied for the top spot in 2009, but lost in a team playoff to TCU after rallying from a five-stroke deficit in regulation. In addition, SDSU has finished second seven times (2014, 2013, 2010, 2009, 2006, 2003, 2001), placed fourth on four occasions (2005, 2004, 2002, 2016), came in fifth twice (2007, 2000) and ended up in the seventh position once (2008). The Aztecs best individual finish was recorded in 2001 when John Lepak posted a 3-over 219 to win by one stroke at Sunriver Resort in Oregon. SDSU s Adam Porzak also tied for first place in regulation in 2007, but came up just short in a one-hole playoff loss to Robby Ormand of TCU, while Riccardo Michelini experienced a nearly identical fate in 2014, falling to New Mexico s Gavin Green on the first hole of a sudden-death playoff. In 2015, former All-American Xander Schauffele finished just two shots off the pace in second at 9-under 204 to set an SDSU record for lowest 54-hole score at a conference tournament, while Nahum Mendoza III tied for third last season at 6-under 210. The Aztecs have fared routinely well on the individual leaderboard at the MW tournament, placing at least one player among the top four in each of the last 11 seasons and 16 times overall. Backspin: 2016 MW Championships Nahum Mendoza III finished in a tie for third place at the 2016 Mountain West Championship after firing a 5-under-par 67 to lead San Diego State during the final round at OMNI Tucson National Golf Club. As a team, SDSU came up short in its bid for a second straight conference title, completing the 54-hole tournament in a tie fourth with Colorado State at 4-under 860. Despite shaving four strokes off their second-round total with an even-par 288, the Aztecs were unable to make a move in the standings, finishing 14 shots behind champion UNLV (-18), while New Mexico (-15) landed in the runner-up spot ahead of third-place Fresno State (-5) on the par-72, 7,194-yard Catalina Course. Individually, Mendoza vaulted 14 spots on the leaderboard after matching his lowest single-round card in three MW tournament appearances, highlighted by four birdies to go with an eagle on the par-5, 511-yard No. 10. With his effort, the SDSU junior finished just three shots of the pace, along with Sam Kim of New Mexico and UNLV s Zane Thomas, as Trevor Clayton of Fresno State (-9) took home medalist honors, while Nevada s 36-hole leader Corey Eddings (-7) slipped into second. In addition, Mendoza completed his fourth top-five placement of the spring and sixth of his career. The Aztecs Riccardo Michelini also saved his best for last, climbing six places into a four-way tie for 11th at 3-under 213 on the strength of a final-round 70. The SDSU senior captain offset four bogeys with a team-high six birdies, including an impressive conversion on the par-4,

The 55-player field recorded just 11 birdies on the aforementioned green for the entire weekend. PJ Samiere was the only other Aztec starter to complete the MW Championship in red figures, landing in a tie for 20th at 1-under 215 after firing a 74. Despite shooting 2-under over his final 11 holes, the SDSU sophomore was plagued by rough stretch on the front, suffering two bogeys as well as a triple on the par-3 No. 4 to tumble out of the eighth position. Ryann Ree also lost ground on the leaderboard, slipping seven places into a tie for 43rd at 9-over 225 after logging a 77. The Aztec senior countered two bogeys with four birdies and eight pars; however, two doubles and an untimely triple on No. 18 precipitated his drop. Rounding out the Scarlet and Black delegation was Blake Abercrombie, who posted his second consecutive 80 to complete his first-ever conference championship in 52nd at 15-over 231. The SDSU sophomore shot 1-under after the turn, highlighted by a birdie on the par-5 10th; however, two double-bogeys and a triple on the front proved too much to overcome. A Look At the Course For the 11th straight year, the Mountain West Championship will be held on the Catalina Course at the OMNI Tucson National Golf Resort & Spa. Designed by Robert Van Hagge and Bruce Devlin, the Catalina Course is known for its magnificent views, traditional parkland-style layout and tree-lined fairways. Nestled in the foothills of the Santa Catalina Mountains, the course also includes eight sparkling lakes and 80 bunkers, while the 18th hole is considered to be one of the finest and most challenging finishing holes on the PGA Tour. Home to over 30 PGA events, including the prestigious Chrysler Classic of Tucson from 1997-2006, as well as several NCAA tournaments, the Tucson National has been selected as one of Golf Digest magazine s 75 Best Golf Resorts in North America. Mountain West History 101 A total of six schools have won at least one Mountain West title with just two, New Mexico and San Diego State, claiming consecutive championships. The Lobos captured four straight crowns from 2003-06 before earning the top prize in 2013 and 2014, while the Aztecs emerged triumphant in 2011 and 2012, followed by another conquest in 2015. UNLV (2000, 2002, 2016) became a three-time winner a year ago, while Colorado State (2008, 2010) and former member Brigham Young (2001, 2007) each earned a pair of titles. In addition, TCU came away with its lone championship as a MW affiliate in 2009 when it edged SDSU in a team playoff. Six different schools have had a player win the individual title, including SDSU (2001), UNLV (2000, 2004, 2008, 2011, 2013, 2015), New Mexico (2003, 2009, 2014), Colorado State (2002, 2010), Fresno State (2016), BYU (2005) and TCU (2007). The inaugural MW Championships took place on the Nicklaus Tournament Course at the PGA WEST complex in La Quinta, Calif., before moving to the Crosswater Course at Sunriver Resort in Sunriver, Ore., for six straight years from 2001-06. The tournament has since been played in Arizona on the Catalina Course at the OMNI Tucson National Resort. 2016-17 Highlights Forced to compensate for the loss of All-American Ryann Ree as well as team captain and All-West Region performer Riccardo Michelini, San Diego State also weathered some nagging injuries in 2016-17 to produce yet another successful campaign. The Aztecs have recorded two tournament victories thus far to go with five additional top-10 placements, while four different golfers have led the team through 10 events. San Diego State traveled to the Land of 10,000 Lakes for its season opener last September, finishing second at the University of Minnesota s Gopher Invitational in suburban Minneapolis. The Aztecs were paced by Nahum Mendoza III and Blake Abercrombie, who tied for seventh, while Gunn Yang landed in the 11th spot. SDSU built upon its near miss two weeks later in New Mexico, winning the William H. Tucker Intercollegiate with a collective 1-under 863. PJ Samiere logged his highest collegiate placement, finishing two shots off the pace in the runner-up position at 4-under 212, while Abercrombie wound up in the third position. The Aztecs continued their fall schedule in northern California at the Alister MacKenzie Invitational, where Mendoza shot a career-best 13-under 200 to tie for fourth on the individual leaderboard. With his total, the reigning MW Men s Golfer of the Year tied for seventh on the program s all-time list for lowest 54-hole score. In addition, Samiere matched his collegiate-low for 18 holes with a 64 in round one, which is tied for fourth in program history. After tying for sixth at the aforementioned Bay Area tournament, SDSU successfully defended its team title in late October at the Saint Mary s Invitational in Pebble Beach, Calif. The Aztecs sat in ninth place after 18 holes, before storming back in the final two rounds, where they shot a combined 14-under to capture the crown. The Scarlet and Black boasted three players in the individual top 10, including Samiere, who came through with another runner-up performance, highlighted by consecutive 67s, while Yang finished a solo fourth, followed by Mendoza, who tied for sixth. SDSU struggled with inconsistency during the spring slate, but still managed four top-10 team finishes, as well as some notable individual performances, including Mendoza, who tied for third at The Prestige at PGA WEST in February, helping the Aztecs to sixthplace tie in the team standings at the aptly named tournament. In March, Abercrombie matched his career-best finish with a second-place tie at the Lamkin San Diego Classic, where he shot a 6-under 210 in SDSU s lone home tournament of the season. For his efforts, the Rocklin, Calif., native was named Mountain West Men s Golfer of the Week. Samiere (T-11th) and Mendoza (T-16th) also cracked the top 20 on the leaderboard, helping the Scarlet and Black tie for fifth as a team. Two weeks later at the Oregon Duck Invitational, Abercrombie and Yang tied for the 10th spot individually, propelling the Aztecs to a fourth-place standing, their highest finish of the spring. For the season, Samiere leads the squad with 11 rounds below par, including six in the 60s, while Mendoza has posted red figures in 10 rounds. Head coach Ryan Donovan revealed SDSU s talented recruiting class last fall, with high school seniors Puwit Anupansuebsa(Nakhon Phanom, Thailand/Anaheim Discovery Christian School), Zihao Jin (Beijing, China/Rancho Bernardo HS), Ryan McCoy (Temecula, Calif./Great Oak HS) and Steve Sugimoto (San Diego, Calif./Rancho Bernardo HS) signing National Letters of Intent. All four players are slated to joining the Aztecs in time for the 2017-18 season. Just A Chip Shot Away The winner of this week s Mountain West Championship earns an automatic bid to the NCAA regional tournament, slated for May 15-17 across six different locations. The two nearest potential regional sites for SDSU are Stanford, Calif. and Auburn, Wash., while West Lafayette, Ind., Austin Texas, Baton Rouge, La., and College Grove, Tenn., are also possible destinations for the Aztecs. In all, 81 teams and 45 individuals not on those squads will be divided up among the six regional tournaments. The participants will be selected by the NCAA men s golf committee and are scheduled to be announced on Thursday, May 4, at noon ET (9 a.m. PT) on The Golf Channel. A total of 30 schools and two individuals (not on those qualifying teams) will advance to the NCAA championships, May 26-31, at Rich Harvest Fams in Sugar Grove, Ill. The Aztecs have made the national championships on 24 occasions in school history, including eight times (1999, 2003, 2005, 2008, 2011, 2012, 2015, 2016) since the regional format made its debut. Head Coach Ryan Donovan Ryan Donovan is in his 14th season at the helm of the SDSU men s golf program after serving as an assistant in 2003. Since taking the reins, he has directed the Aztecs to 30 tournament titles and six NCAA national championship appearances. In 2011, 2012 and 2015, he received Mountain West Coach of the Year honors and was named a finalist for the Dave Williams Award, which is handed out annually to the national coach of the year in Division I men s golf. Donovan was also was tabbed the Eaton Golf Pride West Region Division I Men s Coach of the Year by the GCAA following the 2010-11 campaign. A native of Yorba Linda, Calif., Donovan was a four-year member of the Aztec golf squad before graduating in 2001.
