Right-hander Lance McCullers struck out five batters in five shutout innings, and third baseman Rio Ruiz went 2-for-4 with a two-run double to cap a threerun eighth inning that broke a 1-1 tie. Quad Cities has played error-free baseball the first two games, while the Cougars have comitted three errors in each of the first two games. FAST START IN OPENER FOR RIVER BANDITS: Shortstop Carlos Correa was 2-for-5 with a two-run double and RBI single in his Midwest League debut, and right-hander Vincent Velasquez pitched five innings of two-run ball in a 7-2 win at Kane County Thursday night. Left-hander Joe Bircher, the second member of the Quad Cities starting tandem, pitched four innings in his first career relief appearance and earned the save. TANDEM STARTING PITCHING IN THE ASTROS SYSTEM: The River Bandits, as well as the three other full-season affiliates of the Houston Astros, are beginning the season with tandem rotations. Each spot in the rotation includes a pair of pitchers, who will alternate pitching first and second in a game each time through the rotation. BANDITS OPEN SECOND AFFILIATION WITH HOUSTON ASTROS: The Quad Cities River Bandits and Houston Astros signed a two-year Player Development Contract in September to mark their second affiliation. Houston was the major league affiliate of the Quad City River Bandits from 1993 to 1998, when Billy Wagner, Johan Santana, Richard Hidalgo, Brad Lidge and Freddy Garcia each spent time in the Quad Cities. ABOUT THE ASTROS ORGANIZATION: In, the Astros minor league affiliates combined for the best overall record of any domestic minor league system. Two current Astros played in the Quad Cities when it was a Cardinals affiliate - Rick Ankeil (2005) and Brett Wallace (2008). AFFILIATION HISTORY IN THE MIDWEST LEAGUE: The Quad Cities franchise joined the Midwest League in 1960. In addition to the Astros, the major league affiliates include the Milwaukee (now Atlanta) Braves (1960-1961), Los Angeles and California Angels (1962-1978, 1985-1992), Chicago Cubs (1979-1984), Minnesota Twins (1999-2004) and St. Louis Cardinals (2005-). BANDITS ROSTER STACKED WITH TALENT: The River Bandits open the season with four of the top 15 Houston Astros prospects, according to Baseball America, including No. 1 overall pick Carlos Correa. Correa is the first No. 1 overall draft pick to play for the Quad Cities since Joe Mauer, the No. 1 overall pick by the Minnesota Twins in 2001, played in the Quad Cities in 2002. Correa is ranked by Baseball America as the No. 1 prospect in the Astros minor league system and the No. 13 prospect in all of baseball. The River Bandits roster also includes right-handed pitcher Lance McCullers (ranked Houston No. 4 prospect and No. 50 in baseball by Baseball America), infielder Rio Ruiz (No. 8), and right-hander Vincent Velasquez (No. 13).
