CALIFORNIA DEPT.OF PUBLIC HEALTH ENVIRONMENTAL MANAGEMENT BRANCH Marine Biotoxin Monitoring Report January 2018 Technical Report No. 18-10 INTRODUCTION: This report provides a summary of biotoxin activity for the month of January, 2018. Toxin concentration ranges are provided for the paralytic shellfish poisoning (PSP) toxins and for domoic acid (DA). Estimates are also provided for the distribution and relative abundance of Alexandrium, the dinoflagellate that produces PSP toxins, and Pseudo-nitzschia, the diatom that produces domoic acid. Summary information is also provided for any quarantine or health advisory in effect during the reporting period. Please note the following conventions for the phytoplankton and shellfish biotoxin distribution maps: (I) All estimates for phytoplankton relative abundance are qualitative, based on sampling Dinoflagellate species were common in January, an unusual occurrence, including this chain of two Alexandrium cells and Ceratium furca. effort and percent composition; (ii) All toxin data are for mussel samples, unless otherwise noted; (iii) All samples are assayed for PSP toxins; DA anal- yses are performed as needed (e.g., on the basis of detected blooms of the diatoms that produce DA); Volunteering to collect mussels helps our monitoring program and gives you an opportunity to explore tide pools like these along the Sonoma coast. (iv) Please refer to the appropriate figure key for an explanation of the symbols used on the maps. Northern California Summary: Paralytic Shellfish Poisoning Alexandrium increased significantly in distribution and relative abundance in January (Figure 1). This toxin-producing dinoflagellate was observed at numerous sites between Marin and Monterey counties. The relative abundance of Alexandrium was highest in samples from Bolinas Lagoon (January 31) and the Monterey Commercial Pier (January 23). PSP toxicity was detected in shellfish from several sampling sites in January (Figure 2). High toxin concentrations persisted throughout the month in rock scallop viscera samples from the Monterey Commercial Pier, reaching 946 µg/100g by January 30; the adductor muscle from this sample did not contain a detectable amount of toxin. Mussels sampled collected on the same day from this site also contained (Continued on page 2)

Page 2 January 2018 Technical Report No. 18-10 (Continued from page 1) PSP toxins above the alert level (134 µg/100 g). Low levels of PSP toxins were detected in mussels from Pillar Pt. (San Mateo County, January 29), the Santa Cruz Pier (January 24 and 31), and Point Joe (January 27). Domoic Acid Pseudo-nitzschia was observed at numerous sites along the northern California coast in January (Figure 1). The distribution of this diatom expanded compared to observations in December. The highest relative abundances were observed in outer Tomales Bay (January 28) and the Chimney Rock sentinel station (January 19). Domoic acid was not detected in any mussel or oyster samples analyzed in January. Razor clams from Del Norte and Humboldt County, however, continued to contain high concentrations of this toxin (Figure 2). Of the six clam meat samples collected from Crescent Beach (Del Norte County) on January 1, all contained domoic acid concentrations well above the alert level of 20 ppm, ranging from 140 to 280 ppm. Six additional clam meat samples were collected at this site on January 31 and all exceeded the alert level, ranging from 74 to 280 ppm. Page 4 January 2018 (Continued from page 2) from Clam Beach (Humboldt County) on January 2, with all exceeding the alert level. Toxin concentrations ranged from 70 to 210 ppm in these samples. Non-Toxic Species Dinoflagellates dominated the phytoplankton assemblage along the northern California coast between Marin and Monterey counties, an unusual occurrence for this time of year. Ceratium furca was common to abundant at several Marin sites and Prorocentrum micans was common inside Tomales Bay. Lingulodinium polyedrum was common to abundant at sites in Santa Cruz and Monterey counties. The diatoms Chaetoceros and Odontella were common inside Humboldt Bay. Southern California Summary: Paralytic Shellfish Poisoning: Alexandrium was observed at several locations in San Luis Obispo County in January (Figure 3). The relative abundance of Alexandrium increased significantly compared to observations in December. The highest rela(continued on page 5) The Marine Biotoxin Monitoring and Control Program, managed by the California Department of Public Health, is a state-wide effort involving a consortium of volunteer participants. The shellfish sampling and analysis element of this program is intended to provide an early warning of shellfish toxicity by routinely assessing coastal resources for the presence of paralytic shellfish poisoning (PSP) toxins and domoic acid. The Phytoplankton Monitoring Program is a state-wide effort designed to detect toxin producing species of phytoplankton in ocean water before they impact the public. The phytoplankton monitoring and observation effort can provide an advanced warning of a potential toxic bloom, allowing us to focus sampling efforts in the affected area before California's valuable shellfish resources or the public s health is threatened. Domoic Acid Pseudo-nitzschia was observed at sampling sites in each southern California county except Ventura during January (Figure 3). While the distribution was similar to observations in December, there was an increase in the relative abundance of this diatom at Ellwood Pier in Santa Barbara County and Imperial Beach Pier in southern San Diego County. The highest cell masses of Pseudo-nitzschia were observed in samples from Santa Monica Bay (January 11), Santa Monica Pier (January 31), and Ellwood Pier (January 27). Domoic acid was not detected in any bivalve shellfish samples analyzed in January (Figure 4). The diatom Chaetoceros was common along most of the southern California coast, while Thalassiosira was common at Goleta Pier and Guinardia was abundant at Bolsa Chica and common at Imperial Beach Pier. The dinoflagellate Lingulodinium polyedrum was common to abundant at multiple sites between San Luis Obispo and San Diego counties. Ceratium furca was common to abundant at several sampling stations between Los Angeles and Orange counties. QUARANTINES: On January 31 CDPH issued a health advisory warning consumers not to eat recreationally harvested mussels, clams or scallops from San Luis Obispo County because of dangerous levels of PSP toxins in mussels from this region. On January 26 CDPH lifted the health advisory for lobsters caught in state waters around the northeast end of Santa Cruz Island (Santa Barbara County) and on the south side of Anacapa Island (Ventura County). This advisory had been established on October 24 due to elevated levels of domoic acid in this region. Consumers of Washington clams, also known as butter clams (Saxidomus nuttalli), are cautioned to eat only the white meat. Washington clams can concentrate the PSP toxins in the viscera and in the dark parts of the siphon and can remain toxic for a long period of time. Persons taking scallops or clams, with the exception of razor clams, are advised to remove and discard the dark parts (i.e., the digestive organs or viscera). Razor clams (Siliqua patula) are an exception to this general guidance due to their ability to concen- (Continued on page 7)

PSP toxins can produce a tingling around the mouth and fingertips within a few minutes to a few hours after eating toxic shellfish. These symptoms can be followed by disturbed balance, lack of muscular coordination, slurred speech and difficulty swallowing. In severe poisonings, complete muscular paralysis and death from asphyxiation can occur. Symptoms of domoic acid poisoning can occur within 30 minutes to 24 hours after eating toxic seafood. In mild cases, symptoms of exposure to this nerve toxin may include vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal cramps, headache and dizziness. These symptoms disappear completely within several days. In severe cases, the victim may experience excessive bronchial secretions, difficulty breathing, confusion, disorientation, cardiovascular instability, seizures, permanent loss of short-term memory, coma and death. Any person experiencing any of these symptoms should seek immediate medical care. Consumers are also advised that neither cooking or freezing eliminates domoic acid or the PSP toxins from the shellfish tissue. These toxins may also accumulate in seafood species such as crab, lobster, and small finfish like sardines and anchovies.
