2019 UA Cycling: Santa Catalina Weekend General information Welcome! The UA Cycling Team and Sabino Cycles Racing Team are excited to offer the Santa Catalina Weekend for the 5 th year! Etiquette: These races are held in very public areas and there will be spectators present. Please be polite and respectful. You are representing our event, your team, and cycling in general. We want to leave a LASTING POSITIVE impression on our very gracious host communities and be welcomed back. No littering, no cursing, and ABSOLUTELY NO PUBLIC URINATION! We nearly lost our event for 2014 because someone used a resident s semi-truck as a pee spot- in view of their dining room windows while they ate breakfast. There is no excuse for public urination. Riders caught doing so will be fined, or disqualified, or both more than likely both. Centerline: The centerline rule will be strictly enforced in the road race. If no painted centerline exists, riders must keep to the right side of the road. If there is a double lane, riders must stay in the right lane. During the road race all roads will be open to traffic. The road race involves several out and back loops- fields will pass each other. Crossing the centerline endangers yourself AND the oncoming race. The risk is not worth it. If you are dropped from the main group, ride to the far right and no more than two abreast. This is the first warning, for everyone: CROSS THE CENTER LINE AND YOU WILL BE DISQUALIFIED Don t be the rider that makes our race go way because you rode over the center. Helmets: Helmets must be worn and secured at all times while riding a bicycle. Race Numbers: Numbers will be pinned on the right side for both days. Pin it lower and on the side. Kudos to rider 123 for doing it correctly.
2019 UA Cycling: Santa Catalina Weekend Combined Categories: During both events, several fields will be racing at the same time. We scheduled our events to avoid fields over taking each other. However, if this occurs, please move over and allow the passing field to move through. Do not mingle with the passing field or you will be disqualified. Wheel Support: There will be a wheel pit in the criterium by the finish line. Furthermore, there will be follow vehicles for each group in the road race- wheels in, wheels out. Schedule of Fees: Event & Division Until Thursday 01/31 @ 8:00 PM Friday 2/1 to Day of event Road Race Only (Saturday 2/2/2019) Juniors Age 9-18 $25 Collegiate Racer Elite & Masters $45 Criterium Only (Sunday 2/3/2019) Juniors Age 9-18 $15 Collegiate Racer $15 $15 Elite & Masters $35 Day of event $30 $30 $50 $30 $25 $45 No refunds after January 31! 2019 UA Cycling: Santa Catalina Weekend Prizes: Approximately $3,000 in cash prizes! See respective race day page for each day s payouts. Prize list may be increased if additional sponsors are found. Merchandise includes: Sabino Cycling gift cards, bags of Presta Coffee, boxes of R-Bars, Girl Scout Cookies, Tires, Glukos, UA swag, Race Proceeds: Our events serve as a fundraiser for the UA Cycling team. All proceeds from the events go directly to the UA Cycling Team, which enables the team to compete across the Southwest, attend Nationals Championships, promote races, and get more college students riding bicycles. Your participation directly impacts and improves cycling in the Southwest by allowing us to bring riders to your team s event! What happened to the old Oracle course? We transitioned to the out and back in 2017 because of the insurmountable costs associated with using AZ-77. Because it is a state highway, we were required to use AZ DPS officers to control traffic - at 1.5x the rate of Pinal Co. Deputies. There were also additional traffic control signage required such as two message boards placed 3 days prior to the event, and ADOT requires a $5 million dollar insurance policy to use their roads. All of this added up to more than $4,500 to use just that road. In 2016 we lost $3,400 on the road race- luckily the criterium covered the costs and we barely broke even. We felt we had raised entry fees to the highest we could go and for 2017 we could not take the risk of losing money. We are not professional event promoters- we are college students with full course loads, jobs, and a love for cycling. We put on the event in hopes of providing a great race experience and to raise money for our team. While we are always on the search for more sponsors for the event, at the present time we do not have the ability to source out the $4,500 needed to use AZ-77. No Omnium? We found over the previous three years the omnium format did not increase participation in the event but did increase workload on volunteers in terms of finding prizes, calculating omnium points, and delaying awards. So we re going back to just two great days of racing- a road race and crit!
