1979-80 FOOTBALL Coach Earl Perkins 1-7-1 The Blue Devils opened up with defending conference champions Rochester and were defeated 22-0. They outgained ACC 394 to 55 on offense. Austin took another one on the chin falling to Inver Hills 49-0. Inver Hills had 20 first downs to ACC s 11 and the Blue Devils had five turnovers. North Hennepin remained unbeaten as it handed Austin a 20-7 loss. Down thirteen at halftime, Austin scored its first touchdown of the year in the four quarter as halfback Mark Murphy nailed Steve Stalker for a 47 yard touchdown pass. Tom Clausen kicked the PAT and that s where the score ended. Tied 0-0 after one quarter with Normandale, ACC gave up 27 second quarter points and lost 47-9 to the Lions to go 0-4 on the season. ACC gained only 6 first downs. Willmar handed Austin their fifth straight loss with a 24-6 verdict over the Blue Devils. Austin s only score was on a five yard toss from QB Dean Swank to Dave Schulenberg. In their homecoming game, ACC tied Worthington 6-6 as both teams squandered excellent scoring opportunities. In the second quarter tied 0-0, Rod Wagner rumbled 63 yards to the one yard line where QB Gary White scored from one yard out to put ACC up 6-0. The score remained that until the fourth quarter where Worthington scored on a 10 yard scoring toss to tie the game. The PAT was wide left and the score remained tied 6-6. Wagner paced all runners with 139 yards on 22 carries. The Blue Devils defeated winless Lakewood CC 12-7 to earn their first victory of the season. Down 7-0 after the first half, ACC broke loose scoring 12 points in the third quarter as QB Gary White connected on a 12 yard scoring toss to Dave Schulenberg and nailed Charles Curren for a 29 yard TD. Both PAT were no good. Austin led 12-7 after three quarters and the score stood up for the Blue Devils first win. Austin dropped the fourth annual Pigskin Bowl, losing 21-14 to UM Waseca. The Blue Devils trailed 15-14 at halftime but could not put any points on the board. ACC lost its final game 29-16 to Anoka Ramsey ending the season 1-7-1. The Blue Devils were out rushed 259-89 but out passed Anoka Ramsey 104-35. Sophomores Patti Foss and Nancy Fossey led the team in spiking and serving. ACC placed 5 th out of 8 teams at the North Hennepin Invitational. The Blue Devils split with Hibbing, beat Itasca 2-0, then lost to North Hennepin. They defeated Rochester 2-1 for fifth place honors. ACC defeated NIACC once again 3-0. Linda Tapp led the team in scoring with 8 points. Austin came up with a couple wins beating Waseca 2-0 and Willmar 2-1. The Blue Devils came up with two more wins, edging Worthington 15-9, 5-15, 15-13 then blasting Waseca 15-5 and 15-6. The wins upped ACC record to 9-3-1. Austin lost to Bethany Lutheran in five games and dropped to 9-4-1. ACC defeated Lakewood CC 3-0 in conference action. Patti Foss headed the Blue Devils with 15 spikes. Austin came up with two more wins, beating Willmar 2-1 and Rochester 2-1. Foss, Fossey, and Kathy Upcraft were cited by Coach Moen as being outstanding spikers. The wins improved ACC to 12-4-1. The Blue Devils ended the regular season 6-4 in conference action by splitting with Anoka Ramsey (won 2-0) and Bethany Lutheran (lost 2-0). With the split they ended 13-5-1 on the regular season. ACC won their first two matches in the Southern Division play-offs defeating Waseca 2-0 and beating southern division champions Rochester 15-11 and 15-11. In the second
day of competition, ACC captured the Southern Division Championship, defeating Worthington 15-11, 15-11 and then upending Rochester again 16-14, 9-15, 15-5 to take the championship. The state championship was played in Grand Rapids, MN. ACC advanced to the championship round after compiling a 4-2 record in pool play. That record gave them second which was won by North Hennepin who had a 5-1 record. Austin split with Hibbing, split with North Hennepin, and swept two from Fergus Falls 15-9 and 15-3. Austin lost to Vermilion in the semifinal round but defeated North Hennepin 15-1, 15-12, 9-15, 15-12 to capture third place in the MCCWAA state tournament. Returning are; Steve Stalker, Phil Hanke, Lance Pogones, Brian Barnett, and Paul Miller. ACC lost its opener 70-60 to Lakewood CC. Fouls plagued Austin in the loss. Charles Curren from Keytesville, Mo. led the Blue Devils in scoring with 26 points. Mike Swanson added 19 in defeat. Waldorf defeated Austin 61-59 after ACC had led the entire game up to the two minute mark. Curren again led the team with 24 points. Austin dropped to 0-3 after losing to Metropolitan CC 71-63. Curren scored 19 points while teammate Dale Bjorklund chipped in with 16 points. The Blue Devils dropped their fourth consecutive game dropping a 74-66 decision to WWTI. Charles Curren scored 26 points to top scoring honors. ACC played great defense and held a much taller Inver Hills team to 52 points but managed only 45 them-selves and lost 52-45 to drop to 0-5. Curren had 25 points in the loss. ACC defeated Southwest Wisconsin Tech 75-67 for their first win of the season. Curren had 20 and Bjorklund added 18 while guard Paul Miller chipped in with 13 points. Austin defeated Brainerd 81-66 but lost to North Hennepin 89-73 in the championship game of the North Hennepin tournament. With the weekend split, Austin is now 2-6 overall. Curren had 14 and 22 respectively in the two games to lead the Blue Devils in scoring. In the conference opener, ACC had their best performance of the season and beat Worthington 69-65. Austin outscored Worthington 22-12 down the stretch to take the win. Charles Curren had 28 to lead all scorers. ACC lost to UM Waseca 82-62 to drop to 1-1 in league play. Austin had four players in double figures but Curren was held to a season low 14 points. ACC committed 43 turnovers and lost 80-58 to Bethany Lutheran. Curren
had 24 points and Dale Bjorklund had 10 points and five blocked shots. ACC fell to Willmar 91-83 in conference action. Paul Miller had his best game of the year with 21 while teammate Charles Curren led with 25. Charles Curren was his usual self scoring 28 points but Rochester handed ACC a 75-53 loss to drop them to 1-4 in league and 3-10 overall. Austin beat Worthington 77-72 for its second conference win and handed Worthington its second conference loss, both to the Blue Devils. Curren scored 23 points and hauled down 13 rebounds in the victory. Charles Curren hit for a season high 35 points but to no avail his Blue Devils lost 79-64 to UM Waseca. Bethany blitzed ACC 82-69 in conference action to drop Austin to 2-6 in league and 4-12 overall. Curren had 16 but eight points below his average, followed by Paul Miller (14), Dave Sabyan (12), Dale Bjorklund (11) and Lance Pogones (10). ACC lost to a tall Willmar squad 85-62 to drop to 2-8 in league and 4-13 overall. Curren had 22 points and 14 rebounds to lead the way. Austin closed out its season dropping a 101-70 contest to Rochester. Charles Curren was held to seven points. (Curren needed 25 points to win the conference scoring title). He fouled out with 11:00 to go in the game. Paul Miller had 22 followed by Dale Bjorklund with 12 points to lead the Blue Devils. ACC finished 4-14 on the year. Charles Curren earned All-Conference and All-State honors and 2 nd team All-Region XIII. He averaged 22.6 ppg and 14 RB per game. Curren finished 8 th all-time on the scoring list for one season with 407 points. Freshman Linda Tapp poured in 20 points to lead ACC over Normandale 92-42. Patti Foss added 16 and Sherri Hilmer 15. Austin ripped Rochester 68-39 to win the Rochester Invitational. Karol Hansen led the way with 14 points but it was the defense that has impressed Coach
Moen so far, holding opponents to 42 and 39 points in the first two games. ACC squeaked out a 67-66 win over Inver Hills to go 3-0 on the young season. Foss led the way with 23 points and 21 rebounds. Austin defeated North Hennepin 50-38 in its own invitational. Kathy Upcraft led the way with 14 points. ACC cages won their own invitational defeating Anoka Ramsey 67-34. Eleven of twelve players scored and Linda Tapp had 12 to lead the way. Austin suffered its first loss of the season, losing 78-72 to Golden Valley. ACC dropped to a season record 6-1. Tapp had 20, Julie Anderson added 17 and Sheri Bosshart chipped in with 12. Austin opened up the conference with a 67-56 win over defending state champion Worthington. Foss led ACC with 19 points while Tapp added 14. Austin blasted UM Waseca 76-43 to improve to 2-0 in league play. Linda Tapp had 18 followed closely by Bosshart with 17 and Foss s 16 points. Austin beat Bethany (8-2) 67-56 in what Coach Vel Moen said was the team s best performance of the year. Sherri Bosshart scored all of her 15 points in the second half to lead them to victory. Tapp had 16 points and eleven steals in the win. Sherri Bosshart put her best performance of the year as ACC defeated Willmar 59-43. Now 4-0 in conference and 10-1 overall, Bosshart made 9 of 10 from the field for 18 points. Austin and Rochester met tied with 4-0 records, but ACC left standing alone on top as they defeated the Yellowjackets 72-64. Patti Foss led them in scoring with 16 points and an outstanding defensive game. ACC defeated Worthington 66-50 to remain on top of the standings at 6-0. Foss (21) and Tapp(17) led them in scoring. Austin blasted UM Waseca 71-37 to up their record to 12-1 and 7-0 in conference. Sherri Bosshart had 16 points to lead the team in scoring. ACC dropped its first conference game losing 71-60 to Bethany Lutheran. Bosshart and Foss were held to 22 combined points. Julie Anderson had 12 points and nine assists in the loss. Four players had double figures as ACC defeated Normandale 76-54. The win improves Austin to 14-2 overall. Karol Hansen and Kathy Upcraft each had 16 points. Austin dropped its second conference game losing 59-55 to Willmar. The loss drops them to 7-2 in the conference and 14-3 overall. Bosshart scored 25 points in the first half and ended with 29 but it was not enough to secure the win. Sheri Bosshart came up big again, this time with 26 points, 12 blocked shots and six steals to help her team beat Inver Hills 56-50. The ACC women finally claimed the division championship with an 8-2 record, defeating Rochester 49-48. Rochester got off three shots in the last nine seconds but could not connect and ACC sealed the win. Austin finishes the regular season 16-3. Both teams advance to the state tournament. In the first round, ACC routed Mesabi CC 83-29. Cindy Bosshart led them with 21 points, followed by Linda Tapp with 15. ACC had 25 steals in the game. The Blue Devils edged Golden Valley 62-60 to advance to the state championship game. Free throws were the difference as ACC outscored Golden Valley 18-8 on the foul line. Bosshart had 19 to lead the way while Kathy Upcraft added 15. The Blue Devils have gone to the state tournament five of the six years and are
searching for their first state championship. Austin faced Inver Hills for the third time, winning the first two contests but would be denied their first ever state championship as Inver Hills defeated ACC 62-54. It was the third time Austin has finished runner-up in the state and they finished third last year. Austin had 21 turnovers and that proved costly. Sherri Bosshart led the team again with 17 points and 8 rebounds. A key moment in the game occurred when Linda Tapp fouled out in the fourth quarter. Austin ended the season 19-4. Sherri Bosshart named to the All- State and All-Region XIII (1 st team). We will be the favorites said Ball as all six returnees started for ACC their freshmen year. The Lady Blue Devils started the season with two wins, 7-5 and 2-1 over Anoka Ramsey. Lori Bergstrom pitched a four hitter in game one and Julie Anderson got the win in game two with a six hitter. ACC recorded two more wins, this time defeating Normandale 7-6 and 8-5. Kathy Upcraft collected three hits and Cheryl Hickey had two. Bergstrom threw a two hitter for the win. In the nightcap, Hickey again had two hits and Anderson recorded the mound victory. Austin Community College won its own invitational tournament by winning three games and remaining undefeated on the season (7-0). ACC made it eight consecutive wins to start the season with a 14-0 win over Willmar but in the second game they lost 9-5, ending their streak at eight games. Lori Bergstrom pitched the shutout for her fifth straight win without a loss (5-0) while Karol Hansen collected three hits and Hickey had a three run triple. In game two, Julie Anderson took the mound loss while Julie Schreiber had three hits. The Lady Blue Devils upped their record to 10-1 with two ten run rule victories, 16-1 and 15-1 over Waseca. Bergstrom (6-0) and Anderson (4-1) supplied the pitching wins while Kathy Upcraft banged out three hits including a home run. ACC won three games at the Waseca Invitational in the first day of competition, defeating Anoka Ramsey 4-3, Lakewood 13-0, and Inver Hills 2-0. Bergstrom was the winning pitcher in game one and three while Anderson got the win in the second contest. On day two of the tournament, Austin defeated Metropolitan CC 12-2 as Bergstrom (9-0) remained undefeated on the mound. After winning six straight games, ACC lost 8-6 to Anoka Ramsey and ended the tournament 4-1 and 14-2 overall. Austin split its next doubleheader, winning 14-4 over Inver Hills and losing the nightcap 9-3. In game one, Kathy Upcraft had three hits and 2 RBI while Lori Bergstrom pitched a five hitter for the win. Austin dropped its second
conference game in the nightcap. Julie Anderson took the mound loss (5-3) while Karol Hansen had 4 hits in the doubleheader. ACC took a pair from Rochester (no scores), upping their conference mark to 8-2 and overall record 17-3. Loir Bergstrom started game but took a line drive in the cheek so Anderson came on in relief and got the win in game one and game two. In game one, LuAnn Valek had two hits including a homerun and Linda Tapp recorded two hits and 3 RBI. Valek hit a three run homerun in game two while Julie Anderson and Mary Satern each had three hits. In a southern division playoff to decide who goes to the state tournament, ACC belted Willmar 8-1 to up their record to 18-3. Bergstrom was back on the hill and pitched a brilliant game to record her eleventh victory without a loss. Anderson (3 hits) and Upcraft (2 hits) supplied the power at the plate. The Lady Blue Devils earned a trip to the Regional tournament by defeating Inver Hills 17-4. ACC had 10 hits to go along with 13 walks. Lori Bergstrom scattered six hits to remain undefeated (12-0). Austin Community College won three games at the Region XIII tournament and was crowned champions as they defeated Itasca CC 9-5, Anoka Ramsey 1-0, and Anoka Ramsey again 9-6 in the championship game. The title earned ACC a trip to the Valley Park, Missouri to the NJCAA national softball championships. Lori Bergstrom recorded all three mound victories and in the second game she threw a one hit shutout over Anoka Ramsey. Coach Dan Ball said his team played excellent defense the entire tournament (turning 5 double plays). Austin upped its season record to 23-3. ACC continued its banner year by winning the state tournament, upending North Hennepin 11-0, defeating Brainerd 3-2 and claiming the championship in the second day of competition. In the fist round of the NJCAA Women s Softball Tournament, ACC lost to Illinois Central 4-0. The Illinois team was rated #1 in the country held Austin (#5 in the country) to one hit in the contest. Lori Bergstrom suffered her first mound loss of the season (20-1). Facing elimination, Austin Community College came up with a pair of wins to remain in the running. In the first game, ACC eliminated Morris, N.J. 7-6 by scoring six runs in the seventh inning. A three run triple by Kathy Upcraft tied the game at 6-6 and Jan Gabrielson knocked in the winning run with a RBI to score Upcraft. In the second victory of the day, Austin came back with a 2-1 win over Meramec, Mo., the host school. Bergstrom gave up only one hit (a bunt single) while Julie Anderson and Cheryl Hickey each had two hits. ACC was eliminated 2-0 to Pima, Ariz. and finished fourth in the country and finished 28-5 for the season. Bergstrom took the mound loss and completed her year 22-2. Austin was awarded the Glynn E. Clark Sportsmanship Award for the NJCAA national tournament. Lori Bergstrom, LuAnn Valek and Julie Anderson earned All-Conference, All-State, and All-Region. Bergstrom was named to the All-American second team.

ACC had only five hits in the two games. In the second contest that went only five innings, Jim Miller and Kevin Kinstler combined on a no-hitter. Austin dropped to 1-3 on the young season after losing 12-0 and 4-2 to Normandale. ACC was one hit the first game and Paul Woodside collected two hits in game two. The Blue Devils dropped to 1-5 as they lost 10-1 and 11-3 to the Mankato State JV team. Austin committed 13 errors and collected only five hits in the doubleheader. Austin was swept by Rochester 6-5 and 2-1 in conference action. In the first game ACC left 14 runners stranded and in the nightcap, Jim Miller went the distance, scattering seven hits and suffering the loss. Austin committed five errors in the second game. Austin dropped a 15-6 loss to the Winona JV squad and in the nightcap tied 7-7 after five innings. Due to a conflict in the field scheduling the game had to be called. Winona scored nine runs in the first inning of game one while ACC contributed with six errors. Kevin Kinstler had a bases loaded double and Bob Anderson collected three hits in the nightcap. Austin dropped to 1-8 on the season. Inver Hills defeated Austin 7-4 and 3-2 to drop ACC to 0-6 in the league and 1-10 on the season. Jim Miller pitched a two hit complete game in the second contest, striking out eight and dropping his E.R.A. to 1.19 in 29 and 1/3 innings. Mankato State JV s made it eleven losses in a row by dumping ACC 8-2 and 8-5. Austin collected only 2 hits in the opener. Normandale kept Austin winless in the league as the Lions defeated ACC 2-1 and 9-1. The Blue Devils (0-8 in league) had only eight hits in the two games and committed 6 errors. Austin lost its 14 th and 15 th consecutive games as Rochester upended them 3-2 and 4-1. ACC is hitting.190 after seventeen games and stand 1-16 on the year. The Blue Devils snapped their losing streak by defeating WWTI 6-4 and then lost 5-4 in the nightcap. In the victory, Bryan Schwab had a big two run triple in the sixth inning for the win. Steve Stalker pitched a 5- hit complete game for the win. Inver Hills swept ACC 11-1 and 4-2 to drop Austin a 2-19 on the season. In their season finale, the Austin Community College baseball team lost 9-4 and 9-0 to North Hennepin, ending the season at 2-21. They committed nine errors in the final two contests. For the season, the Blue Devils set records for most losses in one season (21), poorest fielding percentage for one season, and lowest team batting average. ACC was led in hitting by Bryan Schwab (.295).

ACC shot a 345, with Mitch Fossey shooting a 80, Mike Cummins 82, Scott Banton 84, LeAnn Ihrke a 99, and Don Nystal 99. In the Rochester invitational, Austin finished 5 th out of eight teams with a 329. Banton had a 73, Cummins (78). Fossey (80) and Nystal (98) for their team score. In the state and Region XIII, Austin shot a two day score of 702 and tied for 12 th. Scott Banton finished fourth in the individual competition (152) and earned a berth in the NJCAA national golf tournament in Lehigh, Florida. Banton shot opened with a 76, then followed it up with a 79, 81, and 82 for a four day total of 318. Members included: Mitch Fossey, Mike Cummins, Scott Banton, Don Nystel, LeAnn Irhke, Greg Dennison, Kent Steiner. Women s Golf Lee Ann Ihrke competed with the men s team and played the #5 spot during the season. There was no competition for the women s division. Men s Tennis Coach David Dickinson & Terry Dilley 4-5 Four players return off last year s team. The four veterans are: John Rosenberg, Merrnie Budde, Tim Smaby, and Matt Daniels. The men s team opened its season with a 8-1 win over Bethany, then lost three consecutive matches; 7-2 to North Hennepin, 7-2 to Inver Hills, and 9-0 to Normandale. The Blue Devils got their second and third wins of the season by upending Rochester 6-3 and Inver Hills 5-4 (avenging a earlier loss 7-2). Normandale shutout ACC for the second time 9-0, Austin won its fourth match (no score found), and finished the regular season losing 6-3 to Inver Hills. In the state tournament, Jon Rosenberg, Tim Smaby and Matt Daniels all lost in the first round. Mernie Budde and Karl Hedin each won one match before being defeated, and Scott Meeker won his first two matches at #5 before losing in the semifinals. In the doubles competition, Budde-Rosenberg and Smaby-Daniels lost in round one. The team of Hedin-Meeker won two matches before falling in the semifinal round. The team finished in 8 th place. Members included: John Rosenburg, Mernie Budde, Tim Smaby, Matt Daniels, Karl Hedin, Scott Meeker, Greg Hovland, Clark Barger, Jon Larson, and Mike Jette.
Women s Tennis Coach Vel Moen 6-3 ACC won its opener 9-0 over Bethany. Lee Ann Irke, Branda Hueman, Cindy Perkins, Julie Felton, Joan Volser, and Lois Gutz all were winners. Austin made it two in a row with a 7-2 to win over Willmar, before losing its first match 7-2 to Lakewood CC. After upping their record to 3-1 (no score found), Austin lost its second match of year 8-1 to Anoka Ramsey, dropping 3-2 on the season. The Lady Blue Devils then defeated Normandale 8-1 and Bethany 6-3, before losing a tough match to Rochester 5-4. In their final match of the season, Austin narrowly defeated Inver Hills 5-4 to finish the season 6-3 on the year. Perkins, Gutz, Vosler, and Felton were singles winners in the final match, while the double combination of Gutz-Perkins got the only win in doubles. In the state tournament, ACC finished 5 th out of ten teams, collecting ten points. Anoka Ramsey won it with 23 points. No Lady Blue Devil got past the second round except Lois Gutz and Joan Volser. Gutz won her first two matches before losing in the semifinals. Vosler received a bye, the won 7-5, 6-1 before losing in the semis. In doubles competition, Gutz and Cindy Perkins received a bye, won 1-6, 7-6, 6-4 before losing in the semifinals. Members include: Julie Felton, Lois Gutz, Brenda Hueman, Lee Ann Ihrke, Michelle Pare, Cindy Perkins, Joan Vosler, Judy Vosler TRACK Coach Larry Gilbertson Four meets scheduled for one ACC competitor, Tom Krieger. In the Waseca Invitational, Krieger placed in two events, high jumping 6 4 for second place and finishing third in the 110 meter high hurdles running :15.9. At the Region XIII meet, Tom Krieger qualified for the NJCAA national tournament by placing first in the 110 high hurdle competition. Krieger ran a :14.7 in the pre-lims to qualify for the championship race. Tom ran a personal best :14.58 and took first place, earning his team 10 points and ACC finished in eighth place out of eleven teams. Krieger also earned himself a trip to the NJCAA Track championships in San Angelo, Texas. He ran a :15.02 in the first heat and did not qualify for any further competition. * This was the first year that students from Austin Technical College and Albert Lea Technical College were eligible to participate for ACC athletic teams.
