After claiming the Summit League regular season championship earlier the week, the South Dakota State University women s basketball team will begin its quest for a postseason tournament title Saturday afternoon against two-time defending champion Oral Roberts (Okla.) before a home-state crowd. Tipoff for the first quarterfinal of the Summit League Championship and SDSU s first-ever game in the tournament is set for noon at the Sioux Falls Arena. The matchup will mark the second time in six days the two squads have met, after the Jackrabbits ended the regular season Monday night with a 71-64 victory over ORU in Tulsa, Okla. SDSU, ranked 14th in this week s USA Today/ESPN coaches poll and 17th by the Associated Press, enters its first Summit League Championship with a 28-2 overall record after completing a 17-1 slate in league play. The Jackrabbits won their last 14 league games following a 67-51 setback at runner-up Oakland (Mich.) on Jan. 5. Eighth-seeded Oral Roberts, meanwhile, is 13-16 overall this season, including a 6-12 Summit League record. The Golden Eagles captured each of the last two Summit League Championship crowns, defeating top-seeded Oakland, 72-55, in 2007, and knocking off IUPUI, 66-53, last year. ORU also won the 2005 tournament title over UMKC, 48-42, giving the Golden Eagles an automatic berth in the NCAA Tournament in three of the four years the Summit League Championship was played in Tulsa. The winner of Saturday s game will advance to semifinal action on Monday, March 9, against either fourth-seeded IUPUI (15-14, 10-8) or No. 5 IPFW (9-20, 8-10). The Summit League Championship is the first NCAA Division I basketball tournament to be played in South Dakota, with the winners, both men and women, receiving automatic bids to the NCAA Tournament. NEUTRAL SITE: Although Sioux Falls is only a little over 50 miles away from Brookings and a large contingent of Jackrabbit fans are expected to attend the tournament, the Sioux Falls Arena should be considered a neutral site. The last time a Jackrabbit women s basketball team played a game in the Sioux Falls Arena was Feb. 26, 1994, when SDSU defeated Augustana (S.D.), 78-71. HISTORY LESSONS: The Summit League (previously the Mid-Continent Conference) postseason tournament has been a trap for the No. 1-seeded team for the past decade. No top-seeded team has won the tournament since 1998, when regular season champion Youngstown State (Ohio) also claimed the tournament title with 78-69 victory over second-seeded Valparaiso (Ind.) Both of those schools are now members of the Horizon League. However, the No. 8 seed has never beaten the top-seeded team in a first-round matchup since the postseason tournament was implemented in 1993. The last time the top two seeds met in the championship game was in 2002, when second-seeded Oakland defeated top-seeded Valparaiso, 52-40. LEAGUE FAVORITES: The Jackrabbit women s basketball team lived up to expectations by winning the outright conference title as it was tabbed as the preseason favorite to win The Summit League title during the 2008-09 season. The Jackrabbits received 23 of 30 first-place votes in the poll conducted by the league s coaches, sports information directors and select media representatives. Oakland (Mich.) was second in the poll with three first-place votes, followed by Oral Roberts (Okla.), which also received three first-place votes. North Dakota State received the final first-place vote. POSTSEASON HONORS: Led by Player of the Year Jennifer Warkenthien, the leaguechampion South Dakota State University women s basketball team was well represented in Summit League postseason honors announced Thursday. Other Jackrabbits honored on the all-league team were second-team selection Ketty Cornemann and honorable mention picks Maria Boever and Kristin Rotert. In addition, Aaron Johnston was named Summit League Coach of the Year for the second consecutive season and Jill Young was honored as Summit League Sixth Woman of the Year and earned a spot on the league s All-Newcomer Team. She posted the top two scoring games in the league this season, tallying 29 points against Oakland (Mich.) on Jan. 31 and 28 at Southern Utah on Jan. 17. Warkenthien is only the second Jackrabbit women's basketball player to earn a conference player of the year award, joining Laurie (Bruns) Kruse, who was named North Central Conference Player of the Year during the 1990-91 season. Cornemann, a junior forward from Yankton, posted averages of 9.9 points and 3.4 rebounds per league game. She scored in double figures in 10 games, including a careerhigh 23 points in a Jan. 19 game at A junior forward from Worthington, Minn., Boever shot 53.1 percent from the field in 14 league games, while averaging 9.4 points and 5.4 rebounds. She also ranked among the league leaders in blocked shots. Rotert, a sophomore guard from Salem, started 16 of 18 league games and ranked among the league leaders with an average of 1.67 three-pointers made per game. She averaged 9.9 points and 2.7 rebounds per game. Young became the second Jackrabbit in as many years to be named Sixth Woman of the Year, and also earned a spot on the All-Newcomer Team, repeating what Rotert accomplished during the 2007-08 season. A redshirt freshman from Mitchell, Young ranked second on the team with an average of 10.3 points per league game, led the league with 44 three-pointers and ranked second in three-point percentage of 45.8 percent. In his ninth season as head coach, Aaron Johnston led SDSU to its second consecutive regular season league title. The Jackrabbits have gone 33-3 against Summit League opposition in its two years in the league and also have attained the highest-ever national ranking by a league team as SDSU stands 14th in this week s USA Today/ESPN coaches poll and 17th in the Associated Press rankings. TRANSITION OVER: The NCAA Division I Management Council Administrative Committee, acting on behalf of the DI Management Council, announced in late June 2008 that South Dakota State University has met the requirements to become an active member of NCAA Division I, starting at the beginning of the 2008-09 academic year. Previously a member of Division II, SDSU successfully completed the five-year process of moving its athletics programs to comply with Division I membership requirements. Requirements include compliance with Division I rules for the final four years, meeting minimum financial aid and contest scheduling limits, engaging in a rules compliance review and successfully completing the athletics certification process. SDSU officials submitted an extensive self-study to the NCAA in the spring of 2007 and a peer-review team completed the study during a campus visit in October 2007. THE SERIES: Saturday s game will mark the fifth meeting between SDSU and Oral Roberts in women s basketball, a series that began with the Jackrabbits joining The Summit League at the start of the 2007-08 season. The Jackrabbits hold a 3-1 series advantage after winning the last three matchups at Frost Arena. ORU s lone victory in the series spolied SDSU s Summit League debut as the Golden Eagles scored a 67-57 victory in Tulsa on Dec. 8, 2007. SDSU recorded 20-point victories in its two Frost Arena matchups against the Golden Eagles, including an 88-67 victory on March 3, 2008, to close out the 2007-08 campaign. ORU GAME RECAPS: The Jackrabbits used strong three-point shooting to sweep the regular season series from Oral Roberts. Dec. 6: SDSU 76, Oral Roberts 52 Ketty Cornemann tied a career high with 20 points and Jennifer Warkenthien posted a double-double with 15 points and 17 rebounds, leading South Dakota State to a 76-52 Summit League victory over Oral Roberts (Okla.) at Frost Arena. A flurry of three-pointers by Kristin Rotert, Ashlea Muckenhirn and Cornemann in the first three minutes gave SDSU a 9-0 lead. Poll released March 3, 2009 [SDSU opponents in bold] SDSU began the game 10-of-18 from the field and 7-for-7 at the free throw line, upping the lead to 31-11 on two Cornemann free throws with 7:42 remaining in the first half. The Jackrabbits also turned the ball over only three times in the opening half as they led by as many as 24 points before taking a 42-19 advantage into halftime. Cornemann scored 15 of her 20 points in the first half and Rotert tallied 14 in the opening half en route to 18 for the game. The Jackrabbits prevented ORU from gaining any momentum through much of the second half as they took their largest lead of the night, 71-37, on a Rotert three-pointer with 4:06 remaining. Freshman reserve Jennie Sunnarborg added 10 points and eight rebounds for the Jackrabbits. SDSU ended the night 27-of-55 from the field, 49.1 percent, including 7-of-18 on three-pointers. The Jackrabbits also made 15-of-20 free throws, 75 percent. The Jackrabbits also held a 47-33 advantage on the boards. Of Warkenthien s gamehigh 17 rebounds, 15 came on the defensive end. March 2: SDSU 71, Oral Roberts 64 Jill Young drained seven three-pointers, including the go-ahead trifecta down the stretch, lifting the Jackrabbits to a 71-64 victory at Oral Roberts and the outright Summit League regular season championship. Oral Roberts dropped to 13-16 overall, 6-12 in league play. The two teams will meet again Saturday in the opening round of the Summit League Championship. Tipoff is set for noon at the Sioux Falls Arena. The game was tightly contested throughout, featuring seven ties and 12 lead changes. In the first half, neither team held more than a three-point lead until a Janae Voelker free throw put Oral Roberts up 30-26 with 3 minutes, 27 seconds remaining in the half. The Jackrabbits scored the next eight points to regain the lead as Young and Kristin Rotert sandwiched the team s seventh and eighth three-pointers of the half around two Jennifer Warkenthien free throws. Poll released March 2, 2009 [SDSU opponents in bold] SDSU opened a six-point cushion, 38-32, early in the second half, but ORU regained the lead at 47-45 on a Monah Pegorari basket with 13:04 remaining in the game. Another Young three-pointer on the next Jackrabbit possession put SDSU back in the lead, but the Golden Eagles tied the game at 52-alll on an Amy Pryor three-pointer with 8:12 remaining. The score remained knotted at 52 until Young canned her seventh three-pointer of the night with 5:14 remaining. SDSU overcame early struggles from the free throw line to score 14 of its final 16 points at the stripe, making 16-of-20 attempts in the second half and 20-of-28 for the game, 71.3 percent. Young finished with a game-high 23 points to lead a Jackrabbit bench unit that combined for 36 of the team s 71 points. Stacie Oistad added 10 points off the bench, while starters Kristin Rotert and Maria Boever tallied 14 and 12 points, respectively. Much of the Jackrabbits offense came from the perimeter as 13 of their 19 field goals against the ORU zone were three-pointers. Overall, SDSU was 19-of-50 from the field, 38 percent, including 13-of-31 from three-point range. Mariana Camargo led the Golden Eagles with 15 points, followed by 12 points from Jordan Pyle and 11 by Voelker. ORU ended the night 22-of-55 from the field, 40 percent, including 3-for-12 on threepoint tries. The Golden Eagles missed several opportunities at the free throw line, making 17-of-31 attempts, 54.5 percent. The Golden Eagles held a 41-33 rebounding advantage, pulling down 16 boards on the offensive end. Voelker led the way with a game-high 10 rebounds as she finished off a double-double. Ashlea Muckenhirn led SDSU with a season-high eight rebounds and matched her career high with six assists. RABBITS RANKED: The Jackrabbit women s basketball team continues to gain national attention as SDSU cracked the Division I rankings for the first time on Dec. 16, earning the 22nd spot in the USA Today/ESPN coaches poll with 97 points. This week, SDSU is ranked 14th in the USA Today/ESPN coaches poll, up two spots from the previous week. The Jackrabbits also advanced four spots to No. 17 in the Associated Press poll. Both are the highest rankings for SDSU at the Division I level, as well as by a Summit League member. Northern Illinois previously held the highest ranking by a league team with a No. 21 showing during the 1992-93 campaign. The Jackrabbits have been ranked in the USA Today/ESPN poll each of the last 12 weeks. SDSU had fallen out of the Associated Press rankings following its loss at Oakland on Jan. 5, ending a three-week showing in the poll, before re-entering the poll at No. 24 on Jan 26. The Jackrabbits are the first Summit League (formerly the Mid-Continent Conference) team to be ranked since Northern Illinois held a No. 25 ranking for one week during the 1993-94 season. SDSU received one vote in the preseason AP poll, but dropped out of the list of teams receiving votes after the season opener at Missouri. It marked the second year in a row since moving to NCAA Division I that the Jackrabbits have appeared in a preseason national poll. SDSU also received votes during the 2006-07 season, reaching a high of five votes after season-opening wins over Middle Tennessee State and Southern California. The Jackrabbit rise has not gone unnoticed as the team was the subject of a feature article that ran on the front page of the women s basketball section at ESPN.com in late November and also received extensive national television coverage in CBS Sports midseason report on Jan. 3. In addition, SDSU was recently featured in a New York Times article. Through games played Feb. 28, SDSU was ranked 30th among 340 Division I teams in the RPI compiled by the NCAA. As of March 4, the Jackrabbits also ranked 21st in the Sagarin rankings and 30th in the rankings produced by realtimerpi.com. RPI is based on a number of factors, including team s Division I winning percentage, opponent s Division I winning percentage or team s strength of schedule and opponents strength of schedule. An adjusted RPI is used in women s basketball, giving bonus points to wins over top- 50 teams and penalty points for losses to teams ranked lower than 150 in the RPI. In addition, games are weighted differently for location (home, neutral, road). WINNING RECORD: Since moving up to the NCAA Division I ranks at the start of the 2004-05 season, the Jackrabbits have posted a winning record against D-I opponents. In its first four-plus seasons competing at the Division I level, SDSU has compiled a 98-31 mark (.760 winning percentage) versus D-I opposition. The Jackrabbits have posted victories over 48 different Division I teams representing 17 conferences plus independents. OPENING SUCCESS: The Jackrabbits five-point victory at Missouri on Nov. 14 marked the 16th consecutive season SDSU has opened the season with a win. The last time the Jackrabbits lost a season opener was during the 1992-93 season, when they fell 74-72 to Moorhead State (Minn.). 700 WINS: The Jackrabbits victory over Missouri on Nov. 18, 2007, was the 700th in the women s basketball program s history. Since the modern era of women s basketball at South Dakota State University began with a 6-0 mark during the 1966-67 season, the Jacks have gone on to compile an overall record of 746-331 (.693 winning percentage). SDSU has assured itself of its 23rd consecutive winning season. SDSU s last losing season was an 11-16 campaign during the 1985-86 season. 28 AND COUNTING: The Jackrabbits 28 victories this season are: The most by an SDSU team at the Division I level; The most in a regular season in program history, surpassing the previous record of 25 during the 1995-96 and 2002-03 seasons; Tied for the second-highest single-season total in program history. Additionally, the Jackrabbits 17 Summit League victories were the most by a conference member since Northern Illinois went a perfect 18-0 during the 1993-94 season. FEASTING IN FEBRUARY: The Jackrabbits have made a habit of ending the regular season strong throughout their time in Division I. With its 97-52 victory at Centenary (La.) on Feb. 28, SDSU has won 20 consecutive February games and 31 of 33 games during the month in its five-year history of competing at the D-I level.

SDSU s last loss in a February game came on Feb. 28, 2006, when the Jackrabbits dropped an 83-71 decision at UC Riverside. STREAKING: SDSU enters Saturday s tournament opener on a 14-game winning streak, which is tied for the eighth-longest current winning streak in Division I women s basketball. The Jackrabbits also had a 10-game winning streak earlier this season. The Jackrabbits ended both the 2006-07 and 2007-08 regular seasons with 12-game winning streaks. The 2006-07 squad extended its streak to 14 wins in a row with two victories in the Women s NIT. The 2007-08 streak ended with a first-round WNIT loss to Creighton (Neb.). TOEING THE LINE: South Dakota State has held a big advantage at the free throw line this season, making 24 more free throws than the opposition has attempted (490-466). Overall, the Jackrabbits have made 72.9 percent (490-of-672) of their attempts, while their opponents are shooting 70.2 percent (327-of-466). On Nov. 23 against Oregon, SDSU put together the second-best free throw shooting performance in the program s history, making 21-of-22 attempts, 95.5 percent. SDSU was a perfect 12-for-12 in the second half. The Jackrabbits recorded another solid performance at the free throw line on Jan. 10, converting 23-of-26 tries, 88.5 percent, against IUPUI. SDSU made a season-best 26 free throws in 32 attempts its Jan. 24 game against North Dakota State. DEPTH AND BALANCE: The Jackrabbits had at least two players score in double figures in the first 20 games of the season, a streak that ended Jan. 24 against North Dakota State. SDSU has had at least three players in double figures in 15 of the last 18 games and 20 times this season. Only once the Feb. 7 victory at Western Illinois have the Jackrabbits not had a player reach double figures. In all, eight different players have tallied double digits for scoring. Six different players have taken their turn leading the team in scoring, while senior forward Jennifer Warkenthien has been the top scorer in a team-best 14 contests. In addition, eight different players are currently averaging at least four points per game, led by Warkenthien with 15.0 points per game and Kristin Rotert at 10.5 per outing. The Mitchell native sat out last season and the first game this year after transferring from Creighton (Neb.), and currently leads the regular reserves with an average of 9.9 points per game, after leading the reserves in scoring in 14 of the last 21 games. She set a career high with 25 points on 6-of-9 three-point shooting Dec. 12 at Gonzaga (Wash.), then recorded the most three-pointers in a game by a Jackrabbit player since 2002 with seven at Oral Roberts (Okla.) on March 2, en route to a game-high 23 points. Young averaged 14.5 points per game in two starts during a January homestand. She made her first career start in the Jan. 10 game against IUPUI, scoring a game-high 17 points. She was 3-of-6 from three-point range and added five rebounds in 25 minutes of action. Young added 12 points on 3-of-5 shooting from long range in the Jan. 12 victory over Western Illinois. Although spending 10 games in the starting lineup this season, Stacie Oistad has been another top SDSU reserve. Oistad, who has been the team s leading scorer off the bench eight times this season, keyed a 20-2 Jackrabbit run early in the first half against Wisconsin with a pair of three-pointers en route to sharing game-high honors with 11 points. The Jackrabbits have made 10 or more three-pointers in four of the last five games and seven times this season. SDSU leads the Summit League with an average of 8.3 three-pointers per game and ranked sixth among Division I teams heading into the week. In its Feb. 14 game versus UMKC, SDSU tied a school record with 16 made threepointers, previously set Feb. 1, 2005, at Northern State. Eight different players connected on three-pointers, led by Jill Young s 4-for-6 shooting performance as the Jackrabbits ended the game 16-of-28 (57.1 percent) from long range. SDSU s 16 three-pointers in a game is tied for the fourth-highest single-game total at the Division I level this season. The Jackrabbits previous season high came in their Dec. 12 matchup at Gonzaga (Wash.), when they sank a 14 three-pointers in 28 attempts. Eleven different SDSU players have made a three-pointer this season, with Vanessa Johnson joining the group Feb. 14 versus UMKC. The Jackrabbits are led by Young with a freshman-record 66 made three-pointers and Kristin Rotert with 53. Young currently ranks second in The Summit League and began the week ranked 11th nationally for three-point accuracy at 44.3 percent. TOUGH AT HOME: SDSU s loss to Creighton (Neb.) in the first round of the Women s NIT on March 20, 2008, was a rarity during the Aaron Johnston era. In his tenure as

Since the start of the 2001-02 season, SDSU has a 106-7 home record, losing just one game at Frost Arena each full season before capping the 2008-09 regular season with a 14-0 record a mark that could stand as the first undefeated home season in school history. The loss to Creighton snapped a 22-game home winning streak, which was the third-longest active streak in Division I at the time. The loss to Creighton also put an end to a streak of 54 consecutive wins in games in which the Jackrabbits led at halftime. SDSU is undefeated at home in Summit League play, posting an 18-0 record at Frost Arena since joining the league in 2007-08. The Jackrabbits have won their home conference games by an average of 26.7 points. GETTING DEFENSIVE: South Dakota State enters the week as the top defensive team in The Summit League, allowing only 54.2 points per game. The Jackrabbits entered the week tied for 14th among Division I teams in scoring defense. For the season, the Jackrabbits have allowed 50 or fewer points in a game 13 times, including 10 games in Summit League play, and have given up less than 60 points seven other times. SDSU s 31 points allowed to Western Illinois on Feb. 7 were the fewest the Jackrabbits have surrendered to a Summit League opponent. In sweeping a road trip at Western Illinois and IUPUI Feb. 7-9, the Jackrabbits surrendered an average of 39.5 points per game and limited their opponents to a combined 29-of-97 (29.9 percent) from the field, including 2-of-19 from three-point range. HALFTIME ADJUSTMENTS: Leading at halftime meant little or nothing during November s Caribbean Challenge MTE as the team trailing at intermission came back to win all three games involving the Jackrabbits. SDSU held a one-point lead against Maryland, 25-24, at halftime in the opener, then overcame a 38-25 deficit to Illinois on Nov. 27 and a 35-30 deficit to Montana on Nov. 28. The Jackrabbits have won four games in which they have trailed at halftime this season, including the season opener at Missouri. SDSU was behind 24-17 at intermission to the Tigers before rallying for a 55-50 victory. SDSU s most recent come-from-behind victory came Dec. 9 against Minnesota, after trailing 33-28 at the break and by as many as 11 points early in the second half before rallying. The Jackrabbits lone loss when trailing at halftime this season came in their Jan. 5 matchup at Oakland (Mich.). SDSU trailed 33-15 at the half, but was able to trim the margin to two in the second half before fading down the stretch in a 67-51 loss. A season ago, SDSU was 1-6 in games it either was tied or trailed at the half. The lone victory was a 74-72 overtime win at IPFW on Feb. 4, 2008. WARKENTHIEN REACHES 1,000: With an 18-point performance against IPFW on Jan. 3, senior Jennifer Warkenthien became the 26th member of the Jackrabbit 1,000- point club and the first to accomplish the feat by playing her entire career at the Division I level. The Willow Lake native enters Saturday s game against Oral Roberts ranked 18th on the Jackrabbit career scoring list with 1,269 points, after scoring six at ORU on March 2. Next on the scoring list are Jodi Bergemann (1,270 points from 1991-94) and Carleen Rose (1,281 points from 1990-93) and Erin Reiten (1,281 points from 1993-96). Warkenthien also is moving up the Jackrabbit career rebounding chart with 734, entering play Saturday tied for the eighth spot with Deb Van Klei (734 rebounds from 1986-89) and 12 away from seventh place, which is currently occupied by Carleen Rose (746 rebounds from 1990-93). Warkenthien currently leads the team in scoring with an average of 15.0 points per outing. She has reached double figures 23 times this season, including 20 of the last 24 games.
