La Leyenda del Dorado: Race Rules Last updated 7th August 2018 1. DEFINITION La Leyenda del Dorado (La Leyenda) Mountain Bike Race is a 7 day stage event in Colombia. Riders will ride ride over 450 km in 7 days with over 15,000 m of ascent. Participants will also be exposed to the following extreme conditions: temperatures possibly as low as - 3 C and as high as 40 C with a maximum elevation of 4000 m. It is an extreme prolonged physical endurance test for all participants no matter what their sporting experience is. The Terms and Conditions, which follow shall govern the entire event and shall determine, but not be limited to, the relationship between each participant and the organiser. It is each and every participant s duty to be familiar with them and to ensure absolute compliance within reason. When mentioning La Leyenda it will be understood to mean La Leyenda del Dorado and/or the organisation responsible for the race. 2. DISCLAIMER Each participant recognises that the race requires a minimum level of training and that he/she must be medically fit and appropriately conditioned to participate. By accepting the registration conditions, each participant takes full and complete responsibility in case of an accident that could occur during the outgoing or return trip to and from La Leyenda or during La Leyenda itself. Each participant also takes responsibility for the risks linked to such an event, including but not limited to, accidents with other participants, bad weather, road traffic conditions, or any other unforeseen event that could put at risk the health and safety of the rider, other riders, race personnel or general public. Bike riding and bike racing is an inherently dangerous sport and self evidently exposes each participant to a number of risks [the Risks], in particular but not limited to personal injury or mechanical damage to bike equipment. This is a fundamental and trite observation and it is not therefore deemed necessary, in these circumstances, to make a list [comprehensive or otherwise] of all or any of these so-called Risks. Suffice to say therefore, it must be understood that each participant accepts that there are the above-mentioned Risks, and other Risks involved in participating in La Leyenda, and that these Risks are the Participants and not the Organisations. In signing up to the event, each participant acknowledges and accepts the above proposition, and further accepts the following propositions, namely that: Each participant shall be responsible for obtaining his or her own health insurance cover. Each participant absolutely and completely absolves the Organisation for all responsibility with regard to the loss or damage to any personal property regardless of the circumstances. The Organisation, whilst having made every effort [the Effort] to (a) make the event as safe as possible for each and every participant, and (b) having addressed and or reduced and or eliminated or having attempted to eliminate as many of the Risks as it is possible to have anticipated and or foreseen, is nevertheless not able to control, or anticipate, or foresee all events, and this is accepted by all participants. The Efforts are a continuing and ongoing process. In light of this, the Organisation will at its absolute discretion make changes to the course and or itinerary at short notice if it is deemed to be necessary to secure the objective of safety. This also includes modifying and/or suspending a stage if the organisers consider it necessary for the health and safety of the riders, staff and spectators involved in the event. La Leyenda reserves the right to cancel the event in case of insufficient participant registration. In this circumstance the full amount of registration fee, bank charges or any other expense incurred would be refunded. The organisation may propose an alternative form of another format of event participants already registered. If the event is cancelled by circumstances not attributable to La Leyenda del Dorado (force majeure), the participant will not be entitled to any refund of the fee or compensation for other losses such as travel costs or accommodation. 3. REQUIREMENTS OF PARTICIPATION La Leyenda is open to all cyclists, racers and non-racers (aged 19 or older on 31 December of the year in which the race takes place) from any country. The participation of La Leyenda is subject to the presentation of a suitable sports licence carrying the attestation of a medical certificate confirming an appropriate level of fitness for cycling in a competition. The cyclists holding such a competition licence need to send a copy / need to show a copy of their licence to validate their registration (2019 licence clearly showing the mention cycling ). All the other participants will need to send La Leyenda medical form signed and dated by a qualified doctor to register@la-leyenda.com. Participants must also fill out the online registration form correctly including medical and emergency sections containing all the information that could be necessary in case of an emergency during the race. All participants must have Medical/Health Insurance. All participants must read, understand and adhere to the official La Leyenda del Dorado Race Rules which complements this document. 4. If the above is not fulfilled, the registered competitors in this category will be informed and integrated into the next most suitable category. 5. RACE REGISTRATION Five stages must be completed before retrieving your official race number and registration pack at registration the day before the Prologue begins: 1. The registration form must be filled out online on the official website. To validate this first stage, the entry fees must accompany the registration form. 2. The participant then receives by email a payment confirmation. 3. The participant must then send the accompanying required documents (photocopy of valid license or medical form signed and dated) by email to register@la-leyenda.com. 4. The participant receives his registration confirmation by email. 5. The participant will pick up his race numbers at registration, the day before the event with his registration confirmation, one piece of Photo ID (passport, national identity card, driving license etc). For the avoidance of doubt, it is essential that all of the above referred to 5 stages are completed. If they are not then the consequence will be that no race number will be issued, and without the race number it will not be possible to participate in the event. Some additional details: With the exception of race numbers that are already reserved, the assignment of race numbers will be handled in chronological order of registration. A participant will have the same number for all the stages. It will not be possible to get the number without the registration confirmation. Registration of one person cannot under any circumstances be transferred to another person without written confirmation from the Organisation. Infringements of this rule will be penalised with immediate exclusion from La Leyenda del Dorado. 10. SAFETY DURING THE RACE The route will not always be closed to vehicles but it will be secured and the riders will benefit from a right of way during some sections of the race. Marshals will be present on the side of the road to ensure the peloton s safety. On top of the race management cars, motorbikes specialised in cycling races will surround La Leyenda Route participants. In some regions, the La Leyenda will benefit from Police support to secure strategic parts of the route. End of race vehicles will close the race. In Colombia, the traffic law requires that all vehicles travel on the right hand side of the road. All riders must respect the traffic laws (see the Código de Tránsito Colombiano, Artículo 95: Normas Específicas para Bicicletas y Triciclos ): To cycle on the right hand side of the road, at any time; To respect the road signs put in place by the organisation; To respect other road users who are not involved in the race. Each rider has the duty to wear their number on their back and their handlebars at all times. They must not be modified, defaced, cut or reduced in size. Penalties shall apply. Some of the stages will start by a secured convoy of all the participants, at a regulated speed, until the real start line (when racing starts). Each rider will have to scrupulously respect the instructions given by the race management team. When the real finish line of the stage (when timing stops) is located before the host city, the cyclists will have to abide the traffic laws for the remaining distance, especially as they won t be benefiting from a right of way. If it takes the view that it is necessary for the safety of the riders and/or conducive to safety, the Organisation may introduce speed limits in descents, or may decide to stop timing in the descents, in its complete and unfettered discretion. 11. ROUTE INFORMATION, BIKE COMPUTERS, ALTIMETERS AND GPS UNITS The 7 stages will be fully sign posted so riders can follow the signals and check points. All distance and altitude data for each stage is published on the website and will be in the race handbook. Data may vary due to differences in personal calibrations, methods of measurement and different types of devices. 12. PERSONAL BAG TRANSFER When you pick up your race pack in the race village, you will receive the official La Leyenda 100 L bag. This official bag will be your unique travel luggage for the whole length of the event. This bag should be used to store all personal items and clothing for the duration of the race. Each participant must drop off their bag at the designated luggage spot on the morning of each stage. The bags will then be transported to the next stage location where they can be picked up on arrival in the finish area on the display of suitable identification. We can only transport one bag for each participant. When you arrive at the start location we ask that you transfer the necessary contents from your traveling bag into the bag that is provided by La Leyenda del Dorado. Since the organisation cannot control the content of each participant s official bag, it is suggested not to carry valuable items. There is no possibility to make a claim regarding damage or loss. In no case can the responsibility of the organisation be engaged. Each participant will remain responsible for the content of their bag, including during stages. Racers with a Nevado package will have their baggage delivered directly to their accommodation. The same conditions apply to Nevado package racers regarding the contents of race bags as mentioned above. 13. OFFICIAL PRIZEGIVING CEREMONIES An official prize giving ceremony will take place, at the end of each stage in the race village and at 7pm during dinner. AMENDMENTS TO INDIVIDUAL STAGE ARRANGEMENTS For each stage of La Leyenda, the organisation reserves the right to change at any time the course and/or the position of the aid stations and/or the day time limit. 17. ENVIRONMENTAL By entering La Leyenda del Dorado, the participants commit to respect the environment and the natural areas visited. It is strictly forbidden to abandon any type of waste (paper, plastic packaging...), or pick up biological or animal material or commit any other act that could negatively affect the ecosystem of the area on the race course. Some bins are available at each aid station and it is imperative to use them. Random checks will be made on the racecourse. Any rider caught throwing some waste on the race course will be subject to the penalties laid out in La Leyenda del Dorado race rules. Environmental and Ethical - see section 27 of La Leyenda del Dorado Race Rules 18. INSURANCES What follows below is subject to the general disclaimer set out above in Point 2. Civil Liability: In conformance with all relevant current legislation of the dominant and governing jurisdiction [please see Point 2], the organiser has taken out insurance that protects against the financial consequences of actions against the organiser, its staff and the participants in the race. With respect to the personal liability coverage of the participants, it is limited to the accidents they could cause during the race from the start line to the finish line of the timed sections. This insurance will take effect either as a complement to other insurance the participants might have or if participants do not have any insurance. Personal Accidents: We highly recommend that all participants of the La Leyenda 2019, with or without a license from a sports federation, take out an insurance guaranteeing the payment of a lump sum in case of injury (death or permanent invalidity) due to an accident that may occur during La Leyenda. The compensation, depending on the damages suffered, will be paid only if the participant who suffers the accident during the race is insured. It is an optional insurance but highly recommended. Damage to personal possessions: the organisation declines all responsibility for loss or damage to any of a participant s personal belongings. The organiser s insurance contract does not cover loss or damages suffered by participants due to loss of or damage to personal possessions including the bicycle and related equipment. To protect against costs and damages related to theft or damage to a bike or related equipment, all participants are responsible for obtaining their own insurance. The Organisation cannot be held responsible for any possible accidents whether the rider is the cause or victim. Such accidents and the consequences of them, must be covered by the insurance policy of the rider. The Organisation will accept no responsibility for debts, costs that the rider incurs, the repair and damage costs to the bikes, or the loss of any other material owned by the rider. The participant absolves the Organisation of all responsibility regarding the loss or damage to any personal property regardless of the circumstances. 19. IMAGE RIGHTS By participating in La Leyenda del Dorado, each entrant expressly allows the organisation (or subsequent organisers) to use, reproduce or have reproduced his name, image, voice and sports performance through the race for any direct use or as a derivative of the race and this, in any material, in the world, by any means known or unknown to date, and for the duration of protection currently granted for such use direct or derived by the law or regulations, judicial decisions and/or arbitration of any country and by current or future international agreements, including any extensions that may be made at this time. 20. ACCEPTANCE OF THE TERMS AND CONDITIONS By entering La Leyenda del Dorado, each participant acknowledges having read and accepted these regulations explicitly and without reservation.
