On the Expectations for the 2004 Season: I expect our team to strive for perfection, and settle for excellence. No matter their accomplishments in the past, resting on our laurels will surely make us complacent. Defending a championship gets tougher every time you win another one because it becomes harder and harder to keep your focus on making yourself better. No matter what happens in November, we have to put every bit of our effort into improving every day. That is the only way we can put ourselves in the best position possible to hoist another Big Sky Championship trophy. 2 2004 Idaho State University Bengal Soccer Game Notes

Spreading the Wealth: Eight different Bengals have scored at least one goal through just eight games this season. The Bengals had 10 players through the entire 2003 season score at least one goal. Defending the Cup: Idaho State retains the Governor s Cup after all three teams (ISU, Boise State, Idaho) tied with identical 1-1 records. The three teams also finished with identical point differentials, resulting in Idaho State retaining the cup. ISU Closes Exhibition Slate with 1-1 Record: Idaho State wrapped up its preseason schedule with a 1-1 record. The squad defeated Utah State 1-0 on Friday before falling to No. 15 Utah on Sunday 3-0. Jessie Bobert scored ISU s goal against Utah State on an assist from Natalie Graham in the 19th minute. Despite playing Utah evenly for the first 30 minutes, the Bengals gave up one goal at the end of the first half and two in the second to take the loss against the nationally-ranked team. Fox and Smith Join Bengal Coaching Ranks: During the offseason, Idaho State coach Mark Salisbury added two assistant coaches to his staff. Amanda Fox comes to ISU from Binghamton University Amanda Fox Janel Smith in Vestal, New York. Fox will handle all aspects of coaching with the Bengals, including special instruction with the goalkeepers, practice planning, training, conditioning, and travel preparations. Fox spent three years as a full-time assistant coach at Binghamton, helping the Bearcats make the jump to Division I-A in 2002. Fox helped the team reach the semifinals of the America East Conference Tournament in 2003. Fox was a four-year starting goalkeeper for the University of Oregon, where she led the Ducks to their highest win total ever her senior season. In her four years at Oregon, Fox started all 75 games, twice earning Most Valuable Defensive Player accolades and twice leading the Pac-10 in saves. She also was a two-time Pac-10 All-Academic selection, and was named to the All-America Strength and Fitness team. Also joining the squad will be ISU soccer alum Janel Smith. The four-year starter earned All-Big Sky Conference honors three straight times. Smith helped Idaho State to three straight Big Sky Conference Tournament Championships. She played in 76 games for the Bengals over her four-year career, the fifth most games in ISU history. Smith scored eight goals during her career and tallied 27 points, ranking her eighth on ISU s all-time list. Smith ranks in the top-10 of 10 career all-time Idaho State statistical recors. Smith was named to the Big Sky All- Tournament team after her squad won the 2003 championship, catapulting the team into the NCAA College Cup. Smith proved instramental in helping ISU defeat nationally-ranked Utah on penalty NOTES kicks and advance to the second round of the tournament. Bengals Top Preseason Big Sky Poll: The Idaho State Bengals were tabbed as the preseason favorites by league coaches in the Big Sky Conference preseason women s soccer poll released last week by the league office. ISU, which won the Big Sky tournament title last season, received two of seven first place votes and 29 points overall to take top honors. Northern Arizona, which lost to ISU in the Big Sky Tournament semifinals, was second with two first place votes and 28 points. Montana was third with two first place votes and 27 points. Portland State was selected fourth with one first place vote and 24 points. Rounding out the field was Weber State fifth at 22 points and Eastern Washington was sixth with 11 points. 4 2004 Idaho State University Bengal Soccer Game Notes

Idaho State 1, Utah State 0 Jessie Bobert s goal on an assist from Natalie Graham in the 19th minute of the first half proved to be enough as the Idaho State women s soccer team defeated Utah State 1-0 in an exhibition contest Aug. 20 at Davis Field. Bobert, a junior from Vancouver, Wash., scored her goal from the middle of the box off Graham s assist from the left side then putting past Utah State goalkeeper Megan Mills to give ISU the 1-0 lead early. The Bengals controlled play throughout the contest, outshooting the Aggies 4-2 on goal. Bengal goalkeeper Shannon Boyle had a relatively easy day in goal, making just two saves to pick up the shutout. Utah 3, Idaho State 0 Idaho State gave up one goal in the first half and two in the second as 15th-ranked Utah defeated the Bengals 3-0 Aug. 22 at Davis Field in a preseason contest. ISU wraps up its exhibition season with a 1-1 record. ISU held its own against nationallyranked Utah, not giving up a goal until the 38th minute in the first half. Utah midfielder Hailey Marsh headed the ball off the far post before ISU goalkeeper Shannon Boyle could reach it to give the Utes a 1-0 lead into halftime. Utah scored again in the 63rd minute of the game after the Bengals fouled Utah s Erin Pruitt in the box, giving her a penalty kick. Pruitt took advantage of the free kick, scoring on a shot to the left corner of the goal.
