GO BIG 9.14.13!

Introduction Welcome to the Big Cottonwood Marathon & Half! We are glad to have you join us and look forward to showing you what it means to GO BIG! Whether you are looking for an incredibly fast race, a Boston Qualifier, breathtaking views, or unique perks like top quality race shirts, huge finisher medals, free race photos, and personalized highlight videos, we have it all for you. Get ready for an unforgettable race experience get ready to GO BIG! General Information Date: September 14, 2013 Time: 6:40 AM Venue: Big Cottonwood Canyon Finish: Cottonwood High School Race Expo Date: September 13, 2013 Location: 9575 South State Street, Sandy, UT Time: 10:00 AM until 8:00 PM Race Directors will be available to answer any lastminute questions, and vendors will also be present to offer some great products and deals. Please bring a valid picture ID to pick up your race bag. Anyone picking up a race bag for another participant will need a signed note authorizing that person to do so and a photocopy of the individual's picture ID. The expo will be held in Expo Hall 300 on the north end of the South Towne Expo Center, and parking is available on the northwest side of the building. Parking & Busing Half Marathon Location: Cottonwood High School, north lot Address: 5717 South 1300 East, Murray, UT Time: Buses leave from 4:00-5:00 AM Full Marathon Location: Van Winkle Shopping Center Address: 5600 South Van Winkle, Murray, UT Time: Buses leave from 4:00-5:00 AM Please note that there are distinct parking and busing locations for the half and full marathons. The Van Winkle Shopping Center is located one block northeast of the high school. The last buses will leave at 5:00 AM sharp in order to ensure an on-time start. It is important that you be on time, as self-transportation to the start lines is not an option. Drop Bags & Personal Belongings You may take your drop bag and any personal belongings with you to the starting areas. A number that matches your race bib will be affixed to the outside of your drop bag. This is to identify your drop bag at the finish area after the race, and you will need your bib to prove ownership of it. Please carry any belongings to the starting area in the drop bag provided to you as opposed to any personal bags, which cannot be identified by your race number. Drop bags must be placed in the transport vehicles at the starting areas no later than 6:30 AM. Starting Areas The half marathon will begin approximately 9 miles up Big Cottonwood Canyon near Mill-D parking lot, and the full marathon will begin approximately 17 miles up the canyon at Guardsman Pass. Porta-potties, water, and last-minute instructions will be provided at the starting areas. While we will provide gloves and Mylar blankets, we recommend that you come prepared for cold temperatures at the start line by layering and then shedding your layers to put in your drop bag just before the race begins. Timing The races will be chip-timed. Your time will begin when you cross the starting line, not at the start gun, and will stop when you cross the finish line. However, overall race winners will be determined by gun time, not chip time. Please do not tamper with the timing chips, as they cannot be replaced once linked to your bib number.

Race Bibs Your timing tag will be affixed to your race bib. It is important that you do not cover your bib with clothing, Mylar blankets, or other objects that may interfere with the bib tag reader when you are crossing the start and finish lines. Furthermore, in order to ensure that race volunteers, officials, and photographers can properly identify you, you must wear your bib on the front of your person in an unobstructed position. Course Description Both races descend Big Cottonwood Canyon for a majority of the race distance. Once exiting the canyon, runners will continue westbound on a combination of roads and paved running paths and through the Cottonwood Corporate Center. The races will then split, with the full marathon going north on Holladay Boulevard and the half marathon heading west on 6200 South. The full marathon will continue north to 4500 South, turn west to Highland Drive, and then return south to meet up again with the half marathon course at the corner of Highland Drive and 6200 South. From this point, both races will continue west on Vine Street to 1300 East and then head north to finish at Cottonwood High School. Aid Stations & Nutrition Aid stations will be located every two miles along the course. Each aid station will have restrooms, water, and lemon-lime Gatorade. Select aid stations will also be supplied with other race nutrition such as Gu Energy Gels, fruit, candy, etc. A table outlining aid station locations and amenities is provided at the end of the Race Guide. Road Safety The canyon will be partially closed to traffic from 6:40 AM until 10:30 AM on race day. During this time, the westbound lane will be reserved for our runners. Traffic in the eastbound lane will be limited to one direction, which will be coordinated by our pilot cars. Candlestick barricades will be placed every 80 feet along the center of the road, and for your safety you must stay to the right of these barricades at all times while in the canyon Once runners exit the canyon, the course will continue to be marked by candlestick barricades and road signs. Please stay within the barricades at all times and be aware of any road traffic around you. Race volunteers and police officers will be present at all major intersections and turns on the courses to guide runners and stop traffic when necessary. Please follow their directions at all times in order to ensure your safety. Course Time Limits The canyon will be partially closed only until 10:30 AM. After this time any runners still in the canyon may continue to run, but they will need to do so without course support or a designated running lane. They may also choose to be picked up and driven to the mouth of the canyon, where they can continue the race. To make it out of the canyon in time, marathon runners will need to average a 13:30 minute/mile pace and half marathon runners will need to average a 27:00 minute/mile pace. This is equivalent to a very light jog or brisk power walk, and for this reason the expectation is that only a few runners, if any, will need to be picked up. Once outside the canyon, the course will close at 1:00 PM. Any runners still on the course after this time may continue to proceed along the course route to the finish area, but aid station and traffic control support will not be available. Photography There will be photographers at multiple locations along the course to take pictures of your race experience. Be sure to smile big, make a tough face, or strike a pose for the cameras. Photographers will also be at the finish to capture your sprint across the line and take your photos in front of our backdrops. All race photos will be provided for free via Facebook after the race.

! Weather Average race-day temperatures for the Salt Lake Valley are given below. Please keep in mind that average temperatures in the canyon will be considerably cooler in the morning. While we will provide gloves and Mylar blankets, we highly recommend that you come prepared for cold temperatures at the start line by layering and then shedding your layers to put in your drop bag just before the race begins. Average Race-Day Temperatures Average Temperature 66 F Average High Temperature 77 F Average Low Temperature 55 F Medical Assistance Each of the aid stations will be supplied with a firstaid kit that will include items such as bandages, moleskin, Vaseline, anti-inflammatories, etc. If you are in need of any of these items, simply stop and ask the volunteers at the aid station and they will be able to help you. In addition to the first-aid kits, various aid stations will be staffed by medical volunteers and equipped with a medical tent and cot. Refer to the aid station chart at the end of the Race Guide for the locations of these medical aid stations. Spectator Locations Because the canyon will be closed to spectators, we recommend that your family and friends find other good spots along the course to cheer you on. There are many places they can stake out with multiple opportunities to see you pass by if they plan it right. Spectators will also be allowed to park at Cottonwood High School to cheer you in and celebrate with you after you cross the finish line. Refer your fan club to the course maps under the marathon and half marathon tabs of our website to plot out their desired locations. Age Divisions Age divisions will follow the standard USATF guidelines, and include the following: Under 18, 19-24, 25-29, 30-34, 35-39, 40-44, 45-49, 50-54, 55-59, 60-64, 65-69, and 70 & Over. Results & Awards All runners completing the race will receive an amazing finisher's medal as they cross the finish line. The top three finishers in each age division will receive Skullcandy Chops Buds, additional prizes from our sponsors, and an awards certificate. The top three overall males and females will receive acrylic trophies, running gift baskets, premium Skullcandy headphones, and the cash prizes listed below. Awards ceremonies will take place at 10:30 AM (half marathon) and 11:30 AM (full marathon). Full Marathon Cash Prizes: 1st Place: $500 2nd Place: $250 3rd Place: $100 Half Marathon Cash Prizes: 1st Place: $300 2nd Place: $100 3rd Place: $50 Thank You We want to say thank you for participating in the 2013 Big Cottonwood Marathon & Half. We are excited to put this event on for you, and have worked hard so that you can have an unforgettable experience on race-day. We look forward to helping you accomplish your goals to GO BIG on 9.14.13. We will see you then!
