The team s only loss came to Michigan in Iowa City on Aug. 26. Since losing their first game of the season, North Carolina has combined to outscore its opponents, 8-1, over their last three games. The Tar Heels entered the season ranked No. 1 in the NFHCA Coaches Poll. SCOUTING THE BUCKEYES The Buckeyes are off to a 2-1 start to 2017. After the Buckeyes knocked off No. 9 Louisville, they fell to Kent State, 2-1, on Sept. 5. Ohio State is under the direction of first year head coach Jarred Martin, who spent the last 10 seasons as an assistant coach at Duke. Seniors Maddy Humphrey and Liz Tamburro, along with sophomore Esther Clotet Alsina earned Preseason All-Big Ten honors HEAD COACH JENNIFER AVERILL Jennifer Averill is Wake Forest Field Hockey. Averill is in her 26th year as a head coach this season and boasts an impressive 362-174-3 (.671) at Wake Forest. She has been a coach for 28 years, holding a career 369-199-6 (.642) record. She has built the Wake Forest program, almost from scratch, into a perennial national power. Averill s time at Wake Forest has been a productive one. Wake Forest has captured ACC Championships in 2002, 2003, 2006 and 2014. The Deacons also enjoyed 12-straight NCAA Tournament appearances from 1999-2010 under Averill s reign. Wake Forest is currently on a three year streak of appearances as well, dating back to 2013. Of those appearancecs, Averill boasts three national championships, 2002, 2003 and 2004. Most recently in 2014, the Demon Deacons won their fourth ACC Field Hockey Championship in program history. The title was Wake Forest s first ACC team title since women s soccer in 2010 and was the athletic department s 47th all-time team ACC Championship. That year, Averill earned her a seventh-career ACC Coach of the Year award. Averill has been recognized by many organizations and in 2010 she was inducted into the National Field Hockey Coaches Association Hall of Fame. Before coaching, Averill was a highly-successful player. She was a four-time All-American at Northwestern and earned the prestigious Honda Broderick Award in 1987 for being the nation s best field hockey player.
