Melilla students visit Oaks Park April 2016 This term students and teachers from our partner school IES Enrique Nieto in Melilla came to visit us for a day. Melilla is a Spanish town on the northern coast of Africa and we have had links with IES Enrique Nieto for several years. The group of 60 Year 9 students and 3 teachers took part in a whole range of activities which they thoroughly enjoyed. Their visit was also a great blessing to us as well. Following an introduction to the school by Mr Wilks and the Oaks Park 6 th Form video, the morning saw our first football internationals on the new 4G pitch. These England-Spain under-15 matches, organised by our PE department, were closely contested games and ably refereed by Mr Quinn, who also referees for West Ham. Then there were Spanish-English lessons hosted by Mr Perez & 7W and Ms Wild & 8P where students from both schools made the most of the opportunity to develop foreign language skills, including chatting animatedly about sports and pastimes. Our guests also enjoyed visiting Science, Geography, History and PSHE lessons, escorted by our excellent Year 9 guides: James Miller 9Y, Adam Chaudhary 9Y, Alina Tariq 9Y, Andre Everson 9W, Saba Ejaz 9B, Kireth Bolina 9W, Nirvan Barua 9W, Ismaeel Kayani 9W and Mia Olagbaju 9W. The visit concluded with an excellent dinner in the canteen and fond farewells until the next time. Oaks Park and IES Enrique Nieto recently completed a Comenius project sponsored by the British Council which used European funding to develop the entrepreneurial skills of students in both schools. We hope to work together on further projects in the future. You can find out more about this project and IES Enrique Nieto by visiting the project website: http://upeformacion01.wix.com/comeniusregio. Our visitors from Melilla were very impressed with the warm welcome they received from our staff and students. A big thank you to all involved for a very successful and worthwhile visit. I am writing to remind you that Redbridge Libraries are currently offering excellent opportunities for young people to gain skills and experience by volunteering during the summer holiday period. Please see attached poster promoting a role which supports the Summer Reading Challenge, a nationally recognised campaign encouraging younger children to read for pleasure throughout the holiday. Volunteers work as a team and select working hours to suit their availability during the summer. Our focus this year is to recruit students from Years 9 and 10 in particular, although Sixth Form students are also welcome to apply. I would be grateful if you could promote this opportunity to your pupils. There are vacancies at a number of Redbridge Libraries, and in particular at Redbridge Central Library which is a busy location and a great place to experience volunteering. Thank you for your support with this venture.
