Justin Firesheets BULLDOGS BOHLER NAMED OVC PLAYER OF THE YEAR Sophomore forward Rebecca Bohler was named the 2005 Ohio Valley Conference Player of the Year on Nov. 3, as she became the second-straight Bulldog to earn the league s top honor. Last season, Samford s Crystal Royall received the award en route to becoming the first player to sweep both Player and Defensive Player of the Year honors. Bohler leads the conference in assists with 12 and is ranked among the top-five players in the league in both points (20) and points per game (0.95). SAMFORD S YELTON NAMED 2005 COACH OF THE YEAR Head coach Todd Yelton earned his second OVC Coach of the Year honor in three seasons on Nov. 3, as the Bulldogs skipper led his team to a third-consecutive conference regular-season title. Samford heads into the NCAA Tournament with a school-record 15-3-3 overall record after winning its first 2005 OVC Tournament in school history. In 2003, the Bulldogs inaugural season in the OVC, Yelton led Samford to a 12-4-5 mark and a 7-1 record in conference play. He was named the OVC Coach of the Year for his efforts. BULLDOGS NO. 12 IN SOUTHEAST REGIONAL RANKINGS Samford moved up three spots in the Soccer Buzz Southeast Regional rankings on Tuesday as the Bulldogs came in at the No. 12 position in publication's weekly standings. Earlier this season, Samford earned its first-ever regional ranking as it was recognized as the 15th-ranked team in the region on Sept. 19. Samford (15-3-3) was the lone representative from the state of Alabama in Tuesday's Southeast Regional rankings conducted by Soccer Buzz Magazine. Soccer Buzz is a national publication devoted solely to the coverage of collegiate soccer. Alabama, Auburn, Samford and UAB have all been ranked in the Southeast Region this season. Auburn was dropped from the rankings on Sept. 12, while Alabama followed on Oct. 10 and UAB was held out of the standings for the first time last week. SAMFORD SETS SINGLE-SEASON RECORD FOR WINS With a 2-0 victory over Belmont on Oct. 28, Samford improved to 14-3-2 and set a singleseason school record in wins. The shutout victory took place on Senior Night and allowed the Bulldogs to surpass the team s previous record of 13 set in 2002. The 2002 season was head coach Todd Yelton s first at Samford and the Bulldogs ended the campaign with a 13-7- 1 record. Since then, Samford has gone 1-0-1 and now owns a 15-3-3 overall record. BOHLER SETS SAMFORD S ALL-TIME ASSIST RECORD In Samford s final game of the regular season, sophomore Rebecca Bohler assisted on both of the team s goals in a 2-0 victory over Belmont. True freshman Lauren Faubion scored both of the goals in the win, but Bohler became the school s all-time single-season assist leader. Heading into the contest, she was deadlocked for the top spot with former Bulldoggreat Mitzi Mahan with nine. Mahan, who set the previous record during the 1998 campaign, was also a sophomore when she accomplished the feat. In two seasons at Samford, Bohler has already recorded 17 career assists, which is good for a third-place tie on the all-time list. Former players, Jackie Foster and Mahan, are currently tied for the school record with 20. BULLDOGS GARNER NUMEROUS WEEKLY OVC HONORS This season, Samford has earned a total of six OVC weekly awards, with the honors being evenly split between the offensive and defensive sides of the ball. In 10 weeks of the regular season, the Bulldogs received three Offensive Player of the Week awards and three Defensive Player of the Week awards. Sophomore forward Heather Birdsell and senior goalkeeper Emily Morris have each earned two awards this season, while true freshmen Cayley Winters and Lauren Faubion have each received one apiece. YELTON BECOMES SAMFORD S WINNINGEST SOCCER COACH Head coach Todd Yelton became Samford's all-time winningest coach on Sept. 9, as the Bulldogs defeated NC State, 1-0, on the road in Raleigh, N.C. The victory was the 39th of his career. Yelton enters the NCAA Tournament with a 50-21-10 all-time record. MATCH NOTES - - - 2005 NCAA TOURNAMENT

FOUR BULLDOGS NAMED TO ALL-TOURNAMENT TEAM Immediately following Samford s 1-0 victory over Eastern Illinois in the championship game of the OVC Tournament on Sunday, the Bulldogs had four players named to the alltournament team. Junior Sharon Young scored the game-winning goal in the victory and was named the Most Valuable Player of the tournament, while goalkeeper Cayley Winters, defender Rebecca Mock and forward Heather Birdsell also earned all-tournament honors. CALLING ON CAYLEY Mere minutes before Samford s conference matchup against Eastern Kentucky on Sept. 23, the Bulldogs senior goalkeeper Emily Morris strained her shoulder during warm-ups and was forced out of action. The injury allowed true freshman Cayley Winters an opportunity to start in goal and since then, the Littleton, Colo., native has recorded six shutouts, compiled a 10-2-1 record and has only allowed five goals. So far this season, Winters has achieved an.868 save percentage and currently owns a stellar 0.40 goals-against average. In two games during the 2005 OVC Tournament, Winters spent 200 minutes on the field and didn t allow a single goal. She made four saves in the tournament, plus a pair of critical stops during a penalty-kick shootout against Murray State. SAMFORD IN THE NATIONAL RANKINGS In the latest national rankings released on Monday, Samford came in as the No. 3-ranked team in the country in save percentage (.882). The Bulldogs were also ranked eighth in the nation in goals-against average (0.46) and 17th in the country in shutout percentage (0.57). Samford s Cayley Winters and Rebecca Bohler were ranked in the nation s individual rankings on Monday. Winters, the Bulldogs starting goalkeeper, is ranked seventh nationally in goals-against average (0.40), while Bohler comes in as the country s 19th-ranked player in assists per game (0.57). Bohler, is a sophomore from Augusta, Ga., and was named the 2005 OVC Player of the Year earlier this season. BULLDOGS WIN 2005 OVC TOURNAMENT TITLE Samford made history on Sunday as the Bulldogs earned the school's first-ever berth in the NCAA College Cup by defeating the Eastern Illinois, 1-0, at Lakeside Field. With the win, Samford (15-3-3) earned the 2005 OVC Tournament title and junior Sharon Young was named the Most Valuable Player. Young, the Bulldogs' native of Powder Springs, Ga., scored the game-winning goal during the 78th minute of play. Samford's true freshman, Cayley Winters, earned the shutout in goal, her sixth of the season. She didn't allow a single goal in 200 minutes of the OVC Tournament and was named to the all-tournament team. With the score knotted at 0-0 late in the second half, Samford was fouled deep in Eastern Illinois territory and was awarded a direct kick. On the ensuing set piece, the Bulldogs' Rebecca Bohler, sent a high lofting ball down in front of EIU's goal. The pass bounced directly in front of the Panthers' net, bounded off a pair of defenders and found its way to the right post. With the ball a mere few feet from the goal line, Samford's Young gained possession and slammed it home into the back of the net. THE FIRST TIME AROUND - - SAMFORD vs. VANDERBILT In a hard-fought contest held at the VU Soccer Complex on Sept. 18, Samford dropped a 2-1 decision against the 24th-ranked Vanderbilt Commodores. The physical matchup included 39 fouls and seven yellow cards. With the loss, Samford dropped its first match of the 2005 campaign and snapped a seven-game undefeated streak. Vanderbilt, the Bulldogs' highestranked opponent in over a year, extended its unbeaten streak to seven-consecutive matches. Samford's Kim Matthews scored her second goal of the season in the defeat and sophomore Heather Birdsell earned the assist. Vanderbilt was whistled for 24 fouls in the matchup, while the Bulldogs were called for 15. The Commodores were issued a total of five yellow cards and Samford finished with a pair of cautions. With the score of the match knotted at 1-1 with 8:45 remaining in the contest, Vanderbilt's Lea Lafield tallied the game-winning goal off of an assist from Amy Baumann. The Commodores jumped out to an early 1-0 advantage in the game as Meghan Habig scored a goal at 9:17 into the match. The goal proved to be Habig's third of the season and marked the first time that an opponent scored on Samford in 446:17 minutes of play. Samford quickly evened the score at 1-1 during the 26th minute of the first half. RECORDS WATCH CAREER GOALS 1. Marian Wagner..... 25.... 2002 - Lindsay Shanks..... 25.... 2001-04 3.
