Birdsell, a native of Plano, Texas, scored a goal and added an assist en route to being named the MVP of the tournament. She scored the game-winning goal against Memphis on Friday before tallying a key second-half assist, her second of the season, against Marshall on Sunday. Four Samford players were named to the all-tournament team of the 2005 Long s Electronics Samford Classic on Sunday, as Rebecca Bohler, Kim Matthews, Devon Paris and Heather Birdsell earned the honors. Goalkeeper Emily Morris was named the OVC s Defensive Player of the Week on Aug. 30, as the Bulldogs' senior helped guide the team to a 1-0-1 record against Mississippi State and Wofford. Morris limited the opposition to only one goal in a total of 168:51 minutes of play and shared a shutout victory over Wofford, 3-0. Senior Marian Wagner scored the Bulldogs third goal of the night against Wofford on Aug. 26. The score came off of an entry pass from Shay Helmbock and moved her into a tie for second place on Samford's all-time goals-scored list with 23. Wagner is currently three goals shy of becoming the Bulldogs' all-time leading scorer. Former player Lindsay Shanks holds the record with 25. The Bulldogs welcome a total of seven returning starters this season, including 15 returning letterwinners. Up front, Samford boasts the return of all three starting forwards in senior Marian Wagner, junior Kim Matthews and sophomore Rebecca Bohler. Midfielders Heather Birdsell and Jessika Mejia also return to the starting lineup and are joined by defenders Sharon Young and Devon Paris. Samford (3-0-1) claimed first place in the four-team competition by compiling a 2-0 record over the weekend, while Memphis finished as the runner-up with a 1-1 mark. Evansville also concluded the tournament with a 1-1 record, but fell to Memphis, 2-1, on Sunday. Marshall held the Bulldogs scoreless for a little over 63:00 minutes in the contest before Samford's Matthews tallied the game-winning goal. On the play, the Bulldogs' junior from Colleyville, Texas, gathered a set-up pass from Rebecca Bohler, out-ran a pair of Marshall defenders down the left sideline and fired a 10-yard running strike into the right-hand portion of the net. The goal occurred at exactly 18:46 into the second half and proved to be Matthews' first of the season. Samford's defense limited the Thundering Herd to only two shot attempts, with one being on goal. The Bulldogs' senior captain, Emily Morris, and freshman Cayley Winters each played 45:00 minutes in goal to combine for the shutout victory. Morris has only allowed two goals in 303:51 minutes of work this season. Junior Allison Stone scored an insurance goal for Samford at the 87:49 mark in the contest. COACHES Head Coach...... The OVC preseason ranking was conducted by the league office and was determined by a vote of the conference's coaches, with the exception being that each head coach could not rank his or her own team. The Bulldogs, who won both the 2003 and 2004 regular-season titles, received eight firstplace votes and a total of 80 points, while Eastern Illinois, the 2004 OVC Tournament champions, picked up the remaining pair of first-place nods and 73 total points. Southeast Missouri was predicted to finish third in the league with 63 points, while Jacksonville State accumulated 57 points for a fourth-place ranking. Last season, Samford concluded the campaign with a 10-7-1 overall record and earned its second straight OVC regular-season championship. The Bulldogs completed conference play with a stellar 7-1 mark and advanced to the title game of the 2004 OVC Tournament. Among Samford's top returnees is sophomore midfielder Heather Birdsell from Plano, Texas. The 2004 All-OVC first-team selection led the squad with four goals and 40 shots last year. Also returning to the Bulldogs this season is senior forward Marian Wagner. The native of Spring, Texas finished the 2004 campaign ranked first on the team with four goals and was second with nine points. After joining the OVC in 2003, the Bulldogs have garnered back-to-back regular-season championships and have compiled a near-perfect 14-2 conference record. Head Coach Todd Yelton was named the OVC Coach of the Year in 2003 and led Samford to its initial Soccer Buzz Southeast Regional ranking prior to the 2004 season. Yelton took over the reigns of the Samford University soccer program prior to the 2002 season and immediately helped the Bulldogs become contenders in the Atlantic Sun Conference. 2005 OVC Preseason Standings Rank Pts. 1.
