MAVERICKS NOTES Statistical research assistance provided by the Elias Sports Bureau DIRK TURNS BACK THE CLOCK WITH 20-20 PERFORMANCE: Mavericks forward Dirk Nowitzki totaled 21 points (8-16 FGs, 1-3 3FGs, 4-4 FTs) and a seasonhigh 20 rebounds in 35 minutes against Milwaukee on 2/26/13. It was his first 20-20 game since 4/3/03 vs. the L.A. Lakers (25 points and 22 rebounds), an NBArecord span of nine years and 329 days between 20-20 efforts (points with rebounds or assists). It was Nowitzki s sixth career 20-20 game. It was also his seventh game with 20-plus rebounds, and his first since 12/27/07 (20 rebounds). BLOCK PARTY: The Mavericks set a franchise record with 17 blocked shots at New Orleans on 2/22/13 (previous high: 16 vs. Portland 4/7/98). Bernard James accounted for seven of Dallas 17 blocks. Shawn Marion had three, while O.J. Mayo, Elton Brand and Brandan Wright each had two. Jae Crowder also had a rejection off the bench for Dallas. SARGE S SEVEN SWATS: Mavericks rookie center Bernard James blocked a career-high seven shots in just 15 minutes of action at New Orleans on 2/22/13 (his previous high block total was 4 on two occasions). He became the first Mavericks rookie in franchise history to record seven blocks in a game (Kurt Nimphius had 6 as a rookie in 1981-82 and Roy Tarpley had 6 as a first-year player in 1986-87). Since the NBA began tracking blocked shots in 1973, only three other players had at least seven swats while playing less than 16 minutes in a game: Caldwell Jones (1977), Manute Bol (twice: 1988 and 1992) and Sam Bowie (1992). Prior to James, the last Maverick to have seven blocks in a game was Brandan Wright at Houston on 3/24/12. VINSANITY ON THE ALL-TIME SCORING LIST: Mavericks swingman Vince Carter currently ranks 28 th all-time in scoring with 21,849 career points. Clyde Drexler ranks 27 th with 22,195 career points. Carter passed Hal Greer (21,586) for 30 th place on the all-time scoring list at Sacramento on 1/10/13. He dropped 23 points (5-13 FGs, 13-16 FTs) in 34 minutes on 1/10/13. Carter made a pair of free throws at the 41.9-second mark of overtime that gave him 23 points for the game and 21,587 for his career (the exact point total he needed to pass Greer going into the game). In the Mavericks next meeting with the Kings on 2/13/13, Carter moved into 29 th place on the all-time scoring list. He went 6-of-9 from beyond the arc against Sacramento on 2/13/13 and scored 26 points in 23 minutes. With his sixth trey at the 2.9-second mark of the third quarter, he passed Larry Bird (21,791) for 29 th place on the all-time scoring list. The triple gave him 21,794 career points. He made three straight treys to close the third quarter and scored the final nine points of the period. Vinsanity went 5-of-7 from deep in the third quarter alone and scored 17 of his game-high 26 points (9-15 FGs, 6-9 3FGs, 2-2 FTs) in the period. Carter next passed Gary Payton (21,813) for 28 th place on the all-time scoring list at New Orleans on 2/22/13. He went 5-of-7 from beyond the arc on 2/22/13 and scored 22 points (7-13 FGs, 5-7 3FGs, 3-3 FTs) in 29 minutes. Carter tied Payton for 28 th place with a triple at the 4:15 mark of the first quarter (the trey gave him 21,813 career points). He then passed The Glove with a three-point play at the 1:03 mark of the first quarter (which put him at 21,816 career points). Carter scored the Mavericks final 11 points of the first quarter at New Orleans (2/22/13). He also hit a goahead 3-pointer with 6.5 seconds left in the fourth quarter that put Dallas up 102-100 and proved to be the game-winner (Dallas won 104-100). Carter averaged 20- plus points for 10 consecutive seasons from 1999-2009. CARTER HITTING THE 3-BALL: Mavericks swingman Vince Carter has made a team-high 111 3-pointers this season (111-275,.404). He made 74 treys in 61 games with Dallas in 2011-12 (74-205,.361). Carter is shooting 40.4 percent from 3-point range this year, which is the best he s shot from deep since the 2004-05 season (shot.406, 127-313, with Toronto/New Jersey). Carter made a season-high six 3-pointers against the Kings on 2/13/13 (he went 6-of-9 from beyond the arc, including 5-of-7 from deep in the third quarter alone). Carter s fourth trey (at the 1:08 mark of the third quarter) against Sacramento on 2/13/13 was the 1,600 th 3- pointer of his career. He became the 11 th player in NBA history with at least 1,600 career triples. His fifth trey (at the 27.9-second mark of the third quarter) against the Kings on 2/13/13 was his 100 th 3-pointer of the season. With his sixth triple at the 2.9-second mark of the third period against Sacramento on 2/13/13, he passed Larry Bird (21,791) for 29 th place on the NBA s all-time scoring list. Vinsanity has four games with at least five 3-pointers this season (3-1 record). He also has 11 games with four-plus triples on the year. Carter had only one game with four-plus treys all of last season (5-7, at Phoenix 1/30/12). Carter has made at least one trey in each of his last 14 games (vs. Oklahoma City 1/18/13-vs. L.A. Carter shot 19-of-30 (.633) from deep over a four-game span from 2/11-2/22/13. He hit his 50 th 3-pointer of the season in Dallas 25 th game of the year (vs. Philadelphia 12/18/12). He currently has 1,612 career triples, which ranks 11 th all-time. Carter has passed Nick Van Exel (1,528), Tim Hardaway (1,542), Eddie Jones (1,546), Glen Rice (1,559), Philadelphia s Jason Richardson and the L.A. Lakers Kobe Bryant on the all-time triples list this season. BENCH PRODUCTION: The Mavericks are averaging a league-high 40.8 bench points per game this season (the L.A. Clippers rank second with 40.4 bench ppg). Dallas scored a season-high 64 bench-points against Sacramento on 2/13/13 (the Mavs bench outscored the Kings bench 64-25). Dallas has scored at least 50 points off the pine 10 times this season. The Mavericks ranked third in the NBA in bench scoring in 2011-12 (41.0 ppg) and led the league in bench scoring in 2010-11 (40.4 ppg). GETTING OUT ON THE BREAK: Dallas is averaging 17.2 fast break points per game this season, which ranks tied for third in the NBA. Dallas scored a season-high 35 fast break points vs. Detroit on 12/1/12. FREE POINTS: The Mavericks are shooting 79.7 percent from the line this season, which ranks third in the NBA. Dallas ranked ninth in the league in free throw percentage in 2011-12 (.771). The Mavericks led the league in free throw percentage in 2001-02, 2002-03, 2003-04, 2007-08 and 2009-10. COLLISON CONVERTING AT THE LINE: Mavericks point guard Darren Collison is shooting a career-high 90.1 percent from the charity stripe this season (ranks fourth in the NBA). He made a career-high 41 consecutive free throws from 1/18-2/26/13 (his previous high streak was 27 straight in March 2011). Collison s steak began at the 30.5-second mark of the second quarter versus Oklahoma City on 1/18/13, when he made the second of two free throw attempts. He then made his next 40 foul shots, before missing the second of two free throw attempts at the 9:04 mark of the third quarter against Milwaukee on 2/26/13. BALANCED SCORING: The Mavericks are 12-6 this season when they have at least six players with 10-plus points in a game. Dallas had six-plus players in double figures seven times all of last year (5-2 record). Dallas had a season-high-tying seven players in double figures at Orlando on 1/20/13 (also had seven in double digits at Boston on 12/12/12). The Mavericks did not have one game with seven players in double digits all of last season. CARLISLE S 500TH WIN: Mavericks head coach Rick Carlisle recorded his 500 th career win against Portland on 2/6/13 (Dallas defeated Portland 105-99). He became the 28 th coach in NBA history to reach the 500-win mark. Carlisle, who recorded his 500 th victory in his 853 rd game (went 500-353,.586, in his first 853 games), became the 11 th -fastest coach in NBA history (of the 28) to reach the milestone. His 500 th career victory was his 219 th win with the Mavericks (he went 219-142,.607, in his first 361 games with the club). Carlisle joined the Mavericks on May 9, 2008, after spending two seasons with the Pistons (2001-03) and four seasons with the Pacers (2004-07). He went 100-64 (.610) with Detroit and 181-147 (.552) with Indiana. PORTLAND CAN T HOLD THE MAYO: Mavericks guard O.J. Mayo appeared in his 350 th career game against Portland on 2/6/13 and went 11-of-14 (.786) from the field en route to a game-high 28 points. It was the second-best shooting night of Mayo s career. His best shooting performance came against Boston on 3/10/10 when he went 7-of-8 (.875) from the floor. Mayo shot 8-of-9 (.889) from the field in the first half against Portland (2/6/13) and scored 20 of his 28 points before intermission. Mayo is averaging 25.0 points, 4.3 rebounds and 5.0 assists in three games (three starts) against the Blazers in 2012-13. He is shooting 68.3 percent (28-of-41) from the field, 68.8 percent (11-of-16) from 3-point range and 80 percent (8-of-10) from the line against Portland this season. 6,000-PLUS THROWS FOR DIRK: Mavericks forward Dirk Nowitzki has shot 6,083-of-6,936 (.877) from the line for his career. Nowitzki went 2-for-2 from the line at Oklahoma City on 12/27/12, giving him exactly 6,000 career free throws. He became the 18 th player in NBA history with at least 6,000 made free throws. He also became one of only four 7-footers to reach the milestone (Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Wilt Chamberlain, David Robinson). Nowitzki went 8-of-9 from the line against Oklahoma City on 1/18/13 and passed Dominique Wilkins (6,031) for 17 th place on the NBA s all-time free throws made list. With his first free throw of the game (6,036 th career) at Orlando on 1/20/13, he passed David Robinson (6,035) for 16 th place on the all-time list. With his seventh free throw (6,058 th career) at the 11:06 mark of the fourth quarter against Golden State on 2/9/13, Nowitzki passed Wilt Chamberlain (6,057) for 15 th place on the all-time free throws made list. Bob Pettit ranks 14 th all-time with 6,182 career free throws. Nowitzki is one of two players in NBA history to average at least 20 points, eight rebounds and shoot 80 percent from the line for a career (Larry Bird). MARION AND BRAND CONTROL THE PAINT AGAINST PHOENIX: Mavericks forward Shawn Marion recorded a game-high 11 rebounds and four blocks in Dallas 109-99 win at Phoenix on 2/1/13, while big man Elton Brand had 10 rebounds and four blocks. It marked only the second time in the last 20 years that two Mavericks teammates recorded at least 10 boards and four blocks in a game. Dirk Nowitzki (11 rebounds and five blocks) and Erick Dampier (12 rebounds and six blocks) did it for Dallas against Utah on 11/3/09. Marion and Brand combined for eight blocks against Phoenix, while the entire Suns team finished with only seven. RUN-DMC: Darren Michael Collison scored in double figures in a career-best 16 consecutive games from 12/23/12-1/25/13 (his previous high double-figure scoring streak was 15 straight games from 2/5-3/8/10). During the 16-game stretch, he averaged 14.9 points while shooting 53.6 percent (90-of-168) from the field, 53.3 percent (16-of-30) from 3-point range and 91.5 percent (43-of-47) from the line. Though his double-figure scoring streak came to an end on 1/25/13, Collison continued his hot outside shooting through the beginning of February. In a 23-game stretch from 12/23/12-2/9/13, Collison went 24-of-42 (.571) from 3-point range. MARION MILESTONES: Mavericks forward Shawn Marion appeared in his 1,000 th career regular-season game against Phoenix on 1/27/13 and tallied a game-hightying 18 points to go along with a game-high nine rebounds, five assists and a steal in 30 minutes. Marion, who played the first 660 games of his career in Phoenix from 1999-2008, became the 107 th player in NBA history to reach the 1,000-game plateau. It was one of several milestones he achieved this year. Marion grabbed his 9,000 th career rebound at Toronto on 12/14/12, becoming the 45 th player in NBA history with at least 9,000 boards. He eclipsed the 16,000-point mark against Philadelphia on 12/18/12, becoming the 95 th player in league history with at least 16,000 career points. Marion joined Hakeem Olajuwon, Karl Malone and Kevin Garnett as the only players in NBA history with at least 16,000 points, 9,000 rebounds, 1,500 steals and 1,000 blocks. He recorded his 1,600 th career steal at Portland on 1/29/13, becoming the 27 th player in NBA history with at least 1,600 career thefts. He also hit his 700 th career 3-pointer against Golden State on 11/19/12 and recorded his 6,500 th career made field goal against the L.A. Lakers on 11/24/12. FIVE STRAIGHT GAMES WITH SIX-PLUS MAVS IN DOUBLE FIGURES: The Mavericks had at least six players score in double figures in five consecutive games from 1/12-1/20/13. The Mavericks went 4-1 in those games, with their only loss coming against Oklahoma City in overtime on 1/18/13. It marked only the second time in franchise history that Dallas had at least six players score 10-plus points in five straight games (Dallas had six-plus players in double figures in six straight games from 4/5-4/13/86). The Mavericks streak came to an end against San Antonio on 1/25/13 when they finished with five players in double figures (two players finished with eight points for Dallas). BIG NIGHT FROM MAVS BACKCOURT: Mavericks point guard Darren Collison tallied a game-high 23 points (7-11 FGs, 1-1 3FGs, 8-8 FTs) to go along with a game-high-tying nine assists in 36 minutes versus Minnesota on 1/14/13. Mavericks shooting guard O.J. Mayo scored 20 points (8-11 FGs, 3-4 3FGs, 1-1 FTs) and handed out nine assists against the Timberwolves. It marked only the fifth time in franchise history that the Mavericks had two players with at least 20 points and nine assists in the same game (Mark Aguirre and Derek Harper did it in 1988, Jason Kidd and George McCloud in 1996, Michael Finley and Robert Pack in 1999 and Steve Nash and Tim Hardaway in 2002). What s more, it was just the second time in team history that the Mavericks starting guards recorded at least 20 points and nine assists in the same game. Michael Finley (33 points and 10 assists) and Robert Pack (24 points and 11 assists) did it for Dallas against Phoenix on 12/11/99. Collison and Mayo shot a combined 15-of-22 (.682) from the field, 4-of-5 (.800) from deep and 9-of-9 (1.000) from the line against Minnesota. Mayo also recorded seven rebounds and two steals, and Collison added a game-high three steals. Dallas was plus-30 with Mayo in the game and plus-27 with Collison on the floor. The Mavericks guards had another big night later in the year versus Golden State on 2/9/13, when they combined for 37 points and 17 assists. Mayo recorded 19 points and a game-high nine assists against the Warriors, while Collison had 18 points and eight dimes. Mayo recorded a plus-minus rating of plus-24 against the Warriors, while Collison had a plus-minus rating of plus-22. SCORING THE ROCK: The Mavericks are averaging 101.3 points per game this year, which ranks seventh in the NBA. The Mavericks have not finished a season ranked in the top 10 in scoring since 2008-09 when they averaged 101.7 points per game (ranked 9 th in the league). The Mavericks are 22-9 this season when they score 100-plus points, including 12-2 when they score 110-plus points. The Mavericks defeated the Bobcats 126-99 on 11/3/12. It was their highest scoring game since 3/10/11 (defeated New York 127-109). Dallas also posted a 123-point scoring effort against Sacramento on 2/13/13 (defeated Sacramento 123-100). The most points the Mavericks scored in a game in 2011-12 was 122 at Phoenix on 1/30/12 (defeated the Suns 122-99). Dallas ranked 19 th in the league in scoring in 2011-12 (95.8 ppg). DC DROPS 32 AT OKC: Mavericks point guard Darren Collison tallied a season-high 32 points (13-22 FGs, 4-4 3FGs, 2-2 FTs) to go along with five rebounds, four assists and four steals in 40 minutes in the overtime-loss at Oklahoma City on 12/27/12. He went a perfect 4-for-4 from deep. It marked just the second time in his career that he made four 3-pointers in a game (4-5,.800, vs. Denver 11/9/10). The 32-point effort was tied for the second-highest scoring game of his career (32 at San Antonio 3/5/10). He finished three points shy of his career-high of 35 (which he achieved at Dallas on 2/28/10). He recorded his fourth career 30-point game. Collison forced overtime with a hurried, off-balance 3-pointer at the buzzer. The triple gave him 30 points for the game and knotted the game at 98-98. HE S BAAACK!: Mavericks forward Dirk Nowitzki made his season debut at San Antonio on 12/23/12, after missing Dallas first 27 games recovering from arthroscopic right knee surgery. Nowitzki appeared as a reserve at San Antonio and recorded eight points (3-4 FGs, 1-1 3FGs, 1-2 FTs) and six rebounds in 20 minutes. He came off the bench for the first time since 2/5/10 at Minnesota. Nowitzki appeared as a reserve in each of his first six games of the season (at San Antonio 12/23/12-at Miami 1/2/13). He made his first start of the year against New Orleans on 1/5/13 and recorded 20 points and six rebounds in 34 minutes. Nowitzki also had 20 points in Dallas next game at Utah on 1/7/13. The big German had 26 points, including 12 in the fourth quarter, in 34 minutes at Portland on 1/29/13. He dropped 24 points against Atlanta on 2/11/13, and had 25 points at New Orleans on 2/22/13. Nowitzki poured in a season-high 30 points (11-19 FGs, 4-4 3FGs, 4-5 FTs) to go along with 13 rebounds and three steals in 39 minutes against the Lakers on 2/24/13. He then posted a 21-point, 20-rebound effort versus Milwaukee on 2/26/13. Nowitzki has seven games with 20-plus points on the year. Nowitzki missed two games due to a right adductor strain (at Golden State 1/31/13-at Phoenix 2/1/13). The Mavericks are 13-16 (.448) without Nowitzki in the lineup this season. Dallas is 37-37 (.500) all-time when he doesn t play. A-MAYO-ZING PERFORMANCE: Mavericks guard O.J. Mayo poured in a career-high-tying 40 points (15-26 FGs, 6-9 3FGs, 4-4 FTs) to go along with a team-high eight rebounds, three assists and two steals in 42 minutes in Dallas 116-109 win at Houston on 12/8/12 (he also had 40 in a loss at Denver on 11/1/09 while with Memphis). Mayo scored 16 points in the first quarter and also had 16 in the fourth, including 12 of Dallas final 14 points of the game (10 in the last 3 minutes). He went 6-of-9 from the floor in the fourth, including 2-of-2 from deep. Mayo s layup with 21.2 seconds remaining put him at 40 points for the game (and 5,001 for his career). Mayo outdueled Houston s James Harden, who finished with a team-high 39 points on the night. He outscored Harden 16-3 in the fourth quarter. Only one other Mavericks starting guard in the last 18 seasons has scored 40-plus points in a game: Michael Finley dropped 42 at Detroit on 11/27/02. Mayo totaled 30-plus points for the third time in Dallas first 20 games of the season (he had 30 vs. Charlotte on 11/3/12 and 32 vs. Portland on 11/5/12). Before Mayo, no starting guard had even reached that plateau in a game for Dallas since Jason Terry on 2/8/10 (36 at Golden State). Mayo also became the first Maverick other than Dirk Nowitzki to score 40 points in a game since Rodrigue Beaubois tallied 40 off the bench at Golden State on 3/27/10. O.J. TREY-O: Mavericks guard O.J. Mayo is shooting a career-best 40.3 percent (106-of-263) from deep this season. The highest 3-point field goal percentage Mayo has posted for a season was 38.4 percent (career highs of 145-378 3FGs) in 2008-09. Mayo shot 56.8 percent (42-74 3FGs) from beyond the arc through the first 13 games of the 2012-13 season (at L.A. Lakers 10/30/12-vs. New York 11/21/12). He made a career-high seven treys (7-10 3FGs) vs. Charlotte on 11/3/12 and hit his 500 th career triple at New York on 11/9/12. Mayo has four games with six-plus 3-pointers on the year (7-10, vs. Charlotte 11/3/12; 6-8, vs. Portland 11/5/12; 6-9, vs. Detroit 12/1/12; 6-9, at Houston 12/8/12). He had only two games with six treys in his career prior to the 2012-13 season. Dallas is also 13-6 this season when he hits at least three treys in a game. Mayo s first 3-pointer at Phoenix (12/6/12) was his 50 th of the season, making him the fastest Maverick to that milestone. He hit his 50 th trey in Dallas 19 th game of the year (he shot 52-102,.510, from 3-point range through the first 19 games). Prior to Mayo, Jason Terry was the only Maverick to hit 50 threes in the first 20 team games of a season, having made his 50 th in the 20 th game of the 2007-08 season (on 12/6/07, exactly five years ago to the day). Mayo started each of Dallas first 19 games in 2012-13. His 19 personal games needed to reach the 50-triples mark is also the fewest ever by a Dallas player (Terry played in each of Dallas first 20 games in 2007-08 and was again the previous record holder). Mayo hit his 100 th 3-pointer in Dallas 50 th game of the season versus Golden State on 2/9/13. He made 100 treys in 66 games with Memphis last season (100-275,.364). THE MAYO FACTOR: Mavericks guard O.J. Mayo has averaged 20.5 points on 52.3 percent shooting (.546 3FG) in Dallas 25 wins this season. Dallas is 8-3 this season in games in which he scored at least 25 points and 3-1 in games in which he scored at least 30. The Mavericks are also 14-9 in games in which Mayo was their leading scorer (includes ties), and that includes five overtime losses. Mayo has 20 games with 20-plus points this season (Dallas is 13-7 in those games), after he recorded only six 20-point efforts with Memphis all of last year. Dallas is 16-9 in games in which he scored 19-or-more points. Mayo is the only player that has appeared in every game for Dallas this season (he s started every game).
