By vote of the student body, all Furman athletic teams became the "Paladins" on September 15, 1961. A Paladin is a knight on a horse and the recognized mascot of Furman University's athletic teams.

after guiding Furman past Elon 2-1 to capture the SoCon regular season title at the end of October. INTERNATIONAL STAGE - Furman soccer has made a large impact on both the national and international stage over the last five years. Clint Dempsey, the 2006 Honda U.S. Soccer Player-of-the-Year and star for both the U.S. National team and Fulham of the English Premier League, is a former Paladin. An NSCAA All-American with Furman in 2002, Dempsey earned MLS Rookie-of-the-Year honors with the New England Revolution the following year and scored the United States only goal at World Cup 2006 in Germany. Dempsey has been joined in the U.S. midfield over the last year by former Furman teammate and Houston Dynamo standout Ricardo Clark. Also an NSCAA All-American while at Furman, Clark has broken into Bob Bradley s national team lineup at defensive midfielder and has earned two straight MLS All-Star Game invitations. Among Furman s other notable soccer alumni are 2001 Hermann Trophy finalist and Bermuda National team striker John Barry Nusum, goalkeeper Ronnie Pascale of the USL second division Richmond Kickers and former all-american and current technical director for the Wales Football Association Osian Roberts. SOUTH REGION STANDOUTS - Furman ranked third in the National Soccer Association of America s final South Region poll released on November 13. The Paladins, who broke into the poll in September, maintained a top three spot through most of the season and managed a 6-0-0 record against other teams in the top 10. NSCAA South Region Poll 1. Over the last two seasons (41 matches), Furman has allowed just 27 goals. The Paladins are 15-4-0 at home over the past two campaigns. ALLISON HAVING RECORD BREAKING YEAR - Head coach Doug Allison became the Southern Conference s all-time leader in wins on October 3, when Furman downed UNC Greensboro for Allison s 171st victory as a SoCon coach. Former Davidson coach Charlie Slagle had held the mark since 2000. The 13-year Furman coach sports a career 181-70-21 (.704) overall record. He entered the year with a.690 winning perecntage which ranked 12th among active Division I coaches. THE SOCON STANDARD - Furman matched a SoCon record claiming three straight league player-of-the-week citations over the first three weeks of the season. Eliot Paschalis received the honor after earning offensive mvp honors at the Coastal Carolina Invitationa. Brooks Duff held the hot hand for the Paladins at the Diadora/Spinx Invitational capturing tournament mvp honors on his way to SoCon Player-of-the-Week recognition. In week three, Haris Cekic garnered player-of-the-week laurels after scoring three goals, including Furman s game-winner versus Robert Morris. The 1995 Davidson Wildcats are the only other league team to win POTW honors in three consecutive weeks. Bryan Amos garnered POTW honors in early October to give Furman four weekly winners this season. 2007 SoCon All-Tournament Team Erfan Imeni, Elon Will Mason, Elon Doug Edwards, College of Charleston Ryan Kell, College of Charleston Jokull Elisabetarson, UNC Greensboro Nirav Kadam, UNC Greensboro David Worthen, UNC Greensboro Bryan Amos, Furman Takato Ban, Furman Michael Erwood, Furman Patrick White, Furman Most Valuable Player: Bryan Amos, Furman All-Southern Conference Teams First Team F Kareem Yearwood, College of Charleston F Brett Paschall, Elon F Thomas Campbell, UNC Greensboro MF Justin Wyatt, Elon MF Patrick Murray, Furman MF Shea Salinas, Furman MF Jokull Elisabetarson, UNC Greensboro D Jon Leathers, Furman D Steven Kinney, Elon D D.J. Over the course of 12 plus seasons, Doug Allison has established himself as one of the most successful and respected head coaches in all of college soccer. Allison enters his 13th season as Furman's skipper with an overall winning percentage of.690 (162-67-21) which ranks 12th in the nation among active coaches in Division I. Since Allison took over the Paladin soccer program in 1995, Furman has been one of the most successful programs in the nation. In Allison s 12 seasons, the Paladins have claimed seven Southern Conference regular-season titles and five tournament championships, along with several individual accolades, including 31 All-America and Scholar Athlete All-America citations. Allison was named NSCAA South Region Coach of the Year in 1999 and was a finalist for the national Coach-of-the-Year award that year. He has been named Southern Conference Coach of the Year five times and was honored in 1999, 2000 and 2003 as the recipient of the Furman University J. Lyles Alley Coach-of-the-Year award. Doug Allison Allison s tenure at Furman has included many memorable moments and record-breaking performances as Paladin soccer has reached new heights. The 2002 campaign ended with a 2-1 double-overtime loss to eventual national runner-up, Stanford, in the third round of the NCAA Tournament and a 19-3-1 overall record. In the process, Furman broke two long standing NCAA Division I records. The Paladins extended their Southern Conference unbeaten streak to 43 matches, eclipsing the old NCAA mark of 42 straight conference matches without a loss. Remarkably, Furman also put together an 11-match shutout streak, not allowing a goal from October 9 through November 27. In 2003, Allison's squad stretched its NCAA record Southern Conference unbeaten streak to 46 matches and Paladin midfielder Clint Dempsey became the second Furman standout in as many years to be selected in the first round of the Major League Soccer Draft when the New England Revolution tabbed him the eighth overall pick. Allison and the Paladins also found the national spotlight in 1999 as Furman posted a 21-2-1 record, won the Southern Conference regular-season and tournament titles, advanced to the quarterfinals of the NCAA Tournament, and finished the season ranked third in the nation. Furman followed up the 1999 campaign with successful seasons in 2000 and 2001, winning the SoCon regular-season and tournament crowns in each season and earning two more berths in the NCAA Tournament. During his time at Furman, Allison has developed numerous players that have gone on to make their mark in the professional ranks, including Clint Dempsey and Houston Dynamo midfielder Ricardo Clark. The pair has also begun to make its mark on the international level. Both members of the 2007 United States National Team, Dempsey earned a place on the United States 2006 World Cup squad and was the USA s only goal scorer in Germany. Clark made his first appearance with the squad in late 2005. Former Paladin All-American John Barry Nusum also garnered attention on the international level, ranking second in scoring during CONCACAF while playing for Bermuda. Allison s arrival at Furman followed a four-year stint as an assistant coach under Mark Berson at the University of South Carolina, his alma mater. During that span, the Gamecocks posted a 59-18-7 record and made three NCAA Tournament appearances, including a national runner-up finish in 1993.
