RSS Clubs *Amicia Girls, Beyond the Hurt, Diversity Club, the Drug & Alcohol Education Team, and the Lifesavers Team are all Wellness Clubs! This means that if you become involved as a leader in any of them, you can choose to join the Wellness Team! Students meet as a group with Ms. Cail to plan the direction the clubs continue forward in and develop skills as leaders. Students may also earn school credits if certain criteria are met. Amicia Girls WHEN: Tuesdays at lunch to start, then weekly afterschool sessions (3:30-4:30) WHERE: room 2041 ABOUT: Amicia is a girls-for-girls empowerment program! Amicia leaders meet at RMS or SMS once a week after school and mentor middle school girls on the importance of leading healthy lifestyles. Topics discussed include body image, mental health, healthy relationships, physical health and much more. Become a mentor to young girls! Beyond the Hurt Team WHEN: Tuesdays at lunch to start WHERE: room 2041 ABOUT: Beyond the Hurt is a bully prevention program run in conjunction with the Canadian Red Cross! Leaders are trained in presenting and go to RMS and SMS to teach students about the impacts of bullying and violence and work to prevent it. Become part of one BC s best recognized anti-bullying programs, gain valuable presenting skills and make an impact! The goal of the club is to expose students to fun board games they have not encountered, increase positive face-to-face peer interactions, improve strategic and critical thinking, and share board game culture. Games will be supplied by Chelsea or Nathan, with future fundraisers to purchase additional games or accessories. WHERE: MMA room (above the gym) ABOUT: Boxing club is a great way to get in shape, grow your self-confidence, relieve stress, and learn how to defend yourself all in a fun and exciting Way. The classes will be run by Madkatz Boxing head coach Aaron McKitrick, who has trained alongside the likes of Floyd Mayweather Sr., Roger Mayweather and Nate Jones, Wayne Sponagle, and Geoff Lawrence. With the mission of promoting tolerance, inclusion and awareness of our diverse students, the Diversity Club hosts events throughout the year such as Diversity Week and presentations for parents and staff. All students who identify with or support diversity in ability, culture, gender, religion and sexual orientation are welcome to join in our meetings, meet new friends and help make RSS more welcoming for ALL students. Students in this group will be educated by drug and alcohol counsellors and lead presentations at RSS and our middle schools. If you want to learn more about drugs and alcohol or are interested in a career in counselling, this is the group for you! Interact is a youth branch of the world-recognized service organization Rotary International. Students volunteer within the school and community and participate in international service projects, as well as gain connections to Encounters With Canada trips to Ottawa, international Rotary Youth Exchanges and Habitat for Humanity trips to El Salvador! Kitchen Brigades Club WHEN: November to May at 3:30-5:00pm WHERE: RSS Food s Lab ABOUT: The Kitchen Brigades Club consists of 20 culinary workshops, 3 Culinary Challenges and local, provincial, and national iron chef type competitions. The 20 culinary workshops are held as extra-curricular activities with Chef / Teacher Mr. Magliocchi from November to May and allow students to develop their culinary skills and food knowledge. It will be from 3:30 5:oo pm in the Food's Lab at RSS, on a consistent day that is yet to be determined. Do you like good food? Do you like a competition? If you said "yes", this is the club for you! Students in this group raise awareness about mental health, work to reduce stigma, and educate about the supports available to students in the school and community with an annual Wellness Week and Wellness Assembly. Gain skills in event planning, leadership and public speaking while supporting your fellow students. Musical Production WHEN: Auditions in September / Rehearsals after school on Mondays and Wednesdays till 5pm / Performances March 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th and 8th WHERE: Drama Room / Forum ABOUT: Voodoo Theatre will be producing a Musical this year and ANYONE can audition and be involved! You don't have to be taking drama to be in this show - all are welcome and encouraged to audition and / or volunteer for backstage duties. We'll need singers, dancers and musicians! We do writers workshops, giving constructive feedback to other writers, and perform our poetry. We work towards the year end goal of performing an original piece at a youth poetry showcase. If you like poetry, or hip hop, come by and hang out, share your work, or just listen. Take Two is an initiative to reduce the amount of waste RSS produces through the upcoming creation of a plastic recycling workspace that will allow us to take much of the plastic waste from our school currently sent to landfill and turn it into new items like phone cases, pendants, tiles, 3D printer filament, and more! RSS Music Get involved with the RSS music department! Grade 9 students can join a concert band class inside the timetable. Students in grades 10-12 can get involved with one of three groups that will meet outside of the timetable: Concert band Tuesday & Thursday, 7:30am 8:50am Jazz band Wednesday & Friday, 7:30am 8:50am Choir Tuesday & Thursday, 3:30pm-5:00pm If there is enough interest, additional music programs like guitar, contemporary music, pep band, and a partnership with the drama program for a musical can be options available to students! RSS Sports For more information about joining these teams, pay attention to the reader boards and PA announcements, or contact the athletics director Mr. Major (Chris.Major@sd23.bc.ca). Basketball WHEN: November to March - 3-4 times per week (2-3 practices, 1 game) plus some weekend tournaments. WHERE: RSS Gym TRYOUT DATES: Mid November ABOUT: RSS offers teams at Senior, Grade 10, and Grade 9 for both male and female athletes. 7

RSS Cheerleading WHEN: twice a week from September to June WHERE: the RSS forum ABOUT: Competitive Cheerleading that involves crowd cheering, dance, tumbling, stunting and jumps! No previous cheer experience necessary, just a positive attitude! Previous dance, tumbling and team experience is a plus. Competitions are held locally and in Richmond & Vancouver, BC. Supportive, Positive and Respectful environment - the RSS Cheer program is more than just a team, it s a family, and like a Family, Cheerleading requires commitment to the team. Missing one athlete can cause the team to miss skills that are important to the season. Some parent involvement is required. Parent help with Fundraising is a plus. Cheer is not financially supported by the school. It can be expensive to be a part of the program but it is well worth it. Athletes will also be encouraged to practice skills responsibly outside of practices at home and our local gyms Okanagan Firestorm & Okanagan Gymnastics Center. Field Hockey Team WHEN: 2-3 times per week (1 game, 1-2 practices) WHERE: RSS gym/field ABOUT: (Ladies only) For those you have played before or haven't played at all, you're welcome to come try out field hockey. It is a semicompetitive league where we work on some skills, play teams from around the city, and have lots of fun. Girls Soccer WHEN: March - June - 3-4 times per week (2-3 practices, 1-2 games) plus some weekend tournaments. Track and Field WHEN: September to November - 3-4 times per week (2-3 practices, 1 game) plus some weekend tournaments. WHERE: RSS Field / Dome TRYOUT DATES: Early September ABOUT: RSS fields a team at the Senior Level with Juniors welcome to tryout as well. Ultimate Frisbee WHEN: March to June WHERE: RSS Field TRYOUT DATES: March ABOUT: RSS fields a co-ed team of Juniors and Seniors. This will be the second year of this fast-growing sport. Volleyball WHEN: September to November - 3-4 times per week (2-3 practices, 1 game) plus some weekend tournaments. WHERE: RSS Gym TRYOUT DATES: Early September ABOUT: RSS offers teams at Senior, Grade 10, and Grade 9 for both male and female athletes. 10
