St. Lawrence vs. #1 Quinnipiac & Princeton Feb. 12-13, 2016 Zeebs du jour: Friday: Referees: R Tory Carissimo, Cameron Lynch; Lines: Jason Shattie, Jason Williams Saturday: Referees: Tory Carissimo, Kevin Graber; Lines: Luke Salogar, Adam Wood CONTINUE THE CLIMB: The Saints will be out to continue their climb in the ECAC Hockey standings when they host number one Quinnipiac and Princeton in the penultimate home series of the season Friday and Saturday nights. The Saints are 3-0-1 in their last four and 4-1-1 in the last six to climb into a three-way tie for fourth in the ECAC standings with Dartmouth and Rensselaer. That trio stands just three points behind Harvard and Yale, currently tied for second with 21 points while Quinnipiac leads the league with 28 points and could clinch a bye with the proper combination of results this weekend. Quinnipiac comes into Friday s game at Appleton in its fourth straight week atop the USCHO national poll and fifth straight week as number one in the USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine poll. The next highest ranked team to play the Saints in Appleton Arena since the mid 1990s was Boston College, which came in ranked third in the 1997-98 season. The last time a number one ranked team played in Appleton Arena it was the Saints who were number one and Harvard was two...a game won by Harvard in January of 1989. The Saints will follow the meeting with Quinnipiac with a game against an improving Princeton squad which will be looking for its first win at Appleton since 2010-11. THREE POINT ROAD WEEKEND: Kyle Hayton recorded his third shutout of the season and moved to within one of the career record of nine set by Bill Sloan in the 1950s with a 34-save shutout of Rensselaer on Friday night. The game was scoreless for the first 54 minutes until Tommy Thompson took a pass from Mike Marnell and scored the eventual game winner with 5:07 to go in regulation. Christian Horn fed Thompson on a nearly identical play 2:51 later to make it 2-0 and Jacob Pritchard added an empty net goal. Pritchard had two goals on Saturday, earning ECAC Rookie of the Week honors, and the Saints came from behind to grab a 3-3 tie at Union, snapping a six-game losing streak in Schenectady. Pritchard and fellow rookie Michael Laidley scored first period goals to give the Saints a 2-1 lead, Union tied it with the only goal of the second and went ahead 4:35 into the third, but Pritchard s second of the night tied it at 13:13 of the third and it stayed that way through overtime as Hayton again had 34 saves, four of them in the extra period. It was the second three point league weekend of the year for the Saints, both coming on the road...princeton-quinnipiac was the other. COACH GREG CARVEL: Greg Carvel is in his fourth season as Saint head coach after posting one of the best records for a first-year coach in program history in his rookie season and earning the Tim Taylor Award as ECAC Coach of the Year last season. The Saints 18-16-4 mark in 2012-13 is the best for a first-year Saint coach since George Menard went 18-5-0 in his first season, 1955-56. Carvel had his first 20-win season and trip to the ECAC semifinals last year, going 20-14-3. Carvel was named the second Charles W. Appleton II Head Men s Hockey Coach in the spring of 2012. A 1993 graduate of St. Lawrence and a former Saint hockey captain, he joined the staff as an assistant coach in the fall of 2011. He is the 13th head coach in program history. Carvel came to the Saints after a 15-year professional hockey coaching career that included assisting coach duties with the Ottawa Senators and Anaheim Ducks of the National Hockey League, helping both teams reach the Stanley Cup finals. He began his professional career as director of hockey operations for the Lowell Lock Monsters of the American Hockey League and joined Anaheim as scouting coordinator in 1999. He added video coaching duties to his title in Anaheim in 2002 and was promoted to assistant coach in 2003. He joined the Senators in 2004. The winner of the ECAC s Best Defensive Forward Award as a senior at St. Lawrence, Carvel graduated with a bachelor s degree in political science and mathematics. He was an Academic All America and a three-time winner of the Brian McFarlane Award for academic and athletic accomplishments.
