Army, 4 About the Game The resilency and heart of the Bucknell women s basketball team has been on clear display in the last two weeks, as the Bison earned a come-from-behind victory over Lafayette and an overtime triumph at Holy Cross last week before dropping a heart-breaker to first-place Navy in two overtimes on Wednesday. The squad will rely on both of these attributes on Saturday, as it looks to conquer another challenge and improve to 4-2 in the Patriot League with a win over Army in a 7 p.m. contest at Sojka Pavilion. Live coverage of Saturday s game can be heard on the radio (WVBU 90.5 FM) and online at BucknellBison.com with Danny Will doing the play-by-play duties. Bison Vison will broadcoast the event, and all of Bucknell s home contests, free of charge on the Patriot League Network, and live stats can be found on BucknellBison.com.

Improve to 9-7 overall and 4-2 in the Patriot League. Improve to 5-2 overall and 2-1 in league action at home this season. Improve to 81-61 all-time at Sojka Pavilion. Earn its 32nd win over the Black Knights in the 53rd meeting between the two teams, and its first since March 5, 2011. Setting the Scene The Bison, who played several challenging opponents in the non-conference portion of the season, are currently 8-7 overall and 3-2 in the Patriot League. Each of their last two conference games has ended in overtime. Bucknell has scored 70+ points in each of its last four contests and is 7-1 when scoring in that range. Army is 0-1 when allowing that many points. The team ranks first in the league in defensive rebounds (28.9)and free throw percentage (.744), as well as second in three-point field goal percentage defense (.288). The Bison also rank third in blocked shots (3.5) and assists (15.3). Audrey Dotson ranks third in the Patriot League in scoring (17.7 ppg), while Shelby Romine ranks ninth (13.3). Claire DeBoer, a four-time Rookie of the Week, leads all Patriot League fresh- men in both scoring (10.9 ppg) and rebounding (7.4 rpg). Bucknell was voted seventh in the 2013-14 Patriot League Preseason Poll. Defending champion Navy was voted to the first-place spot. Shelby Romine and Audrey Dotson were chosen as Bucknell s co-captains ahead of the 2013-14 campaign. Romine will serve in the leadership position for the third consecutive season, while Dotson is a first-time captain. Aaron Roussell was hired as Bucknell s ninth head coach in April 2012. He led the Bison to the largest turnaround in program history during his debut campaign, and set a Bucknell women s basketball record for most wins by a first-year head coach. The Bison return three starters and eight letterwinners from a year ago. Lindsay Horbatuck, the leading rebounder in the Patriot League last season, and Alyssa Dunn both graduated from the starting five in May. Bucknell made huge strides in its defensive play last season, ranking first in the league and 15th nationally in field goal percentage defense (.345) and second in the conference and 35th in the country in three-point field goal percentage defense (.271). Bucknell finished the 2012-13 season with a record of 15-16 overall and 5-9 mark in the Patriot League.

Offensive execution was not in either team s favor in the Patriot League matchup with both Bucknell, which fell to 13-10 and 4-4 in the Patriot League, and Army, which improved to 17-6 and 6-2 in conference action, shooting 26 percent from the field. Bucknell had the 19-17 lead and Romine was up to 10 points at the break. The score didn t change much when play resumed. Nine minutes into the second stanza and the two squads had combined for a mere seven points. Romine found a way to put some more points on the board as she drove to the hoop and was fouled on the play with 5:46 remaining in the game. That sent the junior to the line where she collected her 1,000th point on her first free throw attempt. Romine shot 5-for-15 from the field and 5-for-6 from the free throw line. That clip exceeded the percentages put up by the team at 12-fof-45 (.267) overall and 10-for-16 (.625) from the line. Bucknell had just six field goals in each half. Army had similar struggles throughout, shooting 16-for-61 (.262) from the field. That percentage stood at just.200 at halftime. Simmers had two points on 1-for-11 shooting at the break before finishing the game with 14. Of that team high, 10 came in the game s final 5:28. Only she and Kelsey Minato, who also had 14 points on the night, scored for the Black Knights during that stretch. The duo took Army from a 28-28 tie after Romine s milestone free throws to the nine-point win. After finishing the game with 16 points, Romine improved her career total to 1,005. That ranks her 20th in program history and makes her the first Bison to register 1,000 since Lauren Schober during the 2008-09 season. About the Black Knights Army, which sits in a tie with American for second-place in the Patriot League, has played to a 12-4 record thus far, with its only losses coming at the hands of St. Francis N.Y. (56-53), Penn (67-57), Ohio State (59-56) and Navy (74-64). The team is 4-1 in conference play, having earned victories over Lafayette (66-49), Loyola (66-62 OT), Lehigh (74-63) and, most recently, Holy Cross (70-57). Interestingly, each of the Black Knights four defeats have been handed to them on the road. Kelsey Minato, last season s Patriot League Player and Rookie of the Year, currently leads the conference in scoring, averaging 20.4 points per game, including 23.0 in Army s first five league match-ups, and is also contributing 3.1 assists in each game. Jen Hazlett is also averaging in double-digits, scoring 14.0 points per game for the Black Knights, which Olivia Schretzman s 7.4 boards per contest leads the team on the glass. History vs. Army Bucknell has a 31-21 advantage in the all-time series against Army. Most of those wins have come in Lewisburg, where the Bison have an 18-7 advantage. The Black Knights hold a 14-13 edge when the two teams play at West Point. The 79 combined points scored in the last meeting between the two teams is the fewest in Bucknell-Army series history, breaking the previous mark of 88, set when the Bison won 44-40 at West Point on Feb. 16, 2011. Three of the last four games between Bucknell and Army have seen unusually high scoring totals, with the exception being last February s contest. In the three prior games, at least one team reached the 60-point mark. Prior to this stretch, neither team had scored 60 points since Feb. 24, 2007 when Army won 61-57. Bucknell is 1-6 against Army since 2004 when it scores 60 points or more. The last time the Bison defeated the Black Knights was in the Patriot League Tournament Quarterfinals on March 3, 2011. Bucknell has registered 16 Patriot League seasons at.500 or better. The last was in 2010-11 when the Bison finished with a 7-7 record. The last season at better than.500 was 2008-09 when they went 8-6 in conference action. Bucknell has won two Patriot League regular-season titles (1995-96, 2006-07) and two tournament titles (2001-02, 2007-08). Bucknell is 90-65 (.581) in Patriot League regular-season games played at home. It is 42-36 (.538) in league games at Sojka Pavilion. The Bison hold a 68-91 (.428) record when playing conference games on the road. Patriot League Opponents Bucknell will face Boston University for the first time in program history this season, but the Bison have a long history with many of thier other conference opponents. Bucknell has faced six of its Patriot League foes at least 50 times and none more often than Lehigh with 73 previous bouts. Bucknell and Lafayette, which is the Bison s oldest opponent, have squared off 72 times including their first meeting on Feb. 19, 1977. Bucknell has seen the most conference success against Colgate with a.650 (39-21) winning percentage. Navy, who won last year s Patriot Leauge Tournament, earned the top spot for the second season in a row, while newcomer Boston University garned three first-place votes and took the third spot. Loyola Maryland, the other new face in the Patriot Leauge, came in at eighth place, just below Bucknell Last Time Out Co-captains Audrey Dotson and Shelby Romine each threw up buzzer-beating shots to keep their squad alive through two overtime periods, but the Bucknell women s basketball team couldn t outlast Navy on Wednesday night, dropping a heart-breaking 94-92 decision after 50 minutes of toe-to-toe action at Sojka Pavilion. The Bison, who played to an overtime win at Holy Cross on Saturday, fall to 8-7 overall and 3-2 in Patriot League action with the loss. The Midshipmen, who maintain sole possession of first place in the conference standings with the victory, improve to 13-3 overall and 5-0 in league play. Dotson led a quartet of Bison who scored in double-figures, tallying a career-high 28 points on 12-of-23 (.522) shooting from the field and 4-of-6 (.667) from the line. The junior also grabbed seven rebounds in 47 minutes of playing time. Romine scored 17 points, 12 of which came in the two overtime periods, and dished out six assists, while freshmen Megan McGurk and Claire DeBoer each contributed 15 points. DeBoer, who shot 5-of-12 (.417) from the field and hit all five of her free throws, also collected ten rebounds for her fourth career double-double. Some of the most exciting basketball of the night occurred in the second 20 minutes of the contest, as the evenly-matched squads battled for each and every bucket, with neither team able to build more than a fivepoint advantage. While Navy owned the edge for the first six minutes, the remainder of the stanza told a different story, as the Bison and the Mids played to nine ties and exchanged leads on sixteen occasions during that time frame. Bucknell found itself up 71-70 with 1:25 on the clock in regulation, but Navy went 3-for-4 from the line over the course of the next minute, reclaiming a two-point edge with just nine seconds to play. With the game on the line the Bison exhibited both their heart and their offensive prowess, as McGurk sent the ball down the court to Romine, who feed it to Dotson in the paint. Fighting through traffic, she spun to her left and threw up a shot, connecting on the layup to tie the score at 73-73 and send the game into overtime. At the end of the first overtime Navy held an 82-80 lead but with just eight seconds on the clock, the ball was in Bucknell s possession. In an eerily similar play that spoke volumes about the fortitude and heart of the young Bison squad, Romine raced up the court, drove down the lane and tossed up a layup that went in just as the buzzer sounded, putting five more minutes of overtime on the clock. Bucknell was within one with five seconds remaining in the second overtime, but Alix Membreno hit her last shot from the charity stripe and Romine s desperation heave was just short, giving the Mids a hard-earned 94-92 win over the Bison.

The Bison hit a sizziling 64.8 percent of their shots in their home-opening win against Binghamton in November, and have followed that up with strong performances from the field in their wins over Cornell (53.3%), Youngstown State (39.0%), Towson (51.1%), Longwood (42.9%) and Colgate (48.3%), Lafayette (35.8%) and Holy Cross (45.9%). At the Buzzer Bucknell has brought each of its last two opponents to overtime, earning an 83-79 win over Holy Cross last Saturday and dropping a 94-92 decision to Navy in double overtime on Wednesday. The last time Bucknell played more than one overtime was on Dec. 4, 2007, when it defeated George Mason 67-64 at home in two extra periods. More impressively however, each of the three overtime periods were forced when a Bison hit a shot at the buzzer. Claire DeBoer drained a three on Saturday, allowing the Bison to triumph over the Crusaders, while both Audrey Dotson and Shelby Romine connected on pressured lay-ups to keep their team alive for 50 minutes against the Mids. Bucknelll holds a 9-9 record in Patriot League games that have gone into overtime. Rookie of the Week The awards keep coming for Bucknell women s basketball forward Claire DeBoer (Grosse Pointe, Mich./ Grosse Pointe South), as she was named the Anaconda Sports Patriot League Rookie of the Week on Monday, earning the honor for the fourth time this season. DeBoer s selection also marks the fifth time in seven weeks that the award has been earned by a Bison, as she previously garnered the accolade on Dec. 2, Dec. 23 and Jan. 6, while classmate Megan McGurk (West Chester, Pa./Academy of Notre Dame) was recognized on Dec. 9, a testament to the strength of Bucknell s freshman class. After averaging a double-double (16.5 ppg, 13.0 rpg) in the first week of the Patriot League season, DeBoer continued to impress in the second week of action, averaging 14.5 ppg and 9.5 rpg to help Bucknell to its two wins. In Saturday s game at Holy Cross, the rookie hit a buzzer-beating three-pointer with less than two seconds remaining in the contest, sending the game into overtime where she scored four points to help the Bison to an 83-79 win over the Crusaders. DeBoer led Bucknell in both scoring and rebounding against Holy Cross, finishing with 20 points and a game-high 15 rebounds. DeBoer has scored in double-digits in seven of the 12 contests in which she has started, and continues to lead all Patriot League freshmen in both scoring and rebounding, ranking 17th in the Patriot League with 10.9 points per game and fourth in the conference with 7.4 boards per contest. She also ranks second in rebounding (11.0 rpg) and eighth in scoring (15.4 ppg) in Patriot League competition, once again leading all rookies. Making History Shelby Romine, who led the team with 23 points against both Penn and Longwood, continues to surpass many of Bucknell s top performers in the program s record book, reaching several milestones along the way. She played her 100th game in orange and blue at American, made her 100th career start against Colgate, and her performance against Lafayette made her the 10th all-time scorer in program history.the forward is also six three-pointers away from moving into third in all-time shots from long-range, and her seven helpers against the Leopards moved her into third place in career assists (378). Double Threat After opening her junior campaign with a bang against Pittsburgh, leading all players with 23 points and 14 rebounds, Audrey Dotson continues to put up impressive numbers on both ends of the court. The forward, who is currently ranked third in the conference in scoring with 17.7 point per game, has been especially impressive in Patriot League action, averaging 17.8 points per game and 5.8 rebounds per contest. Dotson, who scored 20 points at Colgate and led all scorers with 24 points against Lafayette, tallied a career-high 28 points on 12-of-23 (.522) shooting against Navy on Wednesday, and has scored in double-digits in all 13 games in which she has started, Hot at Home Bucknell has won four of its six games in Sojka Pavilion this season, and every time the team has earned a victory on the court at home, at least two different Bison have scored in double-digits. Shelby Romine (25), Audrey Dotson (22), Claire Maree O Bryan (12) and Sheaira Jones (10) each turned in a 10+ point performance in the Bison s 89-48 win over Binghamton, while Dotson (22), DeBoer (15) and Romine (11) all scored in double-figures to lead Bucknell to a 66-41 win over Youngstown State. In the team s 78-62 win over Towson, Dotson (22), Romine (14), Megan McGurk (14), DeBoer (13) and Jones (10) each reached the magic number, marking the first time that five Bison have scored 10+ points since Jan. 11, 2012 at Colgate. Most recently, in Bucknell s come-from-behind victory over Lafayette last Wednesday, both Dotson (24) and Romine (15) surpassed the 10-point mark. Leading the Way Senior Shelby Romine and junior Audrey Dotson will serve as Bucknell s team captains for the 2013-14 season. While Dotson assumes the role for the first time, Romine becomes just the second Bison to be named captain for three seasons. In 2011-12 Romine was the first sophomore to be named a captain since K.C. Vlah in 1993-94. Vlah went on to serve in the leadership role in her junior and senior campaigns as well.

His 15 wins set a Bucknell women s basketball record for victories in a coach s rookie season, and his work with the Bison was recognized nationally, as he was named a finalist for the WBCA Spalding Maggie Dixon Division I Rookie Coach of the Year award. Only two other coaches Cindy Connelley (1983-84) and Juliene Simpson (1991-97) improved Bucknell s wins total in their first season. Connelley s nine wins was a one-game improvement, while Simpson had a five-win improvement with her debut record of 7-20.
