CELEBRATING 18 YEARS OF SINGLES GOLF IN AMERICA Grand Strand/Myrtle Beach Chapter - American Singles Golf Association September 2010 President s Letter My hat is off to those of you who have been golfing throughout this hot, muggy summer. I'm looking forward to a "cool down" and resuming "laughter on the links". We have to be the most fortunate people on the planet to have landed here. The camaraderie and joy you bring to our gatherings are truly celebrations of life. Mountain Fall Weekend, October 15th to 17th at Lake Lure's Rumbling Bald Resort has been a popular draw the past few years. Presently, we have 9 chapter members registered for golf and fun in the mountains of Western North Carolina. Remember the movie, "Dirty Dancing"? It was filmed on the site of this outing. So let's dance the night away. Sometimes you just have to plan ahead. This is definitely the case with ASGA's New Year's Event, December 29th to January 1st. The location in Florida will be announced shortly. Bill Doughty came up with the brilliant idea of renting a mini van, holding 8 people plus golf clubs and suitcases. If you are interested and plan to be away for Christmas make sure your return flight allows a few days to regroup for a December 29th departure. Mark your calendars for ASGA's Battle at the Beach, November 11th to 14th. Single golfers from around the country will stay in the Marriott at Grand Dunes in Myrtle Beach, playing the Meadowlands and Farmstead courses. Optional golf outings are at Burning Ridge and Arcadian Shores. The Dinner Dance on Saturday is a DO NOT MISS EVENT. Our chapter members will be offered prices that do not include a stay at the Marriott. You can choose to stay at the resort if you wish. Party Master, Dick Harper, hosted a fabulous Bar-B-Q, July 31st, with bocce, badminton, dancing and laughter. Since he flips burgers and dogs like a pro we can add "Grill Master" to his slew of titles. You had to see it to believe it. As always, our Divine Ms. Eileen had a hand in running the show. Rule Number One. Never, never, never miss a party! So y'all come to Steve Sikula's Pool Bash, Saturday, September 25th. And you just know I'll have a party at my place after the Heritage Golf Outing, September 19th. Check the Social and Golf Columns for more Party Central info. Everyone's talking golf! Why not? Our golf chairs, Nancy, Bill and Karen give us a smorgasbord of events..weekends, weekdays, twilight. Bring us your ideas. we'd love to add more to our golf and social calendar. Your enthusiasm is contagious. Keep right on spreading the good news of Myrtle Beach ASGA. May you always have a smile on your lips and a song in your heart. ~Mary Ann Sanborn, President Golf News The first outing last month on August 3rd at OYSTER BAY was a HUGE success! Twenty players from Myrtle Beach paired up with sixteen guests from the Wilmington chapter for what may have been the first annual "TWILIGHT GOLF INVITA- TIONAL". A moderating sea breeze enhanced the natural scenic beauty of Oyster Bay, with its picture postcard vistas of salt water marshes. Combined with nicely groomed course conditions it made for a truly memorable experience. But what really put it over the top were the players. Our brothers and sisters from Wilmington are as good at having fun as Upcoming Events Include (see SinglesGolf.com/events) - Sacramento and Seattle's Eagle Crest Resort Weekend - September 10-12, 2010. Location: Bend, Oregon - Asheville's Mountain Fall Weekend - October 15-17, 2010. Location: Lake Lure, NC - Battle at the Beach - November 11-14, 2010. There were many interesting pairings. For example: John Travis from Wilmington, playing with Sandra Saunders from Myrtle Beach. John, knowing Sandra for about two hours, asked Sandra to go steady with him. Sandra asked him if he wanted to marry her. When John asked her, when, Sandra said, tomorrow. Then John asked if she had a ring, and when she said no, he declined. I guess you have to be prepared for anything when you are in a singles golf group. It was nearly dark at eight when we quit. Some of us didn't quite finish eighteen, but I'm sure everyone who played had a wonderful time. I know I did. ~Bill Doughty, wefrck@yahoo.com, 843-234-1838 On August 7 th we played Heathland at Legends. Fifteen of us ventured out, but only 12 finished all 18 holes. It was a little too warm for some of us. Our contest was closest to the pin. Unfortunately, the ladies didn t quite make the green, so both prizes were awarded to the men. Closest to the pin was Jean LaRoche, and somewhat close to the pin was Rich Borakove. Congratulations to both. ~Nancy Feller, nfeller@verizon.net, 843-281-2982 & Karen Meyer, kam@sccoast.net, 843-234-1854 On August 15th, after a hearty breakfast buffet, fourteen of us played PARKLAND. The weather cooperated with a nice breeze and slightly overcast conditions. We had a perfect split of seven men and seven women. The course was wet, but we were allowed to ride the fairways. It was a nice day for golf followed by lunch and socializing in the clubhouse. ~Bill Doughty At our NINE AND DINE on Aug. 18th, we had twelve players including newcomers, Jean Laroche, Charlie McGarren and Donna Merrill. Welcome! Also playing were Toni Lacroix, Pat Greer, Pat Rossi, Birgit Carpenter, Jane Kukafka, Ray Nix, Steve Sikula, Dick Harper, and Bill Doughty. We teed off at three o'clock and played the front side of MOORLAND. The greens, as always, were in great shape; true, but very challenging. ~Bill Doughty Our final event in August is at Heritage on Tuesday, the 31 st, with a 3:00 pm teetime. Cost is only $20.00. Take advantage of this great rate on a beautiful golf course. There are a few spots left. To sign up, contact Bill Doughty at wefrck@yahoo.com or (843)234-1838. Golf Future Events In September there will be a TWILIGHT GOLF event on Tuesday, the 7th. The course has not yet been decided. Watch your email for an announcement. ~Bill Doughty On September 11, ASGA will be playing the Parkland course at Legends GC; show time is 8:30am; $32/$39. Tickets for breakfast and lunch and two drinks will be provided. Contact Bill Doughty, wefrek@yahoo.com, 843-234-1838 or Nancy Feller, nfeller@verison.net, 843-281-2982 to sign up if you haven t already. ONLY A TRUE GOLFER WILL UNDERSTAND THIS... Don't buy a putter until you've had a chance to throw it. Never try to keep more than 300 separate thoughts in your mind during your swing. When your shot has to carry over a water hazard, you can either hit one more club or two more balls. If you're afraid a full shot might reach the green while the foursome ahead of you is still putting out, you have two options: you can immediately shank a lay-up or you can wait until the green is clear and top a ball halfway there. The less skilled the player, the more likely he is to share his ideas about the golf swing. No matter how bad you are playing, it is always possible to play worse. Everyone replaces his divot after a perfect approach shot. A golf match is a test of your skill against your opponents' luck. It is surprisingly easy to hole a fifty foot putt.. for a 10. Nonchalant putts count the same as chalant putts. It's not a gimme if you're still away. The shortest distance be tween any two points on a golf course is a straight line that passes directly through the center of a very large tree. There are two kinds of bounces; unfair bounces and bounces just the way you meant to play it. You can hit a two acre fairway 10% of the time and a two inch branch 90% of the time. If you really want to get better at golf, go back and take it up at a much earlier age. Since bad shots come in groups of three, a fourth bad shot is actually the beginning of the next group of three. Every time a golfer makes a birdie, he must subsequently make two triple bogeys to restore the fundamental equilibrium of the universe. To calculate the speed of a player's downswing, multiply the speed of his backswing by his handicap; i.e., back-swing 20 mph, handicap 15, downswing = 300 mph. There are two things you can learn by stopping your back-swing at the top and checking the position of your hands: how many hands you have, and which one is wearing the glove. Hazards attract; fairways repel. You can put a draw on the ball, you can put a fade on the ball, but no golfer can put a straight on the ball. A ball you can see in the rough from 50 yards away is not yours. It's easier to get up at 6:00 AM to play golf than at 10:00 to mow the yard

ASGA POOL PARTY Saturday, September 25 th at Steve Sikula s in Kingston Plantation (Directions will be sent later) We ll start at 2:00 PM and end later. CELEBRATING 18 YEARS OF SINGLESGOLF IN AMERICA AMERICAN SINGLES GOLF ASSOCIATION SEPTEMBER 2010 The national office of the American Singles Golf Association (ASGA) has announced another great opportunity for singles to meet, greet, then battle it out on great golf courses. Venue: Myrtle Beach, USA. With somewhere between 80 and 100 golf courses in the area (depending on who you speak with), Myrtle Beach is simply the natural place to be when it comes to playing golf in the Fall. The weather is cool but not cold and the sandy soil is ideal for grass-growing conditions. All-in-all, mix the beautiful weather with the great golf and many friends from across the country, and you ve got the making for a great golf weekend. This year, we ll return to the Marriott Grande Dunes, located right on the beach in Myrtle Beach. It s a AAA Four-Diamond hotel and is ranked as one of the Top 500 resorts in the world by Travel+Leisure magazine. We ve lined-up some great courses nearby (Meadowland Golf Course and Farmstead Golf Links) and have arranged for 10:30am shotgun starts each morning, so you ll have plenty of time to complete your round before the sun goes down. In addition, there is optional day-of-arrival golf at Burning Ridge and dayof-departure golf at Arcadian Shores. Date: November 11-14. Cost: Only $399 if you have a roommate, play two rounds of golf, enjoy six food functions, one of which is the Saturday night dinner... filet mignon and salmon and a Friday night cookout. In addition, if you purchased one of our packages and attended this event last year, you ll have a $25 loyalty credit working in your favor! So to get all the details on this fun-filled event, visit the website at SinglesGolf.com/BattleAtTheBeach or complete the registration form enclosed with your monthly newsletter. If you d like to register over the phone, call us at 704-889-4600. New Year s Location To Be Announced Later this month, we ll announce the location for our New Year s event. A recent poll was made asking members to give us input for a location. Results: 52% wanted to support the folks in the Florida panhandle (i.e. Panama City with Gulf Shores / Sandestin suggested), 28 percent wanted Daytona and the the final 20% went to returning to Orlando. Other suggestions were south Florida (Naples area), Sarasota, New Orleans, and a few other southern cities. ASGA looks at a number of elements in putting together a New Year s event such as nearby airport, available courses, weather, hotel accommodations and proximity to where the attendees come from. If we can have it in a location where 50-60 percent of the attendees can drive to the event, we ll have a much larger turnout than if it s a location where 90% of the attendees would have to fly. Stay tuned! Denver ASGA Up and Running Congratulations to Dawn Lindsay and all the volunteers who ve helped put Denver ASGA on the map. The new chapter hit 45 new members in no time flat. Denver s a great golfing area, plus you have the extra benefit of your ball flying an additional 100 yards! Thank you, Dawn, for your efforts. We hope ASGA has a positive impact on many lives in the Denver area. We re Starting New Chapters The national office is on a mission to start new chapters anywhere there s a need - - and golf courses. We re working on New Haven, CT, St. Louis, MO, Columbus, OH and Buffalo, NY, Virginia Beach, VA, Omaha, NE, Des Moines, IA, Springfield, IL, Boise, ID, Portland, OR, Pittsburgh, PA, Boston, MA, Harrisburg, PA, Davenport, IA, Wichita, KS and Salt Lake City, UT. We ve set-up a full section on our website dedicated to starting a new chapter: SinglesGolf.com/start If you have friends, colleagues, relatives, etc. in a distant city and think they d be an ideal candidate for getting a new ASGA chapter started, please have them contact us. - - Tom Alsop, President / Founder, ASGA Phone 704-889-4600 or 1-888-GOLFMATE GolfASGA@aol.com
