January match Well, our January match day was a bit warmer than you would expect for January, but a warm match day with a slight breeze is always welcome, even if the humidity was high. We know the black powder shooters always enjoy a breeze. During the safety briefing, Mad Dane mentioned the Panhandle Cowboys officer elections are coming up at the April match. He asked that we be thinking about who we would like to be our club officers for the next term. Pancho Via indicated he would like to step down as our treasurer, a job he has been doing for longer than most of us can remember. He believes our treasurer should be able to attend more of our matches than he has been able to attend in recent years. He would also give a new treasurer all of the help and guidance needed to do the job. Ned Whiskey has said he will not seek the nomination to continue as Vice President. The other Panhandle Cowboys officers have indicated they are willing to continue in their present positions, although nominations for these positions will be accepted by and/or for anyone. So, two incumbents, our Vice President and Treasurer, are not seeking reelection. The positions of President, Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer, Territorial Governor, and Match Director are up for nomination. If you are happy with the way the Panhandle Cowboys are going we can keep our present officers who are willing to continue in their present positions. Nominations for our elected positions will be accepted at the February, and March matches, or you may email your nominations to High Card at gbaughman@juno.com. It was pointed out that some members of the our Board of Directors and volunteers, Trophy Wrangle Grundy and PC scorekeeper for example, come to the range with match materials in their vehicles and need to make extra trips to their vehicles for Panhandle Cowboys business. Therefore, it is respectfully requested that the parking spots from the equipment container to the sign-up area of the shed be saved for them. Even though there are no officially assigned parking spaces, it would be a tremendous convenience for those concerned. If you could help these cowboys out in this regard, it would be greatly appreciated. Slick will not be shooting with us for about 18 months or so. He has joined the Florida National Guard and is off to basic training, followed by jump school, and Special Forces training. He will keep in touch with us Panhandle Cowboys through his dad Dead Eye Blue. We are proud of you Slick, serving your Country is an honor. Speaking of Dead Eye Blue, he was not as spry as he has been at previous matches. Seems he has suffered a back injury and he has to be very careful about what he does. 2

Several of us old timers have had and/or have back issues and we, if I may use the expression respectfully, feel your pain. Just take it as easy as possible and get better pard. High Card and Dixie Chick handled the scoring for the January match. High Card and Grundy took care of match sign-up. Navajo Kid brought his trailer for steel and prop hauling for match set-up and take-down. Mad Dane admitted to writing the stages, and there was only one call for get a rope. Thanks to everyone who did waddie chores for match set-up and take-down, and thanks to everyone who donated door prizes. And, of course, we thank everyone who participated in running each posse. High Card gives a special thanks to Jeb Stuart for the loan of his hat. It seems High Card forgot his hat and had to be sure the posse score keeper did not confuse him with Jeb Stuart in scoring, as according to High Card, the hat made them look alike. (Wonder where High Card found that magic mirror.) There was no side match as the weather looked as if rain was coming at side match time. SieGE AT ST. AUGUSTINE The Florida State Championship match was held in St. Augustine, January 9 13, 2013. Several Panhandle Cowboys made the journey to St. Augustine for the match and our cowboys and cowgirls did well, as you can see below. Outlaw No Limit 6 th Place Silver Senior Duelist Dal Sackett 9 th Place Elder Statesman Cody Breaker 16 th Place B Western Ladies Tac Hammer 1 st Place Ladies Frontier Cartridge Sammy Jo 3 rd Place Frontier Cartridge Ranger John Paxton 6 th Place Frontier Cartridge Duelist Hollifer A Dollar 6 th Place Clean Sweep Hollifer A Dollar The match results for Siege at St. Augustine did not indicate the Florida State Champion for each category as this is written (January 20 th ). However, I believe we can identify at least one 3

Florida State Champion in the person of Tac Hammer. We know she lives in Florida and placed 1 st in B Western Ladies. Congratulations Tac Hammer. Good Shooting! Congratulations to our other Panhandle Cowboys, too. It was a good representation from the Panhandle Cowboys and our cowboys and cowgirls did well. Gun shows In spite of the liberal politicians efforts, aided by their liberal media co-conspirators, to curtail the legal possession of military style look-a-like firearms and high capacity magazines, the firearms and related equipment industry is selling everything they can manufacture. As you know by now certain firearms are in very short supply, if available at all. The same goes for ammunition and ammunition components, especially for the 5.56 Nato/.223 Remington. Even Sturm, Ruger and Company, Inc. has announced that they will not be accepting orders in the year 2013, as orders for their production capacity for 2013 was filled near the end of 2012. The last gun show in Mobile was a sardine can, standing room only proposition. If you were able to get close to the vendor s tables to see items for sale you were one of the lucky ones. At any rate, here is a list of gun shows within a more or less driving distance of Pensacola. There may be other gun shows than those listed below, but they are not listed at the internet sources used to compile the gun show list. February 9 & 10 Robertsdale, Alabama Baldwin County Fairgrounds February 9 & 10 Panama City, Florida Bay County Fairgrounds February 23 & 24 Fort Walton Beach, Florida N.W. Florida Fairgrounds March 2 & 3 Dothan, Alabama National Peanut Festival Facility April 13 & 14 Panama City, Florida Bay County Fairgrounds April 20 & 21 Pensacola, Florida Pensacola Interstate Fairgrounds May 4 & 5 Robertsdale, Alabama Baldwin County Fairgrounds The Panhandle Cowboys will be attending and promoting Cowboy Action Shooting at the Pensacola gun shows. If you can help with manning the table and promoting CAS, for one or both days, please contact our gun show coordinator Mad Dane at dlangley@gulftel.com. cowboy lexicon This month we will pick up on some expressions used in western movies and TV shows. You temper awful quick you get mad quickly 4

String em up hang him Fidgety nervous A thirst like an old dry mud hole really, really thirsty Cheap imitation of a leather slapper a young cowboy who is trying to be tough Six-up a team of six horses Leg weary tired Squaw man a white man married to an Indian woman As reliable as a lead steer in a stampede unreliable, cannot be depended on All floundered out tired Wisdom brain school teacher February match February match February 10 th Match set up time 7:30 to 8:00am Match sign up time 8:00 to 8:45am Mandatory safety briefing 9:00am Match begins 9:30am Match fee - $15.00 Morning waddies match fee - $10.00 Please fill in the requested information on the match entry form, as this information is needed for reporting purposes to the Escambia River Gun Club. February side match The side match for February will be a Wild Bunch Side Match. You will need a Model 1911 type pistol chambered for.45acp and 3 magazines and 15 rounds of ammo. You will, also, need your match rifle/carbine with 10 rounds of ammo, and a Model 1897/97 Winchester pump shotgun (or replica thereof) loaded with 5 rounds, and some extra shotgun ammo on your person in case it is needed. If you do not have the M1911 or the Model 1897/97, not to worry as there will be enough of them 5

around and you can always borrow the firearm(s) you are missing. Also, High Card and Navajo Kid have planned a twist not normally seen in a Wild Bunch Side Match. (Did someone mention a rope?) December cowboy Our December cowboy was born Harry Leonard Albershart on September 22, 1929. It is difficult to trace an accurate background, if there is one, on the man who became Allan Lane. It seems the movie companies he worked for simply took an ounce of truth and manufactured an impressive history for the actor. So we will dispense with his background and concentrate on what can be verified. Allan Lane appeared in his first movie in 1929 titled Not Quite Decent. He appeared in 23 films through 1932. He then disappeared from films until 1936 doing whatever it was he did between screen appearances. In 1936 he began acting again, appearing in a total of 114 films. His last film was a small supporting role in Posse from Hell starring Audie Murphy in 1961. He appeared as Red Ryder in 7 films with Republic Pictures. Allan Lane hit the zenith of his acting career as Rocky Lane in 38 Rocky Lane films at Republic. His last Rocky Lane film was in 1953 titled El Paso Stampede. Incidentally, his horse Black Jack was originally owned by Bill Elliott and was named Thunder. Bill Elliott sold the horse to Allan for his Rocky Lane movie series. The Red Ryder/Rocky Lane gunbelt used by Allan Lane was the same one used by Bill Elliott in his portrayal of Red Ryder. There were seven versions of this gunbelt over the years, all being worn by Bill Elliott. Only the last version was used by Allan Lane. 6

In 1945 Allan Lane appeared as Allan Lane in the Roy Rogers film Bells of Rosarita. In 1950, he appeared as Allan Rocky Lane in the Roy Rogers color film Trail of Robin Hood. He also appeared in the last chapter of the last Republic serial, Man with a Steel Whip, in 1954. The footage for this appearance was taken from the movie Daredevils of the West. Allan Lane s final performance was as the voice of the horse Mr. Ed in the CBS television series running from 1961 to 1966. Contrary to what was the norm for B Western actors, Allan Lane was not well liked as an actor. Many of his co-stars and supporting actors and actresses found him to be egotistical, lacking a sense of humor about himself, too much of a perfectionist, and wanting to be in charge. These characteristics carried over to his voicing for Mr. Ed. Yet, other actors of his acquaintance said Allan Lane would unwind after a day s work and would be just as nice and caring as anyone. He also made quite a number of visits to children s hospitals and insisted these visits not be publicized as he was not making the visits for the publicity. About 1956 Allan Lane starred in the TV series Red Ryder. It lasted for only 39 episodes. When Allan Lane took the job as the voice of Mr. Ed, he considered the role to be an embarrassment as an actor; as a result his role as the voice of Mr. Ed was an uncredited role. However, when the series became successful he wanted his name in the show credits. He was offered an increase in salary instead. Allan Lane took the salary increase and his role as the voice of Mr. Ed remained uncredited. In his later years, Allan Lane contacted many of the people he had worked with and apologized to them for his attitude and actions for all those many years. Allan Lane passed away on October 27, 1973. Jeb Stuart correctly identified Allan Rocky Lane as our December cowboy. January Bpcr match results Only three shooters showed up for the January BPCR match. There was strong competition that weekend from the Pensacola Gun Show. The three attendees decided to do a little practicing instead of having an actual match. The next scheduled BPCR match will be March 24 th on Range 1. Previous BPCR matches were held on Range 4, but they have now been moved to Range 1. To shoot the BPCR match, in the Traditional category, you will need an exposed hammer single 7

shot rifle/carbine chambered in a black powder rifle cartridge in the 2.5, or so, length. For the Open category, rifles/carbines chambered in the pistol-size black powder cartridges are required; cartridges like.44-40 Winchester,.38-40 Winchester,.45 Colt, etc. (Yes, the.44-40 (.44 WCF),.38-40 (.38 WCF) were originally introduced as rifle cartridges and are still listed by ammunition manufacturers as rifle cartridges, but we CAS shooters call them pistol-size cartridges.) Black powder or a black powder substitute is the required powder, also, only lead bullets are allowed. Match set-up time is 7:30 8:00am, with a safety briefing at 8:45am and shooting beginning at 9:15am. Contact High Card at gbaughman@juno.com for additional info. January gun show Mad Dane said he got to the Pensacola Interstate Fairgrounds at 6:30am and 15 people were in line waiting for the gun show to open. He said the gun show opened the doors at 7:45am and the line was all the way back to the gate a distance of some 200 yards and the line stayed that long until about 2:00pm. Mad Dane said WEAR-TV was at the gun show and he was in about a 10 second segment on the Saturday evening news. The Panhandle Cowboys tables were manned by Capt Bobbie D, Wild Country, Grundy, and Mad Dane on Saturday. On Sunday, the Panhandle Cowboys were represented by Capt Bobbie D, Wild Country, Cassidy Jane, Sammy Jo, and Mad Dane. Our Panhandle Cowboys representatives were kept busy promoting Cowboy Action Shooting. Some old guns were seen and about 10 tons of ammunition was sold by the various vendors. Patrons of the gun show were packed in like sardines both days. January cowboy Our January cowboy starred in the first hour long western on television; in fact the program was the first hour long dramatic series lasting more than one season. It was also, the first television series to be produced by a major motion picture studio. His western series ran from 1955 to 1963 (minus the 1958-1959 TV season due to a contract dispute). If you know who our cowboy is, email Rocky Lane at winchesteraa@cox.net with your answer. Wild bunch firearm changes Changes have been made to the approved shotgun list for Wild Bunch competition by adding the Winchester Model 12 shotgun. The following is quoted on page 10 of the Wild Bunch 8

Action Shooting Handbook, Version 5, January 2013. SHOTGUN REQUIREMENTS Winchester 1897 pump in 12 gauge, original or replica. Civilian or Military style. IAC 93/ 97 reproduction Winchester is also approved. This shotgun may be identified by the numbers 93/97 on the left side of the barrel and the words IAC Billerica, MA on the right side of the barrel. Original Winchester 1893 shotguns were declared unsafe by the manufacturer and are NOT legal for use in Wild Bunch Action Shooting matches. The Winchester Model 12 pump in 12 gauge is also allowed. If using a Model 12 see the extra safety procedure required. The extra safety procedure is on page 11and 17 of the Wild Bunch Action Shooting Handbook, and is quoted as follows: Shooters using the Model 12 shotgun must follow this additional safety procedure: Under the direct supervision of the TO/CRO on the firing line, they must point the muzzle in a safe direction and pull the trigger. If the hammer falls, SDQ. Failure to follow this procedure is a SDQ. It is the shooter s responsibility to ensure this procedure is followed before beginning the course of fire. Of course, SDQ means stage disqualification. adios Well, this is pretty much it for this month. Be Safe and Shoot Straight. 9
