1. INTRODUCTION What is the Concert? Every year CSOD students, teachers, parents and committee members work tirelessly to produce an end of year recital that showcases all of the talent and enthusiasm that makes up our school. The concert is held over 2 nights and is enjoyed by all involved. The concert entails: (1) Two Acts consisting of class items class items are dances involving the students in your child s class (and sometimes combines two or more classes together); and (2) A third Act that is the finale the finale involves the whole school working together to tell a story through dance. As you are all most likely aware by now, the finale theme will be AN ARABIAN TALE an adaptation of the much-loved Disney classic Aladdin. Please see the section titled Finale An Arabian Tale for more information. Those students who are in Prep or higher at school will be invited to participate in the finale. Involvement is not compulsory, however it is a lot of fun and a good way for the school to bond and grow in community spirit. Please notify your teacher ASAP if you do not wish your child to participate in the finale. Why participate in the Concert? Performing in concerts was always the most exciting part of the year for me as a student. Not only does the experience help students with their self-confidence, presentation and performance skills, it also gives students the opportunity to show their friends and families what they ve learnt during the year! How much commitment is involved? One question commonly asked is how much commitment is required by students and their parents in the lead up to the concert? Students will be required to attend their normal classes, and if performing in the finale, will also be required to attend weekly rehearsals for their allocated scene. These finale classes will range between 45 minutes and 1 hour (see the Recital Timetable attached to this guide for all class times). There will also be 3 combined Sunday rehearsals that are compulsory for all students in the finale, as well as a full Dress Rehearsal at Karralyka Theatre (see pages 5, 6 & 8 for details). Students not performing in the finale will be required to attend the last Sunday rehearsal and full Dress Rehearsal only. Page 2

2. CONCERT DATES & LOCATION This year s concert will be held on Friday 25 November at 7.30pm and Saturday 26 November at 7pm at Karralyka Centre, Mines Road, Ringwood. All students performing will be required to be at the theatre by:- 6.30pm on Friday 25 November 6.00pm on Saturday 26 November 3. COST Most costs for the concert have been covered in your term fees. However, for those students on student or family limits, additional costume levies of $20 per extra item will be charged as follows: Student Limit The first 4 items are free, thereafter a levy of $20 per item will be charged Family Limit The first 8 items are free, thereafter a levy of $20 per item (2 children) will be charged Family Limit The first 12 items are free, thereafter a levy of $20 per item (3 children will be charged or more) Please ensure that your fees are paid by the due date. If you have any trouble paying your fees please contact our treasurer, Kerrie Kerr. It is CSOD s strict policy that audience tickets for the recital will not be able to be purchased until all fees are paid. Page 3

4. AN ARABIAN TALE Synopsis Aladdin is a street-urchin who lives with his faithful monkey friend, Abu, in the large and busy town of Agrabah. When Princess Jasmine gets tired of being forced to remain in the Palace that overlooks the city, she sneaks out to the marketplace, where she accidentally meets Aladdin. Under the orders of the evil Jafar (the Sultan s advisor), Aladdin becomes caught up in Jafar s plot to rule the land with the aid of a mysterious lamp. Legend has it that only a person who is a diamond in the rough can retrieve the lamp from the Cave of Wonders. Aladdin might fit that description, but that s not enough to marry the princess who must (by law) marry a prince. Scenes Rehearsals are well under way for An Arabian Tale. Students have been allocated into various scenes by Miss Sarah, Miss Danni and Miss Kate. Please check the notice board if you are unsure. Main characters Congratulations to the following students who will be performing as lead roles in An Arabian Tale: Aladdin Abu ALADDIN PRINCESS JASMINE GENIE JAFAR MAGIC CARPET ABU SULTAN IAGO ABBEY THOMAS IMOGEN ALLCHIN SOPHIE RUSSELL BINDI BATES LUCY SMITH BRITTANY CUBITT KYRA HOUSTON MELODIE GOLDSMITH Iago Sultan CAVE Jasmine Jafar Genie Magic Carpet Page 4

This is a strict requirement of Maroondah City Council and Karralyka Theatre Management. If you would like to remain back stage please ensure your name is on the Helpers List (see page 10 below) Once the students have found their dressing room, they need to assemble their things in the dressing room and hang their costumes (in a costume bag) on the racks provided). The stage manager will make an announcement to call everybody on stage for a meeting just after arrival time. Students then return to their dressing room. When you are called to the back stage area in readiness for your performance please go immediately. If you have not been called please do not get in the way of others by hanging around dressing room doors or hallways. 1 parent will be required to accompany each group onto the side stage area and then escort them back to the dressing room. Younger groups will require 2 escorts. Throughout the rehearsal the students will be permitted to sit in the theatre to watch the performance. Makeup We require all students to arrive on Photo Day and the Friday and Saturday night concert dates in full makeup. Please see the attached page outlining the colours and application requirements. Hair For the concert this year, hair must be pulled back neatly into a bun. For senior students (12 years and over), a braid may be worn at the front of the head from RIGHT to LEFT. What you will need to create the perfect bun: 1. Hairnets 2. Hair pins (strong bun pins NOT bobby pins) 3. Hairspray 4. Gel 5. Comb / brush How to create the perfect bun: 1. Pull hair into a tight ponytail in the middle of the head (in line with, or just above the top of the ears). Use gel and hairspray to do so. 2. Holding the ponytail just below the elastic, twist it clockwise, moving your hands down the ponytail and twisting as you go. 3. Without letting go of the twisted ponytail, coil it clockwise around the hair elastic, so that it sits in a flat bun. 4. Holding the bun firmly to the head with one hand, insert a couple of hair pins (not bobby pins!) to hold the bun in place. 5. Place a hair net over the bun and pin the net to the bun. 6. Secure the bun in place by using the remaining hair pins you can make adjustments to the shape of the bun if need be. 7. Spray with hairspray. The Performance Nights Arrival times are to be strictly adhered to 6.30pm Friday Night and 6.00pm Saturday night. Please arrive at the theatre with hair and make-up completed at home. NO costumes are to be worn to/from the theatre. All students are required to bring all costumes in a costume/suit bag these can be purchased from places such as the Reject Shop, Kmart, Target etc. Bring snacks (non greasy/non sticky) and water bottle Bring quiet activities (e.g. colouring books) On the Saturday night, all students are required to stay on the stage after the performance for the presentation of Awards. No student is to leave the backstage area during the evening to meet guests in the foyer or to sit in the Auditorium. Kinder and Prep students NOT in the finale will be permitted to leave during the first intermission. Page 9

Parent helpers For the concert nights and dress rehearsal to run smoothly, CSOD relies on the help of parents/guardians. If you would like to help out on one of the nights, then please place your name on the helper board that will be available at each of the Sunday rehearsals. Helpers required include: Dressing room helpers Ushers Backstage Ticket Box Sign in/sign out helpers Only parents whose names appear on the helper board will be permitted backstage. Awards / Scholarships At the end of the Saturday night performance, awards are presented on stage to students. Awards are presented to students who continuously demonstrate attributes such as commitment, excellence, effort, a positive attitude and dedication. This year, the teachers and committee of management have made the decision to award 1 major award for each age category (junior, intermediate and senior) in each dance style, as well as 1 encouragement award for every 5 students in that age category. For example, if there are 10 junior ballet students, then 2 encouragement awards and 1 major award will be presented. Please note that the awarding of trophies is at the full discretion of the teachers alone, with no input received from the committee of management A scholarship in each style (Jazz, Tap, Ballet, Hip Hop and Contemporary) will also be awarded to a student 12 years or older who has excelled in a particular style. If you would like to sponsor a scholarship, can you please contact Adana Marchione. What to do in the week before the concert 1. Make sure your dance shoes are CLEAN. 2.
