INTRODUCTION The National Sonata Class rules are closed class rules (previously known as one-design class rules) where anything not specifically permitted by the class rules is prohibited. The rules are intended to ensure that boats in the National Sonata Class are as nearly alike as possible with regard to the shape and weight of the hull, the deck, keel, rudder, spars and sails, and in all respects affecting basic performance. National Sonata hulls, hull appendages, rigs and sails are measurement controlled. National Sonata hulls shall only be manufactured by manufacturers licensed by the RYA. Equipment is required to comply with the any RYA Building Specification. National Sonata hulls, hull appendages, rigs and sails may, after having left the manufacturer, only be altered to the extent permitted in these class rules. Owners and crews should be aware that compliance with rules in Section C is NOT checked as part of the certification process. Rules regulating the use of equipment during a race are contained in Section C of these class rules, in ERS Part I and in the Racing Rules of Sailing. This introduction only provides an informal background and the National Sonata Class Rules proper begin on the next page. The Sonata class permits IHC (In House Certification) as approved by the RYA for sails in Section G only. PLEASE REMEMBER: IF THESE RULES DO NOT SAY THAT YOU CAN THEN YOU CAN NOT. PART I ADMINISTRATION Section A General A.1 LANGUAGE A.1.1 The official language of the class is English and in case of dispute over translation the English text shall prevail. A.1.2 The word shall is mandatory and the word may is permissive. A.2 ABBREVIATIONS A.2.1 ISAF International Sailing Federation RYA Royal Yachting Association NSA National Sonata Association ERS Equipment Rules of Sailing RRS Racing Rules of Sailing A.3 AUTHORITIES A.3.1 The authority of the class is the RYA which shall co-operate with the NSA in all matters concerning these class rules. A.3.2 Notwithstanding anything contained herein, the certification authority has the authority to withdraw a certificate. A.3.3 The ISAF, the RYA, the NSA and official measurers are under no legal responsibility in respect of these rules, plans or accuracy of measurement and no claim arising from these class rules can be entertained. A.4 ADMINISTRATION OF THE CLASS A.4.1 The class shall be administered by the RYA in conjunction with the NSA. A.5 ISAF RULES A.5.1 These class rules shall be read in conjunction with the ERS. A.5.2 Except where used in headings, when a term is printed in bold the definition in the ERS applies and when a term is printed in italics the definition in the RRS applies. A.6 CLASS RULES VARIATIONS A.6.1 At Class Events see RRS 87. At all other events RRS 86. A.7 CLASS RULES AMENDMENTS A.7.1 Amendments to these class rules are subject to the approval of the RYA. A.8 CLASS RULES INTERPRETATION A.8.1 Interpretation of class rules shall be made by the RYA, who may consult the NSA. 4 National Sonata Class Rules 2012

A.9 CLASS BUILDING FEE A.9.1 The licensed hull builder shall pay the Building Fee to the RYA on commencement of building. A.9.2 The RYA shall, after having received the Building Fee for the hull, shall send a receipt and sail number to the licensed hull builder. A.10 SAIL NUMBERS A.10.1 Sail numbers shall be issued by the RYA. A.11 HULL CERTIFICATION A.11.1 A certificate shall record the following information: (a) Class (b) Certification authority - RYA (c) Sail number issued by the certification authority (d) Owner (e) Hull identification if applicable (f) Builder details (g) Date of issue of initial certificate (h) Date of issue of certificate A.12 INITIAL HULL CERTIFICATION A.12.1 For a certificate to be issued to hull not previously certified: (a) Certification control shall be carried out by the official measurer who shall complete the appropriate documentation. (b) The documentation and certification fee, if required, shall be sent to the certification authority. (c) Upon receipt of a satisfactorily completed documentation and certification fee, if required, the certification authority may issue a certificate. A.13 VALIDITY OF CERTIFICATE A.13.1 A hull certificate becomes invalid upon: (a) the change to any items recorded on the hull certificate as required under A.11. (b) withdrawal by the certification authority, (c) the issue of a new certificate, A.14 HULL RE-CERTIFICATION A.14.1 The certification authority may issue a certificate to a previously certified hull: (a) when it is invalidated under A.13.1 (a), after receipt of the old certificate when available, and certification fee if required. (b) when it is invalidated under A.13.1 (b), at its discretion. (c) in other cases, by application of the procedure in A.12. National Sonata Class Rules 2012 5

A.15 RETENTION OF CERTIFICATION DOCUMENTATION A.15.1 The certification authority shall: (a) retain the original documentation upon which the current certificate is based. (b) upon request, transfer this documentation to the new certification authority if the hull is exported. Section B Boat Eligibility For a boat to be eligible for racing, it shall comply with the rules in this section. B.1 CLASS RULES AND CERTIFICATION B.1.1 The boat shall: (a) be in compliance with the class rules. (b) have a valid hull certificate. (c) have valid certification marks as required B.2 FLOTATION CHECKS B.2.1 A race committee may require that a boat shall pass the flotation test. B.2.2 FLOTATION (a) The boat in the trim defined below, shall float in still water so that the surface of the water passes between the upper and lower edges of the marks detailed in C.6.3(2) and C.7.4(a). (b) The boat shall be fully rigged and ready to sail with sheets and guys stowed abaft the mast. (c) The mainsail shall be in place and furled. The main boom shall be in the normal racing position along the centreline. The spinnaker pole shall be attached to a main shroud and laid forward along the deck. (d) Sails, except the mainsail, shall be stowed below decks on the cabin sole and not forward of the mast. In the event that it is necessary to stack sails, they shall be distributed aft of the mast, over the cabin sole and with the heavier sails on the cabin sole and the light sails on top, but no higher than necessary. Sails below deck shall not exceed those allowed in C.9.2(a). (e) All other equipment than above, shall be in its normal place, except that movable gear normally stored forward of the mast shall be placed aft of the mast. (f) All water tanks shall be empty and there shall be no portable water containers on board. (g) Anchors and chains shall be stowed beneath the cockpit. (h) The bilges shall be pumped dry and there shall be no clothing, food, stores or persons on board. (i) The outboard shall be in its stowage beneath the cockpit. Any motor fuel tanks whether integral with the motor or not shall be full and located either on or adjacent to the motor power head 6 National Sonata Class Rules 2012

(j) The boat s bow shall not be depressed through lying at a mooring. B.3 CLASS ASSOCIATION B.3.1 The owner shall be a current member of the NSA. National Sonata Class Rules 2012 7

PART II REQUIREMENTS AND LIMITATIONS The crew and the boat shall comply with the rules in Part II when racing. In case of conflict Section C shall prevail. The rules in Part II are closed class rules. Certification control and equipment inspection shall be carried out in accordance with the ERS except where varied in this Part. Section C Conditions for Racing C.1 GENERAL C.1.1 RULES (a) The ERS Part I Use of Equipment shall apply. C.2 CREW C.2.1 LIMITATIONS (a) The crew shall consist of a minimum of 3 and a maximum of 5 persons. (b) No crew member shall be substituted during a single event of less than 7 consecutive days, unless with prior written approval or the race committee. (c) The crew shall not sail with heads or torsos under the upper lifeline. This amends RRS 49.2. C.3 PERSONAL EQUIPMENT C.3.1 (a) MANDATORY The boat shall be equipped with personal buoyancy for each crew member to the minimum standard ISO 12402-5. (b) OPTIONAL Other personal equipment shall comply with ERS C.5.3 C.4 ADVERTISING C.4.1 LIMITATIONS Advertising shall only be displayed in accordance the ISAF Advertising Code. (See ISAF Regulation 20) C.5 PORTABLE EQUIPMENT C.5.1 FOR USE (a) MANDATORY (1) Fire extinguisher; readily accessible and suitable for marine use. (2) Bucket minimum capacity 9lts with a minimum 1.5 m lanyard securely attached. 8 National Sonata Class Rules 2012

(3) One anchor of not less than 6 kg in weight together with a minimum 2m of 4.5mm chain and with not less than 20m of line of not less than 10mm in diameter (4) Hand pump. (5) Marine steering compass with a minimum of 60mm card correctly installed and adjusted or electronic compass, correctly installed and adjusted, capable only of instantaneous read out. (6) Two saloon berth mattresses made from foam rubber or similar and upholstered in fabric or vinyl. Each mattress shall be not less than 1830mm x 600mm x 100mm. The mattresses shall be positioned on the saloon berths, one to port and one to starboard or two permanently installed corrector weights each of 5kg in weight mounted beneath the saloon berth in the aftermost locker. (7) Chemical or marine toilet. (8) A cooker in the galley area. (9) A minimum of one marine band VHF radio. (b) OPTIONAL (1) Electronic or mechanical devices to measure and calculate speed, distance, water depth, apparent and true wind angle and speed, water temperature and position. Any device may be linked to another. (2) Additional safety devices and equipment to person in charge s requirements or to comply with local regulations. (3) Additional equipment or fittings that contribute to the practical and seamanlike operation of the craft without enhancing performance or contravening other Class Rules. C.5.2 C.5.3 C.5.4 NOT FOR USE (a) MANDATORY (1) Engine of minimum weight: 13kg. Outboard engines must be stowed securely beneath the cockpit at all times except when intended for or just subsequent to use. The Notice of Race and/or Sailing Instructions may prescribe safety equipment in addition to the minimum standards contained in the Class Rules. Anchors, outboard motor, batteries, fuel containers and other heavy items shall be secured against movement. National Sonata Class Rules 2012 9

C.6 HULL C.6.1 C.6.2 C.6.3 MODIFICATIONS, MAINTENANCE AND REPAIR (a) A spinnaker chute from the bow well may be fitted. It shall be capable of being sealed off in a watertight manner. The spinnaker halyard and sheets may pass through the chute when open. (b) Routine maintenance such as painting and polishing is permitted without re-measurement and re-certification. FITTINGS (a) USE (1) A minimum of 2 lifelines shall be fitted, one to port and one to starboard. (2) The lifelines shall be securely connected to bow and stern pulpits and pass through or be attached to two stanchions each side. (3) There shall be a (third) lifeline between the stern pulpits across the transom of the boat. (4) The lifelines (or upper lifelines if more are fitted) shall be of stainless or galvanised steel multi strand wire, minimum diameter 4mm. They shall be tensioned such that they shall be a minimum of 460mm above the sheerline. (5) The lifelines may be sheathed in any material. DIMENSIONS (1) The external skin of the stem shall be permanently marked, either by moulding, carving or the insertion of a screw at 1015mm, measured along the line of the stem from the FDP to the centre of what ever method of marking is used. (2) A distinctive coloured band shall be painted horizontally on both sides of the hull with the lower edge intersecting the mark in (1). minimum maximum Length of hull band... 100 mm... Width of hull band... 30 mm... 30 mm C.7 HULL APPENDAGES C.7.1 C.7.2 C.7.3 MODIFICATIONS, MAINTENANCE AND REPAIR (a) Routine maintenance such as repainting or the repair of minor damage is permitted without re-measurement and re-certification FITTINGS (a) USE (1) The tiller extension is optional. LIMITATIONS (a) Only one rudder shall be used during an event of less than 7 consecutive days, except when a rudder has been lost or damaged beyond repair. 10 National Sonata Class Rules 2012

(2) The rudder band shall be a distinctive coloured band painted horizontally around the rudder. (3) The rudder shall be attached to the transom on the hull centreplane by means of pintles and/or gudgeons. (4) The rudder datum mark shall be on the same horizontal plane as the HDP (D.2.4). C.8 RIG C.8.1 C.8.2 C.8.3 C.8.4 MODIFICATIONS, MAINTENANCE AND REPAIR (a) Routine maintenance such as cleaning, polishing and lubricating of fittings is permitted without re-certification. LIMITATIONS (a) Only one set of spars and standing rigging shall be used during an event of less than 7 consecutive days, except when an item has been lost or damaged beyond repair. C.8.5 C.8.6 C.8.7 (b) USE (1) The intersection of the aft edge of the mast spar and the top of the boom spar, each extended as necessary, shall not be below the upper edge of the mast lower limit mark when the boom spar is at 90 to the mast spar. SPINNAKER POLE (a) USE (1) The spinnaker pole shall be attached to the mast fitting when in use. (4) The backstay adjuster shall be attached to the backstay adjuster fittings D.4..1(a)(3). (5) The forestay shall be attached to the forestay fitting. (6) A single or twin luff groove headsail foil may be fitted of optional manufacturer. RUNNING RIGGING (a) USE (1) Only 1 headsail and 1 spinnaker halyard shall be used. (2) Mast checkstays, if fitted, shall be taken to a cleat, or through a single turning block and then to a cleat, which shall be fitted on the deck a maximum of 500mm forward of HDP (D.2.4). The checkstays shall not be tensioned and shall not take load when the boat is working to windward. (3) Maximum 1 pair of Barber haulers to run on headsail sheets, solely to modify the sheeting angle. (4) Maximum or 1 pair of reaching hooks, snatch blocks or floating blocks to solely enable control of the spinnaker sheets and/or guys. (5) Subject to any restrictions in these rules, running rigging is optional in design and materials. C.9 SAILS C.9.1 MODIFICATIONS, MAINTENANCE AND REPAIR (a) Sails shall not be altered in any way except as permitted by these class rules. 12 National Sonata Class Rules 2012

C.9.2 C.9.3 C.9.4 (b) Routine maintenance such as cleaning and minor repairs is permitted without re-measurement and re-certification. LIMITATIONS (a) Not more than 1 mainsail, 1 storm jib, 1 working jib, 1 genoa No 1, 1 genoa No 2 and 2 spinnakers shall be carried aboard. (b) The second spinnaker shall only be used if the first is lost or damaged and cannot be repaired afloat. MAINSAIL (a) USE (1) A halyard shall be used to hoist the sail. The arrangement shall permit hoisting and lowering of the sail at sea.
