CELEBRATING 16YEARS OF SINGLES GOLF IN AMERICA North Jersey Chapter - American Singles Golf Association August 2009 President s Message Dear Members, Our golf outing hosts have been doing an outstanding job. They have arranged for play on beautiful courses, we have enjoyed excellent restaurants and many good times have been etched in memory. However, some things are left best unsaid and possibly only left to memory or the imagination. This sums up the experiences of our group at the recent Chapter Water Gap weekend. Our motto upon return: what happened in Pennsylvania stays in PA! To say the Gap weekend was eventful is an understatement we all had a blast, no harm no foul and everyone arrived home safe and sound. That said, for half of our group the weekend that began on Friday took off on a slippery slope no pun intended we all witnessed first hand that drinking and driving (a golf cart that is) don t mix unless your preferred mode of transport is an ambulance, donuts on the tee box are the quickest way to earn a ride in the back seat of a State Police car and a damsel in distress was observed sending SOS signals from the roof top! Our very own Joe Cifune dashed to the rescue and saved the day. I can t make this stuff up, I only report it. Rumor has it there already is a waiting list for Water Gap 2010! As we enjoy the last month of summer and look forward to golf amid the picturesque fall foliage, please do a little soul searching and envision how you might give back to your chapter. You guessed it; the nominating committee will soon be knocking on your door seeking volunteers to serve on the Chapter Board for the 2010 year. From experience I can tell you it doesn t pay much (nothing) but you get to work with a great group of folks and you will find it a very rewarding experience. Please consider stepping up to the tee! Let s all do our part to reach out and spread the NJ-ASGA word to fellow single golfers and encourage prospective members to attend our meetings, mingles, and outings. Continue to enjoy 2009, a year promised to deliver fun, friendship, and great golf. ~Linda Madernini, President Social Dear Members, We had an excellent turnout at our July Single Mingle held at Legal Seafood, most staying for a fabulous seafood dinner. We had a great turnout at our last dinner meeting held at Maggiano's. The food and service were outstanding, and we thank you all for your after-dinner comments. They are greatly appreciated. See you all there, and don't forget to bring a friend! ~Ruth Elk/Grace Zucaro Social Co-Chairs Social Events Wow, I just re-read my article from the April newsletter, talking about the weather warming up now, we need it to DRY UP! A bunch of us, happy to see the sun on June 14, traveled down to West Amwell, NJ where we played, and laughed our way through the delightful and challenging Pine Creek Miniature Golf Course. After that, we dined al fresco in nearby Lambertville, which is a charming town right on the border of New Hope, Pennsylvania. We hope to entice more members to join us again there in the fall. After getting rained out on July 2 at the Brookdale Park concert, we are still eagerly planning some more free outdoor concerts during this summer. On Tuesday, August 4, the Mahoney Brothers, a Beatles tribute band, will be appearing at the Paramus Public Library. It s a lovely venue, a large field and bandshell right behind the library. August 14 brings the Infernos, a doo-wop group, to Brookdale Park in Montclair/Bloomfield. We will send reminders out, but if you are interested in joining us, let us know soon so we can begin planning for a meeting place. In September, the Bacon Brothers will be appearing at Bergen PAC in Engle- wood. We are checking out ticket prices and will advise soon so we can get a head count and order them. We continue to seek and plan for new social activities, including a possible boat ride, so keep checking your e-mail for announcements, and if you do not have e-mail, please feel free to call us. If anyone in our chapter has an idea for a social event, we are always open to suggestion. Just send an e-mail or call. ~Sandy Fink, Flo Weiner Social Events Co- Chairs Golf The first weekday outing of the year was on Monday, June 29th at Pinchbrook GC. Eight players played at near ideal conditions. Frank Hopler ran away with a score of 76 for the men. Women's prizes were very competitive with Kari Hopler winning low gross by two shots and Anna Ramsey low net by one. After golf, everyone went to dinner at Molly Malone's where the Boston Scrod was the big hit of the day. Our first weekday "9 & Dine" was held July 7th at Somerset Valley in Pompton Plains. The format was Bingo, Bango, Bongo (a point each for: 1st on the green, closest to the hole, and whoever holes their ball first). The winners were Frank Hopler and Leslie Rothfeld. After golf, seven players landed safely at the Sunset Pub & Grill in Lincoln Park for dinner and prime rib. The next weekday outing will be on Thursday August 13th at Berkshire Valley. The format will be a tribute to the President's Solheim Cup, an 18 hole alternate shot format. The outing at Winding Hills on July 12 th was Geri Powder s first outing as organizer - weather was of great concern for her as the prediction was for rain the night before and it did rain. However, Do you want to update your personal information on our chapter s roster? You can now do this yourself. Simply click on the MY ACCOUNT link at the national website (SinglesGolf.com). You can update your address, phone, add your cell phone, change handicap, etc. Doing it yourself takes the burden off of your chapter leaders so they can spend more time on the golf course and less time on the computer!

upon waking on Sunday the sun was shining and we had a delightfully cool and dry day with little or no humidity. The course was as beautiful and difficult as remembered. Donna Beland won longest drive and Leon Saddler won closest to the pin. After relaxing on the lawn enjoying the sun and a libation, we moved on to the Wards Bridge Inn a group favorite for a thoroughly delightful dinner. On Wednesday July 15th Gus Eggerling put together an outing at Skyview GC. Unfortunately, (or fortunately) Skyview had overbooked and made arrangements for our group of nine to play at the Newton CC. We were able to tee off immediately and enjoyed spectacular weather and a wonderful afternoon of golf --- some players enjoyed it more than others since it was a rather challenging course. Afterward, we were referred to the Casa Bellisima where we enjoyed refreshing drinks and good food. We have a new outing on the schedule Emerson Golf Course. Marc Levinson is running this outing and it is scheduled for August 15 th. Look for more detail in the golf outing table. ~Dave Gray/Chuck Kreysig, Golf Co-Chairs Membership Dear Members, I hope everyone is enjoying a great summer despite some of the rain we are having. CELEBRATING 16 YEARS OF SINGLESGOLF IN AMERICA AMERICAN SINGLES GOLF ASSOCIATION AUGUST 2009 The national office of the American Singles Golf Association (ASGA) has announced another great opportunity for singles to meet, greet, then battle it out on great golf courses. Venue: Myrtle Beach, USA. With somewhere between 80 and 100 golf courses in the area (depending on who you speak with), Myrtle Beach is simply the natural place to be when it comes to playing golf in the Fall. The weather is cool but not cold and the sandy soil is ideal for grass-growing conditions. All-in-all, mix the beautiful weather with the great golf and many friends from across the country, and you ve got the making for a great golf weekend. This year, the national office has signed an agreement with the Marriott Grande Dunes, located right on the beach in Myrtle Beach. It s a AAA Four-Diamond hotel and is ranked as one of the Top 500 resorts in the world by Travel+Leisure magazine. We ve lined-up s o m e g r e a t courses nearby and have arranged for 10am shotgun starts each morning, so you ll have plenty of time to complete your round before the sun goes down. Date: November 12-15. Cost: Only $399 if you have a roommate, play two rounds of golf (including cart with GPS & range balls), enjoy six food functions, one of which is the Saturday night dinner... filet mignon and salmon and Friday night s themed Cheeseburgers in Paradise, where the best dressed parrothead will get $100. So to get all the details on this fun-filled event, visit the website at SinglesGolf.com/BattleAtTheBeach or complete the registration form enclosed with your monthly newsletter. If you d like to register over the phone, call us at 704-889-4600. Scotland a Definite Since we did our survey last month, we ve spent a lot of time researching the kinds of things that will make our visit to Scotland a memorable one. We were all a little surprised to see the players at the Open Championship wearing long sleeves. This wasn t a fashion statement. It can get a little bit nippy in Scotland, even in the Summer. So if you play Scotland you ve got to understand Scotland. Expect the unexpected and the trip will be even more enjoyable! Please stay-tuned. We don t want to announce anything until it s on paper. For updates, continue to visit the Scotland website, SinglesGolf.com/Scotland New Year s Location To Be Announced Later this month, we ll announce the location for our New Year s event. We will post 2-3 options on a website and will send out a national survey for your input. Chicago Celebrates Tenth Anniversary Congratulations to our fine folks up in ChicagoLand for celebrating their tenth year as a chapter of the American Singles Golf Association! The leadership has done a great job over the years keeping the troops happy and we thank them for that. New Chapters / West Coast + East Coast It s been a busy spring and summer with the implementation of a new start-up section on the website. Persons interested in setting-up new ASGA chapters can find the process simplified by going to SinglesGolf.com/start. We d like to thank Connie Vickroy who has started the Bay Area (San Francisco) Chapter of ASGA and Hallie Currigan, for starting the Savannah Chapter. If you have friends, colleagues, relatives, etc. in a distant city and think they d be an ideal candidate for getting a new ASGA chapter started, please have them contact us. - - Tom Alsop, President / Founder, ASGA Phone 704-889-4600 or 1-888-GOLFMATE GolfASGA@aol.com
