Scheduling and registration for 2018 2019 This takes a lot of hours to put together and can only be finalized when we have the majority of the registrations in place. We then adjust the schedule with teachers, students and coordinating classes for back to back classes when possible. Getting the registrations in will help speed up this process. Don t forget the first week of classes we allow children to try lots of classes in different styles to find the best fit for them. For the competition and company dancers: This upcoming year we will be offering technique classes in hip hop, jazz, acro, and tap to go with your choreography classes. Students in competition and company dance classes are encouraged to take as many ballet and technique classes as they can to improve their dance skills. Choreography classes are not always able to give time to the technique needed so this will help. We will also be keeping a Dancer's Professionalism Graded report to monitor the children s attendance, preparedness, and attitude in class. Please read the policies and procedures for the upcoming year. For some classes attendance was so poor that never once in the entire year did we have a whole class. This cannot happen and your child will be asked to move to a recreational level class if it continues. For the recreational students, your classes will remain one hour one time a week. Please register on line at www.candancestudio.com PROCEDURE AND POLICY: CAN DANCE STUDIO 2018-2019 On behalf of the Faculty and Staff of Can Dance Studio, I would like to welcome you! We are very proud of our studio and its students. We are excited for our 2018/19 dance year as we grow each year in the community. 29 years in Mission. Thank you! Our goal is to provide you with an exciting and professional dance education, in a warm, family friendly environment. Our staff believes in Can Dance and the education we provide. We believe in the whole student; physically, mentally, and a healthy spirit. We hope to make you a believer, too! Thank you for trusting us to further your dance education. We believe our program will satisfy all of your dance needs. Can Dance Studio has a class for you! Can Dance Studio is continuously evolving. Everything we do is for the benefit of our students and we are thrilled to continue to make more times and classes available to those interested in a quality dance education. PLEASE REVIEW OUR PROCEDURES FOR THE 2018-2019 YEAR

Classes begin Tuesday, September 10th, 2018 PLEASE READ THOROUGHLY AS SOME OF OUR PROCEDURES HAVE CHANGED! HOW OUR PROGRAM WORKS: Can Dance Studio is very proud of our diverse program. We offer many styles of dance including: Ballet, Pointe, Tap, Jazz, Hip Hop, Modern/Contemporary, Musical Theatre, Lyrical, and Acrobatics classes. Our program is offered to anyone ages 2.5 years through to adult, with beginner through advanced levels available. The foundation of our program is based on ballet training and all of our teachers are experienced and qualified in the styles they teach. CLASS PLACEMENT: Students are placed in classes FIRST by their age and SECOND by their skill level, technique, flexibility and performance. Students are NOT placed in class based on the number of years they have been dancing. We believe that each student is unique and has different needs, strengths and weaknesses. We spend a lot of time deciding where each student will feel comfortable, have fun and still find themselves challenged in dance class. We will never hold a student back if we feel they are ready for more of a challenge. This is very important to us. No student will be moved into a competition or company level without taking technique classes. Preferably ballet as well as a technique class in their styles, this is crucial to their development and is necessary to maintain strong technique. Tap students will need a tap technique class, Acro students will need to take an acrobatic technique class and Hip-hop students a hip hop technique class. Jazz a jazz technique class, as well as a ballet class. Anyone interested in taking pointe must be approved to be placed in that class. This is strictly a safety issue. Although injury is common when you are physically active and athletic, we try to minimize that possibility for our students. Dancers are NOT moved into pointe based on number of years they have taken ballet; placement is based strictly on strength. Recreational students do not have to take ballet or technique classes. CLASSROON ATTIRE: Can Dance Studio has a basic dress code of a black bodysuit (tight tank for boys) and tight black shorts with their hair tied back, bun preferred. Leather ballet tights are also required for ballet with the bodysuit, no shorts. (Ballet: a bun is a must). Ballet slippers for all ballet classes Preschool ballet dancers may wear a pink bodysuit, pink tights, pink leather slippers and a little skirt is fine if they wish. Hip-hop dancers need to come in comfortable clothes with indoor clean runners. Acro is bare feet. Black bodysuit or sports bra, black shorts, legging or capris, Tap needs oxford tap shoes. Black bodysuit or tank top with black shorts. Jazz shoes for all recreational jazz classes. For competition level and company dance classes please check with the instructor before buying. Foot undies or bare feet for lyrical, modern, contemporary, and competition level jazz with the black tank or bodysuit and shorts. Ask your teacher the first class if you are unsure what you need. TUITION: PLEASE READ CAREFULLY TUITION POLICIES HAVE CHANGED! Seasonal Tuition (September-June) is based strictly on a minimum 24-week dance year. Not on a 4 class per month basis. Please inquire to these costs upon registration. Private classes are $120 a month for a half hour a week. LATE FEE: There will be a $25 late fee for any unpaid tuition. LEVELS and PLACEMENT:

CAN DANCE STUDIO dance program is sequential. Dancers begin their dance training at a recreational dance level. At the end of each year students must meet or exceed the established skill and effort benchmarks in Tap, Ballet, Acro, Hip hop, Contemporary, Modern, Lyrical, Musical Theatre, and Jazz for that level before progressing on to the next level. Kids recommended for competition level classes will be required to take technique classes to enhance their training. Company dancers take all styles of dance to help them become well rounded dancers. They are committed to training 4-5 days a week. Every dancer is different and while many dancers will progress from recreational, to competition, to company on occasion a child may need to repeat or even skip a dance level. We ask that students and parents trust the combined expertise of our highly skilled staff of trained dance professionals to determine the most appropriate placement for their child. Students that show outstanding skill and effort may be asked to join the Competition and Company Level. These students are ambassadors for the dance department and for Can Dance, having met the highest skill and effort benchmarks for dance in all styles of dance. At any time, they can lose this position due to lack of attention, attitude, or unmotivated behavior. GRADING: Our goal is to give students and parents an accurate picture of how the student is mastering the objectives and principals of dance class. DAILY PROFESSIONALISM GRADE: Dancers receive a daily professionalism grade. At the end of the week, daily scores are averaged to determine the dancer s weekly professionalism grade. Dancers must maintain a professionalism grade in order to remain in his or her current level of dance. Dancers must also maintain a in order to be considered for promotion into the next level. Dancer's Professionalism Grades are based on the FOLLOWING: Being on time. Dancers must be in their assigned spots ready to dance when class begins. Dancers that are late will stand at the door and wait for a teacher to invite him or her in. Being in the DRESS CODE daily. Having the correct DANCE SHOES. Hair UP!! Hair longer than ear level needs to be secured back with a hair tie in a ponytail or bun. (Ballet bun is a must) If a dancer s hair is too short for a ponytail, but longer than the ears, it needs to be secured back from the face with clips or an elastic hairband. Participating fully in every class. Being present and in class. Dancers that are not in class will need to fill out an ABSENCE MAKE-UP FORM in order for their absence not to affect their grade. This includes excused absences. Dancer's missing more than a week of dance at a time will need to see teachers for an alternative evaluation. It is the dancer s responsibility to learn all material taught in class that day from a classmate or peer. Being safe, fair and friendly. Dancers are expected to represent Can Dance by being positive role models for others. Being mentally ready to dance leaving all stresses and problems at the door when they enter. Illness/Injury Policy: Students that are ill or injured and unable to participate, MUST bring a note from a doctor or nurse explaining the dancer's circumstances. (A parent note will be temporarily accepted until a formal note can be obtained.) No note will result in an absent mark for the day. After three absences, private classes

during school hours may be necessary to make up for missed times. This will be at the cost of the parent. SKILL GRADES TECHNICAL SKILL, KNOWLEDGE, COMPREHENSION AND BODY AWAIRENESS. Dancers will be assessed on their dance knowledge, skill and comprehension as they progress towards mastery. Dancers that fall below proficiency on their skill grade will need to be reassessed to see if the competition or company levels are right for them. At the end of the year student's technical skill will be assessed to determine his or her level placement for the next year during our evaluation week. Dancers will need to maintain and increase his or her overall skill score each year to be considered for promotion to the next level. FAMILY VACATION: If your family is planning a vacation when dance is in session please be considerate of the following. February thru mid-may are crucial preparation periods for all dance classes as well as competition season. Each dancer plays a significant role in the dance performances and ONCE AGAIN ALL CLASSES AND REHEARSALS ARE MANDATORY! Frequent absences during these times may result in a modified dance part or removal from the dance performances. Thank you for your consideration. COMMUNICATION: It is your responsibility to stay informed. A monthly newsletter with times, dates, fees and important information will be emailed each month. If you do not get it you can find a copy on the candancestudio.com website, the can dance studio private Facebook page can dance studio 2018 2019 as well as posted upstairs and downstairs at the studio. Please read before emailing with questions. OBSERVING LESSONS: We know how anxious parents are to see the progress of their children, however, sometimes students are inhibited and self-conscious while trying to learn with adults in the room. Therefore, we only allow teacher's permission to observe classes with written approval or during observation week. These are the ONLY times we will permit anyone to observe. Please do not ask for special privileges, if we make an exception for one person, we have to make an exception for everyone. We hope you will respect this policy, as we truly feel it will be the best way for your child to get the most out of their dance education. PARKING: I understand that parking can be at a premium at the studio. Please allow plenty of time to maybe walk a block or so when dropping off or picking up your children. For safety reasons, we do not let your children wait on the street or allow double parking as the children run in and out of the studio. Railway Ave has lots of parking and you are free to use that entrance even if your classes are upstairs. You are free to use either studio waiting area for the drop off and pick up. Do not feel that if your class is upstairs you can only drop off upstairs. RESPECT AND CONFLICT: We require all students and parents to be respectful and loyal to all students at Can Dance Studio. To the boys in Ballet, to the kids with special needs, to the dancers who have arrived from another studio, to your best friends in class. Everyone will be treated respectfully and positively while here at Can Dance studio. I will not tolerate any negative talk between students at competition, in class, at any Can Dance sanctioned events, or at any time. We are a family, a team, and a group of kids who want to learn to dance. Help me continue this talk about respecting oneself and well as others. Any negative talk, photos or inappropriate behavior will be asked to be removed. If the parent or student s behavior is deemed inappropriate and continues we will ask that you disconnect yourself from our Can Dance

Studio and may be asked to leave. We want to have a healthy supportive environment for all our students. If this doesn t work for you then Can Dance is not the place. WE ARE HERE TO DEVELOP CHILDREN INTO HAPPY HEALTHY ADULTS. It takes a village to raise a child and we want to continue to support everyone in our village. TEACHERS AND STUDENT ASSISTANTS: All of our teachers and student assistants are qualified and committed to the job at hand. We have a genuine passion for dance and for working with your children. Please feel free to ask questions about your child s progress and keep us informed of new and exciting things in your child s life. We love to know your child as more than just a dancer! If for any reason you have an issue with one of our staff members, please discuss it with the director, Debbie Calicetto first. Our staff follows the guidelines she sets out and are usually teaching more than one class per night. In order to keep our studio running efficiently, please do not stop our staff between classes to discuss a major concern. Please leave a message or email to discuss any concern you have and it will be handled it as quickly as possible. In the rare instance that a teacher would need a substitute at the last minute, our student teachers are expected and encouraged to step in. Our student assistants are teachers in training and we are happy to make this opportunity available to them or a qualified sub will be there in their place. DRESS REHEARSAL: Our year end shows, competitions and dress rehearsals are MANDATORY for every single student who would like to participate. There are no exceptions for this rule Please mark your calendars. We usually have in class dress rehearsals as well as an on-stage rehearsal for the competition and company dancers and one on stage rehearsal in June for the recreational students. RECITAL: All students must have their assigned costumes, accessories, correct shoes, and hair styles in order to perform. We ask anyone who wears glasses to kindly remove them for our performances for safety reasons. If a child absolutely cannot go without glasses for their time on stage, we will require a sports strap to hold the glasses on. COSTUMES: All students performing in our recital will have one costume per class. Technique classes do not perform if they do no costume fee will be needed. All other classes will need one costume per class. Prices will be posted by the 3rd week in October. Out of respect for your budget, please plan on anywhere between $60.00-$85.00 per costume (very low cost/very high-end costume). ALL COSTUME MONEY IS DUE IN FULL by November 1st. Any costume paid after the November 1 st deadline is subject to late fee s. Please remember, if you are in ten dances that is 10 costumes. Please budget accordingly. EXTRA PERFORMANCES: Throughout the year, Can Dance Studio is often invited to perform at events such as a benefit or gala, community events, festival etc. Our staff pulls students to perform based on what the event is asking of us. Each one is different and we give as many opportunities as we can to as many students as possible based on the event. Note that there will be no extra participation fees or costumes required for these events.

CAN DANCE PHILOSPOHY: For the past 29 seasons has always remained the same. We are here to let everybody have the chance to learn to dance. We are not all going to be professional dancers. And here at Can Dance we understand that. We are not all able to afford unlimited classes. We get that too. We want you the parent to understand that we are here to find what level of commitment, feasibility, desire and passion each dancer has. It is totally ok if you want to dance just one day a week. It is wonderful if you can have your child in 20 hours a week. Every family situation is different and we want to find the right fit for you. Also, we do not support inappropriate dance moves, music, chatter, talk, social media or costumes for our dancers. We believe in dance modesty, as I call it, for the appropriate age. I watch that all my staff is aware of age appropriate music, costumes and moves that support the wellbeing of the child. If you are looking for a studio that pushes kids beyond a healthy range in areas such as flexibility, dance moves like they see on TV or a win at all cost attitude then Can Dance will not be right for you. If you are looking for a family oriented dance studio that supplies age appropriate dance classes and develops the full well-rounded child rather than just a dancer. They we will be here for you and provide you everything we can to full fill your dancer s needs. CONTRACT: This is a contract. Buy attending class you agree to the terms listed above for the CURRENT SEASON. class. If dancers miss excessive classes, rehearsals and/or performances, don t participate fully in class, or uphold the requirements specified above, dancers will be asked not to participate in the PRODUCTIONS OR PERFORMANCES. No refunds will be given for absences or discontinued classes if this contract is broken. Please do not hesitate to call me at the studio if you would like to speak with me.
