CHICAGO CUBS (75-62) vs. PITTSBURGH PIRATES (66-72) SEPTEMBER 5, 2017 at PNC PARK -- Pittsburgh, PA --- GAME #139/HOME #71 RHP KYLE HENDRICKS (6-4, 3.32 ERA) vs. LHP STEVEN BRAULT (0-0, 5.93 ERA) THE PIRATES...have won three straight games after dropping four in a row...won a season-high six consecutive games from 7/16-21 and posted a 12-2 record between 7/4-21 (have gone 17-24 since then)...scored a season-high 14 runs on 7/9 at Chicago (NL)...Had a 69-69 record after 138 games last season (69-70 after 139). SHOOTING BLANKS: The Bucco pitching staff has produced a shutout in two of the last three games, and four of Pittsburgh s last six victories have been blankings of the opposition...among all Major League teams this season, only the Indians (16) and Dodgers (14) have recorded more shutouts than the Pirates (11). THE KIDS ARE ALRIGHT: In Monday s 12-0 victory, four Pittsburgh rookies (Josh Bell, Max Moroff, Jordan Luplow and Elias Díaz) combined to go 10-for-18 with two home runs and nine RBI...Bell and Moroff drove in four runs apiece to become the first pair of Pirates rookies to each produce at least four RBI in the same game...the last rookie teammates to do that for any team were J.T. Realmuto and Enrique Hernandez with the 2014 Marlins (courtesy of Elias Sports Bureau). FEELING LEFT OUT: Tonight s game is the 139th of the season for the Pirates and the first time a left-handed starting pitcher will be taking the mound...according to the Elias Sports Bureau, this is the latest into a season that Pittsburgh has started all right-handed pitchers...the previous high was ALL 137 games during the 1891 season. WANNA BE STARTING SOMETHING: With his expected start tonight, Steven Brault would be the seventh different starting pitcher used by the Pirates this season...the Bucs used a total of 14 different starting pitchers last season...the club record for fewest starting pitchers used in one season is seven (1902, 1972 and 1997). PITCHER-OF-THE-YEAR: Steven Brault was named the International League s Most Valuable Pitcher after going 10-5 with a league-leading 1.94 ERA in 2s (20 starts) for Indianapolis this season while also holding opposing batters to a.199 average...he is just the second Indy pitcher in franchise history to lead his respective league with a sub-2.00 ERA, joining Paul Carter from the 1916 Indianapolis Indians squad...brault was also named to the Triple-A midseason All-Star team. BUCCO BASEBALL: Over the last five years (2013-2017), the Pirates have produced the fifth-best record in Major League Baseball...In that time, Pittsburgh has gone 424-361 (.540) and trail only the Dodgers (461-324;.587), Cardinals (443-342;.564), Nationals (443-342;.564) and Indians (433-350;.553) for the best record in all of baseball...in his seven seasons as the Pirates manager, Clint Hurdle has posted a 575-534-1 record; his win total ranks fifth in team history and his 1,109 career victories place him sixth among active managers. PLAYOFF BOUND: Pittsburgh s top two minor league affiliates have advanced to the postseason...triple-a Indianapolis finished the regular season with a 79-63 record and a first-place finish in the International League s West division; the Indians are scheduled to begin the playoffs Wednesday at Durham...Double-A Altoona posted a 74-68 record and captured the Eastern League s Western division title...the Curve begin postsason play in Bowie tomorrow night. RINGING THAT BELL: Josh Bell connected for his 24th home run of the season on Monday, giving him the National League record for most home runs by a switch-hitter in his rookie season...the MLB record for most home runs by a switch-hitting rookie is 27, held by Eddie Murray (with Baltimore in 1977) and Tony Clark (with Detroit in 1996)...Bell is also the second switch-hitter in team history to hit at least 24 home runs in a season; also Bobby Bonilla (24 in 1988 & 1989 and 32 in 1990). PIRATE GOLD AT SHORT: Jordy Mercer s.986 fielding percentage ranks second among National League shortstops behind Philadelphia s Freddy Galvis (.988) and his.985 fielding pct. at the position since 2014 is tops in the senior circuit...mercer has not made an error since 8/9 and has committed just two miscues in his last 4s, dating back to 7/17. SEPTEMBER SURGE: The Bucs have won three of their first four games played this month...over the last five seasons (2013-2017), Pittsburgh s 63-52 (.548) record during the month of September is the fifth-best mark among all National League teams; trailing St. Louis (68-45,.602), Washington (68-45,.602), Los Angeles (62-50,.554) and New York (61-50,.550). DOING SOME YARD WORK: The Pirates have homered in 15 of their last 18 games, hitting a total of 24 in that time...the Bucs have also homered in 14 of their last 16 games played at PNC Park, hitting a total of 24 dingers. PLAYING AT PNC: The Pirates have gone 37-32 at PNC Park this season, going 15-9 in their last 24 games played here. SHORT HOPS: Jordy Mercer established a single-season career high with his 13th home run Sunday afternoon...the last Pittsburgh shortstop to hit 13 home runs in one season was Pat Meares in 2000 and the last to hit more was Jay Bell (16 in 1991)...The club record for a shortstop is 19, hit by Arky Vaughan in 1935...Mercer s 45 home runs as a shortstop give him the fifth-most in team history at that position (Glenn Wright is fourth with 50). MOVING UP THE CHARTS: With his double Monday afternoon, Andrew McCutchen now ranks 10th on Pittsburgh s all-time list with 286 doubles (Arky Vaughan is ninth with 291)...McCutchen s 528 career extra-base hits rank seventh on the club s all-time list (Max Carey is sixth with 590) and Cutch is also two home runs shy of becoming the fourth player in team history to hit at least 200 long balls...in addition, McCutchen scored his 800th career run on Monday. ON THIS DATE IN PIRATES HISTORY September 5, 1969: Bucco legend Steve Blass went 4-for-5 at the plate and belted his only career home run, leading the Pirates to a 9-2 win over the Chicago Cubs at Wrigley Field. The three-run shot came off Ken Holtzman in the second inning. Blass also picked up his 14th win of the year, throwing a complete game. UP-COMING GAMES AND PROBABLE PITCHERS BUCS WHEN...
