USA plays Canada tomorrow (Dec. 30) in Toronto. Universal Sports has the 7 p.m. broadcast. The U.S. Olympic Men s and Women s Ice Hockey Teams will be announced Jan. 1, 2014, at the Bridgestone NHL Winter Classic in Ann Arbor, Mich. The women s team will be announced during the second intermission, while the men s team will be unveiled immediately following the game. NBC Sports Network will show both. The U.S. National Under-17 Team beat Quebec, 6-2, in a pretournament game at the 2014 World Under-17 Challenge in Cape Breton, Nova Scotia. With two wins (6 points), Team USA is currently in first place, while the Germans are in fifth after losses to Canada (7-2) and Slovakia (9-2). Germany finished in ninth place last year. In the U.S., the game will be televised live on NHL Network (DirecTV 215, Dish 477) and streamed live on NHL.com. It will also be re-aired at 7 p.m. on NHL Network. THE SERIES VS. GERMANY - The U.S. leads in the all-time series vs. Germany, 8-0-1-0-0 (W-OTW- OTL-L-T) and has a 51-14 advantage in goals. - The U.S. defeated the Germans, 8-0, in the preliminary round of last year s tournament. - Team USA has won three in a row vs. Germany. The lone loss was a 2-1 overtime decision in the 2006 tournament. LAST GAME: USA 6, SLOVAKIA 3 Six players scored and goaltender Jon Gillies made 27 stops in the win. Team USA used three power-play goals to build a 3-0 lead through the first 25 minutes. Jack Eichel scored from between the circles at 16:53 and Dan O Regan scored as time expired in the first period. Ryan Hartman hit the top left corner with a one-timer at 4:22 of the second frame. Slovakia scored back-to-back power-play goals to draw within one heading into the third period. Matt Grzelcyk jumped into the slot to pad the U.S. lead at 9:33. Stefan Matteau and Riley Barber then scored two minutes apart to make it 6-2. Slovakia added a late goal to end the scoring. SCORING DEPTH Through two games, 15 Americans have a point, while 10 have a goal. Riley Barber is the only player with multiple goals (2). Jack Eichel, Dan O Regan, Ryan Hartman, Matt Grzelcyk and Stefan Matteau each found the back of the net for the first time in the win over Slovakia. Six players are tied for the team points lead: Eichel (1-2--3), Grzelcyk (1-2--3), Hartman (1-2--3), Will Butcher (1-2--3), Andrew Copp (0-3--3), Nic Kerdiles (0-3--3). OFFENSE FROM DEFENSE In two games, Team USA s defensemen have contributed three goals and six assists. Will Butcher and Matt Grzelcyk are tied for the team points lead, having each tallied a goal and two assists. Jaccob Slavin has a goal and Connor Carrick has two helpers. Last year, the U.S. defense corps potted 10 goals and added 19 assists en route to the gold medal in Ufa, Russia. HEAD COACH DON LUCIA Game Notes vs. Germany Dec. 29, 2013 Page 2 TEAM USA STATISTICAL LEADERS Don Lucia is serving as head coach of the U.S. National Junior Team for the first time. In his 27th season as a head men s ice hockey coach at the NCAA Division I level, Lucia s 634 wins rank fourth all-time among active coaches. He has won two national titles (Minnesota-2002, 2003) and his teams have averaged nearly 24 victories per season. Lucia has had a variety of U.S. coaching positions. In August 2012, he was a camp coach at the U.S. National Junior Evaluation Camp in Lake Placid, N.Y. In 1996, he served as head coach of the U.S. Select-16 Team in a series vs. Finland. In 1995, he was the head coach of Team West at the United States Olympic Festival in Denver, and later that year was an assistant coach for the U.S. Men s Select Team that competed for the Tampere Cup in Finland. Lucia has been the head men s ice hockey coach at the University of Minnesota since the 1999-2000 season, winning national titles in 2002 and 2003, and guiding the Gophers to two other Frozen Four appearances (2005, 2012). From 1993-99, he was at the helm of the Colorado College program, which he took to a pair of NCAA Frozen Fours (1996, 1997). Lucia began his head-coaching career in 1987 at the University of Alaska Fairbanks, where he stayed until 1993. Lucia s first coaching stint came as an assistant coach at the University of Alaska Fairbanks (1981-85). He also served two seasons as an assistant coach at the University of Alaska Anchorage (1985-87). A native of Grand Rapids, Minn., Lucia played collegiately at the University of Notre Dame (1977-81). Lucia and his wife, Joyce, have two daughters, Alison and Jessica, as well as two sons, Tony and Mario. Tony played hockey at the University of Minnesota from 2006-10. Mario is a sophomore forward at the University of Notre Dame and was a member of the 2013 U.S. National Junior Team that won the gold medal. Lucia also became a grandfather in the summer of 2011. The Lucia family makes its home in Plymouth, Minn. Overall, the U.S. leads the tournament in power play efficiency at 62.5% (5-for-8). The U.S. penalty kill was 4-for-6 vs. Slovakia and stands 5-for-8 (.625) through two games. GILLIES GROOVE Jon Gillies has stopped 50-of-54 shots (.926), which ranks second among goalies who have played more than 50% of their team s minutes. He turned aside 23-of-24 shots from the Czechs for his first WJC win and stopped 27-of-30 shots from Slovakia. Three of the four goals against have been on the power play. FACEOFF FORTUNES Team USA has won 99-of-176 faceoffs (56.3%) in two games. Andrew Copp has won two-thirds of his draws (28-14, W-L), while Jack Eichel (18-19) and Dan O Regan (16-13) are near 50%. CAPTAIN AMERICA Riley Barber is serving as captain of Team USA, while Andrew Copp and Matt Grzelcyk are the alternate captains. A year ago, Barber helped the U.S. National Junior Team capture the gold medal at the 2013 IIHF World Junior Championship in Ufa, Russia. He contributed three goals and three assists. Barber, Copp and Grzelcyk were teammates on the U.S. squad that won the gold medal at the 2012 IIHF Men s Under-18 World Championship in Brno, Czech Republic. CALCULATED CHEMISTRY Nic Kerdiles, Dan O Regan and Riley Barber played together against Sweden and Finland, combining for two goals and three assists. All three have been primary scoring threats for their college teams and at previous international competitions. Kerdiles leads the University of Wisconsin in points (8-9--17) this season and led Team USA in scoring (4-5--9) en route to the gold medal at the 2012 IIHF Men s Under-18 World Championship. As Kerdiles center at that tournament, O Regan tallied 1-3--4. Also, O Regan led Boston University in scoring (16-22--38) in 2012-13 as a freshman and is among BU s top scorers this season. Finally, Barber is tied for second in college hockey this year with 28 points (11-17). A year ago, he tallied 3-3-- 6 to help Team USA win the gold medal at the World Junior Championship in Ufa, Russia. WELCOME BACK Forwards Riley Barber and Ryan Hartman, as well as goaltender Jon Gillies were members of the 2013 U.S. National Junior Team that won the gold medal in Ufa, Russia. Barber contributed three goals, which tied for third on Team USA, and three assists for six points. Hartman tallied two goals and an assist. Gillies was the backup netminder to John Gibson for the U.S., stopping all seven shots he faced in 20 minutes of action. TEAM BUILDING Sixteen of the 24 players on the U.S. National Junior Team roster were members of USA Hockey s National Team Development Program. Additionally, Dan O Regan played the final part of the 2011-12 with the U.S. National Under-18 Team. The list of past NTDP members includes forwards Riley Barber (2011-12), Andrew Copp (2010-12), Tommy DiPauli (2010-12), Jack Eichel (2012-14), Hudson Fasching (2011-13), Ryan Hartman (2010-12), Nic Kerdiles (2010-12), Stefan Matteau (2010-12), Tyler Motte (2011-13), Quentin Shore (2010-12); defensemen Will Butcher (2011-13), Connor Carrick (2010-12), Matt Grzelcyk (2010-12), Steve Santini (2011-13) and Brady Skjei (2010-12); and goaltender Thatcher Demko (2012-13).

MEDAL SUCCESS The United States captured its third gold medal at the 2013 IIHF World Junior Championship. Team USA has finished atop the podium in three of the last 10 tournaments. During that span, the U.S. also won a pair of bronze medals in 2007 and 2011. In the 37-year history of the IIHF World Junior Championship, Team USA has garnered eight medals (3 gold, 1 silver, 4 bronze). Six players on the 2014 U.S. National Junior Team roster helped Team USA to the silver medal at the 2013 IIHF Men s Under-18 World Championship, including Will Butcher, Thatcher Demko, Jack Eichel, Hudson Fasching, Tyler Motte and Steve Santini. Eleven players were gold medalists at the 2012 IIHF Men s Under-18 World Championship, including Riley Barber, Will Butcher, Connor Carrick, Andrew Copp, Tommy DiPauli, Matt Grzelcyk, Ryan Hartman, Nic Kerdiles, Dan O Regan, Quentin Shore and Brady Skjei. Kerdiles was also a member of the U.S. team that won the 2011 IIHF Men s Under-18 World Championship. FAMILY TIES A number of U.S. players have family roots in college and/or professional hockey. - Riley Barber s dad, Don, played at Bowling Green State University and in the NHL. - Will Butcher s dad, Joe, skated for the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point. - Tommy DiPauli s brother, Theo, is a sophomore at Union College. - Jon Gillies dad, Bruce, played goalie at the University of New Hampshire and in the IHL. Dan s brother, Tommy, skates for Harvard University. - Steve Santini s dad, Steve Sr., played for the University of Maine. - Quentin Shore s brothers, Drew and Nick, each played for the University of Denver and are now in the AHL. - Jaccob Slavin s sister, Jordan, played at the University of North Dakota. - Zach Stepan is the cousin of New York Ranger Derek Stepan, who captained the 2010 U.S. National Junior Team that won the gold medal. SWEDEN TIES Team USA assistant coach Greg Brown played the 1995-96 season for Rogle Angelholm of the Swedish Elite League. Lindab Arena, the venue for Team USA s exhibition games vs. Sweden and Finland, is the home rink for Rogle Angelholm. During USA s game vs. Sweden, the public address announcer prompted fans to welcome Brown back to Angelholm. EXTRA SPECIAL TEAMS A year ago, the U.S. led the tournament in penalty killing at 89.3%, allowing three power-play goals over 28 chances. The U.S. had perfect penalty kill games against Germany, Canada (twice) and the Czech Republic, while allowing a single powerplay goal to Russia, Slovakia and Sweden. The U.S. led the 2013 tournament with 12 power-play goals and was fourth in power-play efficiency (29.3%, 12-for-41). Of Team USA s 34 goals, 35% came with a man-advantage. John Gaudreau had a tournament-best four power-play goals. WHERE ARE THEY NOW? Forwards Alex Galchenyuk (Montreal) and J.T. Miller (New York Rangers) and defensemen Seth Jones (Nashville), Connor Murphy (Phoenix) and Jacob Trouba (Winnipeg) have each made their NHL debuts since helping Team USA win the gold medal at the 2013 IIHF World Junior Championship. Jones, Trouba and Galchenyuk could have played for the 2014 U.S. National Junior Team.
