ACADEMIC AFFAIRS COUNCIL AGENDA ITEM: 4 E DATE: November 8, 2018 ****************************************************************************** SUBJECT Math Pathway Project Update CONTROLLING STATUTE, RULE, OR POLICY None BACKGROUND / DISCUSSION The Math Pathway proposal was supported by the Board of Regents at the May 2018 meeting. Following that meeting, a funding request was then developed with a subcommittee of the Math Discipline Council and advanced as a formal budget request discussed by the Board during their June 2018 and August 2018 meetings. The Board was not supportive of including the requests as a budget priority for the Governor. However, they did establish the expectation that campus reallocation would occur to allow for a match against funding support from the South Dakota Education Access Foundation consistent with campus distributions referenced below. This internal reallocation was discussed at the October 2018 AAC meeting and with the Council of Presidents and Superintendents at their October 2018 meeting. Institution SDEAF Allocation Campus Redirect Total Investment $22,827 $45,653 $68,480 DSU $22,160 $44,319 $66,479 NSU $19,417 $38,836 $58,253 SDSMT $22,545 $45,090 $67,635 SDSU $71,311 $142,622 $213,933 USD $41,740 $83,480 $125,220 System $200,000 $400,000 $600,000 IMPACT AND RECOMMENDATION During discussion of this project at the October 2018 meeting, AAC members referenced two additional tasks that are still necessary to formalize the Math Pathway proposal for implementation in Fall 2019. First, the Math Discipline Council has been tasked with facilitating the necessary redesign of the current MATH 103 Quantitative Literacy course (Continued) ****************************************************************************** DRAFT MOTION Review the proposed program list assignments to the three math pathways and provide guidance for potential modifications.

Math Pathway Project Update November 8, 2018 Page 2 of 2 and developing new learning outcomes and course description to reflect the proposed MATH 103 course. Once completed, one institution can advance the necessary course modifications for approval by AAC. Second, a complete list of degree programs must be developed to identify those majors that require either the Mathematical Reasoning,, or pathway for their students. Attachment I provides the initial start of this list prepared by representatives on the Math Discipline Council. AAC members should review these proposed pathways for their campus and request any necessary modifications. Once formalized, a streamlined process for making any necessary program modifications can be developed and circulated through campus curriculum committees (i.e., alignment to the new course, and renumbering of MATH 102 to Math 114). Once completed, guidance for advising and orientation staff will need to be developed to ensure the appropriate placement of students into the pathway that matches their defined program.
