1 June 2018 Around the Collie Welcome to Around the Collie what a month of May we have enjoyed, including some very mild and beautiful weather. We have even been able to enjoy picking our roses from the Bindaree garden, however looking at the forecast it does look like it will be time to unpack the winter woollies and snuggle up! That white fluffy stuff is starting to fall on our nearby mountain tops. May has been busy with loads of great times shared together including our amazing Muriel s 101 st birthday celebration- Muriel has shared some of her thoughts with Phyllis our Roving Reporter so once again, the scoop is here in the Times. Another highlight in May of course was the royal wedding with Bindaree getting right into the action with some real life princesses! Hope you enjoy the photos in this months times and thankyou to our wonderful staff who got right into the action! We look forward throughout June to enjoying the friendship from the students from Lauriston Girls Howqua campus who will spend Tuesdays and Wednesdays with us I m sure there will be lots of fun to be had! Footy tipping is getting very interesting with the lead changing however young Oscar is right up there! We trust you enjoy this month s Times and we wish everyone a very happy month of June! We look forward to catching you around the Collie. Important Dates: 5th-World Environment Day 11th-Queen s Birthday Holiday 21st-Denis Tucker Concert
2 The Humble Hardware Store http://www.adelaiderememberwhen.com.au/the-humble-hardware-store/ It was where your father and grandfather went when they needed hinges to fix a banging door, or to get a piece of cut glass to replace a broken window. You could buy half a dozen nails in a brown paper bag or a single bolt with a nut and washer and nothing was packed in plastic. The humble, independent hardware store, it still exists, but sadly, getting harder and harder to find. These days, hardware shops are more like massive warehouses with their own huge outdoor plant nursery attached. Many have entertainment areas especially for the kids, some have their own cafes and you can purchase everything from pre-packed nails and bolts to flat pack kitchens and completely fitted-out bathrooms. But remember when the local hardware store was an Aladdin s cave filled with shelves containing all sorts of stuff, trays of nails, odd sized bolts and nuts, screws to hold things up and together and cardboard boxes filled with widgets and knickknacks that might only ever be needed once in a lifetime? There were wheelbarrows by the front door, ladders down the back and the key-cutting machine was generally whirring away in the background. There were rows and rows of bits and bobs and the assistants behind the counter, usually men who had worked there for at least twenty plus years, could put their hand straight on whatever you wanted. I used love the smell, hard to describe, but it was so distinctive that you knew you were in the hardware store. Above: The assistants behind the counter who had worked there for at least twenty years, could put their hand straight on whatever you wanted.
