Saturday Tournament location will be at the Christian Liberty Academy, 502 West Euclid Avenue, Arlington Heights, Illinois 60004. Hotel accommodations are available with special WC rates (see page two of packet). There are numerous restaurants, entertainment, and shopping, in the area for a nice weekend adventure, including Woodfield Mall just minutes away! A great feature at the WC is our round robin system of competition for some novice divisions allowing more opportunities for participation for our younger athletes. Another feature offered at the WC is a "Complimentary Room for Club Directors! For club directors who have ten or more students competing in two or more events, the club director will be provided a complimentary room for one night (at the listed hotel on page 2). Club directors must make their own reservations and then e-mail the hotel confirmation number to: jkaofpalatine@sbcglobal.net before or on March 25, 2019, so that the WC can honor the complimentary room. Saturday: April 27, Tournament Schedule Location at the Christian Liberty Academy, 502 West Euclid Avenue, Arlington Heights, Il 60004. Tournament Doors open at 8:30 a.m. and the Tournament will start at 9:00 a.m. with the children s (age 5-12) events. Teens and Adults will not start before 1P.M. Spectator s tickets: available at the door cash only. Teens and Adults $10.00 age 13 and older. Children NO CHARGE for up to age 4. Children $5.00 age 5 through 12. Minors (under the age of 18) are to be accompanied by a parent or guardian. Athletes to wear their Karate uniform (GI) to enter, or will have to purchase a ticket. Judges and Officials report for Ring assignments at 8:00 a.m. at the Christian Liberty Academy GYM, 502 West Euclid Avenue, Arlington Heights, Illinois 60004. Selection of Judges at 8:30 a.m. Judges will review the procedures and rules of the WC. Judges and Officials to wear WC dress code or purchase a ticket. Dress code: gray pants, a white shirt, and a dark red tie. Judges are to bring their own whistle. A special seating area will be designated, for all Judges, by each ring court. All Black Belts, 18 years and older, can help Judge at the children s events. Black Belts helping with judging, and competing will have time to dress into your uniform (GI). Please wear your Dress Code for Judging and NO Shoes when working on the floor. Volunteers: Recorders, Timekeepers, Runners, Ring Manager and Door Usher, Admissions Desk, etc. Report at 8:00 a.m. Dress code gray or black pants and a white shirt 3

Second Division: Teens ages 13-17 starting time will not be before 1:00 P.M. Third Division: Adults ages 18-73 starting time will not be before 1:00 P.M. Events 1. Team Kata 2. Kihon 3. Kata 4. Team Kumite Male/Female Teens 10. Team Kumite Male/Female Adults Events will start with the younger and lower ranks working through older ages and advanced ranks. The WC may combine divisions when appropriate. Awards Custom made medals will be awarded for First, Second & Third Place immediately after the conclusion of each event at each ring. Children s Tournament will start at 9:00 A.M. All children athletes are to report at 8:30 A.M. Children (age 5-12) pick up athlete number at 8:30 A.M. outside the GYM door and place the number on left side of the belt. Then proceed into the GYM, and report to the special waiting area for the athletes. Custom made certificates of participation for athletes age 5-12 will be mailed to the club director. Teens & Adults Tournament will not start before 1:00 p.m. Teens & Adults number pick up between 12:00 P.M. - 1:00 P.M. at the admissions table. Team Kata: 3 Athletes, per team mixed genders mixed ranks, Single Eliminations. Children age 5 through 12 Teens: age 13 through 17. Adults: age 18 through 56. Athletes can only compete on one team. Teams may perform any kata. Kihon: Round Robin (10kyu through 4kyu) Children: Two age groups age 5-6 & 7-8. Kihon: Single Elimination (10kyu through 4kyu) Children: age 9 through 12. Teens: age 13 through 17. Adults: age 18 through 56. Athletes will step Four times forwards and Four times backwards: 10-Kyu through 8-kyu: 1. Stepping forwards, punching to stomach. 2. Stepping backwards downward block. 7-Kyu through 6-kyu: 1. Stepping forwards, punching to face and twice to stomach. 2. Stepping backwards downward block and reverse punch to stomach. 5-kyu through 4-Kyu: 1. Stepping forwards, punch to face and twice to stomach. 2. Stepping backwards into back stance, knife edge block, and reverse punch to stomach. 5

Kata Divisions: mixed genders, ranks (10kyu - 4kyu) & (Brown - Black Belts) Kata Division Round Robin Children Four age groups: 5, 6, 7, 8. Kata Division Single Eliminations: Children Two age groups: 9-10 and 11-12. Kata Division Teens: age groups 13-17. Kata Division Adults: age group 18 through 56. Athletes may not perform a higher Kata than that required for their next promotion examination. Kata (Kobudo) Single Elimination mixed ranks & mixed genders, No bladed or edged weapons. One Time Attack (Kihon Ippon Kumite) mixed ranks & mixed genders Ranks 10-Kyu to 8-Kyu 7-Kyu to 6-Kyu 5Kyu-4Kyu Divisions Children ages 7-8 9-10 11-12 Divisions Teens age 13 14 15-17 Divisions Adults age 18 36 37-46 47-56 57-65 66-73 NOTE: Attacking Techniques: Athletes will attack two times from the following list: Jodan Oi-Zuki: stepping in aiming for either just below the nose and the Chin. Chudan Oi-Zuki: stepping in aiming for the solar plexus. NOTE: Defender will defend from Natural Stance (Shizentai): There must be appropriate distance to attack: After the bow, the attacking side will step forward and extend his/her arms to touch the shoulders of the defending side. The attacking side then steps back with right leg and execute a downward block or gedan-barai. Each attack must be clearly announced before execution. The defending side will respond with the verbal oss before the attacking side can proceed. The defender must defend and counter with an appropriate stance, block, and counter. After the completion of an attack and defense sequence, both athletes simultaneously return to the natural position or (Shizentai). The attacking athlete takes a step back to return to the natural position. NO contact done to the body or face, if contact is made, athlete may be disqualified Both competitors must wear fist-guards and mouth guard as per the Tournament Rules. There should be no damage done to the opponent. Attacks must be controlled with no contact. Only one technique is made on the attack, offending athlete will be penalized, if more than one attack. 7

Jiyu-Ippon Kumite: Round Robin mixed ranks & genders 3-Kyu through Black Belt. Divisions: Children: age 9-10 & 11-12. Teens: age 13-14 & 15-17. Adults: age 18 through 56. Adults Special Event: age 57 through 73. Both competitors must wear fist-guards and mouth guard as per the Tournament Rules. There should be no damage done to the opponent. Attacks must be controlled with no contact. Only one technique is made on the attack, the attacking athlete will be penalized if more than one attack. Just like regular sparring, athletes can move around the ring and use any technique, ( no strikes to the groin, neck, back of the head, etc.), but only one attack (technique) and must stop, the defending athlete must block & counter. The counter attack does not have to be only one counter, it can be block punch, sweep, and counter with a Kiai, to demonstrate a finishing blow. 8

Kumite: Definition of Kumite: Two competitors enter the court within the allotted time and perform various kinds of techniques freely against each other hoping to hold victory. All techniques punches, kicks, strikes, must be done with control. The distance required to do the techniques should be close enough to be able to be effective. There should be no damage done to the opponent. Kumite: Non-Contact matches Matches have a two minutes running time. Athletes must wear a mouthpiece and white soft cotton fist guards or comparable. Traditional 1 Point (Shobu-Ippon) & two 1/2 Points (Waza-ari). For the safety of the children, if an athlete is too small or too big for their age, enter them in a younger or older age group accordingly. Divisions: Children: age (7-8, 9-10, & 11-12) mixed genders and mixed ranks. Teens Female: age 13-14, and 15-17. Teens Male: age 13-14, and 15-17. Adults Female: age 18 through 56. Adults Male: age 18 through 56. Team Kumite 3 Athletes per team Children mixed ranks 10kyu through Black Belt and mixed genders Team Kumite must have an alternate: in case one of the three athletes cannot continue because of injury or sickness, then and only then, can the alternate replace the injured or sick athlete. At the start of the event, team captains will be called to the recorders table to confirm athlete s names and fighting order (positions 1, 2, and 3) along with the alternate athlete s name. Divisions: Team Kumite Children mix genders: age 9-12 Teens Female: age 13 through 17 Teens Male: age 13 through 17 Adults Female: 18 through 56 Adults Male: 18 through 56 Kumite and Team Kumite, Two different kinds of scoring systems: Team 1) 1 Point Match or Shobu Ippon: The competitor who has scored one full point or 2 half points first, within the allotted time, will be declared the winner. Individual 2) 3 Points Match or Sanbon Shobu: Two minute match, for each point, best out of three. For the Black Belt finals only, the competitor who has scored 2 full points first, within the allotted time, will be declared the winner. 9

27 th ANNUAL WINDY CITY TRADITIONAL SHOTOKAN KARATE CHAMPIONSHIP Saturday April 27, 2019 Tournament Director reserves the right to combine the events when appropriate. 1.The W.C.T. reserves the right to refuse entry to an event to anyone. 2.Athletes are required to wear a clean white Karate (Gi) uniform, appropriate to Traditional Karate. 3.Females are to wear a shirt or comparable attire under their uniform jacket. 4.Athletes can only wear one club patch, (maximum of five inches in diameter), on the left side of the Karate jacket. 5.No jewelry. No hard type (such as wire pins) hair accessories or decorations (such as beaded head bands). Only soft type (example: scrunchie hair accessories) will be permitted. 6.For safety: religious, cultural, or ethnically based articles must be approved prior to event check-in by the Referee. If an athlete has dental braces and is competing in a Kumite event, he or she (if a minor, the parent or guardian) must inform the Referee prior to event. 7.No headgear, footpads, shoes, shin guards, wrapped bandages, braces, or metallic objects may be worn. 8.For all Kumite matches, fist guards (made of soft material No boxing or kickboxing type vinyl), mouth guard ( for martial arts, ) no football or similar sport type), and male groin protector are mandatory. 9.For teens and adult females a chest protector is optional. 10.Children age 4 through 12 must wear a chest protector provided by the WCT, for all Kumite matches. Only the type that is designed to be worn outside the uniform will be allowed. 11.Eyeglasses or safety glasses will not be allowed for Kumite, Ippon Kumite, Jiyu- Ippon Kumite (No exception). 12.Only soft-type contact lenses will be permitted. If one or both lenses are lost during competition, the athlete will be granted a two-minute period to reclaim them. 13.In team competition, athletes can only compete on one team per category. 14.Athlete s name and number will be called three times, if the athlete fails to respond the athlete will be disqualified for that event. 15.Athletes that demonstrate unsportsmanlike behavior or do not follow the Windy City Tournament Rules can be disqualified. 16.Athletes are expected to obey the officials at all times. Athletes are expected to be physically/mentally capable of the expectations of participating in a Traditional Karate Tournament, including but not limited to monitoring their own physical conditioning (a parent or guardian must ensure the responsibility for a minor competing). check the web site: windycitykarate.net for information update. 10
